CAT is closing its plants in the Northern US and relocating them to the South. Their facilities there and the supply chain that makes parts for them is beefing up considerably, the northern side is withering on the vine quickly.
We supply them at the metal fab shop I work for and we're getting our asses kicked with the flood of orders coming in from them and other relocating firms. Manufacturing in general is heading to the Southeast, some areas are really booming.

Coincidently I was just given the tip to shop at Goodwill and thrift stores for cheap dutch ovens and good seasoned cast iron cookwear to cook over open fires. It seems Grandpa and Grandma's undervalued goods may be what we need to survive soon. Goodwill - the new Williams Sonoma.
Good call. I shop there for polypro thermals, boots, wool sweaters and socks. There's all sorts of good things to be had.

I almost hate to admit it, I shop for most things there. I started noticing it when we brought stuff there. Then I went over two years unemployed and started shopping there. Now I am employed again and combined with Wife we make near or in 1% wage (definately not assets) and I still do 80-90% shopping there.
Three things I have taken away from this mess:
Long shovels, pick axes and hickory handles. Employment problem just got solved.
They are closing *a* small plant that makes heavy mining equipment, it is not their only one in the US by a long shot.
The Chinese have had time to reverse engineer CAT machinery and build it with slave labor.
The off-shoring of production and career employment continues apace.

Kellogg will cut its global work force by 7%DAMN, do I love capitalism. CAT made their bed with the employees, stuck with bad decision after bad decision, and no amount of superior product jargon was going to save the true cost of their products when they were being stalked by competitors. Meanwhile, their competitors made better choices, are located in better tax climates, and on and on and on. The system is working, and CAT is being weeded out of the global market. Others will fill the demand, and at a cost basis they can swallow. (TEREX, CNH, DEERE, JOY, etc) No tears being shed here. Only that CAT damaged themselves, then doubled down, and will continue rearranging chairs on the ship until the bitter end. Emergency measures may save them, but no confidence in this management team to make that choice quickly enough.
Coal will be left in the ground, processed and pumped up as syn-gas and liquids. CAT did a great job of re-inventing the pick-axe and shovel but the supply of mountains to be moved is dimminishing rapidly.
