Guest Post: Obamacare - Blinding You With Science
Submitted by Jeffrey Tucker via the Laissez Faire Club blog,
It is such a kick to read the transcripts from the White House’s health care “war room” in the first days of release. What a meltdown, and you get to watch it all in real-time.
I’m not trying to be cruel to the kindly despots who have wrecked so much of what worked in the existing system, only to replace it with an unworkable central plan that’s robbing people all over the country.
But still, there is justice in this humiliation.
Somehow, the Republicans forced the Obama administration to cough up the details, and it is from these transcripts that we discovered the truth about HealthCare.gov’s mysterious first day. Only six people enrolled. That’s six of 7 million people eligible for the great new dawn for “affordable” health care.
It’s no wonder the Obama administration tried to hide the numbers from you. But in a digital age, even the White House can’t keep this stuff secret anymore. Every aspect of reality is logged in real-time.
It’s a double-edged sword. True enough, they are still logging our lives, which is tremendously annoying. But at the same time, they are also logging their own failures. In real-time, nonetheless. And this provides unprecedented insight into many great disasters of our time.
Here is a screenshot I pulled from one such transcript:
If you’re critical of the government, this is a beautiful failure.
Supporters of the president and the health care law in his name see this as a small hiccup. To be sure, people say that all of these problems will be fixed. That the problems with creating an account are mere technical issues. Top technicians from the best companies have all been hired by the government to make it right.
In other words, it’s only a matter of time. Maybe.
But there is a more substantive issue here. The real question is how an epic failure on this scale could have happened in the first place. The Affordable Care Act is the fulfillment of decades of planning on the part of policy professionals. They had a half billion dollars to work with. The so-called “smartest guys in the room” had every incentive to make this rollout work.
So why was it such a mess? This is where things become interesting. Government doesn’t have customers that it serves. It has only subjects that obey. It has no profit and loss statements. It is not limited in its operations by the demand that it behave rationally like other businesses. It can spend what it wants based on political priorities. It has neither the incentive nor the means to anticipate changes in the system or to deal with the uncertainties of the future.
For all these reasons, it really doesn’t matter whether the website is fixed or not. The website is a metaphor for a program that cannot work. If it is fixed, it will be frozen in time, unable to adapt to change, much less improve as technology improves.
The harshest critics are exactly right. The government-backed American health care system will become ever more like the automobiles in Cuba, a living monument to what once was.
Just this weekend, I heard a fascinating lecture by professor Alexei Marcoux of Loyola University in Chicago. He provided some real insight into the mindset that led to the creation of this program. Architects of the ACA expected that a government-made system would work better than the market could work.
It all began about 100 years ago. The government’s first intervention in the medical industry created a regulatory agency for medical schools. And after that, all bets were off. Government was in charge, using “science” to improve the world you live in. The actual effect — and probably the real intent — was to limit the number of people who could call themselves physicians. This, in turn, drove up the price for their services.
How is it that society went hundreds of years without any government intervention in the medical marketplace and then it suddenly came upon us with very little public objection or even awareness?
Professor Marcoux explained in his lecture how the late 19th century saw a tremendous explosion in scientific knowledge in every area. It came with rising prosperity, increased funding for research, and new creativity inspired by commercial ambitions.
It was a natural and normal assumption that every other field of study could benefit from the application of scientific methods and insights. So, therefore, why not the management of human affairs through government? Notice that at the same time we got the beginnings of medical intervention, we also got the income tax (manage wealth!), the Fed (manage money!), antitrust policy (only government knows how big or small business must be), the origins of the welfare state, spreading intervention in education and labor, and so much else.
The pushers of Obamacare had years to plan. Everything looked right on paper. No expense was spared. There were thousands of meetings, a foolproof plan, mountains of numbers to back it all up. Then finally you press the button. The whole thing explodes — and not just the website. The risk pools will not lower premiums. The mandates will not cause people to experience health-insurance bliss. The price controls will not control costs. The new tools for access will not lead to greater access.
Science is glorious. But government is not science, and society cannot be managed scientifically from the center. Ludwig von Mises had a phrase he used to describe every attempt: “planned chaos.” There is a plan, and the experts are in charge with all resources and conviction. But the results are crazy, random, irrational, confusing, and chaotic.
It would be the greatest legacy of the Affordable Care Act if the government finally understands this message. Then we could get back to the old liberal conviction that individuals always and everywhere do a better job in managing their lives. Better than the government, anyway.

Try telling that to my pH Dee brother who has a degree from an accredited Ivy League university.
If anyone knows a reporter who wants to make his name on a potential blockbuster regarding this topic, have them email me at icanhasbailout@gmail.com
If you need a tease check out the comment someone dropped on my article here: http://thebullelephant.com/it-cant-be-fixed/
I have a LOT more than that and I need someone experienced to help me get the info out properly.
Truth or Propaganda?
Just another political hack or an honest American?
James Carville:
“I think we can stop putting the nails in the coffin here. We can admit that there’s some real, deep, fundamental problems with this president. But I think we’re throwing the dirt here too soon,” Carville said. “The deficit is dropping as a percentage of GDP faster than any time since World War II. He saved the auto industry. Health care costs are flattening better than any time in the last 20 years. Teenage pregnancy is at an all-time low.”
Carville said he doesn’t blame Obama for the problems in Washington, pointing in part to Republicans who have moved far to the right in recent years.
“Obama’s problem, I think, is he’s a man in politics that doesn’t like politics,” Carville said.
James Carville to President Obama: Try crack pipe
http://www.politico.com/story/2013/11/james-carville-president-obama-poll-numbers-99658.html
Carville is a spin meister. I will agree with one thing, and not for the reason he espouses; MaoBama doesn't like politics. Politics is the art of compromise, which he's never been interested in or willing to do. He's a dictator in training, willing to executive order his way into our lives.
Another thing....the Rs have moved right???? Today's R is a D from 30 years ago. But, thanks for playing James.
It's just good to know that we have so many ivy league academics and politicians with tenure and assured government pensions to guide the whole freaking society through the mess they have created.
All it takes is another DC fundraiser and cocktail party to solve the all the problems.
Oh.. btw...can anybody recollect how many freaking hundreds of million people have been killed over the last 100 years because of enlightened academics and politicians?
I was being sarcastic regarding my pH Dee brother.. yes he does exist but he is a die-hard statist... obviously. How else would universities be able to continually provide stipends to their pH Dees if it wasn't for government?
understood.. 5x5
,,but do you think there a possibility that the "all-knowing' will ever come to grips with the limitations of their phenomenal intellect?
There are a few PhDs that do things well and do so with Big Brother at arms' length. I am at a private institution, and we get a few dollars from Uncle Sugar, but they would be turned down if we were asked to compromise our academic freedom. And I always tell every one of my students that I don't trust anyone who has the title "Doctor," and that they shouldn't either. To wit, I just got a nasty email from an exec at IMF about a paper that was published three weeks ago. He insisted on sending it to ten of the top people in the area, and many of their emails end @someivyleagueschool.edu
Poor little numbnuts dumb ass me can't possibly have a point because I chose not to hang out with those people at Ivy Schools. Although some of my degrees are from US schools, I chose to go to much older institutions for other degrees. And it is amazing that some Europeans actually know stuff. (You really ought to study econ in Germany, Austria, or Hungary, for instance.) I do stats, but I also understand a little of the econ and finance side. And I don't mind that someone like Krugman would look down at me. I have my opinions on Paulie, and some could be found right here on ZH if you just tried a little. So the feeling is mutual.
In the end those of us who are much wiser should take over for those who declared themselves "smarter." I only know things because I watched my grandfathers succeed by their hard work. It could work for us too, if we turn the tide. I'm out cutting my own fire wood, working on my own tractor, feeding my own beef cattle. Is it because I can't afford anything else, or is it because I appreciate things more from my own labor? Well, whichever...and who gives a damn what the Ivy eggheads think on that?
So, let them pick apart my pieces. And when I send back responses, links to lectures I have given, other papers I have written, there is this deafening silence. They all suppose that we won't answer them, won't have the fortitude to stand up and tell the truth. Don't be afraid. Don't back down. Keep on telling your elected reps that they need to listen to you. Better yet, run for office. I'll vote for the thinking people. Sure, I "wasted my vote" on Ron Paul and then on Gary Johnson. At least I didn't waste it on one of the two Republocrat twins, one of which is now our supreme ruler and doing sumb stuff like ACA. We have to stand up. We either hang together or...
I don't have much of a CV and my recollection of romance language is a little failing, but I might suggest..

Some say big gov best serves people. Others say uninhibited corporations do better. Complexity Theory is great because it shows neither actually works. CT says that as things become larger and more complex, they become more efficient, but also more fragile and prone to breakdown.
Economics: The study of why no matter what you do, nothing works.
My wife and I associate with many academics on the cocktail / charity circuit (interesting conversations except things that have do with common sense). What I keep pounding in is the overwhelming evidence that State programs have been colossal failures. They are universally mismanaged, inefficient, under budgeted, unable to adjust and bankrupt. Name it - education, SS, health care, housing, technology investments - all utter fiascos.
With this track record why in the world would anyone want this crew running health care? (The answer, "Well, it's better than the corporate version FORCED on us." Note that business "forces" you to take part unlike the nice State.
"nice" ... interesting concept.
it's nice to f with mother nature...\

They are fiascos for YOU and I. What about for whom they actually serve? Corporate power. Governments. Its employees (sometimes). For them, it's a bonanza.
"With this track record why in the world would anyone want this crew running health care? (The answer, "Well, it's better than the corporate version FORCED on us." Note that business "forces" you to take part unlike the nice State."
I'd argue it is one in the same. Obamacare's purpose is to sustain and grow profits for corporate power, profits which are stagnating due to financial limitations of the people who are largely tapped out. That's the theory anyway, because it does absolutely nothing to solve this:

Businesses, unlike The State, have not enjoyed the advantges that come with educating the masses. The Legend of State benevolence grows, despite the overwhelming, and violent evidence to the contrary.

There, fixed that for you.

"Health care costs are flattening better than any time in the last 20 years."
The average premium increase gradually dropped from 14% in 2002 to 3% in 2009. After ACA passed it started to increase again. Conservatively, ACA accounts for 1-3% of the now-increasing increases:

Based on this, Carville is lying out his ass.
That's his job.
I would expect a political operative of one political party to minimize whatever problems exist and blame the other party for it. That is Carville's job description.
ican,
Your link proves to call Obamacare a failure is a vast understatement. Nothing could be possibly released as a viable product even by the feckless government. If anything, I am now convinced this to be orchestrated.
I think when Hitlery becomes supreme ruler she will be perfectly positioned to resurrect Clintoncare as an attractive alternative. That bill,at the time, was considered a complex proposal running more than 1,000 pages. The core element of which was an enforced mandate for employers to provide health insurance coverage to all of their employees through competitive but closely regulated health maintenance organizations. Remember that was her baby. Turned over to her when she held no office nor qualification. She doesn't strike me as a person who takes snubbing well.
Miffed;-)
Hello Miffed, good to see you. It seems to me that Hillary running as the democrat candidate is considered a sure thing, or at least universally recognized as the most viable option. Do you believe she will be the candidate? I haven't heard any formal announcements nor statement of intentions but of course at this stage that might not mean anything.
I was not living in the US at the time that Hillary was given the responsibility of running a health care campaign. However, I do remember she was ridiculed and perhaps this is her getting her own back. If this is so, I don't see how Hillary could possibly make anything worse as far as a health care delivery system goes. Its possible, but as it is we are starting at ground zero already.
Hi RS! I really think she is well positioned for the nomination. Though certainly not a blissful marital couple, I do believe she and Bill work together as a political machine. I recall Bill was claimed to have stated "A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee." referring to Obama. Much ado was made of this because of perceived racial tone. I don't think that it was meant as a racial slur but as a claim to the political supremacy of the Clintons vs the newbie, inexperienced upstart Obama. I think she is seriously contemplating running because the disaster of Obamacare will play well into her hand. Anyone contemplating being president today could be deemed crazy IMHO. However, for psychopaths this is just another step for power. Also the fact women will probably vote for her in droves could be another inducement. Interesting to watch from the sidelines.
Miffed;-)
heh.. heh cool..
Ich bin ein berliner-hitlerty.. :-)
Obamacare was orchestrated to fail. It will destroy private insurance markets and when people demand that Congress do something, it will bring single payer. All according to plan.
Simple just tell your bother he can come over when you get the door modified to allow passage of his head through the door way, this will be common place when ACA is up/running and the number of individuals signed up has reached 200 million!
morgan freeman should have played chancy gardener. would have been a heads up
Morgan Freeman needs to keep his dick out of his nubile young stepdaughter.
gee.. another talking head token, or ..
another black god?
he does read good though.. i've seen the science programs.
My favorites are the spoofs of him "calling" in to the Bob and Tom radio show. Their Morgan Freeman correlates whatever headline news item du jour is happening that day back to the time he spent in Shawshank Prison. And the 3 sisters.
And his good friend, Andy Dufrense.
Oooohhh Aaaaandy. It was the LONGEST night!
Oddly enough, eCONomics is not science either...
hedge accordingly.
So why was it such a mess?
It can spend what it wants based on political priorities. It has neither the incentive nor the means to anticipate changes in the system or to deal with the uncertainties of the future.
so they were blinded by the blight...?
Quoting the same song now "...and little early burly gave my anus curly whirley, and asked me if I needed a riiiiiiiiide"
It is now evident that Obamacare was intentionally designed to crash the system, just like everything else our antiAmerican president has done/not done.
Coercion is the least efficient most expensive way to achieve anything. And that's what we will end up with when the government is done fixing the healthcare crisis.
Destroying full time employment on a massive scale must feel pretty coercive to the tens of millions crushed already in 2013. That was the change. The hope hits in 2014.
.
Destroying full time employment on a massive scale must feel pretty coercive to the tens of millions crushed already in 2013. That was the change. The hope hits in 2014.
I was working under the assumption that the ACA was one small step towards single payer, hell, bomba & slick willy have come out and plainly said that it is, but now it's turning into. A giant leap.
They're gonna break it so bad that single payer will be the only option left. The trick will be surviving the collapse of the current insurance-medical complex, currently around 20% of US GDP, the 5th largest complex in the world.
Bomba s gonna go for it. He's gonna punch it over the cliff!
I disagree. I think the Obamites are crying in their beer because they realize that for the time being, this fiasco is a wet blanket on any idea to turn over the entire industry to the architects of this mess. Yes, I've talked to some who think Obamacare is still fantastic (although it is inoperable) but most folks with at least one atom of sense will have a negative take on a complete gov't takeover.
"Science is glorious."
Science has been just as corrupted as politics and academia. Eisenhower, in the same speech in which he warned about the MIC, also warned about the relationship between research and government funding. He was right.
Are you saying that there are no private entities doing research? FAIL.
Yes there are. I was happy to have worked for one. It was founded by an eminent Salk researcher who became disillusioned bowing obsequiously to government demands what to research to receive funds. Receiving government and corporate funded grants taints science. Too much conflict of interest.
Miffed;-)
+55
Thanks, miffed.
Don't be too hard on laws, he has been "blinded by science".
Everything humans touch is "tainted". But I digress, perhaps you want people to do research for free?
Good luck with that cognitive disonance.
Humans by their nature cannot keep their biases completely out of scientific analysis. This is true. I argue it is unwise to add the pressures of desired outcomes by corporate and government grants. Of course money is required. My BioRad HPLC instrument and glassware were not donated. However, I don't see it likely Bayer would fund our research if it proved the efficacy of their top revenue generating product was in question. In fact, it would be more likely they would spend millions in "research " to dispute our claims.
Miffed;-)
ARBEIT MACHT FREI! Work and welfare and taxes for the Gommint will make you free slaves.

Bwwaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahah, HAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.
Oh, man, that was a good one! Whew. Thanks!
+10 you beat me to it.......Jesus, this guy must be on Prozac. No government has EVER admitted to failure, the question is only, who will they lay the blame on.
Obama's Tyrannycare has now become Calamitycare! Unfortunately, the calamity has become OURS!
The point of the ACA was to enslave the populace to a government edict while simultaneously enriching insurance companies, big Pharma, and corporate hospitals.
Sure, there are neophytes who believe the B.S., but those at the top knew and know what this was and is; an asset confiscation scheme and serfdom mechanism of the fascist kleptoligarchy.
This is not health distribution, its wealth distribution.
The point of the ACA was a bail-in of medicaid, that rotting corpse of LBJ. First, however, they need to implode medicare. Then, kill private insurance. That's the path.
Then, once its all-in on medicaid, voila, you have single payer. Its like taking fucked up to the power of totally retarded fucked up.
ebworhten, you left out big pound-me-in-the-ass-prison.
I work in construction-related product sales in California and there are 4 types of projects that I am seeing:
1.) Healthcare - CHW and Kaiser building hospitals at breakneck speed. United Health Systems will break ground on its first of many mental-health facilities in January. These buildings will be 90% pre-cast and put together like erector sets on site, lowering the construction timeline by half. It makes one wonder why mental-care facilities are in such high demand. Is the definition of mentally ill going to be broadened? Like maybe if you are a bit too much of a 2nd Amendment enthusiast.
2.) Courthouses (which they are calling "family justice centers") in which you will be sentenced to #3
3.) Prisons
4.) Data centers - the wet dream of the NSA.
The 10-story office building, the strip mall with mom & pop shops, the local 14-screen cinema......all dead.
There was something in the news recently about all mental health care being required to be included in all health care plans.
Not sure if it was a Government proposal, or an executive order.
New World Order agenda = lock up as mentally ill everyone who owns a gun.

There are no no assets to confiscate, and people will not, cannot sign up for something they cannot pay for.EPIC FAIL,the IRS cannot collect a dime from anyone who does not enroll,(must be employed to force pmt)unless they are due a tax refund. If no one signs up, it must fail, and it will fail.
No one could be expected to fix in one term what George Bush left. He's evolving. It's just a g;itch and only affects a few people. God I love our President. Hillary in 2016!
+1 for the sarcasm, and I think you meant "Billary in 2016!".
Do they(Bill and Hillary) ever show up in the same zip code anymore? I'm thinking that when Hillary wins in 2016(and she will if there is an election) that Bill will seldom be seen in the House.
They probably skype on Thanksgiving once a year.
Chelsea happened like a miracle. A political accident of genitals, like two cars colliding. Billary needed a 'show child' to make their 'family' look legit. And so, sperm was donated from Hillary via test tube and mailed via Fed Ex right into Billy Jethro Heefus McWilly's fallopian tube.
George W is to George H as
Hillary is Bill
Can we please stop with ruling families acting as lords over our future.
No to Clinton 2016
No to Michelle O in 2020.
Geesh! are we really that big of morons?
Chelsea is illegit daughter of Webster Hubbell.

Who let you in here?
Of course its a metaphor for a program that cannot work. Its just another point of chaos being injected into a system that cannot be sustained without a veil of obfuscation. However much political reputations are being pinned to it, for the government it doesn't matter if it works or not. Expansion is its sole purpose.
ObamaCare reminds me of the hospital scene from Idiocracy.

Obtaining I.Q. and aptitude tests (Idiocracy, short scene)by aDoorIntoSummer 86,607 views ...
After researching our "education" system very thoroughly several years ago and learning that America has indeed been dumbed-down on purpose, and that the vast majority of Americans are in total ignorance of how stupid they really are because of their government school brainwashing; I say, I knew that this country will never get better because there are too few people who can even see the problems. Their children will be even dumber. That's when I started homeschooling, prepping, and buying gold and silver.
The sister of a German friend of mine visited New York City two years ago. She was in a shop to purchase a few items, and to her suprise had to help the store clerk make change for her in US currency. After laying out her dollars on the counter, the German visitor counted out the price in dollars and then proceeded to show the clerk what the change should be. She actually went around the counter and helped pick out the change in dollars and coins from the register. Her desire was to not embarass the clerk as much as possible as other customers were watching the transaction. That night she called her brother and told him that she had not encountered that problem since her last visit to Tanzania. Welcome to America!
Was the clerk in NYC "Tanzanian", too?
Not hatin', jus' sayin'.
That, and by chance was it her dog that got stolen and gang raped last week, in sunny 'ol Duescheland?
As to the first question, I have no idea. As to the second question, her family owns two Dobermans who are more than capable of not only protecting their family but also themselves. Only a person with a death wish would attempt it.
This is an art that is complete gone RS. I think it's because of computerized cash registers. I'm old enough to have only have used manual and was instructed to count the change back to the customers hand. My older daughter got a job selling concessions to the crowds during Sea World shows. She had to add up the purchases and make change in her head. Poor kid had a tough time for a while until we practised at home. One mastered, she preferred it to a modern register.
Miffed;-)
Good for your daughter, Miffed. Some people would run from a challenge like that. I agree with you. Computerized cash registers removes the need for the clerk to be familiar with their own currency. I also remember a few years ago that some cash registers that serviced a store with limited items replaced dollar values with pictures of the items so that it completely removed any need on the part of the clerk to be familiar with anything other than the picture. What an odd step for commerce to make.
This is so true! A further example of dumbing down America. My first job in fast food required us to memorize all the sandwiches and their prices. We had to type $1.25 into the register not push a picture. My boss wouldn't allow us to write down the order so if 5 people were on the same ticket you had to keep the order straight in your head. It was tough but I got to the point I rarely made a mistake. I could do 10 people on the same order but after that I would write it down especially if they kept changing it. It was funny to hear all the people say " aren't you going to write this down?" My boss owned the store and thought this would impress the customers and raise the caliber of the restaurant. Yes, as incredible as it seems, back then even in lowly fast food you were expected to look and act professional. Kids today would be shocked! ;-)
Miffed;-)
You're boss was right, Miffed. What you were able to do is impressive and as a customer I would remember it when considering the next time where I would eat. That kind of service does raise the caliber of the restaurant and I would bet you developed a stream of constant customers who wanted you to take their orders. People notice and remember service like that. It is becoming a rare thing in the US.
> I also remember a few years ago that some cash registers that serviced a store with limited items replaced dollar values with pictures of the items so that it completely removed any need on the part of the clerk to be familiar with anything other than the picture. What an odd step for commerce to make.
Not that strange a concept really: Most modern registers are part of the shop-wide network (even for your "Corner Shop" enterprise), and single keystroke entry is easier (and more reliable) than multi-entry "Product Look-Up" (PLU) codes which take some remembering, even for a restricted product line. PLU is the backbone of automated stock-flow management and today's fashion - "Just In Time" ordering, with most Wholesalers almost demanding electronic rather than manual (telephone or facsimile) ordering.
Nowadays even single-keystroke has gone the way of the Dodo - laser EAN or similar barcode scanning means the "Check-Out Chick" doesn't even have to recognise the product (and that applies to vegetables too - you'll notice the barcodes on the tiny fruit stickers these days - so no need to "guess the apple variety" - it's all in the barcode!).
Next evolutionary step - automated product identification via smart image recognition - http://www.gizmag.com/toshiba-object-recognition-scanner/21765/ so even the barcode may go the way of "old technology", along with checkout operators Globally!
And the next evolutionary step after that is the implantation of a RFID chip in us all for the ultimate tracking tool. Perhaps we'll be lucky and be able to choose which one of two anatomical sites, ass or brain? Just imagine the beauty of not having to swipe cards any more. Everything automatically charged to our accounts. Yep, can't see any problem there. We must learn to accept technological advances are being developed to improve our lives and make us more efficient.
Miffed;-)
Ah, for the good old days of hearing over the store PA system: "I need a price check on extra-large Trojan condoms on line two ... price check for extra-large Trojan condoms on line two."
Every mans dream. Funniest for us cashiers when AnAnonymous is standing before us.
Miffed;-)
In that case, you sure as Hell knew that you weren't going to need to get a price check on toilet tissue!
Make me laugh.
Silly boy. They're dual purpose. Whack off excess length and there is more than enough for multiple roadside uses. Of course that assumes the whacker knows the proper end to cut for best use of the product. Hmmm... This may explain a lot of things. My head is spinning with all the double entendres and bizarre images I've got going here.
Miffed;-)
On my last visit to NYC virtually no store clerks spoke English! And that after having to communicate with the cab driver in sign language.
at least you didn't have to communicate with the cab driver in braille.
I've run into this on several occasions over the past 15 years or so. In one case, a long line formed at the cafeteria checkout, because the girl running the cash register made a mistake and then couldn't do the simple subtraction required to make change, even with a pencil and paper. I was right behind the problem transaction, and when I told her how much change was owed she muttered about not being a math whiz. No indeedy. These kids can't tell time on an analog clock. They can't read or write in cursive anymore. It isn't even taught. They have no grounding on anything even remotely functional.
The goal was to separate the sheeple from their money by hook or crook. All is working just fine.
"I am never "critical" of the government, I just know what government is."
Notice that BC/BS is involved. I do not know the details but about 8 years ago that company went bad. They cut a lot of doctors and began to pander to Medicaid pools.
I believe the plan is to get these companies that no longer serve more affluent (ie normal) populations toput together groups specifically serve ACA patients.
We will see 'clinics run by nurse practitioners and PAs and they will provide all care. They will probably be employed by large HMO type operations and will be easily controlled by their employers. It will be very hard to see an actual MD or DO. Specialist will be even harder to see. Your PA will now be your 'gate-keeper' and if you get a bad one you will die before your appeals process is complete.
It won't be as bad as 'barefoot' doctors but these providers are usually trained as triage officers. They do not have the experience to know when they are looking at something that is not quite right and therefore in need of a specialist care. Here in Nevada they my now practice without any physician oversightt. they can open their own clinic. If it is a nurse with a PhD she will wear a badge that says "Dr.".
It is becoming crucial that patients educate themselves as to the real expertise of their providers. I suggest having a doctor in the family, one who is will ing to say 'BS' when that is the right thing to say.
Do nurses that have doctor of divinity (a modern form of witch doctor) degrees also get to use the "Dr." title on their badge?
Though I've have good experiences with PAs sometimes they really scare me shitless. I reported out Salmonella once on a PAs patient and he called me back livid that I hadn't run an antibiotic susceptibility automatically. I explained we don't do this routinely because treatment often results in a carrier state but I would do if he required it. I did the testing and reported it. He called me again absolutely pissed off. Why hadn't I included Tetracycline? I said I didn't run tetracycline because that drug would have no effect on Salmonella. " Well, I've been giving him Tetracycline for 4 days now and he has gotten better. So you are wrong!" He hung up on me so I didn't get the satisfaction telling him most people get over Salmonella on their own without any treatment unless they are immunocompromised. I think he views tetracycline as some miracle drug now. When I really want to tell a PA he is professionally out of his league I tell him to get a Infectious Disease Consult and pray hard the patient can afford it or has insurance.
Miffed;-)
Down Under ID Consults are "free at the point of use", unless the Patient's a Private one (when their Insurer picks up the tab anyhow!). Can't get Daptomycin here without special paperwork, so that's another problem for us.
Incidentally, I wonder where they got the name from. Dapto is a (fairly rough) suburb of the NSW Industrial City of Wollongong, and there was a standing joke there that the source organism Streptomyces roseosporus, was originally isolated there. If not, and the fashion is to use NSW suburbs for naming the latest antibiotics, if "the worst suburbs" are associated with the "strongest" agents, then "Fairymeadowmycin", and "Eastnowramycin" would certainly be the next "Magic Bullets" (in the same vein as "Sowetomycin" or "Johannesburgmycin"!!)
If the goverment was given a perfectly working software system they would have figured out to fuck it up. Now what we have is a government designed software system which can never work right. These morons are living proof of how ineffective a large government can be. Now we all get to suffer for it.
"It all began about 100 years ago. The government’s first intervention in the medical industry created a regulatory agency for medical schools."
James Corbet has a recent and interesting podcast on this:
http://www.corbettreport.com/episode-286-rockefeller-medicine/
That "first government intervention" was but one prong of a multi-prong attack on the American people who also received the manganious gifts of the income tax and the Fed in 1913.
the Fed arrived 12/23/1913 i'm betting on single-payer health -care 12/13/2013.
Obama lied, healthcare died!
Long story short, an army of technocrats designed a "market" designed to be a monopoly, single possible source of a hyperregulated product offering they call "insurance" but which isn't insurance, and isn't optional, but can't be purchased either. Unless you are special, like congress and lobbyist and unions and generous industries.
"How is it that society went hundreds of years without any government intervention in the medical marketplace and then it suddenly came upon us with very little public objection or even awareness?"
To be fair, "for hundreds of years" there wasn't much in the way of medicine, and there was even less in the way of a marketplace where one might access competent, effective care. Imagine today going to your barber (or "stylist") for help with that prolonged, intolerable pain in your abdomen.
"To be fair" is what Obamacare proponents' justification for this monstrosity, and much else they do, boils down to, in a nutshell. I prefer competition to these technocrats' tyrannical wet blanket of stupid.
To jump from what I said to anything resembling support for Obamacare, you'd have to have read rather carelessly.
All I said was that "for hundreds of years" there wasn't much medicine, and access to competent care didn't resemble much in the way of a "marketplace". Anyone who believes otherwise would be perfectly comfortable traveling back to the late 1800's for surgery, for example. There's your wet blanket of stupid - I suggest getting out from under it.
I read all of it and I'm a technologist and actually understood most of what they were doing and it just created more questions for me. We have a tug of war on my thoughts here with the balance of open source and commercial software. Whay in hell are they using JBoss and writing more code when WebLogic from Oracle has been around for years and is updated all the time, works in the cloud and can scale a heck of a lot better? If you are not in tech you won't get that one but overall the deal here is being smart and doing what you need to do whether it be open source, commercial and combinations to get the job and use code modules that the enterprise uses to where there's tons of libraries like WebLogic. JBoss is open source all the way but when you have tight time frames, look at it this was, are we going to go on the cheap and think we can write all this integration code in a short amont of time, or should we choose KeyLogic from Oracle pay a license fee, reduce code by about 60 o 75% that needs to be created from scratch and go foward? Duh...see what I mean and now they have on big mess.
In today's world of complexities you better stick with proven and long time integrated technologies, as if they were written to integrate, well guess what, they do and work better:)
This is the only fear I see coming out with Todd Park testifying in his area was the question of did folks not step all over their own egos of having "original" code written and not make a business decision here? Here's what I sad about the testimonies, let Park go and educate Issa here and the stupid is just that, stupid. He's not too busy to take few hours out as Issa pointed out it's the engineers doing the work hands on.
http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2013/11/more-healthcare-gov-testimonies-n...
We still have the 834 issues too...thank QSSI for using MarkLogic data base instead of Oracle there too, same idea as above and even the CEO, who came from Oracle to MarkLogis said you may not want to choose our application if your program is app heavy, which Healthcare. gov is. QSSI is using this same MarkLogic data base for the hub.
http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2013/11/fixing-hipaa-compliant-834-insura...
Now CMS has a Cray appliances that runs MarkLogic well and it's there to search and look for fraud patterns, not nearly as complex the Healthcare. gov site. I wrote it up and actually Cray linked to it.
http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2013/11/cray-computers-making-big-comebac...
Political connections are the most important factor in obtaining government contracts. Basic competence is waaaaaaay down the list.
...and is probably even a hindrance.
Being a transact SQL and Oracle guy, I wonder what numpty selected MarkLogic for their data tier? After reading the linked comments from above, it appears the entire framework for the UI is horribly dated and simply won't work in a high volume environment. It appears there were zero architects with real industry experience with high-volume sites on this project. This thing could not be more off the tracks if it tried.
Did they choose Banyan Vines for the transport client?
Now that was funny!
But I wouldn't rule it out.
maybe kenny banyan was their chief programmer.
The overwhelming mistake in discussing Obamacare currently is that people say "it was supposed to work" in the first place. I will posit that under no certain circumstances was it supposed to work. I believe the Cloward -Piven / Alinsky tactics and strategy are rolling along as planned. That the website was broken is not a glitch...it is a feature. That millions are under duress and fear for their healthcare solutions is a feature, not a bug. The classic Cloward-Piven agenda is that in order to truly reform any system, you must first destroy the existing system by overwhelming it. By sabatoge and destruction of the existing healthcare system can a new system be overwhelmingly implemented.
Obamacare breakdowns: Features, not glitches!
One does not have to be competent when one has a unrestricted license to steal at will 24x7x365. Incompetent, flawed, useless, etc. has NO bearing at all on the government's revenue stream...
Central planning rocks!
At my day job I cut people for a living. My gripe with this piece is the part regarding 100 years and no intervention. Absolute rubbish. Setting prices via Medicaid May very we'll be the worst idea ever. Followed by increasing third party payers and burdensome regulations that don't ever get less.
It sure is a great control mechanism though........
The "Health Insurnance Industry" wrote this law. It is not as if a couple of liberals in a basement somewhere tried to create socialist medicine for Americans. The entire health insurance mandate, and that IS all it IS, has no effect on health care delivery. That sits 100% in the hands of corporate America. Insurance for that delivery system is different, that has a strong government component. i.e. Medicare for elderly, Medicaid for the poor and Veteran's Care. These are insurance providers that negotiate with health care delivery systems. The people who work pay taxes their whole working lives to the government and at a certain age they can enroll.
Obama Care as it stands, is an attempt, modelled on Mr. Romeny's State Health Insurance System. I tried to enroll in my state on Minnesota just to test the system, I have private insurance paid by me and my employeer. Anyways, in five minutes I was ready to click enroll. I basically found the same plan on the exchange that I have now. So if a stste has created a real exchange, then time is minimal to enroll.
I really can see that the young uninsured are going to be reluctant to sign up, and may even face that minor tax penalties involved. As young adults, unless we have a condition, we don't want to pay for that insurance. We want it when we get older and when we get a family. We basically want to coast through our 20's and pay nothing, except the with holding from our paychecks for Midicare, no choice there! Once we develop a health problem or have an accident, then we become big fans of health insurance, we become in fact desperate for insurance at that point. The Bankruptcy filings show health care to be THE cause of bankruptcy in America by a large margine. Youth will always seek to avoid being the part of the insurance pool that pays in and gets little out. Age will change that in a way few kids in their 20's can even imagine.
Obama Care is the best law the Insurance Industry could write, their political power is nearly absolute inside the beltway. Their campaign and under the table payments to politicians and others in the system insure their powers remain in tact. All Obama Care seeks to do is to force all working Americans into the Private Insurance Pool, bringing more profits to the Industry. Afterall, the Industry would LOVE to force every kid from 18-30 to kick in to their plans, and by experience, the Industry knows this class of insured rarely requries payouts on the coverage.
Even if the Obama Care law works, and all Americans who work opt IN to the private Insurance pools, nothing at all will change as reguards the excessive costs of health care. Rates will probably skyrocket once Americans are all capitives of the Health Insurance Industry. The Neo-Fascist Corporate powers that Obama Care involves will surely tempt the Industry to rent seek on a vast scale. Hundreds of different Insurance Companies do not compete with each other, instead that use their power to take over Governemnt. Obama Care is corporations running health insurance. Government provides the levers of power for this Industry to capture the American Public and make them forced customers. It takes a rotten system and makes it worse. So what else is new in Washington?
ACA was meant to destroy much of the private health insurance business and take full control of what will be left of it.
BS and half truths. The government wrote regs that forced the insurance companies to change the plans they had been providing. Then the government claimed that since the policies were changed, the enrollees would not be grandfathered.
Maybe the insurance companies wrote the laws, but they didn't write the regulations. That's what happens when you try to help a scorpion.
Look up Fabian socialism, folks, and you'll find 100 years of history right there.
Understand it? Hell they have perfected it! Planned chaos says it all.
Obama's 'Tour of Contrition' is a new take on 'I did not have sex with that woman, Monica Lewinsky'. His back was against the wall so he pulled a Clinton and said he was 'sorry'. So America will now forgive him for the mess he created and will not fix because its his entire legacy.
Sometimes it's too late to say I'm sorry - ask nearly any man caught cheating on his wife (start with that Black golf celebrity that handled over 2/3-billion for his sexcapades.)
It's too late for Obama as well. This was a "final straw" with him - it shows he is exactly what his "pastor" the irreverant Jerimiah Wright said about him, "He's a politican, so of course he lies."
Americans will buy a lie until it affects their own pocketbook - then it goes from a lie to theft.
Obama's legacy will be written by the Left Wing Looney Tunes in academia; Obama's memory will be written in the minds of people who suffered under his deceit as a lying POS who destroyed their finances.

Tiger is mixed race, but called black?
Made a good choice of a White wife with mixed race children but hetero Tiger then stupidly threw that marriage away.
Obama is mixed race, but called black.
Made the mistake of choosing a black "wife" as cover for his "gay" lovers.
"No expense was spared."
600 million for just a web site.
Here here. A web site delevoper who had built numerous website for major companies was interviewed on the radio. He said he would have been embarrassed to have charged even $ one million dollars for a site like health.gov in full working order. He said it would have taken one month to build it.
Money laundering.
Kick all components of the Washington D.C. government out our your State.

"PERSPECTIVE"
<B>March 21st 2010 to October 1 2013 is 3 years, 6 months, 10 days.</B>
This is the time from Obamacare being signed into law and the first day of implemntation.*****
An utter, total disaster, because the Obamunists machine is comprised of people who never accomplished a thing in their entire lives but talk; never managed anything. never met a payroll, never participated in the real world beyond ivory tower academia or running for office. Never operated anything. never built anything, never had to worry about logistics or contractors. Even Hitler and Mussolini were able to get this aspect of their versions of a fascist government right.
<B>December 7, 1941 to May 8, 1945 is 3 years, 5 months, 1 day.</B>
This is the time we were attacked at Pearl Harbor to the day Germany surrendered. Mobilization of millions, building tens of thousands of tanks, planes, jeeps, subs, cruisers, destroyers, torpedoes, millions upon millions of guns, bombs, ammo, etc. Turning the tide in North Africa, Invading Italy, D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, Race to Berlin - all while we were also fighting the Japanese in the Pacific!!
And, I might add, Kicking their ass! Keeping people employed, and even with rationing providing a decent standard of living, fostering country loyalty and patriotism.
yeah.....so let's all just assume this guy has no axe to grind and buy into his version of the truth!
Educate yourselves and you will see the problem is our legislators and SC have subverted and contorted (or just simply ignored) the rule of law and written exemptions to the Health Insurers and Health Care Providers such that they can egregiously engage in clear and continuing violations to the Sherman and Clayton Anti-Trust Acts and Consumer Protection Laws the likes of which broght down both Standard Oil and Ma Bell.
I have some personal experience in that my wife requires a 2 hour outpatient procedure to remove a cyst on her spine. The hospital and doctors are charging 4 to 4-1/2 times (400% to 450%) MORE.......repeat 4-1/2 times.....what they charge Medicare and 4 times (400%) more than they charge in-network Aetna insured folks "by negotiated written contract". I know this becuase i have the CPT codes and a friend who works for Aetna looked it up for me. When i confronted the surgeoun as to why they would charge me, a full, upfront, prepayment multiples more, they just stated that my numbers were: "atleast $100 off and Aetna is divulging confidential info"! Are you effing kidding me? I will gladly pay $100 more than you are charging Medicare (and me thru my taxes) and Aetna inusureds, if that is your only gripe ------- which it obviuosly is NOT! It is a BIG SCAM and all involved know it.
Don't take my word for it, read what this practicing doctor states in email below where he provides facts from his own practice and the fraudulent medical cabal..
http://truecostofhealthcare.org/
My wife tried to sign up for Obamacare. What a f'in joke. What were offered were contacts to numerous worthless government/private programs like AIDS clinics or the County Hospital. She could have just as easily accessed those without even going to the Obamacare website. The website is a waste of time and offers no worthwhile plans at all.
"It was a natural and normal assumption that every other field of study could benefit from the application of scientific methods and insights. So, therefore, why not the management of human affairs through government?"
BECAUSE THE OLDEST AND BEST DEVELOPED SOCIAL SCIENCE IS WARFARE, AND SUCCESS IN WARFARE WAS BASED ON DECEITS, AND EVERYTHING ELSE IN NEOLITHIC CIVILIZATION WAS BUILT ON THAT FOUNDATION.
GOVERNMENT IS ORGANIZED CRIME, CONTROLLED BY THE BEST ORGANIZED GANG OF CRIMINALS. Therefore, more scientific management of human affairs is ALWAYS more scientific management of organized crime. Furthermore, it can not be any other way, since human civilization is the expression of basic energy system laws, in the special case of human beings, which can build self-reflexive models of the world, with which to guide their behavior. However, that ability to operate a conscious model of the world then simultaneously opens the way to have deceits work through the levels of those self-reflexive models.
It is entirely possible to have more scientific understanding of human affairs. However, when one does that one has to face the deeper facts about how and why human realities are always organized lies, operating organized robberies, in which the emergence of larger social groups means larger systems of organized lies, operating organized robberies. Politics should be seen as applied human ecology. However, the central control concept in human ecology is the issue of the death controls. After one has any life form, which means it can reproduce, then the total package deal of the chronic political problems come along with the nature of the existence of that life form. With human beings, that becomes more acute, precisely to the relative degree that we can make mental models of that situation, and so, relatively understand more that we are in that situation: that real human history has been resolution of conflicts through warfare, where success in warfare depended upon backing up deceit with destruction. Upon that basis of the selection for War Kings was what made states with governments, that expressed sovereign powers to rob, and to kill to back up that robbery.
As information became more important than power, fraud became more important than force. Therefore, during the last few Centuries, the Fraud Kings, the international bankers, have been able to systematically apply the methods of organized crime, in order to covertly take over the powers of governments, and to effectively privatize those powers.

Anyway, to return to my criticism of this article, and its shallow view of the problems with Obamacare, as many previous comments above already pointed out, this apparent disaster was probably deliberately planned at higher levels, that control the apparently incompetent politicians and bureaucrats. For more than a Century, the government of the USA has been recaptured and controlled by the international banksters. It is their agenda that is playing out through Obamacare. After all, there are almost no successful politicians who are not puppets of the banksters, since the persistent application of the methods of organized crime, such bribery, intimidation, and assassination of those that could not be bribed or intimidated, has become more and more successfully implemented to control the American government for more than 100 years.
The way I see it, the controlled opposition (such as the people who write articles like this one above) are just as much part of the problem as the established systems that they criticize, since the continue to operate within the same frame of reference, using false fundamental dichotomies, and therefore, continue to promote impossible ideals as somehow being the preferred "solutions" to those problems. They tend to do good analysis, using dichotomization in a relative way, but then collapse back to the same old bullshit social stories when they turn to proposing solutions, because they promote the relatively useful relative dichotomization as being an absolute dichotomization, which then supports the notions of impossible ideals, based on those false fundamental dichotomies.
It is possible to have more scientific understanding of human affairs. However, in order to do that one has to travel through the infinite tunnels of deceits due to the FACT that warfare and militarism, were the best developed social sciences and ideologies, which were paradoxically special sciences, since their success was based upon deceits, in order to operate organized systems of lies and robbery.
Economics can be a better science, when seen as a subset of evolutionary ecology in general. However, in order to do that, one has to use unitary mechanisms to understand things, not false fundamental dichotomies. Then the solutions become changes in the dynamic equilibria between different systems of organized lies, operating organized robberies, NOT the implementation of impossible ideals, which actually make the opposite happen in the real world. However, when it comes to human affairs, one of the deeper and more problematic problems are the degrees to which different people have been relatively selected, both genetically, and culturally, to be too attached to their own ideas, in fanatical ways. Again, the paradox of history has selected for those best organized gangs of criminals to tend to be the most fanatical about their own systems of relative lies, operating relative robberies, as being somehow the ultimate truth, while only everybody else is deceived or liars.
Of course, ironically, I perceive the infinite tunnel of self-reflexive paradoxes that opens up after one recognizes that everything that any human being "know" is necessarily some kind of relative lie, or relative illusion, which axiomatically applies to my own assertions as well. However, that too is a sublimely logical result of taking the principle of the conservation of energy seriously. The degree to which the biggest bullies' bullshit dominates all different societies is manifested everywhere, from the philosophy of science, through to particular political issues. However, there are no other alternatives which are not alternative bullshit.
Obamacare merely happens to be the currently leading edge of those kinds of phenomena in the USA, as its already well-established PROFIT FROM DISEASE SYSTEM drives itself through its internal contradictions towards it own psychotic breakdown, which is component of the overall psychotic breakdown of globalized Neolithic style of Civilization as a whole.
Human affairs can be scientific, and understood as operating as energy systems, subject to natural laws. However, they necessarily do that through the most intense, and maximized, deceits and frauds. One of the deeper reasons why that is getting worse, faster, and way more unbalanced, is that the degree of the social success of the biggest bullies dominating America with their bullshit has resulted in their controlled opposition spouting basically the same kind of bullshit in response to those problems. A more scientific society would require a series of profound revolutions in scientific understanding, which looped around back to be more widely appreciated by more people.
To repeat, not only IS government organized crime, controlled by the best organized gang of criminals, but it MUST necessarily be. Therefore, the problems we have are due to too few citizens being competent to understand that they are members of an organized crime gang, but rather believing in the bullshit that they have been brainwashed to believe in by the biggest bullies, for the benefit of those bullies. Thus, there is not nearly enough better balancing of the relative rates of social robbery, but rather, the runaway triumph of the 0.1% at the top of the social pyramid systems becoming way too successful,
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-11-11/001-have-never-had-it-better
Hence, we are ALL headed towards the paradox of final failure from too much success. In order to change that better would take genuinely better social science, which would perceive that the social pyramid system is actually a social toroidal vortex. However, since the vast majority of Americans have already been too dumbed-down, and already believe too much in bullshit, that appears to be practically impossible. Instead, we are looking at the runaway social insanity of the PROFIT FROM DISEASE SYSTEMS expressed through OBAMACARE becoming PSYCHOTICALLY SELF DESTRUCTIVE.
... I too am another mostly irrational human being, who continues to indulge in irrational hopes for a series of political miracles, to mitigate the unprecedented social storms and megadisasters that we appear headed towards, due to the profound contradictions that other sciences, and their related technologies, have advanced prodigiously, while human sciences are stuck in the doldrums, because almost everyone refuses to go through the necessary paradigm shifts which would be required to apply unitary mechanisms to understand human affairs as energy systems. Unfortunately, right now, it looks like social storms will finally break out, to end those doldrums, in terrible ways, rather than any other kinds of scientific revolutions are possible before then ...
To all you people who really expected Hope and Change from the Magic Negro: Conservatives / Tea Partiers were more than right about Obama. He's not only an incompetent fool, he's an even bigger liar than GW.

If Obama paid for insurance with all the fraudulent SS#'s attached to his name we might be able to balance the budget.
PS. The website you've linked to has taken down the page. Funny how that happens. I went to bed in the US and woke up in China.

Obamacare isn't about a website and it certainly isn't about health care. It's a huge stepping stone on the way to unprecedented control and subjugation of the US populace by a State gone stark raving mad. It's a key enabler and accelerator of the devolutionary process we've watched unfold since the Coup of '63.
It's just collectivization by another name, and we know how communists can't help but love the idea. It always ends in disaster and piles of dead bodies. They think it's just swell.
Yeah, well except for those five areas of failure mentioned by the author...who am I kidding - it's a complete and utter cluster duck.
The article is excellent in exposing root causes. The author correctly identifies the general problem so brilliantly exposed in Hayak's, "The road to serfdom" Expert, know-it-alls, trying to control everything in a top down fashion by fiat (and using debt based fiat to finance it (ha ha). Only markets can determine supply and demand and bring them into equilibrium. Millions of individuals working in their own self interest vs the all knowing central planners. Another failure for the central planners and control freaks. Statists will never learn since its not in their interest.
