Glenn Greenwald's Farewell (For Now) Letter: "Stand Against The Attack On Press Freedoms In The US"

Tyler Durden's picture

Originally appearing in The Guardian:

On leaving the Guardian

Reporting the NSA story hasn't been easy, but it's always been fulfilling. It's what journalism at its crux is about, and we must protect that

As many of you know, I'm leaving the Guardian in order to work with Pierre Omidyar, Laura Poitras, Jeremy Scahill and soon-to-be-identified others on building a new media organization. As I said when this news was reported a couple of weeks ago, leaving the Guardian was not an easy choice, but this was a dream opportunity that was impossible to decline.

We do not yet have an exact launch date for the new outlet, but rest assured: I'm not going to disappear for months or anything like that. The new site will be up and running reasonably soon.

In the meantime, I'll continue reporting in partnership with foreign media outlets (stories on mass NSA surveillance in France began last week in Le Monde, and stories on bulk surveillance of Spanish citizens and NSA's cooperation with Spanish intelligence have appeared this week in Spain's El Mundo), as well as in partnership with US outlets. As I did yesterday when responding to NSA claims about these stories, I'll also periodically post on my personal blog – here – with an active comment section, as well as on our pre-launch temporary blog. Until launch of the new media outlet, the best way to learn of new stories, new posts, and other activity is my Twitter feed, @ggreenwald. My new email address and PGP key are here.

I'm gratified by my 14-month partnership with the Guardian and am particularly proud of what we achieved together over the last five months. Reporting the NSA story has never been easy, but it's always been invigorating and fulfilling. It's exactly why one goes into journalism and, in my view, is what journalism at its crux is about. That doesn't mean that the journalists and editors who have worked on this story have instantly agreed on every last choice we faced, but it does mean that, on the whole, I leave with high regard for the courage and integrity of the people with whom I've worked and pride in the way we've reported this story.

As I leave, I really urge everyone to take note of, and stand against, what I and others have written about for years, but which is becoming increasingly more threatening: namely, a sustained and unprecedented attack on press freedoms and the news gathering process in the US. That same menacing climate is now manifest in the UK as well, as evidenced by the truly stunning warnings issued this week by British Prime Minister David Cameron:

British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Monday his government was likely to act to stop newspapers publishing what he called damaging leaks from former US intelligence operative Edward Snowden unless they began to behave more responsibly.

"If they (newspapers) don't demonstrate some social responsibility it will be very difficult for government to stand back and not to act," Cameron told parliament, saying Britain's Guardian newspaper had "gone on" to print damaging material after initially agreeing to destroy other sensitive data.

There are extremist though influential factions in both countries which want to criminalize not only whistleblowing but the act of journalism itself (pdf). I'm not leaving because of those threats – if anything, they make me want to stay and continue to publish here – but I do believe it's urgent that everyone who believes in basic press freedoms unite against this.

Allowing journalism to be criminalized is in nobody's interest other than the states which are trying to achieve that. As Thomas Jefferson wrote in an 1804 letter to John Tyler:

Our first object should therefore be, to leave open to him all the avenues to truth. The most effectual hitherto found, is the freedom of the press. It is, therefore, the first shut up by those who fear the investigation of their actions.

I hope everyone who believes in basic press freedoms will defend those journalistic outlets when they are under attack – all of them – regardless of how much one likes or does not like them.

Finally: thanks, most of all, to my readers and commenters who participate in so many ways in the journalism I do. I've always said that my favorite aspect of online political writing is how interactive and collaborative it is with one's readers: that has always been, and always will be, crucial in so many ways to what I do.

Who cares? Is he trustworthy, credible and honest is what matters. Sexual addiction is a problem across the board. If he can keep it in the pants, he is neither a liability nor threat to the cause of changing status quo. He also doesn't have a ball and chains which is probably why he is as forthcoming as he is. Gays can be pretty passionate about activism. They've fought their rights battle and if some of them are able to channel that activist energy to fight the machine, then all the power to them!

What does the straight side do? Obey and listen, go to church and get indoctrinated. The churches are a big problem of American complacency and civil obedience. Churches could turn this thing on a dime if they started preaching against the machine, against the elite and against the power of FIAT.

first of all, let me say for the past 3 years i have reaaaalllly appreciated what greenwald has written for us... that being said. snowden=ellsburg. greenwald /ebay ceo=new york times. all fine and dandy then, but look at it with your 20/40 hindsight (we still don't really know all the details-it's a little blurry)and it's hard to see them as 100% good guys. now, add a healthy dose of conspiranoia and some good research-  http://www.rense.com/general96/saving.html  and the fact that scahill and greenwalds names came up in the last communications  from hastings.... and all i'm sayin' is- even he might not know how he's being played.

There is little doubt he went power mad with his witch hunts, but I think the premise was valid. As is typical, anyone pushing back against the communist agenda will be painted as an extremist whether they be one or not. Today, anyone against "progress" is an extremist as we progress forward towards the agenda.

Unless of course their grievances are irrelevant to the powers that be. In that case shut up and be quite!

The constitution was suppose to be a protection of the people from the State. There can be no confusion about that. As a now living document as applied to an obviously ignorant and foolish public, it means that those protections only apply to those running our government and dominant institutions. As we see, Obama does not see himself as part of government but as an autocratic representative of the enlightened people and his duty as such to administer to us (the vunerable ignorant) as he best sees fit. In his view he is not the government but one of us, thereby the constitution is protecting him from "the government" not protecting us from him. He arbitrarily imposes rules upon us through executive orders transmitted through the various agencies he controls (all of which are dominated by like thinkers). He sees the constitution as no barrier to his powers what so ever and flouts them in our face. He does not respond to any allegations of wrong doing or inneptness. We still have nothing regarding Benghazi, witnesses still prohibitted from testifying. Nothing of fast and furious, nothing of IRS profiling and nothing from other countless abuses and criminal behaviors. No, he is not subject to the laws of our country and is immune to the limits the constitution.

Not to justify the repression in Venezuela, but the entire reason for Chavez and his support was the fact that, in spite of great wealth flowing into Venezuela from its oil sales, nothing was getting to the masses of deperately poor. Everything was going to the rich, who continued to enrich themselves while repressing the masses. Chavez turned that around, hence his popularity. Rich people everywhere, take notice.

People are not born 'duplicitous'. They are born with Free Will, which they may exercise for good (beneficial to humanity) or evil (destructive to humanity). It is quite possible to become wealthy and successful while keeping ones honor and integrity intact. To subscribe to evolution is to submit one's self to mere chance or circumstance as the defining forces of ones existence. People must stop acting as though life is something that just happens to them, as if they are the victims of some cosmic prank.....

I don't think evolution and personal accountability are mutually exclusive. On the contrary, I think evolution is borne of people/things actively searching out the best and/or easiest traits/course of action.

If you're not an active participant in life your genes will die out.

Conflating evolution and chance may not have been the best way to prove your point, but I agree that it is important to actively participate and guide one's own life to the best of your ability.

It's not good OR bad.   The DNA doesn't think, it just reproduces itself.

Look,   we're in a Diety reality show here.   The Diety's have to create a planet of life.   Our Diety is using DNA to pick the most-fit life form.  WhoTF knows what the other Dieties are doing.

Each week, the Dieties battle their life forms from competing worlds.   Eventually our Diety will throw us into the ring and the winning life forms on this planet will battle another Diety's winning life forms.    It's the highest pulling show in the Universe.     All the Dieties watch it.

I'm betting on the cockroaches, personally.

It may be a feature of evolution, but like other dangerous bugs, it needs to be squashed.  Humanity has always had this fight.  In America, the general population did a good job of valuing honor over duplicity for a long time.  Now, the lies and cheating have become so blatant and permeated so deeply, we may well be doomed to this downward spiral.  It sure feels that way.

Re:  we may well be doomed to this downward spiral

You might be doomed (and I might be doomed) but the sociopath and their DNA bling aren't doomed.

It's just an evolutionary process.   The sociopaths who create the best bullshit are higher evolved humans than that dumbasses who beleive their bullshit.

Government + bullshit = politics
Morals + bullshit = religion
Craft + bullshit = splatter-art.

The sociopaths who can create the best bullshit eat the dumbasses alive.   Bullshit is just a weapon.  Sociopaths use bullshit, cats use claws.

It's not good or bad,   it just is.

No, NO difficult decisions will be made.

When it comes to the 4 F's of life (Food, Fear, Fighting, and sex) there is no thinking.   The sociopaths feast off the lessor evolved humans.   Period.  NO decisions are made.   It's simple survival of the fittest.   And bullshit is the weapon of choice when sociopaths are killing dumbasses.

IF it is neither 'good or bad' (amoral) then it cannot be unjust. If there are no morals (standards) there is no injustice. IF Evolution is the driving force behind humanities existence then there is no higher purpose, or accountability for the evils of mankind, therefore no injustice.....IF, as you say everything 'just is', your miserable anger at perceived injustice is quite in vain.......

Yes,   but politics like religion, splatter-art, and model airplanes is just another OCD (Obsessive Compulsive disorder).

Like most people on here, I've got political OCD.   Not much we can do about how our brain happened to be configured.    Mental illnesses are just part of life.

Most people never master their own obsessions or weaknesses. They constantly rail against those they perceive as taking their rights and freedoms yet still will not take responsibility for themselves. Everything is blamed on circumstance or in your case DNA. This has been the message of the left for many years now, that none of us are responsible for our failings. It is a shared burden that we must all bear and collectivization is the only tool the will suffice. Morality tells us we have a choice, we are not born into a preset unbreakable mold. Our base animal instincts are always at hand and it is up to us to choose differently. The world is what we make it rather than us being a product of our world. Perspective.

The pathologically optimistic reproduce rapidly.

There a sucker born every minute.

The reality is that corporations, governments, the American people. wealthy individuals, people around the world that understand what damage is being done and in general every entity that wishes to survive are at war with the Washington D.C. globalists, Wall street banks and their owners, and the globalists in Europe.

Finally everyone is fighting the enemy on tens of thousands of fronts.

I believe the people will get to pull the capstone from the top of their pyramidal structure this go round. The greater the mass of wealth and tech that turns against them the faster they will fall.

Long live the revolution.

Good job of identifying the forces that must be overcome.

On the other hand, a lot more people are waking up, and as the previous post noted, it is an international awakening.

Furthermore, as the pressures grow on the Federal budget, many of these entities will be fighting each other for their "share".  That is when the chance for meaningful change may be ripest.

"National Security" is justification for just about anything.

No coincidence that the crimes of late are being committed by the "National Security" Agency.

It's a small step from reporting facts to promoting agendas and from objectivity to obfuscation.

The propagandist gets paid better than the journalist, and is more popular with their boss and the propagandized masses.

It takes effort to examine facts and to be objective, and to do the moral and just thing in the face of an emotional rabble alternately coddled and whipped into an irrational zeal for means justified by an illusory end.

It’s not just the press that faces censorship; it’s the people. Now the tyranny cuts to the quick: to the Bill of Rights, to freedom of speech. Can the chains be far behind?  Prohibiting criticism of the ruler leads quickly to prohibiting criticism of the State.

After that, there’s no recourse.

Man Wears Obama Costume to Work Halloween Party, Company Orders All 750 Employees to Attend “Diversity Training”… | Via Weasel Zippers

A Kentucky medical center has ordered all of its employees to undergo diversity training after a worker wore a costume of President Obama to the hospital’s annual Halloween party last Friday.

As WZZTV reports, an employee at the Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville, Ky., wore an Obama mask and straitjacket to the party, escorted by fellow workers dressed in police gear, and performed a skit entitled “VIP Special Delivery.” The outfits and skit won third place in a group costume contest.

The costumes spawned enough complaints that the hospital is now requiring all 750 employees to attend diversity training. Because of privacy rules, the hospital can’t say whether the employees who wore the costumes have been disciplined. In addition, they’ve has asked employees not to wear ethnic or political costumes to next year’s party.

As America’s leadership devolves into a cabal of useless idiots – all appointed for their gender, their race, their crony connections, their willingness to sell out the country to lobbyists, and/or their leftist socialist ideology – the best and the brightest and the most patriotic are hunted down and forced to flee to welcoming nations.

So ObamaCare gets a failed website designed by cronies of Michelle Obama and Valerie Jarrett – America’s politically correct leaders – and Putin gets Edward Snowden – America’s discard.

Some countries emerge; some submerge.

Viewing the American Police State in the Republican versus Democrat paradigm is really outdated. To look for cheap political points to boost one of the two so called American parties is to buy into the elites model of rule and repression. Mr. Bush and Mr. Obama are the same guy only in a different suit. Those who are hung up on social issues are the useful idiots that are manipulated to keep the two parties in charge. Switching one party for the other, in the case of Obama for Bush has done what?

Obama, same economic team in charge, same military team in charge, same intelligence team in charge, same central banker, same bank bailouts, same wars, same invasion of privacy, same CIA/NSA/DEA.

The next president should be a republican, as Americans love to buy into the party switching mechanism for change. So shall we look forward to what this Republican will do? Perhaps Obama care will fall, this is simply a bill that gives private insurance companies a captive customer base. When it is gone, nothing of any consequence will change. The elites who run the economy and the police state will only up their game under cover of a friendly republican president. More spies, more wars, more central bank power. I suggest to you ZH readers that there is ONLY one party, and they play you two party advocates for fools. This is the game they hide behind. America is a democracy and you have the power to change the system via supporting the Republican or Democratic party. I hardly think informed people can believe that model is real. Were the Morman guy president, we would be in the same place as we are now, perhaps even worse as his loyalty to israel is so absolute that we would already be at war with Syria and Iran, and perhaps a proxy war with Russia and CHina as they are not going to let Iran fall.

I wish people would wake up and "get it". Both parties are owned by the same banking and corporate leaders. The same globalist elites run and command the US politicians and military rulers of this nation. In fact, if you add Banks + Central bank + military + intelligence agencies with the masters of US Corporations, you have the leaders and rulers of everything in America. There are a few minor players like religious leaders and Old Money who still hold a sliver of power inside the ruling circles. But you, as an American, YOU are NOT even in consideration, let alone a democratic, influence via voting, on the in power elites of America, who are increasingly a global cabal.

I keep reading partisan shit on this site and it is PISSING ME OFF!!!!!

As if Bush or Obama are any different - READ MY LIPS - they are PUPPETS - MINIONS.

They are POWERLESS.  They have the same minders.

If they or any politician tried to go against the REAL POWER - they would be destroyed IMMEDIATELY.

If they someone how were able to start to effect change - they would be DEAD.

What really pisses me off is that what I am seeing playing out on this site is EXACTLY what they want - pit you fucking morons against one another so that you fail to see the real problem - and you waste your energies insulting one another.

OPEN YOUR FUCKING EYES - BOTH PARTIES ARE YOUR ENEMY - WHEN YOU VOTE YOU MAKE A FOOL OF YOURSELF BECAUSE IT MEANS YOU ARE STUPID - YES STUPID - LIKE A DONKEY - BECAUSE YOU ARE WASTING GASOLINE GOING TO THE VOTING STATION TO DO SOMETHING THAT IS TOTALLY MEANINGLESS.

YOU ARE NO DIFFERENT THAN A CITIZEN OF THE FORMER USSER - THEY VOTED TOO - BUT THE CANDIDATES WERE FROM THE SAME PARTY - YOU ARE DOING THE SAME GODDAM THING - THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE HERE.
