This Is What Happens When You Mate An iPad With A Tesla

Tyler Durden's picture

iTesla, or Tespad Model S(parky)? You decide. From CNET:

An iPad that was demoed at a Vodafone store in Australia burst into flames, according to a report.

A Vodafone store in Canberra, Australia was running an iPad demo model that caused a "burst of flames," according to a Vodafone spokesperson, speaking to News.com.au in an interview published on Friday. The iPad forced the store to evacuate customers. No one was injured, according to the spokesperson.

According to News.com.au, after fire fighters entered the building, they discovered that sparks were coming from the iPad's charging port.

It's not clear what version of the iPad burst into flames.

And it wasn't even driving over dangerous, terrorist, evil pebbels when it burst into flames. A clip of the above under controlled circumstances suggests the combustible situation got hot to quite hot.

Of course, nothing would surprise us as we await the press release explaining that "this is in fact 'a feature', not a 'bug' that is designed to enable users to more easily make the decision to upgrade the new iPad Air."

You don't want this to happen in the confined space of a flying vehicle.

Especially if initiated remotely via www.  You'll be doing more than "surfing" in the Unfriendly Skies or joining the Mile High Club.

Sorry to steal the thread, but I cannot resist poking all of you 3D printing Luddites out there. Oh Nooes, it's only plastic! Oh Nooes, you cannot print curves! Oh Nooes, you cannot do complex parts!

Nevertheless, there is a lot unsaid in this video. Incredible effort in 3D modelling effort and post-printing metal finishing.

I find the technology very interesting, but frankly this is never ever going to work for what you want it to unless you can find a way to print a rifled barrel with a chamber that can withstand 62,000 PSI.  Not gonna work with plastic - ever.

..in case you did not grock it..

they did metal deposition and unless we are being totally scammed, there is a process that emulates or requires tempering in the construction.

I leave this to more expert types to explain..

The process for 3D printing of metal involves laser sintering, and the machine costs the better part of a million dollars today, but the technology exists, is otherwise just like 3D printing with plastics, and will continue to develop in application.

For the purposes of this discussion, it is also possible to simply print 3D wax objects (using an open source design available on the internet) for use in simple lost wax manufacturing techniques that achieve the same result just by adding one more step - a complex metal object like a firearm made by literally anyone.

"they did metal deposition and unless we are being totally scammed, there is a process that emulates or requires tempering in the construction."

Its metal Laser sinter process which is extremely weak materal, and the process isn't cheap. It would be cheaper to buy a CNC mill and just machine the parts. You can buy 80% completed recievers that can be finsihed off using low end hobby mills (and perhaps with a drill press). In my opinion the whole 3D printing of firearms is a farse and is likely grab enough attention so that Feds and States enact regulations affecting the purchase of 3D machines, or worse.

FWIW: Laser sintering, uses stainless steal powder that is sinster (heat fused) with a laser. then that sinter parts are placed in a mold, and heated with bronze so that bronze is absorbed into the sintered part to make it stronger. A quick search on YouTube should turn up videos about the process. But these printed are significantly less stronger than using machined part using forged steel.

Except that they did it with metal. The technology exists for printing steel. Of course you can't get a plastic gun to handle the pressures required for repeated firing...but you can apparently make mags out of it pretty well.

Cast metal is a lot weaker than machined parts from forged metal. You really want a firearm machined, not cast or 3D printed. The only part a person really needs is the reciever or frame. You can puchase 80% machined receivers that can be finished using a small hobby mill or perhaps a drill press.

Cool, point taken.  But there are LOTS of things in life you can do.

It doesn't mean you should actually do them.  Most ppl sadly do not know the difference between Knowledge and Wisdom.

In this case, I might choose a hybrid solution:  Use the 3D printer for most parts (the non-critical parts), and use machined parts for the critical parts (Barrel, etc).  Machine shop time and skills can be had all over the country, in tons of places and affordable rates.

And, from the legal perspective, it is 100% legal to make a firearm for personal use.  You don't even have to put on and ID or SN.  But, as a "responsible citizen", just make sure it is kept safe (in your home/gun-safe), so it does not "fall into wrong hands".

"And, from the legal perspective, it is 100% legal to make a firearm for personal use. You don't even have to put on and ID or SN"

Not true and fucking irresponsible to say that. Believe this guy and be ready to meet your new cell mate for 10 yrs in a federal pound me in the ass prison...turning big rocks into little rocks.
Ridiculous statement. You'd need a manufacture type 7 FFL to make one
("personal" or not)and an SOT to sell it, even for personal use...and you'd need a SN logged.
That's like saying you could make your own suppressor legally, as long as it's for personal use.
Do it, take it to the range...and get your ass locked up.
Seriously folks. You'll do time.

Lithium is actually the most tame in the series as far as oxydation. Li<Na<K

But we're not talking about just Lithium here - http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg4/cg432/docs/msds/MSDS_LiIon.pdf

Having the solvents here means they system has accelerants.  One of them listed on the MSDS above is a component in nail polish remover. In all, this is a very volaile mix should something overheat. You have the expansion of the gasses when the solvents boil which leads to a combustible air mixture when the battery pack is breached. This is actually two explosions then - overpressure followed by chemical (a small fuel-air bom, if you will) burning. The presence of carbon, most like graphite, is another fuel source.

I suspect that Apple has gone to a less expensive supplier of the batteries. If there are any anisotropies in the anove or cathode, or even at the interface, you get a very fast, hot reaction. It then becomes a chain reaction.

The Cobalt used in the battery cited in the attached MSDS is replaced by Nickel when they make up car batteries. The same situations apply, however, although I am not sure the car batteries use the same solvent systems.

I'm not sure what you mean by "tame" but lithium oxide has a greater free energy of formation than any of the other alkali metals. You get more heat out of burning a given quantity of lithium than you would from sodium, potassium, etc. Lithium's standard electrochemical oxidation potential is also greater, which is the main reason it is used in batteries. Low density is a secondary benefit. In practice, many very reactive metals are stable due to the protective oxide film that they develop on exposure to air. Alkali metals do not form such a protective film and that is why you can observe the pyrotechnics of sodium or lithium being dropped into water in a high school science class. The oxidation by water produces heat and free hydrogen. The hydrogen then burns. The oxidation of titanium will produce more heat than sodium but less than lithium. Titanium is harder to ignite, but can be done if you do not know what you are doing. Years ago I was turning a 2" round of titanium on a lathe and developed a continuous chip (bird's nest) that burst into flame. In my ignorance I was rapidly creating a considerable surface area of unoxidized titanium in a small volume that became hot enough to sustain combustion.

Yet more anti-America propaganda from Zerobrains. How many people were injured from the Tesla fires (0 as far as I know)? Did the fires affect the cabins at all (no)? Did the car immediately alert the driver of a problem and get them to pull over off the road and exit safely (yes)? How many gasoline powered cars catch on fire per year (194,000)? Does each one of those make headline news? How many regular carsa re there in America (250,000,000)? How many electric cars have caught fire (2 or 3)? How many electric cars are there in America (over 100,000)?

Tha means that the fire rate for electric cars in America is 3/100,000 = 0.003%. The fire rate for gasoline powered cars is 200,000/250,000,000 = 0.08%, or in other words, TWENTY FIVE TIMES HIGHER THAN FOR ELECTRIC CARS.

Come on Hedgetards, grow some brains.
