"The real European debate is about identity," he notes, "what we are saying, large numbers of us from every single EU member state is: we don't want that flag, we don't want the anthem that you all stood so ram-rod straight for yesterday, we don't want EU passports, we don't want political union." As Greece faces down its 3rd bailout and deflationary threats loom across the region, we suspect top-down and bottom-up angst will bubble back to the surface soon enough.

Europe is perfect for a Confederacy. They could trade together, decide each their own politics, maintain their own armies, and vote together on whether or when to project force or direct funds.
A Federation is not good for them, they only want a Federation because the US is a Federal Union.
A Confederacy would not be so forceful, and not so nimble, as a Federal Union, but it would fit Euopeans perfectly, and give them everything they want.

There is a German term for the Brit's attitude towards the EU: schadenfreude - pleasure from other's misfortune or something along those lines......most Europeans I know want to remain in the EU as the alternative sucks. Imagine having to go back to using Francs, Lira, etc and changing currencies wiith all the cost that entails..... not to mention long line-ups at airports and border crossings. Anyone who lived in Europe prior to the EU knows what a pain in the ass all of that was....no way most people want to return to that......right wing nutbars are found everywhere - even in the USofA - this is not a function of the EU.
