Whopping 932,000 Americans Drop Out Of Labor Force In October; Participation Rate Drops To Fresh 35 Year Low

Tyler Durden's picture

The only two charts that matter from today's distroted nonfarm payrolls report.

First, the labor force participation rate, which plunged from 63.2% to 62.8% - the lowest since 1978!

But more importantly, the number of people not in the labor force exploded by nearly 1 million, or 932,000 to be exact, in just the month of October, to a record 91.5 million Americans! This was the third highest monthly increase in people falling out of the labor force in US history.

At this pace the people out of the labor force will surpass the working Americans in about 4 years.

The analysis is faulty. Number one Qe is forever, it's not going away, and number two the fed will never sell the bonds they bought back into the market. The lack of buyers would send rates through the roof. The best the fed can hope to do is to let them run off.

Yes, let the bonds mature or run off as you say. In the meantime, government is reducing the need for debt or the thing doesn't work out as the Fed likes. Qe for a long time and debt reduction until the country is dry as a bone.

Another "copy and paste" spammer fuck.  Here, I can copy and paste too moron.

Deflation is a fucking myth as no society/currency has ever collapsed/died because their purchasing power was too strong.

With 7+ billion people (and growing) competing for a better quality of life, there is plenty of demand (and growing) for all kinds of real assets, commodities, and energy.  "Dangerously falling inflation in the euro zone"  - LMFAO!!!!  What's the cost of living in most EZ countries again?  Fucking morons.

Exactly. Deflation is a great thing. Your money buys more stuff. It is a natural consequence of technological progress. How is that bad for the average Joe? But for the system that hands out free money to the people at the top it is devastating. If money wasn't printed and handed out to prop everything up, defaults would hit the system. Credit goes poof and leveraged shit annihilates the Duke brothers. We can't have that. Oh, no, that would be the end of the world.

But the Other People's Income Participation Rate is at an all time high!

Gotta love this math: A big boost in jobs (204k), for a smaller amount of job seekers (LPR 25 yr. low), but the “Unemployment Rate” is up.

So, how about somebody explain to me why for the 2nd time on ZH, directly after I post something (in all it's glorious "humor", haha) does my post get locked out from me being able to edit it?  Has anyone else had this happen?  At first there's an edit button, but when I clicked it I get an "Access Denied" page.  Then when I refresh and go back to my post the edit button has been removed.  Gee, it's like someone is not only locking me out from ADDING to my post, but also locking in my post so that I can't erase it....ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhh...like I would want erase it anyway! LOL

Is ZH teamed up with the Nazi hit squads in case any of us offend our Marxist overlords?  Will black helicopters and a SWAT team be visiting me sometime soon?  so scary....

Edit: But for some reason I can edit this post freely while I still can't edit my first post.  Be careful all you "up" arrow voters to my first post...you're Up vote is being tracked and the hit squads will be tracking you down soon as well! ;-)

Edit-Edit:  Question to the Tylers...so what gives, ay?  Do you have "flagged" words that automatically lock out a post so that we can be reported to the hit squads?  Do tell...I'm intrigued :-)  Maybe this whole site is run by the CIA and NSA?

ah, ok...I did not know that!  Thank you!

Darn...I thought I stumbled onto a conspiracy and was about to get SWAT teamed at my desk at work, LOL.  Still probabaly will though, right? haha

That reminds me though...Conspiracy Theorists are also terrorists too, even when you're proven correct and the government lies about it and you get demonized by the "news" demons for being right about pointing out that the government lies, well, you're still just a crack-pot conspiracy theorist.

So I'll just say that the employment numbers are conspiracy by the government to manipulate the markets and lie about the truely HORRIBLE employment numbers and that they will be revised down next month just like they are every month even though the government lies about it and the media purposely fails to report it.

It's all just a conspiracy theory though right?  So I must be crazy to think we have an unemployment problem that the government lies about while they continue to pay out record welfare and food stamps, deindustrialize our manufacturing base and send all jobs to China or Mexico.

Don't forget they lied about the moon landing too.

http://davesweb.cnchost.com/Apollo1.html

http://nasascam.atspace.co.uk/

FACT: In 1998, after looking at the NASASCAM webpage, world celebrity Uri Geller said that NASA's Apollo Moon pictures have been crudely faked, and asks WHY? Uri however, is friendly with Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, so we may ask WHY does he not ask Mitchell himself why the pictures were faked?

FACT: President Lyndon Johnson made certain Apollo files classified, with a declassification date of 2026. This is so those involved in the Apollo scam would be long dead and gone, and no one alive to blame. One need not wait 13 years for the truth behind Apollo, as the truth is already well known.

FACT: In the early 60s NASA/CIA officials, realizing that a manned Moon landing was totally impossible before 1970, met in secret behind closed doors. It was at that meeting they agreed upon a decision to fake Apollo 11, in the hope they would get to the Moon later on, and then substitute the earlier faked pictures with genuine Moon pictures. The reality is they never succeeded with any mission.

FACT: Arthur C. Clarke referred to Apollo 11 as a "Hole in History". Historian A.J.P. Taylor referred to it as "The biggest nonevent of his lifetime".

FACT: NASA had not perfected the lunar landing craft in time for Apollo 11. In 2013 they are still trying to get a rocket to land and take off again, over 44 years after Apollo was supposed to have done just that.

FACT: Film footage taken inside the capsule of ALL Apollo missions, shows a light blue haze, and curvature of Earth through capsule window, when they were supposedly half way to the Moon, and in the blackness of space. This proves that capsule was only in Earth orbit.

FACT: Moon pictures on NASA's web sites are fake, with backdrop scenes pasted. The pictures reveal a black line penciled in where background meets daylight sky, which was blacked out completely.

Hard to think of anything.  But I know where they are all going :-)

5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Its a parallel world : France has its nuts kicked like a football in a World Cup elimination contest by the bad economic numbers and the S&P junk down to 2A rating and USA has its nuts kicked by the jobs report.

Nut crackers suite being played in Paris and DC; all the while Secretary John john Kerry sings "sweet nothings" to Bibi on Iran handshake deal that MAY be in the cards in Geneva, for a nuclear stand-off 10 year freeze; by the big 6 and Ayatollah Teheran's plutonium jelly beans soup concocters.

You can hear Bibi bitching all the way to Syria and the Caucasus node of Mount Ararat, seat of Noah's ark, where even the mountain goats, like intelligent sheeple, can smell a rat in Arafat's polonium corpse.

"WHO DID DAT?" is the bleat that echoes in those dizzy heights the sounds of God's laughter, rippling like disdain  of Oligarchs for advice unheeded by men gone mad on hubris. "I'll have my eggs sunny side up in Jerusalem" sings the stealthy Hezbollah herdsman fed on Kurd goatsmilk curd in his hideout.  Kumis they called it of old  when the Mongols made it from mare's milk.

it's not relevant with the participation rate is the only thing that's relevant is that they can mislead the People into thinking that there's a recovery when their projections are so ridiculously low when a number like 205,000 comes out it looks good when in fact it's a disgrace. The Federal Reserve and Barack Obama have destroyed American economy and the people are so stupid they just don't see these liars for who they are. the recent numbers that have come out our complete fraud and a farce the gross domestic product is not growing in America in fact its contracting the labor markets are not improving in America in fact you're getting worse but they did this to prop to the dead dollar up and to not go down as an alternative to the junk bondsthat they're trying to sell abroad. it seems to me that the only economy we have is one of deception and misinformation and that will never with stand  time.

The government and the Fed are the enablers simply providing the fuel. We are ones burning it to the ground. We make choices that benefit our short term interests (that coincidentally benefit the enablers) while ignoring our future and especially that of our progeny. We could all stop this tomorrow...but we won't. We rationalize that becasue everyone else is participating in the corruption we would be a fool to not as well. So keep BTFD and all the rest, trying to front run the end of times, to which TPTB are fully aware and deliberately herding us towards. No one wins in a competition like this. Simply participating ensures we all lose. We could all just stop. Yes, it would be painful for sure, but I assure you, none of us here will be winners in the end if we don't.

Not to throw rain on any of the conspiracy theorists and/or Chicken Littles, but the US did have its highest annual birthrates since the agrarian revolution from 1946-1950. Many of those people are now at, or just reaching, retirement age. Is it any surprise that huge numbers of people are retiring and leaving the labour force? I wouldn't be surprised if many of them are 62-65 and thinking "Geez, there won't be ANY pension funds left in 3-5 years; I should retire now and get some before it's all gone. I think all the furloughed workers would have counted as leaving the labor force right?  In the household survey they would be coutned as unemployed and not searching for work.  So next month expect to see a reversal.

The problem is, is working for the government really "work"? Or is it just conspiring to defraud the taxpayers? Let's try getting rid of the government and see how that works.

I'm with ya there hangem.  It's a joke.  They definitely shouldn't be allowed to unionize.  I mean where on earth can you have an organization lose money every year and yet see its workers go on strike regularly for more money?  Where the leadership of the organization usually will cave in and give it to them?  I'll tell ya, every damn government in the western world.  I'd hang em all if I could.

and then there is this gem-

The falling participation rate — which comes from the BLS's household survey — has helped bring the unemployment rate — which also comes from the household survey — fall during the economic recovery.

For now, the drop in the the LFPR should be seen as a temporary symptom of the shutdown and not a major shift in the labor market.  Capital Economics' Paul Ashworth explains:

Apparently, the near three-week Federal government shutdown had little, if any, impact on payrolls. Manufacturing increased by a healthy 19,000, construction increased by 11,000 and retail increased by 44,000. Federal employment fell by a modest 12,000, because those workers affected by the shutdown received their back pay when they returned, which means they were counted as employed in the establishment survey.

In contrast, the alternative household survey defines employment slightly differently and, as a result, those Federal workers were not counted as employed or in the labour force. That explains the 720,000 drop in the labour force and the 735,000 decline in the household survey measure of employment. As a result, the unemployment rate ticked up to 7.3%, from 7.2%, and the participation rate plummeted to 62.8%, from 63.2%. With those Federal employees back at work now, however, all of this will be reversed in November's report.

Now, if these numbers don't reverse, then we'll actually have something to talk about.

For some reason, perhaps the same reason that causes people to stare at a train wreck, I decided to watch some TV this morning.  In between commercials I found out that there is a show called "Good Morning America".  Who knew?  I thought television was just one big advertisement for Bank of America.

Those of you who know me understand that I am a bit provincial in my ways and that I do not trust much of anything except gold, silver and guns.  On this "Good Morning America" program I learned something new.  I learned that there is such a thing as a "relationship coach" and that you can get paid to do this sort of work.  I thought I was watching a funny but decided to check it out and found that it is all too real

After my laughing fit subsided, I decided to broach the subject with Mrs. M because I think that she is a "relationship coach" with some of her friends who complain about their husbands all day long.  I suggested that she start invoicing for this service of lending an ear to complaining women.  Mrs. M has to put up with me so she has some level of temerity and brought up an interesting factoid.

"There is no such thing as an ugly woman if there is no shortage of vodka."

How do you even reply to a statement that is as concise as that one is?

Well, I have a reputation to uphold so I went into my office and retrieved the pair of panties she left lying on the floor last night and presented them to her.

Does this make me a "relationship coach" and could it help the employment numbers so that gold stops tanking?

Let me get this straight, more the people stop looking for jobs, the lower is the unemployment rate.

So all we have to do is wait till no one is looking for a job because no jobs are available, then according to the current method of calculation we will have full employment. The fact that participation labor rate will go through the floor will have no consequences whatsoever on the economy.

Politicians are best at barking crap. Economic calculations and interpretations are not exactly their strong points.

The true extent of slowdown in the world economy can be judged by the data points which are not subjected to adjustments by the government. Eg. Change in Electricity and Fuel consumption, Ratio of working population to the total population of a country, Miles driven, Baltic Dry Index, Change in commercial Rental Rates etc

Oh, come on!  Household survey was massively distorted by the effects of the government shutdown.  Differing methodology than the establishment (i.e., payroll) survey. These moves will be retraced in coming reports (maybe all at once in November). You lose credibility when just mindlessly bang the drum about anything negative, regardless of any special factors that may be at work. Of course, you waste no time citing special factors when something positive is reported......

Want to see the full set of facts?

Author: Create and post the complete charts.

What I mean is, do not display percentages of those you consider eligible for work, but percentages of everyone.  In other words, include old people (many who want to work, but cannot find jobs), plus young folks you consider too young to work, plus youngish folks you do not count because they are in college.

And if you really want to be honest, also consider everyone who works for every government to be unemployed, and everyone who works for private contractors supporting government programs.

In other words, let's see a chart of how many individuals (and what percentage of the entire population) are actually doing nominally/potentially productive work.  I do believe most people would be stunned to learn how tiny that number is.

Of course, displaying charts that show how few individuals are actually doing productive work might lead to a strike of productive workers.  If they only knew how few of them are supporting everyone else, who knows - maybe they'd just say no.

Incidentally, you can be sure that a huge number of doctors and medical workers will go on strike in the last quarter of this year and the first quarter of next year (and beyond).  And you can be sure that a huge number of regular folks will stop working in order to avoid the requirement to purchase health care.

Look out below!
