We have a milk cow. Technically speaking, as a Milking Shorthorn, she is triple purpose, not just a dairy cow. She produces milk, her offspring are fine beef cattle, and she can be trained as an ox.
Raw milk is so good for us that the federal government has made it illegal for me to sell it to others, at the request of the dairy industry that must put shelf-life first, and in doing so reduces quality so much that it isn't fair for the corporate producers to have to compete with local producers far superior product...raw milk.

I know this much - subsistance farming is a full time job for an entire family. My grandparents had a small farm in the early decades of the 20th century and they had a hired man who lived with them as well as seasonal help. There is a lot of information that you can get from research on the internet. You can download Mittleider's 6 Steps to Successful Gardening for free as a PDF for example. I believe cows are a lot of work and not inexpensive - you have to muck out their stalls daily to keep them clean - yay, free fertilizer. They are prone to mastitis and hoove infections which require the services of a vet. They need a lot of high-quality feed to produce milk. I'm afraid I come down on the side of pasturization here. My aunt had milk fever as a child and was very ill. Brucillosis, or infectious spontaneous abortion in animals, can infect people and is also a disaster for you, as your cow will abort her fetus and then she is useless for milk until she is bred again. Then you have to decide if you want to feed her until next season with no return or slaughter her. An infected cow can also pass on tuberculosis in their milk, and an animal may look perfectly healthy, as this disease is insidious, and still pass it on to the unwary. That is the reason it is illegal to sell raw, unpasturized milk.

There is, of course, a vaccine against brucellosis and cattle are routinely vaccinated against this now and tested for TB, but I wouldn't trust that the Amish put much store in such things and I still wouldn't drink unpasturized milk.
False. We spend far less time per week than the average American family does watching television or on so called, "digital devices." I work a full-time job, Mrs. Horseman is a full-time horse trainer, and our kids all go to school and participate in sports.
False. Our cattle stay out in pasture, and the cow walks in to the barn, without a lead, to be milked 1x per day when with a calf, and 2x per day otherwise.
False. We have never had a case of mastitis or a hoof infection in our cattle. Both can be easily prevented and treated without a vet.
False. Ours do just fine on less than 10 acres of grass pasture. Where we live in Texas, some folks will throw out a $50 round bale of cattle hay every month or so.
False. We have never had any of these diseases, nor know anyone that has. It sounds like your family was not very sanitary. These diseases are only common in herds, especially commercial herds, and are very easy and inexpensive to test for using simple methods like a strip cup.
Raw milk is no more harmful than eating raw fruit, raw vegetables, raw eggs, raw nuts, raw fish, or drinking fresh water.
People were drinking raw milk long before their was a federal government to look out for our health. If the feds are so concerned about our health, then why have they made it illegal for anyone but the government to test for mad cow disease?
My grandmother was Dutch and house proud, scrupulous about cleanliness. They farmed as people did in the early part of the 20th Century, before mechanization, when a horse pulled the plow and the thresher and the fact that heating milk prevented disease was less than 50 years old and not widely disseminated among poorly educated country folk. You've never had infections of the udder or foot in large part because you keep your cow outside. I live 1200 miles due north of Texas and dairy cattle are housed in a barn for part of the year here and are more prone to infections, and the daily mucking out of their stalls is vital. The diseases of cattle that can be transmitted through milk are kept at bay by modern medicine, but before WWII they were endemic. They could be so again if the shit really hits the fan and vaccines and antibiotics become unavailable, just as we might see a resurgence of such things as polio and diphtheria and measles, things we thought conquored long ago. Pasturization is an easy preventative against milk-borne disease; that your raw milk is safe now does not mean it will always be so, and you would have no means of knowing if it was not until someone got sick and then it would be too late.

That's good for detecting mastitis, but not something more systemic, like tuberculosis.
The CFU counts allowable for commercial milk production has risen over the years. When my husband's family dairy was in operation CFU count was 10. In many states it is now over 100. This is dirty milk raised in often deplorable conditions. Antibiotics are used freely selecting for resistant strains. The only way to consume this milk safely is to pasteurize it.
When you pasteurize you LYSE bacteria. This means they are exploded. This releases numerous chemical biproducts that are not removed from the milk. Some of these substances are highly allergenic. People can often drink raw milk with no trouble but are sickened by pasteurized milk. They assume they are lactose intolerant but in actuality are allergic to high amount of bacterial lysed products allowable in milk today.
I don't drink milk often but when I do I drink Organic Pastures a certified raw dairy. Mark Mcaffe the owner is a good friend of mine. USA has been free of brucellosis and TB for many years. I see lots of Brucella. It is a worry for me as a microbiologist. Isolating it in the lab is very dangerous because it's highly transmissible. Several colleagues of mine have been sickened. All of our isolates have links to Mexico. I would not recommend drinking raw milk in that country. I side with HH on this.
Maybe that is why sometimes milk bothers me and sometimes it doesn't. I never drink milk, but do use it in cooking and baking. I am aware that cattle in the US have been free of TB and brucellosis for a long time, but I am not confident that this will always be the case and i am not entirely confident that somebody's milk cow kept for private consumption could never come in contract with TB or Brucella from something it came across out in a pasture, such as the droppings of a wild pig.
Bump, 10% of all our TB isolates are Mycobacterium bovis ( cattle TB) all of it is from Mexico in my experience. It is theoretically possible an illegal alien comes across the border harboring this organism, works illegally on a dairy farm and infects the cattle. I have not heard of this happening but it is possible. This is why I am adamantly against illegal immigration.
People are so ignorant of the preponderance of TB and other diseases that are endemic in other countries. They once were common here as well but with diligent Public Health work they have been eradicated. A few such as yellow fever are making a come back. We microbiologists have warned the dangers of allowing unscreened people to invade our borders. Big business has out voted us and rather have cheap labor. Cheap may become Expensive in the long term.
TB resistant strains are much more common as well due to TB drugs being used inappropriately over the counter. Drinking raw milk may be the least of your worries.

Thanks for the reassurance. I used to work for the the County Department of Health, and even legals have bogus health certificates. I know people who have worked in health care who have converted to positive on their PPD and can't pinpoint where the exposure came from, so the infected are out there walking among us. My cousin's pre-school-aged child had a tubercular cyst on her neck some years back, and they never found the source of that infection either.
A tubercular cyst in the neck of a child is highly likely to be Mycobacterium scrofulaceum which is a scotochromagen. Google it for more info. This is an atypical mycobacterium and probably NOT MTB. These organisms are environmental, often found in soil and water. Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections only occur in USA by exposure to foreigners in my experience. I'm citing active not latent infections ( smear positive). A child with MTB would be highly unusual to randomly occur without a documented source patient. Lots of our positive skin tests are foreign born who received the BCG vaccine as children. Other mycobacterium do cause a positive ppd, including M. kansasii which I see predominantly in Asians. We do quantiferon gold testing primarily now which is a bit better than skin testing.

Having spent many years in the enterprise software world, I can tell you that a system like this with countless millions of lines of code should be able to tell you anything you want to know on at least an overnight basis. Certainly the number of enrollees, broken down in all kinds of ways.

Great idea and I have wondered the same thing! When Sebelius informed Congress of the other pressing engagement that kept her from testifying they should have hauled her ass away post haste. They are truly ball-less wonders. And have you noticed at these hearings the members seem to pontificate in order to look important rather than ask a damn question? It's enough to make you puke!
