What Happens In Vegas, Doesn't Stay In Vegas (Anymore)

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

The Intellistreets system has finally come to the corridors of Las Vegas. So what is Intellistreets?

On its website, the system is described as “the only wireless information and control network for sustainability, security and entertainment.” Even more amusing, the company that owns the Intellistreets system is rather appropriately called Illuminating Concepts. The best part is that city officials claim “right now our intention is not to have any cameras or recording device.”

This is far from the first time we have learned about the installation of devices that can record audio and video being surreptitiously put in public places. I covered this late last year with regard to how the Department of Homeland Security was using grants to fund the placement of such devices on buses in my piece: Public Buses Adding Microphones to Record Passenger Conversations.

Now from CNET:

Las Vegas, you see, has invested in Intellistreets. These aren’t streets that carry you along, so that you don’t have to put one foot in front of the other.

Instead, this is a lighting system that, as MyNews3 reported, enjoys “all sorts of fancy features.”

These lights can broadcast messages and play music. Which sounds very Vegas.

However, they have other aspects: they can shoot video and record sound.

This being Vegas, you will understand the words of Neil Rohleder of the city’s Public Works Department: “We want to develop an experience for the people who come downtown.”

But what kind of experience are they truly developing? The company behind Intellistreets, Illuminating Concepts has as its motto: “Assisting in the Creation of Memorable Environments since 1981.” The word “memorable” might interest some.

Las Vegas public works Director Jorge Cervantes told MyNews3 that this was all entirely innocent: “Right now our intention is not to have any cameras or recording device. It’s just to provide output out there, not to get any feed or video feed coming back.”

Indeed, the explanatory video of how the system works spends most of its time presenting a compelling case for its excellence.

Near the end, however, there is this phrase: “Intellistreets also enables a myriad of homeland security features.”

This is what they look like.

Enjoy Big Brother Vegas...

Well, they’ve had a surveillance society in London for a decade (or more) now, and look how save London is.   Do you want a lawful society or just society?    I think all TRUE patriots understand that “yer either wid us,  eer again us”, and if “yer again us” we’re gonna be watchin ya:  Country FIRST!

"I think all TRUE patriots........"

In the good ol US of A I feel quite certain that many would argue the term "true Patriot".  Some who consider themselves true patriots scare me the hell out of me. Not to mention the litmus test used to define that term to enable one to become one of the monitors/arbiters of lawfull behavior since taken to the exteme, if history is any indicator, such measures inevitably lead to constitutional violations.

"Country FIRST!"

Let me rephrase that, A country that guarantee's individual rights first! Such as ours is supposed to but does not. Once the mechanisms are installed to suppress dissidence they will be used to do just that.  No man can avoid violating a law. A priviledged few can avoid being prosecuted.

It's not to regulate crime.  It's to spy on their security groups.  So if you are part of the security groups (police/garda/private) consider that now everything that you say, do and dance to in Vegas can and will be used against you as blackmail.

That's all the system is meant to do.  Fences don't keep people honest.  There are put there to keep the staff in the lines.

We have cameras on the stop lights here in Boise, ID. Twice in the last month, a bike rider and a pedestrian were hit and killed. Both times the driver left the scene. Both drivers were caught within days because of those cameras. The cameras were uncomfortable at first sight, but as long as they are not being abused, I can live with them.

Good point, and good example of the conflict between liberty and lawfulness.

I too support traffic cameras as the assholes are taking over the road.     Personally, I'd just shoot the redlight runners and speeders on the spot but I may be a bit extreme.

Not really, no one is debating between whether or not striking a pedestrian should be illegal, rather we're debating about the extent to which the law may go to monitor those who have committed no crime.

Redlight camera supporters need to do their homework. In Fl Goldman Sachs was one of the first backers of a Redlight camera company helping homestead Fl. violate the the applicable law at the time. Red light cameras increase accidents at intersections. Red light cameras are used by municipalities as revenue generators and numerous municipalities have put liens on homes and vehicles for failing to pay a red light ticket.  Numerous Florida municipalities freely violated state law using them with no accountability.  It is so bogus as to be laughable. The proof of their lack of efficacy is legion. FUcking google it! Or ask any motorcycle rider who suffers most from their failures!

Re: Redlight camera supporters need to do their homework.

I agree that cameras are a poor substitute for cops with guns to enforce traffic laws.   Personally, I'd just have cops at intersections and if somebody is speeding or runs a red-light the cops would just shot them on the spot.   I admit I'm a bit extreme about punishing asshole traffic law criminals tho.

Most cops I see at an intersection are to busy looking at their in vehicle computers (as if they are immune from the inattentional blindness that can strike an airline pilot or submarine captain) to notice.  I can not depend on a red light camera or a cop to save my ass. I do have a very nice get back whip I am not adverse to using.  But then as with snakes, you rarely see the one that gets ya. hmmmmm, a camera on every bush maybe.

I have never heard of any one getting a ticket here for running a red light because of the cameras. As I say, as long as they are not being abused, they are ok. There is way to much paranoia in this country now. If big brother really wants to monitor you, they don't need cameras or microphones or drones.

"I have never heard of any one getting a ticket here for running a red light because of the cameras."

Have you checked?

"As I say, as long as they are not being abused, they are ok. "

Since you are not aware of any issued tickets how do you know they are not being abused? Would you consider placing a lean on a mans home for failure to pay a two mule towns redlight fine punishment to fit the crime or "abuse" of the law? Have you researched the subject at all or are you basing your opinion on, oh gee wiz why not?

" big brother really wants to monitor you, they don't need cameras or microphones or drones."

It is not a question of what they can or can not do. It is a question of what is right!

This is exactly the sentiment that erodes autonomy and fuels leviathan.  It is no different than attempting to curtail our natural right to possess firearms.  It's unfortunate that some people abuse them and go on shooting sprees (or, in this case, strike pedestrians with a vehicle), but the liberal solution (government intervention) inevitably proves worse than doing nothing about it.  If you actually desire freedom, then there are tradeoffs you must accept.

Tue, 11/12/2013 - 14:24 | 4146583 akarc

I upped ya but redlight and other observance vehicles are not "liberal" solutions. They are totalitarian, facist, solutions and in the case of "redlight cameras" vehicles by which to extort more money from the ignorant! Let the fucking down vote begin!

Over the course of the last 50 or so years, how many "hit and run" accidents at corners occured where the "suspect" was NEVER found?

One? Probably. Ten? Maybe. Three hundred? Highly statistically improbable.

So, before you traded your freedom for the protection of Big Brother, the crimes were never solved?

Really?  Cops in your area don't do forensics, issue BOLOs, catch criminals that are NOT on camera?

Clueless, just like all the fools back in the 80s that cowed to Reagan and allowed warrant-less searches, lying to your face undercover cops, and 20 year sentences for plant possession.

How accurately can it geo-locate and track the movements of your phone, laptop, or any other wireless device by its MAC address (its "media access control address"—nothing to do with Macintosh—which is analogous to a device's thumbprint)? Can the network send that information to a database, allowing the SPD to reconstruct who was where at any given time, on any given day, without a warrant? Can the network see you now?

The SPD declined to answer more than a dozen questions from The Stranger, including whether the network is operational, who has access to its data, what it might be used for, and whether the SPD has used it (or intends to use it) to geo-locate people's devices via their MAC addresses or other identifiers.""

Naperville, Illinois installed a vast mesh network across our whole city for mandatory "smart meters." The installation was forced by police action (arresting two young moms) to monitor our minute to minute energy use. I did a FOIA for the data collected for 1 month, and it was 208 pages long. The data was analyzed by a fellow citizen and she told me when we got up, what we were doing (making coffee, dishwasher etc), when we left, returned home and when we went to bed. She also looked at the month and told me exactly when we were out of town. Next comes "smart" meters for water and natural gas. Of course, the mesh network will provide for some tasty survelience on each of the citizens as we travel about the city. No my friends, they are inside our homes. Check out the capabilities of Samsung's "smart TV" and their "disclaimers."

We are fighting in Federal Court and can use some help, not that we have a justice system anyway.

Las Vegas should be spending its dwindling funds on schools, hospitals and new water mains. Building a few storm resistant emergency shelters on high ground would be a good investment in public safety.  Instead, aided by Federal Homeland Security matching funds, the city wastes its money on buying stuff like snooper streetlights from a company connected to the crooks in Washington, D.C.
