"It's Not Just Harder To Get A Job - It's Harder To Get A Good Job"

For many in the US, as WSJ reports based on the bifurcated 'recovery' in the US, the recession never ended, "we're still in it... it feels like like we're still in it and it's getting worse." Simply out, America's jobs recovery is proceeding on two separate tracks - a pattern that is persisting far longer than after past economic rebounds and lately has been growing worse. For those with decent jobs, wages are rising, albeit slowly, and job security is the strongest it has been since before the recession. But many others - the young, the less educated and particularly the unemployed - are experiencing hardly any recovery at all.

 

As we have vociferously explained, hiring remains weak, and the jobs that are available are disproportionately low-paying and often part-time.

Despite three years of steady job gains, and four years of economic growth, many Americans have yet to experience much that could be described as a recovery. That sort of pattern isn't unusual in the aftermath of a recession, but it usually eases as growth picks up steam.

The two-track nature of the recovery helps explain why the four-year-old upturn still doesn't feel like one to many Americans. Higher earners are spending on cars, electronics and luxury items, boosting profits for the companies that make and sell such goods. But much of the rest of the economy remains stuck: Companies won't hire or raise pay without more demand, and consumers can't spend more without faster hiring and fatter paychecks.

"If you look at guys with just a high-school diploma or less than a high-school diploma, those guys are still in a recession," Mr. Porcelli said. The confidence figures, he said, "really drive home this idea of a bifurcation in the U.S. economy."

Economists aren't sure what is behind the trend, or how long it will continue. Low-wage sectors are often the first to hire during a weak recovery, and less desirable workers—whether because of their age, education or other factors—are the last people hired in almost any scenario.

 

"It's not just harder to get a job - it's harder to get a good job," said Harry Holzer, a professor of public policy at Georgetown University who has studied low-wage jobs. "Companies are more willing to create jobs right now if they're low-wage jobs and they don't have to pay much in benefits or make a major commitment to their employees."

Top-line measures such as jobs and GDP often obscure the uneven progress underneath. The long-term unemployed, for example, have seen hardly any improvement in their chances of finding employment, even as job growth has been steady. The unemployment rate for those with less than a high-school diploma is 10.9%, compared with 3.8% for those with a college degree, and the unemployment rate for those under 25 is over 15%, versus 6.1% for those 25 or older.

In the 1990s, the best job market of recent decades, "the situation of people at the bottom of the labor market improved but not dramatically," Mr. Osterman said. "Median wages have been basically flat for 30 years."

Company I work for cancelled healthcare for all employees without any compensation.

It has begun laying off older experienced employees and hiring young workers at 1/2 the pay.

Management is baffled by low company esprit de corps and disgruntled clients leaving in droves.

Seasoned employees watching the slow train wreck and dusting off resumes.

New normal corporate stupidity. This business was very profitable 5 years ago, owners are delusional.

You are both right, in a way.  I've never seen a white guy pop beer after beer at 1700 on the dot, and be there at 0600 with bells on though.

They aren't fed a line of BS while growing up that US kids, which I am one of, that mentally conditions them that it is wrong to work hard manually.  We are now raised to go to college, get a degree, wear a suit, be a yes man, buy a big house/new car, and sit at a desk 50 hours a week.

You're right though, we should stive to be more like Mexicans in science, engineering, crime, sanitation, and medicine. Actually, California used to have one of the best school systems in the country and now is a notch or two abopve Mississippi so we are slowly becomming more like Mexicans. Viva, diversity!

In my working youth (60's) I had three jobs where I stood side by side Mexicans in the work place: picking grapes, picking lemons and working in an aluminum extrusion factory. They were superior to me output wise in every way because they could WORK. I was a pampered white bread boy that thought he was put out for having to mow the lawn for an allowance. Many times, over time,  I've  thought about their tolerance and even kindness to someone that was their inferior.

It is fairly obvious that research that requires critical thinking is not engaged in and ending in comments quoting some one named "Root" and thinking oh that will get themmakes one wonder how low can the comments section in ZH go? Consistently dissing the down trodden while they themselves are victims of the very elite they claim to hate.  Me thinks they are bogus shills that may be trying to kill ZH off.

I use to send ZH posts to my friends but have stopped ashamed that someone  may scroll down and read the fucking comments. Little kids ranting and raving about boogey men of different colors, ethnicities and religions, while the old white mother fuckers of BOTH parties make hey on their particular prejudice.

I can only  assume that a great many posters on here are to young to have lived in economic times when even those with Masters degrees had to head to the Orange groves to try and eck out a dollar or two in a free country that still embraces slavery on it's own shores much less the amount it exports.

But Karma is a bitch and it is coming because so many on here have absolutely no street cred preferring to hide behind  made up screen names and measure the size of their balls by the number of guns they own but will never use.

Not sure why this particular discussion caused you to blow your top, but sometimes the valuable nuggets among comments are far more worthy than the original article.

Not this discussion so much. Well yeah prob. But mostly a disussion a few post back where some extolled the virtues of red  light cameras under the false assumption they are effective. Proof positive that even on ZH a site that use to be populated with comments that made one think, search and think some more, has degraded to the level of other sites where the uninformed are to fucking lazy to get informed. Not only that, they verbalize their ignorance as if they are proud of it. And the theives get richer  off the bodies of the innocents!  Other than that, its been a good day. As an early tea party supporter who even spoke at one of the early conventions early on I saw the ruse/scam.  Occupy and the Tea Party had similiar initial goals. Both blew it.  "We the people" are the government. If it is fucked up, "We the People" must accept the blame and the responsibility. Government is a necessity. It's role is to "SERVE" the people "equaly" as ,

I worked for three years in a defence company that was privatised. The government gave the holding company 100 million GBP a year to run it. To maximimize profits the company closed the scientists library, stuck them all 2 to an office, and best of all, closed down the military barracks where they were housed, thus decreasing the disposable income of the scientists by 95% over night.

 

Not everything should be privatised, especially when it makes weapon systems that can take out cities. The unions did fuck all. Eventually the company had to be renationalized.

Figure out a minimum annual earnings amount.   Eliminate the minimum wage and all other Federal social-programs (the states can do what they want, that's their business).    Let the IRS handle the difference between what people earn and what the minimum.
