America's Genetically Modified Foods - The Infographic
Are genetically modified foods, better known as GMOs, safe to eat? Although there is no definitive answer to this question yet, American consumers eat genetically engineered foods all the time. However, the maze of labeling laws makes choosing whether or not they want to eat them a totally different story.

Also, please pass country of origin labeling. No shit, but I bought apple juice once and found it was made in China. Seriously? It is a major challenge trying to figure out where your food comes from.
Ascending Empire variety? Crisp and sweet.
When I saw the made in china I looked for metal shavings floating around.
I'd really be concerned about the mold.

I'd be more worried about food from Japan.
Japan.gov rejects it but American standards say it's safe.
Eat MOAR!
Over.
Welcome to the new radiation scale for food. Remember, last year's hazardous levels are this year's clean ones.

This graphic says it all: The Obesity Increase in the USA Since 1996.
1996 was when GMOs were first introduced to our food chain. Before 1996 the rate of obesity was less than 20% by 2009, it was more than 30%.

Not too long ago, America Fed the World...now the World feeds America.
What changed?
Now, the Fed feeds the world with fiat currency, food and propoganda.Forget about passing labeling laws. These fuckers and their PR sycophants know just the right words to obfuscate what passes for truth nowadays. Like everything else this calls for rakes, shovels and sharp pitchforks.Support the small farmers if you can find them.
No shit, I have found Milk that was from China now. I didn't buy it, but it threw me for a loop, was like 0.o???
The Chinese are fully committed to the free market, aren't they.
Somehow I don't think it's economical to bring milk around the world for sale here in Arizona. Not many people drink milk here because it's too damn dry most of the year.
There's nothing like 10 day old milk.

This organization was funded and started by the Rockefellers in 1946.
BTW, if anybody is in the Florida area, I'll see you at this event as I'm attending both days.
DaddyO
monsatan and co love you. no, really, they do. now be a good sheep, eat the poison and die, slowly and horribly, just as the rockefellers planned.
Daddy-O,
Your link tried to implant software on my laptop. You may wish to reconsider or better-check out links before you post them.
As for the "survivalist convention-I would much prefer a carribbian sail.
You clicked.
It's up to you to be protected/prepared.
Obama's TPP FTA has a provision dealing with this issue. Of course, the provision prevents origin labeling as being an unfair restriction on trade, putting American agricultural companies at a competitive disadvantage against local growers.
Which is the reason I take the trouble to grow my own as much as I can.
+1 Learn to garden now, folks. Eat as much organic produce as you can that you grew. Fuck, if I could learn compost vs. fertilizer, heirloom vs. hybrid, and square foot vs. row, anybody can. (I chose answer A for all three comparisons.) I never grew so much as a tomato before this summer, but I managed to produce approximately 200 lbs of food from only 48 square feet of garden this past summer. The taste kicks the shit out of supermarket produce and there were no chemicals, no GMO Frankenshit, and practically no work involved, except watering and harvesting. Oh, and taming tomato vines. That takes a bit of work, but it was worth it. My pantry now contains two full shelves of home canned and home dried goodies.
You are right.
My garden is about 3/4 acre. It is big, and I have to work daily to keep it going. It makes food and gives me exercise. That's the way I look at it.
Free food, just grow it.
It is not as hard as you think.
+1 million
Regular garden? Any experience or chatter from others on green houses? Thanks bro. "Don't tase me bro." ;-)
Where do you get non-zombie non-GMO seeds? What about the seeds at places like Lowes? Thanks. ;-)
Try seedsavers.org for heirloom seeds. I got three varieties of tomatoes from them, and they produced like gangbusters. Got a whole bunch of other seeds that did equally well. Seeds at big box stores are usually Burpee or some derivative, and Burpee gets a lot of Monsatan seeds.
I don't have a greenhouse yet, but if I get acreage I definitely plan to set one up so I can grow the tropical plants I can't live without. Coffee for me, chocolate and tea for the wife.
I bought the second edition of Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartolomew, and his method works. Set up costs are initially expensive (roughly $350 for me) but you will never have to till your soil or add chemicals, and the weeds are practically non-existent since your soil doesn't have a million weed seeds in it. Plus I grew watermelon up a nylon netting frame, which was fucking cool.
+1 for seedsavers.
I recently started a hobby farm. Moved here a couple years back...my background is minor gardening at best, no experience with livestock, never killed an animal (other than fish) prior to moving out here.
In two years I have put in a full orchard, learned to milk my Guernsey milk cow, raised ducks and chickens from hatchlings, raised beef cows and pigs. My freezers are full, I have hams hanging, dozens of various cans of produce we've "put up" this year (from jams to tomato sauces, grape juice to pickles). We've eaten daily from our square foot gardens: some of the freshest, best tasting fruits and veggies I have ever had in my life.
It requires some sweat and time, but man is the food delicious and healthy. The kids love the experience of living "on a farm" and our few acres produce abundantly. We are able to share our excess with others less fortunate and we've demo'd our gardens to many interested individuals. The system works as nature intended: cows produce tons of manure for composting, the pigs root up brushland, leaving excellent soil for meadows behind them, and the chickens keep producing fresh eggs daily.
If this computer programmer with little/no experience can work full time at the office and still produce 75% of his caloric needs after only full two years, those of you smart enough to be on zerohedge are bright enough to do the same.
+1 for you!
Right here:
http://www.seedsavers.org/
The seeds at Lowe's or other garden centers may or may not be GMO. You have to research it. Some of then are not. Some beans you buy at groger can be grown.
I usually save the seeds that I want to grow again and buy new varieties for next year. It has become someshat of a hobby, and I enjoy it.
You have to be careful about saving seeds. Corn is wind-pollinated so cross contamination occurs all the time, which is how those poor bastard corn farmers that didn't buy Monsatan corn ended up with Monsatan corn. Bees cross-pollinate all the time, and your child plants will end up nothing like your parent plants. If you want to learn how to save seeds, get "Seed to Seed" by Suzanne Ashworth and learn how to do it right. I will not have to buy new seeds ever again thanks to this book. ;)
Oh, and +1 for the grocery store mention. Most people don't realize you can buy a bag of beans at the grocery store and sprout them. You can also do this with flax seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds (that have not been roasted), raw peanuts, hell, even bird seed for your pet birds.
You can even sprout some harvested vegetable from the root. So far as I know, this works with lettuce, celery, and carrots. Use your favorite non-Google search engine to search for "how to sprout vegetables without seeds".
Ehhh...
Schools of thought vary on cross pollination. Some guys say you can grow 3 strains of tomatos next to each other without worry, some not. I think depends on the flower structure.
I do only grow on kind of corn at a time. It is a research area.
Most of my seeds I grow every few years (about 3) rotated because pressure canned vegs are good for about 2 years.
Please consult the USDA canning guide, but I've has no problems in 32+ years on the farm.
You can grow three strains of tomatoes right next to each other. I did this summer. ;) This is because tomatoes have perfect flowers that self-pollinate, and it is a closed system so they cannot be cross-pollinated. If you grow broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage next to each other though (they're all in the brassica family and readily cross-pollinate) you will have problems unless you hand pollinate your flowers. It takes a bit of work and know-how to hand-pollinate but it isn't difficult.
Yes, some are perfect. Some are not. It took experience for me.
I now have a localized strain of Brandywine. That's the thing, grow your own. I've just daved the seeds from the nicest plants for decades, took a big enough selection every year, picked the strongest plants......
It becomes a life. Tedious. Predictable. Nice.
I'm also 63 years YOUNG so I like predictable.
I like to tickle the flowers with a paintbrush while yelling, "Who's your bee!? Who's your bee!?" The plants must love it because they produce lots of fruit every time. LOL
That's Creepy!
Captain, what you say is only partially correct. If the tomato (or pepper plants which are also self pollinating)are "stock seed or first year out seeds(one year out is seed from a stock vegetable planting) After that however thise plants will cross pollinate by the wind or self induced pollination (you did it purposedly), as will all other vegs. Most squash plants are easily cross pollinated and should be grown apart from one anotherr. Incidently and very important, with tomatoes being either "determinate ir indeterminate. Determinite tomatoes will all ripen at roughly the same time,so these are best for canning, Indeterminates will produce throughout the season and are the most used by gardeners.
On size, under one acre you can GET by with a small rototiller. Above an acre you better start looking for a small tractor with equipment.
Rots of ruck for first timers, you are going to see mother nature in all her whims which can change your garden in 15 minutes and there ain't a damn thing you can do about it. Bite the bullet! Milestones
This place. All the growing is done by Amish: Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. I've actually been there. They have a wonderful, informative festival every May.

Did the same thing this summer only I grew organic food in a small greenhouse and patio containers. It was truly enjoyable and easy. Here's a tip, we filter all of the water in a Big Berkey water filter to delete the flouride and chlorine so the plants are watered with good clean water. Makes a HUGE difference in the plants.
Collect rainwater is best. Fluoride is really tough to fully filter out. I built a system using old barrels off craigslist and PVC tubing. Works great.
john39,
Be Cautious with RAINwater.
I am as far east US as one can get.
Mind you, such is the air quality armpit of the US.
RAINWATER here has above safety levels of radiation.
Not every rain, but some are horrific.
Buy a dosimeter on Ebad and check your rainwater, or wait for cancer to check in.
Key to knowing is to watch where the rain comes from, simple.
Hope you only read "normal" on your guage.
I don't water with town water. I set up a rain catchment system so I water with that. There might be some residual Fukushima contamination in rain water, but I can't possibly filter that out, and I doubt the town does.
Be aware that chlorine is hard on the black filters and shortens their life, so if your water system uses chlorine, you can let it sit for a half hour to hour and it will off-gas a lot of the chlorine. Much more of an issue if you ever try to use pool/spa water in an emergency sitaution. However, if your water system uses chloramines, like mine, it won't off-gas and online research is not clear as to whether the black filters remove it. Love the PF2s.
Thanks for the tip - have been using tap water for plants, but will switch over to filtered to see if it makes a difference.
I'm not one to really recommend products often, but I've been using this for a couple of years as my backup for when I run out of rainwater (until I get more water storage), and it works great. $55 for 35,000 gallons worth of filtration is not too bad. They have regular sales too; I got mine for $35 + shipping last Spring.

Much thanks to all who posted helpful information. I have dabbled with container gardening, but want to expand. This thread is an awesome resource.
Would that not be Government regulation? I myself would like to know if the dog treats I bought are the ones that could kill my dog. China adds now an unidentified INTOXICANT to dog treats.
Buy Martinelli apple juice. Last brand made in US. All the others made in China.
All these fruit juices and fruit cups made in China are puzzling, we have some of the largest and most productive fruit growing regions in the world right here. Importing this stuff makes no sense. And where is all the US fruit going?
Creepy Lurker,
Where any quality commodity is going, overseas.
Identicle to power trade.
Sell overseas for moar money!
Buy cheap, low quality, UNREGULATED, or tested foreign, and sell to Mericans.
Expecting differently from an Oligarch industry, corporation, Govt. is foolhardy.
Just look at fuel as a well defined example of bait-n-switch price manipulation for quarterly gains.
US fuel production passed Saudis, gas consumption in 70's levels, and the price... not indicative.
Got apples?
Juice is bad for your health. It causes a release of fructose that causes blood sugar to rise more quickly than the pancreas can correct. The extreme instance is HFCS and type II diabetes. Eat real fruit in limited amounts and skip juices completely.
Don't worry. The Chinese have been feeding us GMO foods for years now and it's only killed dogs, cats, and infants. For adults it is perfectly safe.
Until it isn't.
I once bought a bag of pumpkin seeds at the supermarket. As I ate a few, I was checking out the back of the bag: "Produced in China"
I spit out what was in my mouth & threw the bag in the trash...
I submit that they are not as nutritous as heirloom organic foods grown in biodiverse soil.
Also, given that GMO plants are designed to tolerate high levels of pesticides in the soil, I remain concerned that they are being ingested by the crops, and thus by us.
NO one, NO one, has done any long-term (multi-generational) studies on their effects on our DNA. Nor has there been any time to do so.
the long term (multi-generational) studies are being done right now
I suspect the cancers will show up long before the studies do.
Make lots of $$ by feeding them poison & making them as sick as you can..
...then turn around & make lots of $$ by selling 'em lots of poison to make them "better"...
Well the French did a study on the long term effects of GMO corn where they allowed the subject rats to live their natural life span instead of an early kill. Check out the tumors. Why any one would feed this garbage to anyone is beyond me.
http://www.motherearthnews.com/natural-health/gmo-safety-zmgz13amzsto.as...
Miffed;-)
I feel bad for those rats...they should use Monsanto executives instead.
Kudos to all the farmers and gardeners commenting here. Just a hunch, from my successful gardening exploits the past two summers (Rochester, NY). I originally started because I wanted to grow tobacco, and did - it will grow anywhere - and used heirloom seeds, and additionally found out that most pesticides have TA-DA! NICOTINE as their base element.
Why? Nicotine is a natural pest repellant. I grew about a dozen tobacco plants and had very few bug problems with my crops, which included peas (dang rabbits ate most of those), cucumbers, two kinds of squash, melons, watermelons, corn, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, three tomato varieties, delicious Sicilian eggplant. All grown from heirloom seeds.
I smoke, thus the tobacco plants, and have dried, cured and smoked it. Like food, nothing tastes as good as something you've grown yourself and the smoking was excellent. Working on cigars next summer.
All this was grown on a 20x40 plot, but I thank the tobacco for the lack of insects. I have no scientific proof of this, but, even if you don't smoke, tobacco plants grow very large (6-8 feet) in any climate and are used extensively by landscapers because they are very leafy (duh!) and pretty.
Have to add that I used tips from author Gene Logsdon (especially useful is the book, The Contrary Farmer's Invitation to Gardening) and sewed directly into mulch beds. Free stuff. I collect all the neighbor's leaves in the fall, cut them up with my mulching mower and just laid it over the lawn. Will add more this fall and spring. Great growing medium, minimal effort, few weeds.
Good luck, eat healthy (non-GMO), live long and prosper!
If you've got kids you might be familiar with the Spongebob episode where they decide to cheap-out and make Krabby Patties (the signature burger at the Krusty Krab) out of garbage and spray paint them to look like real food.
Nobody notices until almost the end of the episode.
My son in law let his daughter watch spongebob for years. I told him to shut it off and read to her.
She's 4 now, and has a moderate speech impediment.
Costing quite a bit for good speech therapy.

Did Mr. Krabs sue for injunctive relief, and made whole, as it was, from this terrible crab caper?
Over.
stick to the markets ZH
Monsanto, DuPont, Pepsico, etc...it is about market players, ethics, politics and rights of humans.
Why support asshole companies in the market?
Who did Pepsico let use their logo for his campaigns? It is freaking identical.
I'm in WA state. I'll be voting for 522 and nothing else. Initiatives are the last remaining vestige of democracy. I'll never vote for ANY member of the red/blue team again.
WTF do you think this trade is? Not a market? Is food a tiny market? Asshole.
Bullshit. ZeroHedge is not all about markets. ZeroHedge explores much more than just market trading data. ZeroHedge is about a group of people who pay attention to what is going on in the world and feel the need to bring the facts to light. Politics, for example, greatly affect markets and ZeroHedge covers those sorts of events. If you do not like ZeroHedge then simply leave.
and when we aren't paying attention we be drinking fairly heavily...
...with friends. The few which remain, anyway.
I have found drinking tends to enhance the ZH experience. Unless I overdo and go to the dark side. At least it will be archived eventually.

Point taken. Been dabbling but need to go all in! ;-)

Yes, let's hope they stay a one trick pony like Bloomturd or MarketWaste.....
stick to the markets InsideHerTrading
The whole reason the markets are interesting in the first place is the window on human behavior they represent. So there really is no "stick to the markets." If it has to do with human behavior, it has to do with markets in some way. And you'd really have to be trying hard not to see market repercussions around GM food.
What's left to say about these so-called "markets"?
BTFATH. If no ATH, BTFD until ATH. Then BTFATH.
InsideHerTrading,
Do you know where the local organic growers market is?
Consumption is the main market, and food is not paper.
Food is and will be "the" market soon enough, when your assumptive rationalization realizes magically, every person eats, 50 million are a controlled market on food stamps/EBT cards, and the dollar will not render cheap imported food remotely affordable for EBT card holders... shortly.
Take a glance in history for the likes of yourself. Difficult to find the ones who wasted away.
In hand, or empty hand, your choice it is.
And the world is so quick to jump on China's shitty food situation - America is WORSE

Fucking accountants, never trust them.
Officially or unofficially?
It's always a drug or agribusiness tool.
Watch the documentary "Food Inc." sometime. It's an eye opener. And the door between the FDA and Monsatan is a revolving door.
Between GMOs and stuff that isn't food at all like high-fructose corn syrup and trans fats, it's hard to figure out what to eat. In general it's a good practice to stick to the perimeter of the grocery store and prepare your own meals from primary food ingredients. I don't have any way of knowing if there's anything wrong with GMO food, but neither does anyone else, and that's the problem. Having seen decades of propaganda in favor of non-food garbage, while watching people who eat the shit get sicker and sicker, and things like food allergies, autism and diabesity get more and more common; well, it just makes a fellow say, "Hmm..."
Diabesity...haven't heard that one before. Very catchy.
I stole it from sombody--probably on this site. I'd love to see it get popular.
I'll gladly steal that from you. I come from a long line of diabese people. I fight this by not consuming the shit that caused the diabesity and exercising. I pray the genetics involved don't play too much of a factor.
My aunt Bertha had diabesity, but it wasn't catchy. At least not in the early stage.
The Bad Seed: The Health Risks of Genetically Modified Cornhttp://www.elle.com/beauty/health-fitness/allergy-to-genetically-modifie...
Not to mention autoimmune disease.
For a very healthy diet, just keep it simple: fruits, nuts and vegetables are the healthiest things you can eat.
Having a diet with a lot of these, mixed with some 'cheat' food a few times a week, mixed with 15 minutes of exercise just 2-3 times a week and you will be healthy to a ripe old age.
MarcusLCrassus,
Perchance if such consumption matches your bodies genetic food acceptance program.
The "food" your body does not recognize is wrapped and stored in fat due to low effeciency processing.
Easier to store than to burn such food.
Find the foods to benefit your consumption through efficient burning of the fuel/food.
To think or assume your body does not have fuel preference...? funny.

This is a good article re: GMO labeling:
http://www.buzzfeed.com/rachelysanders/big-food-spending-millions-to-pre...
We also need country of origin labeling laws given that the USDA's recent regulations re chicken importation/reimportation from China"
http://www.medicaldaily.com/chicken-china-approved-usda-import-us-255727
This is bad on many levels. It appears that it is cheaper to ship the chickens to China and have them processed there and then reimport the meat than to pay Americans to do the work. Plus we can't know without labeling where it comes from.
I grow my own chickens (by the millions...I raise eggs, grade B) so I just go grab a couple and dress them.
It is easier than you might think.
Watch what you eat, and where it comes from. It's important for your health as we can no longer afford to get sick.
i have obamacare, i can afford to get sick, oh wait, maybe that's the plan
Yes, you're catching on now!!
Nobody can afford to get sick, not with those deductibles.
So I reenrolled in my company health plan last week. Cost per year went up $1000 (46.7% increase) for the same coverage, the deductible jumped another grand (100% increase), and the co-pay went from 10% to 20% (100% increase). And these increases are to care for fewer people, because my company dumped all the spouses. But, fuck yeah, Obamacare is going to save America's health! I'm about ready to say fuck it, drop the coverage, pay the penaltax, and save the difference in premiums to travel to Oklahoma for any (unlikely) surgery needs.
>playing russian roulette with his financial future
Other than for brokgen bones and lacerations submitting to mainstream Medicine is riskier than going the non-insusrance route. Better to invest all that money in good food, friends and environment . Being 66, i may have become too cynical so just use this as a guide not gospel.
petolo,
Taught as a grandchild of a Bluecross Medical rep... never go to the hospital.
I only go or have gone with broken bones, from Alaska commercial fishing, mtn biking, autos, and motorcyle racing.
Watch my friends go in and come out prescription, appointment, side effect loaded.
Grandfather went in to have lungs checked, they biopsyed a tumor in his lung, not recommended.
He was dead in 10 days due to agitation of tumor causing spread over entire body.
Bye bye guy. You told us, and where correct all your life, till 81.
You grow chickens & raise eggs.
That's funny!
I guess it's a figure of speech. I bought the business from my grandfather, so it's sort of a lifestyle. Grandaddy practically raised me.
I processed 15 chickens and 4 turkeys a few weeks ago. Lots of hard work but with 4 people we got it done in 2 hours. I unthawed one of the 28lb hens and just cooked it without any brining or basting. That was the most tender turkey I've ever had bar none! I just fed them unlimited pasture, organic grain and crimped non GMO corn for treats. It cost me $1.25/lb to raise. I am definitely going to do it again. Unfortunately my 2 toms dressed out at 40 lbs so I'm a bit unsure if they will fit in the oven! Your right, it really wasn't hard. Everyone should do this at least once in their life.
Miffed;-)
Wish I could, but my town has an ordinance against livestock raising on residential land. My town pretty much has an ordinance against everything. And to think I chose my house because it wasn't burdened by an HOA! They passed the new code after I'd been living here for a decade.
I'm thinking of buying some country acreage, putting up a shack and a henhouse, and starting a new garden. Anything to get away from the regulation Nazis who are fining people for having their trash cans in the front of the house (the horror!!) and for having toys on the front lawn for more than 24 hours. The claim is that it protects property values, but please, it's to protect property tax revenues.
You should.
I live in GA and there is a state law prohibiting local ordinances restrictricting agrigultural products. I live in the middle of nowhere so it does not matter.
I have friends "in town" that keep birds and rabbits as "pets."
Mostly around GA the ordinances are not enforded unless there is a complaint, and even then if it's a pet there's nothing to be done.
Best to read up on law, and case law for your area.
Yeah, I've read a lot about people who raise goats and rabbits and name them and get around the onerous regulation that way, but I figure I shouldn't have to find backdoor methods to feed my family. I'd rather pull up the tent pegs and relocate to a place that isn't being regulated to death (yet).
I understand and you will find that living in the country is a good life if you are a good neighbor. You will get help and knowlege if you ask for it.
I encourage you to do so.
Buy some leather gloves.

Edit: And fuck them whatever it takes.
We fled the city 15 years ago and never looked back. We're all on 10 acres which is plenty for us. Downside is my 42 mile commute to work but it is so worth it. No HOA. Great neighbors. Peace and quiet.Do what ever you want on your land. My dogs poop by the side of the dirt road and no one gives a shit! Solar and a great well with a 10k cistern makes us somewhat independent. Considering 95% of San Diego is dependent on imported water we feel we're in a good position if things go bad. If you can pull it off do it! You really don't need much land and will be amazed how much you can raise on such a small scale.
Miffed;-)
"My dogs poop by the side of the dirt road and no one gives a shit!"
Well, the dogs do. ;)
You live in the People's Republic of Kalifornia? My condolences.
Yep, there are a few pockets of us freedom loving, rugged individual types still here. We regularly meet and support each other. We all have an exit plan if need be. Our family farm is in the hinterlands of WA where we can flee if necessary. 85 year old Grandma has been fortifying it for years and has upped it since the "That goddam bastard Obama" came on the scene. Its sad to realize that all you have built could be possibly ripped away by an evil, illegitimate, power hungry government.
Miffed;-)
Good that you have a place to go when it all turns to shit. Your grandma sounds like an ass-kicking hellraiser that I'd be proud to be related to. My own grandmothers, prior to their deaths, were the "we must support the government and do what they say" types. What a sad legacy I have.
Grandma grew up on a small farm during the Depression and helped support her family selling apples on the street as a little girl. All she knows is self sufficiency and hard work. If Obama were to knock on her door she'd likely give him both barrels from her sawed off shotgun. I hope to be her when I grow up! ;-)

We're out here in East County. Been here for 27 years. But, our home is currently up for sale due to the financial and political climate we live in. I'm researching the Northern Idaho area. I actually considered buying a piece of land outside of Boulevard to retire on. But after seeing the amount of illegal aliens traversing the area, every day and night, we nixed that idea. I wish you and yours all the best.
We considered Boulavard as well but it was a bit too far out and we saw the illegal problem as well. We're currently in the Ramona area. I wanted to live in Julian and we rented near there but the crazies on the long windy road dissuaded us to buy. Northern Idaho was fabulous when I was in Spokane 30 years ago. I'm assuming it's character remains the same. I have several friends relocate there. One had some trouble getting a job because some areas have a large Mormon population and they prefer to hire Mormons. You certainly will experience a different climate! Mr miffed would be jealous. He hates San Diego and misses seasons. If I drop dead he is planning to move back to the pacific northwest or Colorado before Im cold in the grave.
Miffed:-)
Curious here... In WA state we get to vote on Initiative 522 next week concerning the labeling of GMO foods. On one hand I am not a fan of Monsanto, but on the other I don't think it is healthy for people to outsource their due diligence to .gov
I lean towards a No vote. Any company who produces non-GMO product gets a market advantage by voluntarily labeling as such. Any one with 1/2 a brain should assume that any corn or soy (& containing--e.g. HFCS) product they buy in the US is GMO unless labeled otherwise.
Curious what people think. Do we need to be coddled and protected or do we have a responsibility to actually research what we put in our bodies for sustenance?
I think we have the responsibility to research and I loathe government coddling, but the battle over labelling has another benefit aside from the obvious one...people who were previously unaware of the issue and went about baa-ing as they ate their peas will now know there's something funny about those peas.
OK. If it was me I would approve this law. But it is not me.
This is a test case and could lead to wider addoptance of strict labeling requirements. I am a supporter of this. I need to know where my food comes from and what is in it.
There is a similar law in the GA legislature now, and I support that as well.
We have to make sure what we eat is healthy. The simple fact that big ag lobbies against this requirement/law is to me a massive TELL.
Just what are they hiding and why??
It is interesting that this initiative has had the most money put into influencing it's outcome vs. any other initiative in WA state history. Personally, I'd like to see voluntary labelling. I also like to know where my food comes from. My local market labels the origin of foods and as such gets my business over Safeway & QFC, etc. I'm a big fan of our local farmer's markets where I can look the grower in the eye and show up at the farm should I so desire. Full disclosure: I love the bulk section, cook all my own meals, and haven't eaten at a fast food restaurant in 10+ years. A pressure cooker is a tool of freedom. Weakness for eating at foodie restaurants and enjoying microbrews, fine wines, & handmade cocktails though.
I agree. You can make your own beer though! :)
Right on bro. I am an accomplished brewer of beers. Recently delved (again) into hard cider and put together a consortium of aspiring brewers who made 55 gallons of the stuff. Props to Bruce at Lopez Island Farms who made the juice. Skills are one of the most valuable assets that can't be devalued or appropriated away.
Uh oh, you mentioned you support GMO labeling and you said "pressure cooker". The NSA just went full code red terrrrist alert on you. I'll save you the bunk next to me at Camp FEMA if you want.
THEY WILL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE! :)
Dantzler,
To whom are you speaking when inciting pronouns such as we.
Certainly you are inferring the majority, who is trained clueless.
In doing so, making clueless, where does the controlling become self interested.
In doing so, where is the responsibility for the people lost, or selectively discarded?
The non-commital based, needle in hatstack question, probably paid for, is SHITE.
On the topic of food and food safety, here's one nasty story about "second hand" cooking oil. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrv78nG9R04
GMO corn fed to pigs causes serious damage their stomachs leading to death. You can bet the elites don't eat that crap.
Yup, the elites only consume Kobe beef and such. They leave the pig swill to the unwashed masses.
A new free app called ‘Buycott’ allows you to use your Android or iPhone to analyze products and determine if you’re supporting Monsanto’s GMOs, Big Food companies who are damaging your health, or simply low quality products...
http://www.infowars.com/shopping-app-lets-you-boycott-monsanto-and-others/
And then the NSA forwards this information directly to Monsatan and Camp FEMA. Just say no to iApp crap.
For those who insist on playing with spy phones.
Please allow me to correct the editorial copy.
"Are genetically modified foods, better known as GMOs, safe to eat? Although there is no definitive answer to this question yet..."
Um, the stuff is a health disaster. Digestive diseases in the US have doubled since the introduction of GMO foods.
Rats provided with a lifetime diet of GMO foods developed tumors starting in 120 days.
All previous Monsanto studies stopped at 90 days.
The proposed laws on the ballots are merely to label the foods so we can make an informed choice. If you want to continue eating GMO foods, you can still buy them 'til your heart's content.
Labeling hurts no one.
monSatan has done the LONG term tests. Why else would their tests gracefully conclude after 90 days, before the tumors?
monSatan has done long tests beyond 120 days and know exactly the results, are what they wish.
Any assumption based otherwise is the first three letters of such.
Nothing has changed, we all are ruled.
One must stand alone to be proverbially free, in your garden.
All these US food corporations have no conscience. Their number 1 aim is to maximize profit as possible. Fast food chains like Mcdonalds ,Burger King ,KFC are colluding with the meat industries to create all these frankenstein meats that grow as fast as possible. At the mean times, fast food industries have systematically brainwashed young kids that their food taste best so as to tempt them to patronize their food chain as much as possible.
There is a video from China that the meat industries in that country are developing mutated chicken that will grow extra 6 chicken wings as now American have also developed a taste for buffalo wing when watching their sport events.. Have you imagined why there are so many chicken wing supply?
Unfortunately with agriculture and food production so industrialized , almost all food source cannot be trusted. Since the industrial revolution and the urbanization of human being, most human being have lost the mean to produce their own food. To rely on big corporation to grow food is the gravest mistake mankind ever made.. Big corporation is always to maximize profit regardless of any food safety regulation.
There was an episode of the cartoon "Squidbillies" where the entire plotline was centered around an evil corporation that was trying to genetically engineer mutant chickens with as many wings as possible.
"DOUBLE IT!"
This entire fight is simply about LABELING. As if disclosing the fact GMO is present in a container is a danger. This should immediately cause suspicion. Why aren't they proud of the fact?
This reminds me in the mid 1980s during the HIV scare when there was a great push not to allow family members to donate blood for someone undergoing surgery. They claimed by doing this, it implies that regular public banked blood was unsafe. Some states actually made directed donations illegal. Many people got HIV and hep C at that time that shouldn't have. I bet the people who implemented these laws didn't get damaged by them. I wouldnt be surprised if it were revealed the families of Monsanto executives eat only organic.
Miffed;-)
I do beleve these bastards want to get all our money and then kill us off. So many things that just don't make good common sense.
Deadly things.
They can't kill us all off, though. They need minions to do the manual labor.
China.
No, they don't think far enough ahead to realize that they kill thier own market, they just want the profit TODAY.
Monsanto's cafeteria only serves organic....go figure.
Half the people that ate them are either dead or autistic at this time so you don't hear as much as you would otherwise.
Ya Bill Gates father was a Eugenics promoter.
Like father like son.
Boycott Monsanto.

Ya Bill Gates father was a Eugenicist.

Boycott Monsanto.
As soon as the human is no longer defined in terms of freedom and transcendence but in terms of genes, the definition of man – and hence, also, that of humanism – is wiped away.
Jean Baudrillard, the Illusion of the End, 1992
gmo foods, like fluoridated water, is the bankster-nazi-rockefeller-bush crime syndicate to control americans and to make them slaves....hitler ordered fluoride in the water of conquored countries to make them more docile - hitler was not in the least bit concerned about anyone's health or teeth...the reason fluoride is so effective at control is that it demonstrably lowers iq.
and this crap about labeling is bullshit....so the nazis announce that they use gmo food - people will still consume it...it's like the nsa spying - people can't see the intrusions, so they don't care. and they believe that they are not victims because they don't rate - which is another stupid thought induced by low iq and propaganda corporate education.
