The American public has purposely been dumbed down for over a century through the mechanism of the mandatory public 'education' system. Most teachers (usually the lowest in terms of ability at universities) are too dumbed down to realize that. (Websearch Charlotte Iserbyt and John Taylor Gatto & their research on American 'education'.) Even those going on to more technical/professional fields, limit critical thinking to their narrow specialties. So you can have scientists and doctors who are as clueless about the world and moved by propaganda as anyone else.
50 years ago, public school teachers on average had been top quartile students themselves. Now, public school teachers are on average drawn from the bottom quartile of students. The smartest professors at university do research; they get the bad ones (or TAs) to teach. Why? Because research professors make twice what lecturers do.
Unfortunately, history also shows us that regime change is never incremental. The system is done. We need a re-boot.
Intelligent, well meaning, good teachers have the system working against them. John Taylor Gatto was NY state and NYC Teacher of the Year. He had to go around the system to accomplish what he did with kids from poor and rich schools alike. Gatto ended up quitting because he was fed up with what is being done to harm children in the schools. He saw that the system did as it was designed to do and that there was no hope for reform. Its much worse since the time he taught.
REBOOT is exactly what we need. This needs to be a movement or a short term party with the only purpose to inject legislation to reboot the US government back to the basic "safe mode" constitution. Every federal politician gets fired and banned from federal elections, all political parties get banned and every nonessential government agency gets closed down. That's about the only way I can see this system saving itself before a total collapse. Our government is infested with malware and popups, time to REBOOT!
A significant proportion of the population is so tied into their "team" they couldn't see reality if it slapped them upside the head. Hell, 25% of the people polled this week said the Obamacare rollout is going great.
So Americans are 39% hardcore hunter-gatherer cultural descendants.

I've helped h.s. seniors with their homework in math, science, and history. These are good kids with A and B averages in schools rated among the top 10 public high schools in the state. I was shocked by their lack of critical thinking and writing skills. They seemed to want to get through the material as quickly as possible - using rote memorization and the prescribed 'right' techniques. There was very little curiosity, creativity, or true deep understanding of the material.
Their parents would feel completely insulted if it would be pointed out that their children are poorly educated. After all, don't the kids get 'good grades' and the school district spends millions each year? Unfortunately, the parents are as dumbed down as their kids. Unless you went to a private prep school which teaches the classical liberal arts (which include the 'Trivium' of general grammar, logic, and rhetoric), you aren't well educated. Anyone can remedy this condition. It takes little (or no) money to do this.
Thomas Jefferson proposed a system of public education to provide people with the tools for learning & thinking. He warned that only an informed citizenry could maintain a constitutional democratic republic and keep their hard won Liberty. Unfortunately, 'schooling' was used to do the opposite of what Jefferson wanted. (This use of the 'schools' as a weapon against the people began in the late 1890s-early 1900s.) The Jefferson public school proposal was defeated in the Virgina legislature.
