Massive Pipeline Explosion Near Milford, Texas; Entire Town Being Evacuated - Live Choppercam

Tyler Durden's picture

Every day in the New Normal, it is either a mass shooting or an explosion in some pipeline or crude-carrying train. Moments ago, a pipeline in Texas exploded in a massive fireball and has prompted the evacuation of the nearby town of Milford.

From Breaking911:

Smoke and flames are visible for miles. There is a fear that an additional pipe may explode. Nearby schools have all been evacuated as well. NUmerous rescue teams responding; unknown if there are any injuries at this time.

UPDATE 11:30AM EST: According to county officials, a 10-inch pipeline east of U.S. Highway 77 and Farm-to-Market Road 308 was being worked on when it exploded.

UPDATE 11:31AM EST: NBC reports that there are no injuries.

Often natural gas (as well as other chemicals) will be added as a dilutent so it will actually flow.  This especially true with tar sands bitumen, which by itself is the consistency of peanut butter.

Sorry I'm not buying it. I don't care how much shit you add to it, it's still crude oil. Diesel fuel, which is a distillation product of oil, doesn't even explode.

How do you know it was a crude oil pipeline? And even if it is, crude oil has a LPG component.

It's not that uncommon to dig through pipelines when doing underground construction. Their location is often not known with great precision.

"Explosion" could be an exaggeration. I once saw a crew dig into and rupture a large high pressure gas main. It was awe inspiring to say the least.

That article states nothing about "Explosive Potential" as a hazard in the Hazrds section of the cited article.

Crude Oil can burn. It can also explode with a Detonating Charge. When excavating Swimming Polls IN ROCk we'd drill holes, set the Quarter Stick Charges w/Blasting Caps, and MODERATE with Diesel. Diesel remove the sharp Shock that you'd get with an explosion.

But...My guess is that the Pipe was EMPTY...since they were "working on it" You do not run product while working on a Pipe. It was filled with volatile Gases that DETONATED. This will rupture the valve providing Fuel to a fireball.

Hell....it is even hard to make Gasoline explode. You have to vaporize it and mix throughly with AIR to provide it with the Oxygen.

Working on cars and cleaning parts with Gasoline we used to have a Gallon Bucket of Gas lying around. If anybody who was not a mechanic wanted to offer "advice"...we had a solution.

We'd take our LIT Cigarette Butts and throw them in that Bucket of Gas. That would scare the bejeezus out of them and they'd leave promptly.

I AM STILL HERE AND NOT BURNED ALIVE. If you think that I am a son of a bitch, here, you have not fucked with me while working on a car.

Judging from what you write you should be aware of the explosive vapors. Or do you just play possum?

Thu, 11/14/2013 - 15:05 | 4155072 Tall Tom
Tall Tom's picture

I am very well aware of vapors. Before Fuel Injection most Cars had a Carburetor. If the Fuel-Air Mixture was not set right that car would not run.

Vaporizing Gasoline is harder than you might think.

Yes I am very aware of Vapors. That is what DETONATED that Pipe in Texas.

Thu, 11/14/2013 - 14:57 | 4155043 Tall Tom
Tall Tom's picture

Crude Oil cannot explode unless it has an OXIDIZER, or, there is a Detonating Charge. I can come off with all sorts of "facts".

The sky is blue. Plants are green because they reflect green light.  If you knock up your mistress..

But if the facts have nothing to do WITH THE TOPIC then they serve as a DISTRACTION. It is an ANNOYANCE.

Crude Oil will BURN when mixed with OXIDIZERS and ignited.

But DETONATION is something quite Different than COMBUSTION. (Actually the term, Internal Combustion Engine, is a misnomer as hundreds of Contained Detonations happen every minute that it is running.)

The facts are THE PIPE WAS FILLED WITH AIR AND VOLATILE GASES, as...THEY WERE WORKING ON IT. Those Gases, mixed with the air, THEN THEY DETONATED.

You do not REPAIR pipes FLOWING WITH CRUDE. You shut them down and DRAIN THEM FIRST.

Has ANYBODY HERE EVER WORKED on a Construction Site and did ANY REAL LABOR?

It seems like NOBODY HERE WILL SURVIVE an ECONOMIC COLLAPSE because of YOUR LACK OF PRACTICAL LABOR SKILLS.

Are you all a bunch of Paper Shufflers, Pencil Pushers, Keyboard Typists, and Telephone Answering Machines?

Do you have callouses on your hands? I still do.

Has ANYBODY HERE EVER WORKED on a Construction Site and did ANY REAL LABOR? Yes, I did. I have experience with welding gas tanks, and therefore I know that you stated something not so right, when saying "You shut them down and DRAIN THEM FIRST." You have to fill up with blanket gas (or in some cases water), just emptying them is quite dangerous. And since you are so generous with contempt, let me add that you won't survive any collapse much longer - because of your lack of SOCIAL skills, you just amply demostrated.

Thu, 11/14/2013 - 15:56 | 4155273 Tall Tom

You are right. I do lack Social Skills. I have little time for nonsense. I am glad that you worked for a living.

Obviously they did not purge that Pipeline before welding on it. And I do have utter contempt for those that have not worked for a living.

I claimed that I am a son of a bitch in a previous post. I am a son of a bitch.

There was no C4 that detonated the pipeline. It was volatile gases.

I will give you a Thumbs Up because you make the correct claims.

As for my lack of Social Skills...I care not to develop them.

Here's some more facts for you:

Without finance, architecture, engineering and other "paper pushing" skills, you'd have no construction projects to work on.  Then there the scientists and technicians who design and test the materials and equipment used in those projects.  Lots of math, lots of late nights studying for exams - years actually.  Been to college have you?  Got some mental callouses to show us as well?

Maybe you can run a D9, but can you design and build one from the ground up?  Thought not.

Call it "lack of social skills" if you like.  I call it overcompensating.

Now get in your F350 and drive over to the liquor store so you can get shit-faced all weekend and fuck up a million dollar job come Monday morning.

(and they wonder why we import Mexicans)

Easy now, children.  Division of labor tells us there's plenty of work to go around for all kinds.  Coordination, cooperation, and  mutual self interest makes the world go 'round.

I've done both - my pappy always told me you can make more money pushing paper than pushing steel but you develop a good work ethic and appreciation for quality by pushing steel.

I've learned a Coda to that statement:  You can make more money pushing people than you can pushing paper.  I'm trying to find it in me to be able to do that without offending my libertarian sensibilities.

Tall Tom's picture

When the Pipe is EMPTY OF CRUDE. It is the Dissolvents that detonate. When mixed with Crude it does not make that Crude prone to Detonaton. You must have AIR...OXYGEN.

Explosive Compounds EXPODE because they have an OXIDIDIZER in the Formulation. Nitro Glycerin, for example woks because the Nitrate has a lot of Oxygen available for the Glycerol to burn rapidly. (It is just Red Fuming Nitric Acid mixed with an Alcohol. The Alcohol is Hydrogen Rich.)

But why bother making the Finished Product? All you need to do is mix Nitric Acid and Sulfuric Acid. Then dump the Gycerol into ii...WITHOUT THE ICE BATH...get away fast...and let Nature take its course.

I seem to recall a similar matter of a Nat Gas pipeline exploding in 2000 where half of the natural gas going into California was cutoff (but not into Mexico). Thereby causing electricty rates in California to explode ...pardon the pun.

Terror Buckaroo? I don't know, to explode a good source of oxygen is needed to combust oil, that is why back in the day in the Navy our ships used sprayers to force oil into a mist in order to fire the ships boilers. I don't know how a pipeline of thick black crude explodes. We used oil fires in Navy firefighing school to practice damage control, when the lite the fires there was never an explosions, just a slow woosh and rising flames.

(all speculation here ) - If it is indeed a drilling pad with a rig on site as posted by some people above, there's a chance they started having a blowout, recognized the signs, and ran like hell off the pad. As margins get squeezed it's a certainty that M&O budgets get dinged.  Initially folks go along with what the engineers prescribed for maintenance, but after a while they tend to think that it was over-kill, until, well, until there's lots killed... and at this point the costs for maintenance look pretty reasonable (when staring at the costs for negligence and for rebuilding entire plants).

Just a bunch of Moroccans performing an old pagan-judeo-muslim ritual: today coincides with what is referred to as "Sha'alla" (Firesetting) where Moroccan tradition has it that on the day following the 10th day of the first month of the lunar calendar (called Ashoura, a Judeo-muslim celebtration) set large fires in public places (where superstition, magic and symbolic purification all mix together).

The day before, it's a nation-wide water fight (also from Judeic origins). At night, kids also wear masks and go around the neighbourhood holding a plate wrapped in a white cloth asking for money, sweets and dried fruits.

And round up all the Muslims already here and expell them...

Clearly a winning play...

Warren Buffet must have hired some munitions experts - time to roll the trains.

Hopefully this will keep the price of oil up.

Torching a few platforms worked well as a short term price prop-up.

It's always bigger in Texas...

When I was charting "safe" places in the US I had as one parameter that the location must not have any large industrial faclities nearby.

A pipeleine exploded and many are quick to critisize the safety of piplines and the Keystone project.  What do you see in the pictures?  How about a burning rig.  Obviously they were woring on or near the pipeline or tying in a well to the pipeline. Drilling and oilfield work in general is dangerous. Pipelines crisscross the US and have a very low frequency of failure.  How about trains and trucks. No where near the safety record on volumes moved over large distances.

The Pipeline industry claims a safety record to the tune of  0.1% is lost to leaks, do the math....

I can see the smoke cloud in Dallas. Actually, it looks like its above Irving, do no need to worry.

That's not too far from West, TX.

I can't see south out of my building, but it's clear enough to see to Waxahachie.

Thu, 11/14/2013 - 14:20 | 4154890 Blano

That's a pretty impressive cloud then, since Irving is Northwest of Dallas and Milford is south of Waxahachie.  So if you can't see south, you can't see to Waxahachie either.

Care to try again?
