Guest Post: Obama's 'Socialism' Experiment Brought Home

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama’s socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.
The professor then said, “OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama’s plan”.. All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A…. (substituting grades for dollars – something closer to home and more readily understood by all).
After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.
The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.
As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.
To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. Could not be any simpler than that.
Here are possibly the 5 key points about such an experiment:
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

In this "bailout society" we have now I'd argue that it is hard to say exactly who is holding the gun. Just call it what it is, corporate fascism. Capitalism implies a respect for capital dumbass. We haven't had that in America since 1971, potentially 1913.

my friends wife already did this but slightly different at the community college she teaches at
basically the same premise, but the grades of those who voted to be democrat at the beginning of the term were all averaged together, while those who voted to be republican were left to their own devices
same result as above for the democrats, but the republican voters had a bell curved grade that was from C to A+

The quality of life goes down until people are fed up enough to do something about it. This is the socialism that George Soros, Jaime Dimon and Lloyd Blankfein see as the future...do you see why? This is what the rich bitch Nancy Pelosi and the Las Vegas loser Harry Reid want. For people who open their eyes and see the truth they will find the lies within all the promises these people make, just like Barry's lies on healthcare. They promise to give people tons of free shit to get elected but what they don't tell them is that the cost of that free shit will destroy their lives eventually bankrupt our country. As you say, I guess - I don't know Martin - but it's a good story and a valid point.
It would be a better point if it were not about healthcare. The problem is that many get sick or injured regardless of the "studying" (care) or "diligence" (industry) put into their lives. Sometimes homework doesn't matter. Ask someone who has cancer.
Health (or illness) may be the result of stupid behavior but often is the result of something completely out of the control of the injured or sick. It's all very well to be Dickensonian* about it - until it's your wife or husband or child. Then you go all John Q and everyone slings terrorism arrows at you for defending your family.
Those who eat, smoke, drink their way into illness and have only themselves to blame maybe get a special pass: You break it, you own it - it's all on you. Otherwise, civilization demands reasonable health access and reasonable prices.

The above experiment is stupid, and in no way reflects America. A more realistic experiment would be as follows:
On the first day of class,
-- tell everyone wearing blue that they will be graded on a curve from F to C- regardless of what they do.
-- tell everyone who lives in an even-numbered zipcode that their grade will be raised by one letter relatvie to their actual achievement, or two levels if their parents complain and know someone higher up.
-- tell half the class they can't even do this class, because their seats were given to students from China so please leave now, and if any of the other students complain about anything, their seats will also be given to Chinese.
Then see how hard everyone studies. You will get America exactly.
If you want to create a classroom model of the US it should look something like this:
You have a class of 10 students.
There will be three tests through the semester. There is a total of 100 marks shared out according to your results.
Students will have a starting number of marks as follows:
1 student will start with 200 marks
1 will start with 50
3 will start with 30
3 will start with 15
2 will start with zero.
Pass mark at the end of the semester is 100 marks.
Half way through the course, everyone who has more that 50 marks will lose 10. To be split equally between those with less than 20 and those with more than 100
Now go see who works hard on the tests.

I agree with the sentiment, except for the Bill Gates part. Gates got rich by selling shares of his shitty software company to mutual funds. Mutual Funds were a cottage industry until congress started passing laws exempting money gifted to wall street from taxation (IRA, 401(k) etc.).

NEW YORK STUDENTS CANT FAIL
New York school teachers are not allowed to grade on a 0-100 scale, the traditional scale meant to show, ya know, the full range of accomplishment from utter failure to perfection. Instead, teachers can’t hand out a grade lower than 55 for any reason, including if a student doesn’t even show up to do any work. So in New York, you don’t need to even attend school to get a mark of 55. Since you need a 65 to pass a semester, a student needs to pull an 85 on their first three marks to then never show up again and pass with a 65 average.
The reason for not using the full range of grades? A student with a low mark would have a tough time making up the grade. So if you fail, you’d have a tough time not being a failure as a result of your failure. But when you can’t go under 55, you’re never really a failure. You’re all equal charity case losers with unearned marks and a piss poor education, just like the school board intended.

I actually know a woman doing homework for her college freshman daughter. That was the pattern they followed for her entire life. Thought they were 'helping' but the kid.

Fitter instead for breastfeeding, cleaning and cooking and urban gossip...so I'd wager the odds are that HardAssets will eventually be proven right. Her degree will fast track her into management. Especially if she works for gov't, were she will make decisions that you must comply with. All the while believing she is actually more intelligent than avg because of her degree.
She was always shy and that sometimes made attending school difficult. Lots of people are shy. They didnt let the kid try and fail and find out that she was o.k. afterwards. And then try again and eventually succeed. They never let her build her own self confidence.
I wasn't surprised to hear that she chose psychology as a major when she first entered college. She started her sophmore year & I hear she changed to a different major . I hope she enters a field where she can have some financial independence and truly get out on her own. She's actually a nice kid.

The first picture was of a National Merit Scholar, the second of a National Achievement something something. One of these is prestigious.
He posted it. The way people talk about this is so fucking ignorant.
Of course disadvantaged kids should have lower standards for scholarships. Where I grew up we were given every possible advantage, nobody had to worry about scholarships, the graduation rate was something like 99.9% and it was expected you'd go to a decent post-secondary. I received multiple scholarships without applying for them - my teachers applied on my behalf because it made the school look good. Most people got scholarships, doubt if they really needed the money.
Two ways to look at this - myself and my classmates were a group of superior geniuses, or we were simply given a lot of advantages. I'm going with the latter and based on that it doesn't make any sense to have people starting out with major handicaps competing toe to toe with folks who had it made from the start.
James_Cole - yours is a thoughful perspective. John Taylor Gatto was NY State and NYC Teacher of the Year (several times, I believe). He taught throughout NYC in rich schools and in poor ones. He said that once you got past the rough edges, & provided the proper learning tools, there wasn't a lot of difference in the abilities of kids from uptown Manhattan versus those from Harlem. And, often the poor kids performed better because they were survivors who hadn't been sheltered by their parents. They were better able to think on their feet. When he expected more out of kids, they met those higher expectations. It didn't matter if they were rich, poor, white, black, etc It doesn't take a lot of money to provide kids with those learning tools . . . they used to do so in one room school houses a 125 years ago.
I like to combine two sayings...
1. Actions speak louder than words.
2. Kids become what you think of them.

with respect to your first picture, National Merit Scholarships have nothing to do with race whatsoever. It's nearly all PSAT, grades, and extracurricular accomplishment. Nat Merit Semifinalists are ENTIRELY based on PSAT score. If whites are under-represented vs. Asians among Nat Merit Semifinalists (I don't know that they are but they may well be), then they should STUDY HARDER AND SCORE BETTER ON THE TEST.

The Natl Merit thing is a scam, or at least it was when I paid to take their test. I was a finalist and got several offers from colleges to attend but the financial remuneration for high scoring the test was all of about twenty dollars in 1968. I didn't bother to redeem the fabulous prize.
The funny thing about the test is what I learned later. In my military school with about 200 graduating first class (seniors) was that we had far more than my home county of many tens of thousands of the same age cohort. (I never heard of any getting much either)
I do not know whether the National Merit thing is as much of a scam as it was in 1968, but few things associated with "higher learning" have gotten better than those benighted days.

This reminds me of a similar experiment that was run out of the Haas School of Business in Berkeley. In 2010, after hearing the urban legend story describing a failed socialist economics experiment, a Berkeley professor of economics decided to run a similar "capitalist" experiment with his own class.
As in the urban legend story, he used "grades" as an interpretation of capital. So, at the end of the semester, if you got an "A" you were able to cultivate wealth, and if you got a "F", you remained poor. Except in this case, he took the experiment one step further. Knowing that capitalism has inherent advantages to those already with wealth, he also staggered access to information to represent socioeconomic class.
So those who would represent individuals coming from wealth, he granted more access to knowledge. Therefore, to 1% of the class (in this case, it was one person in a class of 80), he gave complete access to his office hours, old tests, as well as the reading list and text book. To another 5% (4 students representing middle class), he gave the name of the text book he used. And to the remaining students (representing the poor) no guidelines, no office hours to talk to the professor, no textbook, and no access to old tests or any other material. They could attend the lectures, and that was it.
And to represent the limited amount of money in the system (he surmised that not everyone can be billionaires, this isn't mathematically possible), he said he would be handing out a maximum of 5 A's, 30 C's and an unlimited amount of F's. Grades would be based objectively on test scores, there would be no bell curve applied. Students were encouraged to share resources if they wanted, but that the amount of grades were set and no additional grades would be given out, no matter what passing scores were achieved on tests. The professor pointed out that, like minimum wage, if everyone passed then "inflation" would kick in, and no one would effectively pass.
At the end of the semester, consistently, the one student that was given access to a disproportionate amount of "knowledge" (aka wealth) was able to consistently score A's on the tests. Of the majority of the students, who represented the poor, all but one received F's. The majority of the "poor" in the class weren't able to achieve passable grades on the tests, due to the lack of supplemental information required to pass those tests. That said, surprisingly, one of the poor students was able to achieve an "A".
Of the 4% representing middle class, they didn't all succeed either. Because the professor rarely tested from material in lecture, and only supplied guidance in his office hours on material relevant in the book, only 1 of the 4 students achieved a grade. Surprisingly, in this case it was also an "A".
The professor thought this was a huge revelation, as two students were able to raise their "socioeconomic" status to the highest rung, and therefore show the true success of capitalism.
But, after individually interviewing the students, it turns out that the two students (both good looking females) who were able to raise their status were in fact both separately dating the "wealthy" student. In this respect, the "wealthy" student had used his access to wealth to get dates (and apparently sexual favors) with these students, and in exchange he gave them access to the teachers supplemental materials. In the end, the professor thought this was equally interesting, as it effectively showed "crony capitalism", and its inherit problems in unregulated Capitalist markets.
Ah, the traditional path for women of low and moderate socioeconomic means to climb out of their situation - on the coattails of a weathy man.

Although mostly a straight "A" student, I did actually receive an "E" once, during my dismal first year of college, for having stopped attending my calculus class without then bothering to drop it.
