Venezuela Jails Over 100 "Bourgeois, Barbaric, Capitalist Parasites"

Tyler Durden's picture

"It's time to deepen the offensive, go to the bone in this economic war," warned Venezuelan President Maduro - echoing Hugo Chavez's iron fist of socialism (and nationalization) before him - as his decision to jail over 100 businessmen is "defending the poor." As Reuters reports, plenty of Venezuelans have applauded his measures, saying price hikes were out of control, while others have expressed fears that Maduro could be uncorking dangerous forces as opposition forces note Maduro's economic policies were "chillingly similar" to those of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. Officials say unscrupulous companies have been hiking prices of electronics and other goods more than 1,000 percent. Critics say failed socialist economic policies and restricted access to foreign currency are behind Venezuela's runaway inflation. No matter which, Maduro thundered "They are barbaric, these capitalist parasites!"

Via Reuters,

Venezuela's socialist government has arrested more than 100 "bourgeois" businessmen in a crackdown on alleged price-gouging at hundreds of shops and companies since the weekend, President Nicolas Maduro said on Thursday.

"They are barbaric, these capitalist parasites!" Maduro thundered in the latest of his lengthy daily speeches. "We have more than 100 of the bourgeoisie behind bars at the moment."

...

Officials say unscrupulous companies have been hiking prices of electronics and other goods more than 1,000 percent. Critics say failed socialist economic policies and restricted access to foreign currency are behind Venezuela's runaway inflation.

"Goodyear has to lower its prices even more, 15 percent is not enough, the inspectors have go there straightaway," Maduro said in his evening address, sending officials to check local operations of the U.S.-based tire manufacturer.

...

Like Chavez, Maduro says he is defending the poor.

...

"It's time to deepen the offensive, go to the bone in this economic war," he said.

Only a few of the hundreds of shops targeted with surprise inspections had been found to be offering "fair prices," officials say. Some businesses are voluntarily lowering prices - or staying closed - in case the inspectors come.

"We've reduced everything by 10 to 15 percent, but it's not fair. I can't make a profit now," said the owner of one small electronics store, who asked not to be identified.

...

Venezuela's official inflation, 54 percent annually, is the highest in the Americas.

...

Prominent pro-opposition columnist Nelson Bocaranda said Maduro's economic policies were "chillingly similar" to those of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. The African leader also used security forces to enforce a price crackdown in 2007.

...

"This shows the economic chaos Maduro has got us in where prices have no logic. The government created this monster and now tries to pretend it will control it, but Venezuelans cannot be deceived by this electoral show," Justice First said.

Still, on the bright side, look at their stock market this year! That must mean things are going great, right?

Think of the wealth effect?

That comment made me flash back to the 80's when I was stationed in OK. every six months or so a 'tent revival' would come to town. I even saw a snake-handler preaching.

Anyway, the first time they came to town while I was there all the local goat ropers where asking if I was going, wink-wink, nudge-nudge. I thought, sure why not?

On the last day the preacher would do hus sex is evil sermon. All the woman would get so turned on by this that there would be a spike in births 9 months later.

Excellent cover for a few new preacher offspring. (and maybe a few of my own! )

When foreigners export to Venezuela at ever increasing prices, does that raise his ire?  Will he try to send them to jail?

Or is it only the local importers who are to blame?

What is sad is that humans are so absolutely predictable. History repeating itself over the thousands of years. The great hope that a written language would allow multi-generational learning to occur that would end this cycle, only seems to have accelerated it. We attempt to repeat the same old tragedies that have been the cause of so much pain and suffering over the generations, simply because we are "modern", that we have computers and magical technologies, that we can finally make "man" into the utopian being that was always the promise. We are so screwed. But you can bet Obama is taking notes and will be following in those same footsteps sooner than many might imagine.

Aaaah, yes, but maths and history are simple distractions for the weak and the ugly.  Everyone else gets by on beauty, charm and violence.  And THAT is why history repeats and the maths "don't matter".

Took me half my life to figure that out, but feel free to embellish or refute it.

Not sure how easy that would be. I worked with a guy that had a heck of a time getting a few folks from Venezuaela to the US legally.

He wasn't the type to do this but, for somepone else, I'm sure with enough funds, in the right envelopes....

Edit: Getting into the US was only part of the difficulty. Getting the OUT of Venezuela was a hell of a challenge as I recall.

Venezuela's government is completely lawless.  You can see the same pattern developing here.  Congress is giving up it's legislative power to the executive who now seems able to dictate law by fiat.  It's a very dangerous trend.

"Developing?"

This country has been effectively lawless since at least the 1880s, when the railroad-owned courts allowed corporations to have equal rights with human beings, and effectively put us all under their heel.

Somehow, the diehard right does not think that we would have light bulbs or Google (created with taxpayer-funded research!) unless the rich and the corporations have the right to own anything and create winner-take-all markets.

Somebody needs to amend the 14th amendment to exclude corporations.  They do not deserve equal treatment or equal protection, because they are unable to be a party to a social contract.  This is common sense.

Most likely it will be just like every government that has ever existed: a lackey of the rich and their proxies, the corporations and banks.

Can we please stop cheering on the CIA, oil companies and banksters as they screw over Venezuela?  This is utter BS propaganda, and seeing this crap on ZH makes me wonder if anyone has learned anything since 911?

Chavez was one of the guys resisting the banksters, after his death he handed over to this guy - who has tried to hold things together.  Always the banksters attack with inflation, like clockwork - raises food prices, causes hunger and then social unrest.  When they want to get rid of some world leader and install one of their puppets - they will use either inflation or sanctions to starve the people.

I hear so often that people think they are 'awake' - that they see the world and understand whats really going on - then they fall for the same lies that sent the US to war in Iraq, and nearly started WWIII in Syria.

How about ignoring the propaganda, the next thing we will hear is how the US needs to send in some soldiers to 'keep the peace' - oust this 'brutal dictator' and of course make the Venezuelan oil safe for BP.

This is ZH for FFS - how about some rational and critical thinking, not this kneejerk response to bankster propaganda.

What Maduro propaganda?  I have never seen one word of this guy from any source - I simply dont care what he says - he can go fkn die so far as Im concerned.  I look at what is happening.  I dont listen to anyone - period - words are just fkn noise.

All I look at are policies, actions and results - then I form an opinion about who's interest is served by those results.  In the current case, it is cut and dried that the actions taken are aimed at improving the interests of Venezuelans.  There is also a font of information regarding the ongoing covert action against Venezeula - it is obvious, even without knowing one iota of history.  Of course if you knew history, then you would need to know nothing else.

The right of the Venezuelans to actually profit from their oil, instead of suffering the 'Resource Curse' - which they have most definitely suffered in the past.  The policy changes under Chavez had immense impacts on literacy and poverty - these policies are continued under Maduro.

The War Against Venezuela has been going on for many years, by Bush abd Obama, at least. Probably Clinton, too. I have no doubt that the same group who almost deposed and killed Chavez years ago, and with the full support and financlng of the CIA and US State Department, are doing everything they can to undermine the economy of Venezuela. NO DOUBTS WHAT-SO-EVER!

If only the Attorney General in the US and his counterpart in the UK had the balls to arrest the top 100 bankster criminals in New York and London, and put them in prison like Maduro.

Maybe Maduro is as "crazy" as Chavez. Crazy like someone defending his country. Crazy like Snowden. Crazy like Assange and Manning.  Crazy like a fox.

When they have run out of the demons that are productive and providing goods and services will the poor be any better off? Of course not. This is self destructive madness. Like all revolutions led by demagogues the State will eventually collapse, but unfortunately the cyclical process of collapse and recovery each time damages the economic, social, and political dynamics of the people making the next cycle more negative than the last. This is the sad story of Latin America. They just do not learn from their mistakes. The exception so far is Chile.
