Are Conspiracy Theories The Biggest Threat To Democracy?
What is the common element between Liborgate, the Fed manipulating capital markets, China hoarding gold, and the recent ubiquotous NSA spying revelations? At one point, before they became fact, they were all "conspiracy theories" as were the Freemasons, the Illuminati, McCarthy's witch hunts, 9/11, and so many more. The same theories, which - don't laugh - are now part of a Cambridge University study titled Conspiracy and Democracy, which looks at the prevalence of conspiracy theories and what they tell us about trust in democratic societies, about the differences between cultures and societies, and why conspiracy theories (ostensibly before they become fact) appear at particular moments in history. But, at its core, whether conspiracy theories will, as the BBC summarizes, it, eventually destroy democracy.
Because, supposedly, it is not the corruption at the top echelons of government, the ultimate usurpation of power by assorted globalist money groups "never letting a crisis go to waste", that plunder wealth from what is left of the middle class and hands it over, via latent inflation, asset bubbles and capital appreciation to the 1% peak of society's wealth pyramid (in the US), or kleptofascist, unelected bureaucratic groups seeking the "greater good" despite the complete tear of the social fabric (in Europe) that is a threat to democracy.
No - you see it is evil conspiracy theories and the theorists that spin them that are the biggest threat to the "democratic" way of life.
The BBC has more on this amusing, if potentially troubling, avenue:
"The reason we have conspiracy theories is that sometimes governments and organisations do conspire," says Observer columnist and academic John Naughton. It would be wrong to write off all conspiracy theorists as "swivel-eyed loons," with "poor personal hygiene and halitosis," he told a Cambridge University Festival of Ideas debate. They are not all "crazy". The difficult part, for those of us trying to make sense of a complex world, is working out which parts of the conspiracy theory to keep and which to throw away.
Mr Naughton is one of three lead investigators in a major new Cambridge University project to investigate the impact of conspiracy theories on democracy.
The internet is generally assumed to be the main driving force behind the growth in conspiracy theories but, says Mr Naughton, there has been little research into whether that is really the case. He plans to compare internet theories on 9/11 with pre-internet theories about John F Kennedy's assassination.
Like the other researchers, he is wary, or perhaps that should be weary, of delving into the darker recesses of the conspiracy world.
"The minute you get into the JFK stuff, and the minute you sniff at the 9/11 stuff, you begin to lose the will to live," he told the audience in Cambridge.
Like Sir Richard Evans, who heads the five-year Conspiracy and Democracy project, he is at pains to stress that the aim is not to prove or disprove particular theories, simply to study their impact on culture and society.
Impact on culture and society... and then judge: because if heaven forbid the fabled institution of higher learning that is Cambridge - the progenitor of many a statist thinkers - finds that conspiracy theories are a danger to fine, upstanding, democratic society... then what?
Why are we so fascinated by them? Are they undermining trust in democratic institutions?
No, but a far better question is do conspiracy "theories", at least until confirmed, simply provide the beholder with a far more skeptical view of a world than the one spoon fed by a complicit media, whose sole purpose is to perpetuate and multiply - hence enrich - the advertising dollars of the status quo? And is the long overdue questioning of everything that emanates from institutions of power a bad thing, or were people simply too lazy to think for themselves and let the government do it, at least until said "cognitive outsourcing" led to the second great depression of 2008?
David Runciman, professor of politics at Cambridge University, the third principal investigator, is keen to explode the idea that most conspiracies are actually "cock-ups".
"The line between cock-up, conspiracy and conspiracy theory are much more blurred than the conventional view that you have got to choose between them," he told the Festival of Ideas.
"There's a conventional view that you get these conspirators, who are these kind of sinister, malign people who know what they are doing, and the conspiracy theorists, who occasionally stumble upon the truth but who are on the whole paranoid and crazy. "Actually the conspirators are often the paranoid and crazy conspiracy theorists, because in their attempt to cover up the cock-up they get drawn into a web in which their self-justification posits some giant conspiracy trying to expose their conspiracy.
"And I think that's consistently true through a lot of political scandals, Watergate included."
Such a "complex" and profoundly introspective theory - truly something only a Cambridge professor could come up with.
[Runciman] is also examining whether the push for greater openness and transparency in public life will fuel, rather than kill off, conspiracy theories.
"It may be that one of the things conspiracy theories feed on as well as silence, is a surfeit of information. And when there is a mass of information out there, it becomes easier for people to find their way through to come to the conclusion they want to come to.
"Plus, you don't have to be an especial cynic to believe that, in the age of open government, governments will be even more careful to keep secret the things they want to keep secret. "The demand for openness always produces, as well as more openness, more secrecy."
You mean... like the NSA spying on everyone to be abreast of just what everyone knows?
Or does that mean that the Fed's faux transparency affair is nothing but a red herring designed to redirect attention from the Fed's true intentions somewhere else?

That said, having been accused of a conspiratorial bent on a few occasions, we kinda, sorta see where this is going, and will go so far as to venture that in a few years, the Cambridge study's conclusions (which certainly will cast all paranoid and crazy conspirators in a culpable light and worth of "social isolation"), will be escalated to enforce that anyone found of harboring "conspiratorial" thoughts will be bound and shackled in whatever WIFI-free dungeon the local host Big Brother government has created precisely for this ulterior subclass of humans.
But for now - conspire away... and upon exposing the deep lies beneath the surface of "democracy" - since the mainstream media simply refuses to be painted in the same paranoid and crazy brush - remember to promptly depart for the "evil undemocratic empire" that is Russia...

I like Zero Hedge's dry sense of humour when discussing that kind of bullshit, which exemplifies what I refer to as the Bizarro Mirror World: EVERYTHING IS PROPORTIONATELY BACKWARDS. Neolithic Civilization is primarily a social pyramid system based on slavery, in which the biggest bullies' bullshit social stories are able to dominate, so that enough people are kept ignorant and afraid, so that the many can be controlled and exploited by a few. In that context, almost the whole of human history has been one vast conspiracy of huge lies, backed up with lots of violence. The driving forces behind those developments were written about in the first book on the Art of War, which starts by saying success in war is based on deceits, and ends by saying that spies are the most important soldiers. Thousands of years of advancing science and technology have amplified that many orders of magnitude, to astronomical sizes.

Conspiracies are so common they are part of human nature and so it is as stupid to use the term 'conspiracy theorist' as it is to claim you are a weed theorist if you believe there are weeds in your garden. The term is an oyxmoron and is only being used to enable lots of real conspiracies to remain hidden. Starting at about the 5:30 mark into that video, Mark Crispin Miller discusses what he found out when he was researching his 2005 book, Fooled Again. The most interesting point that he made is that there is a DECLASSIFIED CIA document, from back in the 1960s, which explicitly states that they directed their operatives in the mass media to use the derogatory "conspiracy theory" style argument, in order to discredit theories about the assassination of President Kennedy.
That is a video interview with an expert about election fraud (which the mass media has tended to deliberately ignore) who speaks about investigating where the mass media's uses of the phrase "conspiracy theory" came from, or rather when that kind of public relations attack first became the primary public relations, propaganda responses. Not surprisingly, that first happened to deal with the stories about the assassination of President Kennedy, which, I believe, was the original act of murder that was behind the history leading to 9/11 mass murders! Anyone who seriously takes enough time to look into history realizes that we are on an exponential growth curve of dishonesty, backed by coercions, which has become runaway systems of legalized lies, backed by legalized violence. It seems to me that the paid trolls must be watching the "New Comments" sidebar on Zero Hedge, and may have a list of names to vote down anything they post, because of the speed with which the red down arrows appear to show up. Often, with lightning speed, a down arrow will appear on a new comment, then, much later and slower, a lot more green up arrows will accumulate.
Paid trolls are compensated by the hour to discredit radical plants. It's the internet economy in full effect. It must be, because in real life, the red is on top, and the green is on the bottom of a traffic signal. That's the killer clue.
Merriam's Dictionary defines the term conspiracy theory as "a theory that explains an event or set of circumstances as the result of a secret plot by usually powerful conspirators".
Many conspiracy theories, not all, are history. An event in the past. Sometimes we get history wrong. We find out later we had erroneous information, happens all the time. It's easy to get history wrong. On conspiracies, I think the human nature to color history inaccurately with built in subtle bias's and the active, purposeful altering of history to alter the future, should also apply to conspiracy theories. In other words, we get it wrong sometimes. I have been fascinated with conspiracies for decades. Things I read many years ago have and are unfolding as I write. Of course colored by my world view and experiences. Hell, fiction is starting to come true (1984). Things I read many years ago also get recycled by others, to what end I don't know.
Bottom line for me is I am careful what I believe. It comes down to your filter. What do you cast aside as completely absurd or completely plausible? Do you recognize when a theory is not reasonably provable? Do you analyze the theories you believe? Turn them inside out?
Believing enough half truths and even slight miss-interpretations can leave you standing on a mountain of lies and nonsense.
That said, there are plenty of conspiracies that are likely true. I have multiple categories for conspiracies. The technique is as follows: NWO strategists create the Problem - by funding , assembling, and training an "opposition" group to stimulate turmoil in an established political power (sovereign country, region, continent, etc.) that they wish to impinge upon and thus create opposing factions in a conflict that the NWO themselves maneuvered into existence. In recent decades, so called opposition groups are usually identified in the media as 'freedom fighters' or 'liberators'.I agree about the filter. For me it comes down to plausibility (physical properties), and incentives. Too many events have challenged, in my opinion, doubt. The shootings, (Sandy Hook, Boston, LAX, and so on), don't make any sense at all. And the media response is that "they were crazy", or false flags "it was terrorists" so that there is no real demonstrable explanantion. In fact the more crazy and non-sensical the story, the easier to make the public believe it actually happened as resported. Its a bit of a paradox for me, and it is at that moment of realization that I call "bullshit" - that the likelihood of the particular event occurring as reported is just as likely as the doubt that surrounds it. I think if anyone is paying any attention at all - even just a little bit - realize without even really knowing (as their gut tells them), that some kind of shinnanigans is at work. Maybe I'm wrong, and all those events were true in every aspect reported. But, I am always left asking questions - questions mostly dealing with the way in which the event was handled and reported, rather than the event itself. Too me, thats the "tell".

not excluded from inside evolution,

greater master plan, or any
supreme masters, for the
social pyramid to build

There only may be lesser plans
in the minds of lesser masters
that have contributed a little
to the overall evolution of it.
Besides this opinion probably being
more true, it also seems useful to
any program to try to change

"Conspiracy Theory" is just another one of those entrapment terms used to disarm or deflect someone who doesn't believe the propaganda and who works to root out the facts. Other such terms are "anti-semite" and "holocaust-denier" and so many others.
First, if the act was a "conspiracy" is never in question. All these things being questioned are impossible for a single person to pull off. So, once you drop that word you're left with "theory". You don't need a theory when the facts are known. And until then, everything is a theory.
Another word that needs to be examined is "democracy". In plain and simple terms, democracy is "mob rule". Without things like democracy, propaganda is reduced to lobbying.
Smart people and principled people are better at filtering lobbying than the less smart (really "less interested" is a better term) general populace is at filtering propagnda. Thus, a republican form of coordination (government is another bad term ... you coordinate to build a road ... you don't govern to do it) should be favored.

Great post! I majored in history, and had two inquisitive teachers who questioned "official stories" and taught me to drill beneath the headlines. It seems that critically thinking about historical facts equates to being a tinfoil hat wearing nutjob.

Radical, I had a thought when I had to almost have a protological exam to qualify for a 200k mortgage because I was a straight commission sales guy and the bank didn't want to loan me money. Even though I had a successful track record and sterling credit. When they gave a check to the home seller I began to wonder if somewhere nothing more than some digits on a balance sheet had tied me to over a thousand dollars a month for 30 years. Because the thought was fleeting and I was 15 years younger I let it pass. Now I think we are just slaves to banks and governments and are "allowed" a certain quality of life as long as we pay our dues to the masters. If that makes me a conspiracy theorist then so bet it. The serious issue right now is the larger trend developing. The open persecution of whistle blowers, Gov't trying to define who the 'press' is and is not, now we throw in 'conspiracy theorist' as dangerous. The greatest danger to the web of deceit we live in/under is the truth.

The newspaper the Reuters report is likely referring to is Al-Wafd, which printed such an article back in August. The story alleging Barack is himself a member of the Muslim Brotherhood was given additional voice when Brotherhood sympathizer Shadi Hamid of the Brookings Institute, tweeted the article in an attempt to mock it.
To be clear, our work has never concluded that Barack Obama is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood but we did report on the claims.
What the Reuters report totally avoids is the very tangible evidence that at least four members of Obama’s family in Kenya consort with wahhabists and one of those members – Malik Obama – works for an arm of the Sudanese government in his role as Executive Secretary for the Islamic Da’wa Organization (IDO). Sudan is led by Omar al-Bashir, himself a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. While we have also not made the charge that Malik is a Muslim Brotherhood member, it is a far more provable claim.
Tahani Al-Jebali, former Chancellor of the Constitutional Court of Egypt, has made that claim and continues to do so. Even CNN Arabic reported Jebali’s claims this past August.
Youm 7 reported in August that a complaint was filed with Egypt’s Attorney General in which Malik Obama was accused of financing and supporting terrorism in Egypt. The complaint requested Al-Jebali’s input.
Those who make the charge that even if Malik is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, this shouldn’t implicate President Obama, run into a bit of problem, courtesy of the IRS and former Tax Exempt director Lois Lerner. By illegally back-dating the tax exempt status of Malik Obama’s organization, Lerner committed a crime. If she did so under orders from above, this would implicate the Obama administration – and quite possibly Barack Obama himself – in financing terrorism.
Lerner’s actions are not circumstantial; they are quantifiable (even if Congress refuses to investigate). Rep. Mike Kelly, who sits on the House Ways and Means Committee told a caller during a radio town hall on August 29th that the claims against Lois Lerner and Malik Obama are “spot on”. Yet, Congress has been silent on this extremely explosive matter.
There is additional circumstantial evidence that Secretary John Kerry, in deciding to visit Egypt one day before Mursi goes on trial, may be adding to. Consider that in August, Senators John McCain (RINO-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (RINO-SC) traveled to Egypt as emissaries for Barack Obama to help negotiate the release of Muslim Brotherhood prisoners. There is perhaps no U.S. Senator more sympathetic to the Muslim Brotherhood than John McCain.
While McCain and Graham were making the rounds in Egypt, the State Department’s number two – Bill Burns – met quite secretly with Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood deputy and former presidential candidate, Khairat al-Shater in secret for 90 minutes. Al-Shater’s chief of staff at the time – Gehad el-Haddad – attempted to diminish the meeting as being inconsequential and only lasted 10 minutes. It’s since been learned that el-Haddad, like Huma Abedin, whose familial connections to the Brotherhood are steep, also worked for the Clintons.
Speaking of al-Shater, suspicions about why Burns would decide to meet with him include reports that he is the Brotherhood leader in Egypt who has the most evidence against the U.S. President. Some weeks after Burns met with al-Shater, Fox News / AP reported that al-Shater’s son (Saad) was arrested by Egyptian authorities and that the younger al-Shater claimed his father had:

4) the number of Americans receiving benefits under the Supplemental Assistance Program (SNAP), administered by the US Department of Agriculture, also known as Food Stamps, which has doubled under Obama, climbing to a record 47 million Americans, half of them children, even as the stock market's S&P 500 continues setting record highs;

Abstract
A method and an ocean-going vessel are disclosed for more effectively incinerating hazardous liquid wastes at sea. Intermodal shipping tank containers are filled at waste generation sites; transported to dockside and loaded above decks on an incinerator ship; taken out to sea and incinerated in horizontal, liquid burning type incinerators so that the effluents emerge horizontally. Wastes flow by gravity from containers into staging sumps located below decks, and then pumped to incinerator. Pollution abatement tanks, also below decks, collect spilled waste from containers, as well as overflow from staging sumps. Material collected in abatement tanks is pumped into staging sump, and pumped to incinerator. Fuel oil may be introduced into sumps for fueling incinerators to maintain incinerator operation when there is insufficient supply of waste. Effluents are sea-water scrubbed for cooling to eliminate thermal lift and carried promptly into sea.
