Trulia Pushes The Panic Button As Young Adults Refuse To Move Out Of Parents' Basements, Get Jobs
Well over a year ago, we first suggested that the conventional wisdom thesis for the bounce in home prices - namely a spurt in household formation - was dead wrong. Sure enough, as has been confirmed empirically, the only reason for the latest dead cat bounce in home prices has been the Fed, and banks complicit in engaging in "foreclosure stuffing." And while it was easy to deflect the topic of just what is driving the housing market (because none of the bulls would want to admit it is just another credit and liquidity-driven bubble) for over a year, with the traditional "things will be back to normal soon" fall back used every time, as time passed and none of the traditional ingredients for a housing recovery fell into place, some started scratching their heads. This came to a boiling point today, when real-estate firm Trulia, looking at the latest Census Bureau data on household formation, finally threw in the towel and rang the panic button as not only have young Americans set anchor in their parents' basement, but even refuse to get a job.
That, and the "foreclosure stuffing" of course, with 53% of vacant homes helf off the market, "the highest share since before the bubble."

And yet:
- Oct. Trulia price, rent monitors show asking prices rose 0.6% m/m in Oct., prices up 11.7% y/y, rents up 2.7% y/y
Why? Just ask Mr. Chairwoman. After all Mr. Chairwoman has been rumored (wrongly) to be very oracular when foreseeing housing bubbles. Like last time supposedly.

They commit most of the murders (except those special abortion murders, of course). They sit around all day wacking off to porn - is that better than sushi lunches? I know a huge number of women who were molested by the stepfathers, and not one guy who was molested by his stepmother. In indigenous societies (and in lots of places since), they drink up the family's food money, right after they get their paycheck. Oh, and last I checked, they tend to start wars. Just like our male chimp relatives do.
It's all due to aggression levels. Men are, since time began, all over the world, more physically aggressive than women. Even the "everyone is alike" anthropologists are willing to admit that. It's not that women have some great moral superiority, but they are less aggressive, and that translates into a lower overall level of truly bad behavior.

Well, I've been called many things in my life and never once was silly uttered. Perhaps these people refrained from doing so to protect my feelings. Are you going to offer any counterevidence to what I wrote? I made several claims; no-one has come up with any studies that counter them.

Men also have been, and are, the overwhelming majority of scientists, inventors, and engineers, not to mention the overwhelming majority of artists, composers and philosophers throughout human history. In my experience, woman are almost invariably too focused on the personal and familial to care or even think about the societal, or really anything that does not touch on their immediate personal lives, and to the extent that they do otherwise, it is usually at a very shallow and emotional level.

Speaking personally, what you say is true. My only statement ( can't even call it a rebuttal) is there is a biological need for this. When I had 2 young children ( I'm not sure if you can relate to this) my view was strictly focused on them and their well being. Yes, I was very unlike myself now. My life was narrow and parochial. I'm not confessing this as something I am ashamed but necessary for a unique time in my life. As my children became older and more independent, my mind slowly evolved outward. I became fascinated with philosophy, politics, society, history,geopolitics, health, small scale farming.... etc.
I'm a good microbiologist but I would never claim to be an eminent scientist by any means ( though I have been fortunate to have worked with a few and have learned so much from them). The beauty of science is it helps to organize ones thoughts in a rational way. The bad part is that humans are innately biased and succumb to temptations to manipulate facts to their personal betterment. Of course, this is not the fault of science.
Years ago I read a book called What Buddha Taught. I damn near lost it when I got to the part where he said " Only a Man can be a Buddha". Yeah, I went into the dark angry part of me. What an asshole! How dare he exclude Women! But after indepth study on what it means to be a Buddha I finally got it. The requirements of Thought and having the ability to not be distracted by things that hook you attention? I'd love to see a woman today attain this. I, myself, can't even come close I'm not ashamed to admit. But I do respect those who can.
I have tried to rise above the average woman you cite. I do care about the things to which you speak. It would do women good if they would explore things outside their narrow shallow worlds. Just as it would enhance men to appreciate the important good qualities of women. Only then can there be a meeting of minds and an easing of tensions.

This is well reasoned. I fully agree with the connectedness to life itself. Men are by their own sexuality separate. They must learn to connect whereas for women it is innate.
I once told a story at a Christmas party that ended up in an entire room of men and women fighting furiously. If a women were standing at the edge of a river where her husband whom she loved dearly and her child were drowning and she could save only one, which would she choose? If a man were in the same situation which would he choose? Of course, everyone tried to skirt the question but when the final choices were made, pandemonium ensued. My only lesson from this was to be less provocative at parties. That was twenty years ago. Somehow,being on this site for a couple of years, I'm guessing those men today would change their answers.
I don't think there are too many women vying for Buddha candidacy. It seems to be diametrically in opposition what they are today. Want is the antithesis of Buddhism. Miffed, I regretted not having fleshed-out my last post above, as I sincerely did NOT mean it as a slam against women in general (and just for the record, I was thinking of women like you as the exceptions to my generalizations).
What I should have added was that my characterization of women as focused on the personal and family spheres of life simply reflects the differing natures of men and women, and does NOT imply that women are 'useless' or inferior to men. Without that focus, families and childrearing would largely not exist, hence human society would not exist. Yin and Yang.
With that said, I cannot help but feel that there is some connection between the widespread political enfranchisement of women and the rise of statism in the last century+. I suspect that even you would not deny that the large majority of women subconsciously yearn for that "father figure" to watch over and protect them, with that role having been taken over by government. EVERY political poll that I have ever seen reflects the fact that women are consistently more in favor of big-government 'solutions' than men. And having attended many libertarian, and Libertarian, conventions and functions, I can assure you that the gender ratio at such gatherings was FAR from 1:1, inevitably being wildly skewed towards male.
Now, if we could only get women en masse to see SOCIETY as a whole as 'the family', maybe they would value freedom more than the illusion of government-granted security.

I cannot agree with this statement unless you are willing to substitute the word "some" for " an absolute". This is an UNDENIABLE FACT of which I am 100% sure. I believe this is true based on the biology of women. It is not judgement. Women have a strong desire for safety and security. I deal with its effects myself. Just the other day when we met with our financial advisor I stated I wanted a $500k policy on my husband in case he died. My husband and our advisor exchanged looks. I apologized but I needed this safety because I cannot live where we do without my husbands physical strength, knowledge of construction, electrical, plumbing etc. My husband thought what I was asking for was emotionally based and not rational. He did not agree with me. Our advisor came to my defense and claimed most women clients of his ask for this. This is the weakness of the weaker sex. I fully admit to you security is an allusion. I hope you haven't lost respect for me. Part of me feels I should learn to do more and not be reliant onmoney and men.
I will agree there is a yearning for a father figure to take care of things that haunts women. The key is to identify it in oneself and grow out of it though life experience and challenges. I have tamed my " beast". It occasionly whispers in my ear but I ignore it. Just as men, whose biology says to fuck everything that opens her legs, must learn the responsibility of sex and family. Women haven't keenly felt the results of their fallacious arguements. The results of their political decisions will ultimately be their own destruction and therefore society as a whole. I see this as plain as day. Perhaps a study of history is needed. Just looking at the debacle of Prohibition.That legislation was the first great triumph for women. This should have been a teaching moment. Instead this was pivotal to Woman's Sufferage movement. I guess some will take that as meaning I believe a woman's sole existence should be popping out babies and making oatmeal which is absolutely untrue. But just as I don't approve a welfare recipient should have the ability to vote for his benefits neither do I approve a woman voting for things that benefit her solely and cause others to be unfairly discriminated. Yes, akak, many women are focused on the personal and familial, to the point of idiocy. If they weren't, the human race would not make it to the next generation. You underestimate how quickly we would die off without that emotion-laden tending activity. Infants require absolutely, constant, unremitting attention; one has to have one's brain completely focused on them. Women who aren't that way either don't reproduce or their kids die; Darwin at work.
But, things are changing. Women are starting to give up on tending, and to do "productive" things instead. They're gradually giving up on being idiots. Funny how that's kind of hard on the infants. And on male egos. Hey, these women are inventing and researching, instead of tending!!! Why can't those women go back to being idiots, so that we guys can do the interesting and noble stuff!!!
You seem to have forgotten that until the early part of the 20th century, or even really the 1970s, women weren't allowed to do many of the lovely "productive" activities you describe. They were forbidden to enter the professions. They were kept at home, like prisoners, not educated as men were; their only value was to reproduce a legitmate next generation. The fear that the next generation would not be legitimate led to incredible constraints on their ability to go places and do things. Any money they earned was not legally theirs; they were not allowed to own property in most times and places; only their parents or husbands could own it for them. A pregnancy meant the absolute end of any puny endeavors they were allowed. Even now - I just asked a friend who spends a lot of time at European universities, how many female professors he knew. He couldn't think of any. Do you really think it's because European women are stupid and don't want the jobs?? Please read a few books that detail what women were permitted to do, at what stages of history. (Real peasant women had more freedoms, of course, but neither peasant women nor peasant men were scientists or artists or inventors unless they entered the bourgeoisie, and then the female constraints applied.)
Anyway, life spans are an issue. So many women used to die in childbirth, that as soon as that phase of their lives was over, they were dead. Now they can have both reproductive and other lives.

The problem with stats is they can not provide detail why a trend is noted. That would be unquantifiable. For instance, delve deeper in to the "men leave women more with cancer" There may be more reasons than your assumption that men are porn watching assholes. But for MSM, it sells more news with the caption "Men leave more women with cancer" than " Multitude of reasons present when men leave women with cancer".
The article you linked is dripping with Yellow Journalism. This is NOT scientific. I loved the conclusion. "This shows men have commitment issues" Oh God thanks for the laugh! This article has been ENGINEERED to illicit a response from you and to feed you mind poison. Especially for you to have a personal experience in the matter. Appealing to things on an emotion level is the oldest trick in the book to manipulate women. Yes, I must admit I have been caught up too in this but when I feel myself responding strongly to something I always stop and focus on facts. That my mother was an investigative reporter helped me immeasurably to see propaganda in print. This is why I don't participate in MSM. ALL of it is HIGHLY slanted. Back up a bit further and ask why this "study" was even performed. Who did it serve? What was the ultimate goal? Would it had even been published if a reverse trend was noted? Questioning will eventually lead you out of the land of manipulation and ultimately out of the Matrix.
I will never say men are better than women. That is absurd. I don't do X vs Y because I will never align myself with any group and be bound by its strictures and rules. In some ways I am very conservative, liberal, anarchist, libertarian,isolationalist, Buddhist, Christian, but I wont accept a label being any of them. I'm a free thinker and will make my own assessment of what's right for me rather than what others want me to think. Instead of spouting "Men are aggressive" or "Men start Wars" focus on understanding men and their motivations and perceptions. Think of it this way, how happy does it make you when men here say " women are gold digging cunts!"? And you think stating the things you do make them feel good?

Obviously I am no man basher. Please read my posts with some care. There is loads of data re male aggression, and loads of data re males leaving sick spouses (my brother, who is a social psych prof, did a survey of the data for family reasons at one point). Criticizing my source is easy; finding counter data would be hard. You can't and won't.
You can get a lot of up arrows on ZH for saying misogynistic things, like calling sorority girls bitches. I value both men and women.
BTW, I don't usually give people advice on posts. But you should do anything you can to get your daughter another job, even if it means giving her your last cent. I think you are underestimating how dangerous working in a liquor store is for anyone, but especially a young woman. Saying that she is strong-willed is no excuse, unless you have offered her every penny you have to get her out, and spent your every spare moment finding her something else to do. It is stunningly irrational to think that something terrible won't happen. Who could have thought she would end up tortured and raped and decapitated in a ditch? Who could have prevented it?? It is extremely rational to argue that a young woman is not safe working in a liquor store. And it is extremely rational to urge someone to urge their daughter to find another job, and to spend money to encourage it. Look at the argument again - it is an appeal to reason, made ardently. This is not what debate is really about. I experience emotion like any human. Yes, I get angry,sad,afraid,guilty, happy, proud and grateful all day long in varying amounts all day. I acknowledge their existance in my life but I try never to be ruled by them. Yes, I called sorority women money grubbing bitches. You call this "misogyny" because you want to label me and put me in a cubby hole. I call my statements a perceived reality based on my personal experience. To properly debate me on this issue you should have cited examples of sorority women and how they have done fabulous things forthe world. To clarify a few points. My mother worked for 10 years as a reporter. Her editor was Pierre Salinger, Kennedy's press Secretary. She quit a fantastic career because she had the attention span and discipline of a gnat. The following 40 years were spent lounging on the couch, gaining weight and participating in a few clubs she found interesting.
My daughter works at a small liquor/ convenient store 6 miles from our house that serves a small housing development. Her best friend tried to get her a job at McDs to get he out of "scum" land. Last month he had a .357 cocked revolver placed between his eyes from a robber ( one of many that we're occurring in that area, the man has been caught thankfully ). My point is there is no safety. It is an illusion. You are the one living in irrational fear. Of course I worry. That is just being a mom. We have procedures in place from my many sheriff friends that keep an eye on things but there are never complete assurances.

Hmm, if we relying on what others have said of us, no-one has ever accused me of being unable to make a valid argument. Majored in philosophy with a 3.6 at at a top five university, in a top 3 philosophy department. Plus I got a professional degree in a field that is associated with the ability to reason. Often one can't present one's entire argument in a post; it has to be fleshed out to be complete.
We have had extremely different life experiences, although we are both white American women of about the same age. My parents are both still alive; they are devoted to each other and have been from day one, although there have been rough patches. Both are highly educated (as yours were, I believe), and have always been fully employed. My father is not a workaholic; in fact he is skeptical about the value of much work. There was no storminess in my childhood, and no deprivation. Neither has mental illness problems (other than depression); both are extremely self-aware. My upbringing was agnostic Protestant (I believe yours was Catholic?). You say that you get "angry, sad, afraind, gullty, happy and proud and grateful" every day; I most assuredly don't get any of those things often or to much of a degree. Our "being in the world" is extremely dissimilar; I think that agreeing to disagree is probably a fruitful path.

I have take primarily scientific courses in college and only a few philosophy courses. I'm no expert in debate nor do I pretend to be. My family was highly educated and I had the lowest IQ. My achievements were all self made and yes I had to work extremely hard for them. I am proud I managed to succeed when my mother claimed i was too stupid to pull it off.

Oh, I've done years and years of therapy; very interesting stuff. A sufficiency of psychologists in my family. The version you did (I looked it up when you described it a while ago) is a brief and inexpensive version that has some real practical use, but doesn't tend to lead to a whole lot of self-knowledge. But that's okay; most people don't want a lot of self-knowledge. However, if you have a history of psychosis in your family (your mom, quite possibly), it might be a good idea to get into, and stay in counseling for the long run, both for its own benefits and in order to nip any incipient problems in the bud.

He goes into the subject I discussed in depth to find personal happiness. The agreements are: Be impeccable with your word, Take nothing personally, Make no assumptions and Always do your best. It is a wonderful little book that my husband and I loved very much. It is very instructive how to release the power of words over you and claim your own personal power. I hope you read it.

Karen, I worked with a lot of women who made it clear every single day that if their husbands got sick they'd be rid of them in a flash. These were ICU nurses. Then one day one of the husbands did get sick (the back pain he had turned out to be renal cancer) and she kicked him out as soon as she could. The other ICU harpies approved. I was horrified and said so. Ewwwww... not a good thing to say.

I should be more empathetic here, perhaps. I just got off the phone with my dad; we spent two hours talking about the politics in my home town (um, all of the condidates were male; hmmm). If I lost my dad when I was young, I would not feel so secure; I might be seeking male approval. And I get along well with my mom (I would have chatted with her but she was heading up to bed), so I don't have issues with women, per se. Just with the human race:)
I am SO HAPPY to see women becoming the artists and scientists and inventors that akak correctly points out, they never have been. Now they can be, and now they are taking those roles in huge numbers, at least in the U.S.. Not that I am knocking childrearing or homemaking, at all.

I had a great relationship with both my parents, who were happily married for over 50 years and are now both deceased. I also have great relationships with my siblings, all of whom are well educated and doing fine. I've been married to the same man for well over 20 years. He's the best person I know.
I went into a field that was female dominated not because it was a role I always wanted to play but because I unexpectedly fell in love with it. I genuinely took great pleasure in being able contribute directly to the health and life of my patients. I was good at my job and I knew that I gave them the best possible care. That it gave me an independent life was a bonus: I could work anywhere in the country and with my degree and additional certs I have aways been highly recruited and paid.

Let me tell you something tarsubil. This has been going on for a long time. My mother tortured my father with endless demands up until his death in 1981. No amount of money was good enough. We lived in expensive homes in Malibu, San Francisco and Ojai. My dad commuted many miles often falling asleep on the road from exhaustion. My mother has no tolerance for my dad feeling stressed and unhappy in her world. Many times I saw him standing at the front door trying to put on a " happy face" for our family before he walked inside. She demeaned him at any opportunity. When he died suddenly when I was 21, she insisted my 16 year old brother support her. She wouldn't get off her precious ass. She died this year on mothers day. The happiest day for me and my brothers life I am sad to say. One year previously she was diagnosed insane. Some bizarre psychopathic syndrome. This really answered a lot of questions for me and helped me shed a lot of inappropriate guilt. I'm beginning to think there might be a lot more undiagnosed insane women out there. They may be able to function visibly in society but, believe me, they are leaving a trail of tears of many hurt people.

Years ago I was working with a group of Koreans helping orient (sic) them to working in the US and I was ex-plaining the very western idea of 'fair play'. You are right. When I was 16 and working at Arby's making $3.50, two of my work associates were sharing an apartment and going to junior college. Yes, they complained all the time money was tight but they could make rent. This is absolutely not possible today. I worked and went to private college and lived with my parents. I paid my tuition myself( $5000/ year) but my parents paid my room and board. This was on a fast food salary ,a job on campus and I boarded 2 horses at my house each for $50/ month.To simply criticize kids today as being unmotivated is very unfair. Why have any motivation if there is absolutely no chance to succeed in this sham of a country?

When I got out of undergrad ~30 year ago, I went to a guy I wanted to work for (i.e. learn from) and asked for a job. He wasn't hiring so I pulled out my budget and showed him how I could afford to work for free for six months, and guaranteed him that he'd want to hire me after only two. He hired me on the spot and he paid me from Day One. It was a pittance and I was living on ramen noodles and mileage reimbursement checks, but I was getting paid and sopping up knowledge and experience like a sponge.
Approaching an entrepreneur in that manner was my advice to new grads--at least until ~10 years ago. Now I don't know what to tell kids in a job market where people willing to prove themselves by working for free are a dime a dozen. Scratch that; I guess they're "free for a dozen."
And just to make their prospects worse, very few young people fresh out of school have ANY work experience nowadays. My first real job was washing dishes at age 15, and there were plenty of such jobs to be had back then in the '70's, by cracky. But now, all of those low-level jobs are taken by fully-grown men; typically immigrants. I'm not saying that I parlayed my dish washing expertise into future earnings, but those first few shitty jobs damn sure taught me to do what was necessary to show up on time and work hard if I wanted to keep getting paid. (A whopping $2.10 per hour, IIRC.)

Yes... You actually see the veins, the arteries, the Nerves, the DEAD, decaying cooked carcass as you dissect it on your dinner plate.
I didn't eat Chicken for YEARS after that...nor much Beef or Pork or any Meat Products, after that...at all. It had to be throughly disguised so that I would not think about it...for many years.
I could eat Shrimp, Crab and Lobster as they were more like Oceanic Insects. They have an Exoskeleton...They are a good Protein source but they are as much of a Bottom Feeder as a Cockroach.

I live in a world where I get to see Ken Dolls pulled out of rectums and liter sized coke bottles out of vaginas after days of festering. I have been involved in the slaughtering of beef, turkeys and chickens. I broke the intestine of a steer that I was helping to load in a tractor bucket. The farm boys laughed hard when I nearly passed out from the vision and stench.

Perhaps you are a metrosexual and have never experienced " Reality on Planet Earth" Life is not pretty cellophane packages lined up in the meat case. Life is dirty. Life is cruel and unfair. Life doesn't care about you and me. I have no problem eating vegetables. I do so predominantly myself. But Veganism? That just makes me laugh. It's more a religion for those to feel they are above it all and better than others.
