The "Obamacare Shock" - One California Employer's Terrifying True Story
From a Zero Hedge reader:
My company, based in California, employs 600. We used to insure about 250 of our employees. The rest opted out. The company paid 50% of their premiums for about $750,000/yr.
Under obamacare, none can opt out without penalty, and the rates are double or triple, depending upon the plan. Our 750k for 250 employees is going to $2 million per year for 600 employees.
By mandate, we have to pay 91.5% of the premium or more up from the 50% we used to pay.
Our employees share of the premium goes from $7/week for the cheapest plan to $30/week. 95% of my employees were on that plan. Remember, we used to pay 50% now we pay 91.5% and the premiums still go up that much!!
The cheapest plan now has a deductible of $6350! Before it was $150. Employees making $9 to $10/hr, have to pay $30/wk and have a $6350 deductible!!! What!!!!
They can't afford that to be sure. Obamacare will kill their propensity to seek medical care. More money for less care? How does that help them?
Here is the craziest part. Employees who qualify for mediCAL (the California version of Medicare), which is most of my employees, will automatically be enrolled in the Federal SNAP program. They cannot opt out. They cannot decline. They will be automatically enrolled in the Federal food stamp program based upon their level of Obamacare qualification. Remember, these people work full time, living in a small town in California. They are not seeking assistance. It all seems like a joke. How can this be the new system?
Pelosi, pass the bill to find out what's in it? Surprise! You've annihilated the working class.

This is so sad that I laughed.
obummmmer care:
instead of addressing the price gouging we call the pharma industry, we will FORCE everyone to participate in it!
The US was the last developed world market from which profit could be obtained, and without profit innovation crawls to a halt. That's the path Obamacare sets not just for Americans but the whole world.
artificial profits. its not a free market when there is a gun to your head. btw i think its time to TBT
Sign up for medical and
- get auto-enrolled in SNAP
- get auto-registered as a democrat
- get auto-enrolled for every available govt subsidy
- hand your life over the the govt and let them make all your decisions
- and if at some point you don't like it then tough shit - its for your own good
my wife has to take pills for 2 different medical issues. our insurance ($1,500/mo) had already booted her to the generic brands which were about $50 a bottle. They just dropped both from our insurance and now it costs between $200-$300 for the same bottle.
Bummer, sorry to hear that.
Thanks, many are in a worse spot. At least it's finally hitting home with more and more people. Now it's all about hanging on.
You may already know this - but check out Wal Mart's pricing. I use them and a internet place from India - www.alldaychemist.com. I was worried about whether the stuff from India is legit, but my BP and cholesterol meds from there definitely are as I've had my blood tested a couple of times as I've now been using them for a couple of years.
Agree
I have used Alldaychemist for two years with good results
The gov't of Guyana does enough QC to keep the bootleg/low dose/no dose imports to a minimum. That said, a chronically obese diabetic can buy any needed meds fo $10 or $15 a month. Malaria treatment for $ 8.00. Antibiotics for pennies per capsul. Dr. visit for $10.00 to $20.00. Or public health for free. Methinks Americans are getting screwed.
cholesterol meds? Are you kidding me? I figured for sure any and ALL hedge readers knw the cholestarol hype is all bunk. Sorry to pop your bubble, but you NEED fat and cholestarol or you will die.
GOOD: Try not to let the idiot side of you out so often. I got plenty of cholesterol runnin' through the veins while taking Crestor right now. I had a heart attack at 42 from plaque buildup in the coronary arteries and would prefer not to go through that again.
On that note, the bill for that 48 hours of hospitalization: $140,000.
this link works:

Sounds to me like you are saving money. You went from paying $1550/month for pills to $300. Put some of that money away in case of an emergency or regulat doctor's visit.
no. his monthly insurance premium is $1500. his pills use to be $50 each.
" ..now it costs between $200-$300 for the same bottle."
Order from Canada..., who gives a phuck if it's against the law!
"Order from Canada"
You know, that might not be a good long-term plan.
Canada = 35 million peeps
USA = 320 million peeps
Their drug system can't possibly supply a vastly growing number of 'merikans.
Also, the drugs are cheaper because big pharma is forced - by negotiation - to sell to the Canadian govt. cheaply. Now that obamacare price controls are coming, big pharma will tell Canada (and all the euro govts) to pound sand.
Pay more or get no pills, 'cause we can't overcharge in the USA like the good ol days.
I kinda like that: "pay full freight or get no freight"
Apart from obamacare, that should have happened a long time ago.
http://www.jcmrx.co
You're welcome
The so-called reimportation is complicated, but I while I agree that too many drug coming south across the border from Canada is unsustainable, so too is it likely that the PhARMA companies will tell the other nations to pound sand. First, compulsory licencing would be the result and the worse case for the drug co's. Second, the marginal cost of production is so low that they can keep this ball rolling for a long time.
Life is about choices, sorry to hear this but you chose a women with weak genetics (Nature is a harsh mistress). Get your drugs from outside the U.S. and buy the dividend paying stocks of the companies providing those drugs so you at least recovery some of your money. It's the only reason I can think of why I have shit like Macy's in my portfolio. Yeah, I didn't choose wisely either. I wonder if cronic spending is genetic?
I remain long black markets (cheaper drugs among other things) and sharecropping.
LOL I hear you LOP. Yes I try to make up for it in ways that you mention (div paying companies). I agree about buying outside of the U.S. Adjustment is the key.
Try Costco.
Try Mexico.
Try CO, carbon monoxide.
Just kiddin'
1,000 laughs a day keep the Obama blues away.
Yeah she is going that route today.
We put my daughter on a state sponsored health plan. It was cheaper and then my wife and I went to self plus spouse. My 4 year old's premium goes up roughly 3% per month.
They won't take payment via electronic check or CC. They want a hard check, If the check is not in by the 20th of the month they kick you off the plan and you have to start all over. It's happened to several of my wife's co workers.
This makes me very nervous, Fonz, because I don't see an end in sight for the total subjugation and breaking the backs of the middle class. I would bet you any money that the people who voted for Obama twice would have no problem voting for him a third time. Maybe that's the plan. There are sociopaths who create horrible tragedies and inflict terrible pain on their victims only to rush in and be seen as heroes rescuing them. Firemen who set fires, nurses who snuff out the life of their patients, EMS workers who run down people with their cars then answer the 911 call. Is this what its all about? Create the disaster then rescue? Very nervous indeed.
I had dinner with an Obamabot couple last week. The wife proudly said to me that she is voting repub next time because on of her friends lost their insurance and she is afraid she might lose hers. I found it funny that she became concerned only when it was knocking on her door...and even then she only knew to change to the other head of the two headed beast.
The husband was even funnier. He works for one of the most profitable insurers. He was upset that Obama lied, but he felt Obama should have just told everyone he was kicking everyone off their plans to make sure everyone had no choice but to enroll. Of course this would not impact my friend, as his company would somehow fall outside of this. So to see one friend confused but limited in brainpower and the other one embrace fascism as long as the gun is not aimed at him was depressing instead of funny. We are so f'd.
That is depressing. I'm not sure I could have sat throughout the entire meal without bursting into tears of frustration. Since it might be very negatively effecting them, then its a bad idea. Otherwise, Obamacare is the savior of mankind in America. It doesn't matter who they vote for now, they did their damage to millions of people. Next up, Hillary to the rescue because its her turn now. Ugh.
I sat quietly and just drifted away mentally. Then when we were getting ready to leave I went on their open laptop and left this on.

He's absolutely right. Selfish ignorant policiticans are voted in by selfish ignorant people. Garbage in, garbage out. I hope your friends watched the clip and understand how it applies.
You always wondered how the Germans did what they did to other human beings...now you know..if it didn´t affect them..then it was Okay...fire up the furnaces
I also marvel at how our "free press" has devolved.
Lies of previous presidents, Nixon (about the break-in) and Clinton (what does "is"mean) were not glossed over by the press.
Now it's like they lost their balls or more likely are totally co-opted.
Once they figure out how to plug the Internet, we will have really crossed the rubicon. Welcome to FEMA camp world. It's a small world after all.

People on this forum attempt to rationally discuss the larger issues that affect the world and nation. But 90% of the public ONLY care about how they are personally affected.
I have relatives who love Obama because they credit him for one specific mortgage modification program that benefited them personally. If this one program went away or ceased to benefit them they would suddenly hate Obama and vote for the other guy, whovever he is.
Lots of truth to that. We have neighbors who are friends who are big libs and 0zer0 supporters. The husband is always disparaging WBush at his house, but does say one thing good about him. He likes the Bush tax cuts because his dividend rate was reduced to 0%. He always tries to goad me into a debate, but I bite my tongue. I learned long ago to never discuss politics or religion with friends or family in their house if you want to keep the relationship. But when he is in MY house and starts his talk, I go after him full bore. So bad that my wife has to intervene to keep me from killing him, and she is a big time lib too. It just shows how stupid and selfish people really are. And this guy likes to brag about how smart he is and how he has a Masters in Business from Pepperdine. Me, I'm just a simple country boy and engineer. I have always had to understand how the real world works or my systems fail. Reality is a great teacher but you have to let go of your ego and listen to what reality is telling you.
Pills treat symptoms and not underlying disease. Your wife should be on a plant based diet and get off the chemicals.

... obamacare is not designed to benefit the public or the medical community ... it was designed to benefit the insurance companies and drug companies ...
It'll sink the drug companies too ...
and insurance companies....

mindblowing that I can go to a dentist and end up with more teeth problems than before.
That's not a picture of your dentist, is it?
Putting an anencephalytic airhead like Nancy Pelosi in charge of policy making is like handing a 16-year old a quart of vodka, a fistful of Quaaludes, and the car keys, and urging him to 'Break the land speed record, kid!'
It's all fun and games till the bubble-gum lights and armored personnel carriers start gathering outside your house ...
Collorary: I own a small business in IL. We've just been told that at the end of our policy period next year, base premium for our employees will rise by 38% - for shitty coverage. At present, we pay the premium in full as an employment benefit.
Guess which decision we'll make on that.
By design, you will particiapate in a single payer system, one way or another.
.gov is doing a fantastic job of transferring the wealth from the poor to the wealthy. The insurance companies have a captured audience, the morgue is making hay with snap, xerox with medicaid, the drug companies, and the list goes on. In the mean time .gov has a society that depends on them to live. It's pretty disgusting that we have fallen to this point.
All well and good, but where's the state-sponsored live entertainment (refuseniks being thrown to the lions)?
Alright then!
Single payer here we come...can't happen fast enough.
This is only going to create more of a rift between employers and employees.
I give the corporations a pass here, for once. Usually they are a bunch of shitbags, but even they are getting fucked over by the health insurers (backed by the government).
NONE OF THESE ASSHOLES DO NOT GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT YOU.
The corporate owners are doing just fine.
Yep they all want a piece of me, everyone.
Double negative: five yards.
That's what happens when you let healthcare industry lobbyists write the healthcare laws. Why anyone would expect anything different is just beyond explanation.
This is not nor was it ever "socialized healthcare". It's fascism.
It could be that Obamugabe is sharper than most of us give him credit for. Could be his thinking is the 4 million who have received cancellation notices, now having more disposable income, will kickstart the economy for him...
+1 for Obamugabe.
That logic is so twisted and bat-faced stupid, that you are probably right. It sounds just like how 0zer0 thinks, and is as good as "we have to pass it to find out what's in it". Well done sir.
How about boot-strap him and his gang and fascists out of office ? There are some legal ways to do that.
Oh, SNAP
I remember not too long ago the idea was floated that employee benefits were not being properly taxed. They didn't like that employers were providing free/subsidized healthcare. Well they seem to have put an end to that problem. You watch - the next thing is a NEW agency in Washington to control vacations. You will have to book well in advance and only have a few possible destinations.
The good news is that we will probably be able to go to Cuba. Nice beaches. Nice cigars.
One more thing to say here -
We all deserve everything this president is shoving up our asses.
We deserve it by either directly voting for him, or we deserve it by not doing enough to keep him out of office, whatever that may be, whatever that takes.
The founders of our country found a way to get king george 'out of office'.
I would disagree.
Everyone gets a vote and the current administration promised free shit to half the population. Took ownership of GM and handed it to the UAW which is more of the population. And then promised government workers he would hire more government workers so they could all do less which is even more of the population.
Our founders left their own country because they couldn't fix it. They started a new operation. That is what will happen in the end. Either a chuck of Central America or an island somewhere will be the new world for the earners.
King george imposed his will and his laws and his taxes over here from across the pond. Yes, we left the island but didn't escape his rule - until we spilled enough of his army's blood.
The only way responsible lawful people are going to escape this new lawless oligarchy is to spill more blood.
Its only going to get worse until that happens.
Why do you think they are trying so hard to take our guns?
King george imposed his will and his laws and his taxes over here from across the pond.
Then we got much needed help from Louis XVI and Lord Cornwallis had to surrender at the siege of Yorktown. Then Louis and his wife Marie Antoinette had their heads chopped off.
Oh ! The law of unintended consequences - again .
Now we can have our GMO cake and eat it too - with permission of course from our friends at Monsanto and ConAgra !
Respectully, you and I seem to have spent time in the same place so I'll put it this way. I can honestly say that many moons ago I spent much time on the quarterdeck and in the pit that I didn't deserve but was purchased by the poor choices of fuckups in my direct vicinity. Same goes for this situation with our current TOTUS.
The Free Shit Army still seems to hold sway but that worm might turn as well.
I've warned people about this man for years now and few people listened. I don't know what else I could have done. The Marxist con man is fully entrenched in our lives now and it's very sad to see this happen.
They still don't listen. There's *still* legions of fucking retards swinging from his nuts, hanging off every word he says.
"One more thing to say here -

Compared to what, Mitt Romney? The way you talk, you would think you had a choice. One corrupt Chicago pol or one thieving hedge fund douchebag. Some choice.
The public fought Obamacare every step of the way or don't you remember?

What many fail to realize is that Health Care Insurers are coporations that want large profits. None of them are non-profit/not-for-profit entities. The CEO's of the companies want larger bonuses, and Obama Care legislation gave them the excuse to increase their margins ergo their bonuses.
Actually there are not-for-profit Health Insurance companies in the US... there were a lot more of them before the HMO boom, but they still exist (executive compensation levels are still an issue, but there it's minor league compared to the comp package one can negotiate when a public float and Bernanke-supported P/E ratios exist).
But just like with Walmart, more than 90% of the population doesn't bother to look beyond the lowest price.
In the REAL WORLD of benefits mgmt, healthcare is all about claims mgmt.
The sponsoring corporation is likely participating in their groups risk, buying a self-funded, partial self-funded or other experience (claims) rated benefits finance plan. Specific and aggregate stop-loss (deductibles) are the limiting factors for large claim amounts. Employer pays for claims administration, PPO network discounts, pharma card discounts and all the other ancillary bells & whistles.
If the plan blows-up with lots of catastrophic claims, the claims exposure stop on the group as a whole is raised, and same stop-loss carrier gets more premium as the risk is likely still ongoing. If claimants died, probably not so much rate impact as risk is no longer ongoing.
Even employers of 25 lives have access to partial self-funded plans. Greater risk on a small group, but the access is there; or was.
Large groups of 500 or more are all about price for service. Some carriers do everything in-house and can make a good profit for plan that runs well, is regarded well by employees and keeps enough margin to avoid the shock several ICU and dread diseease cliams over a couple weeks will have. Of course, if you have a new human resource director who has "cut out all the fat (reserve margins) to "save the company money", when the bad month or two happens, the plan is too stressed to work smoothly.
Obama-care could have been entirely aout mitigating the dread disease and high dollar claim risks over first $350K. Were there an authoritative claims resource to handle the large claims, ongoing premium costs would be way more manageable.
Excellent observations.
Not even ten KongressKlowns, much less Obama and Sebelius, would understand a word of it. Or the math ...
Could you restate your points in a coloring book?
Speaking of Health Care Law changes... my sig other gets cronic migraines. Recently got called for Jury Duty (yea, fun... not). Anyways, sends in letter from primary physician (from last year) saying not fit for duty. Send into courts. They say under new guidelines she has to submit a new one. Call doctors office and ask if they can basically change date, and send out new letter as nothing has changed, which they realize as they provide treatment. Doctor says can't do... new health care mandates require her to go into doc office again, before letter can be issued... now I'm wondering why? Does this info get passed on to some database? BS if you ask me...
They want their co-pay. That is all.
Gate-keeping.
I should send in a bill with the letter for the courts to reimburse me my time and co-pay... I wonder what they would do? Then file a lien when they don't pay... hahahaha..
Same sort of issue with prescriptions. Generic pharmaceutical I need, $20. Doctor 'visit' to get new Rx, $160, zero testing involved. Mindless adherence to regulations? Litigation mitigation? Who knows, though it certainly leads to the perception there are a lot of medical rentiers operating these days.
Funny you say that. Her previous primary care physician was an older gentlemen, fun to talk to, used to do house calls back in the day. He was willing to do anything without coming in. Too sick to make it to the office? No problem, call in, explain your symptoms, and he called in an Rx to the pharm. I'm sure he would gladly write a new letter, but unfortunately he passed away. The new doctors are younger, and seem extremely clueless. Plus, they want you in FOR EVERYTHING... oh, and did I say that the "new" practice has quite a few indian docs? Not that that is bad, but what happened to US docs? Must be all about co-pays these days...
"oh, and did I say that the "new" practice has quite a few indian docs? Not that that is bad, but what happened to US docs?"
Meh, where to start. Maybe look at the history of the AMA and professional licensure. Sorta like the last guild/union to be broken by foreign labor, for the benefit of the healthcare industrialists.
Why? Does the doctor get paid for her new visit?
Here you go...
https://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs8-med.htm
Well, so much for that new iPad I wanted for Christmas.
I'm trying to understand the math here:
The per insured employee cost you used to pay was: $750,000 / 250 = $3000.00
Now it is: $2,000,000 / 600 = $3333.33
This is an 11% increase, which is significant because the cost should go down for a larger group. What I don't get is how did the employee contribution go up 4.3x ($30/$7)? Were the non-insured employees contributing to the insured ones? (The employee contribution should otherwise drop if you are now paying 90%+ vs the 50% you were paying before.)
Math is no longer applied in the US other than we're #1.
drchris you did not mention the Pre-deductibe = $150....O-Care-deductible = $6000+
Clearly the deductible sucks, the cost of the plans increased by double digits, employer has to cover more employees and 90%+ of the cost. They will either have to cut the employees salaries, freeze raises for years and/or pass costs on to their customers.
The numbers for the employee contribution doesn't make sense to me though. This argument would be much stronger if those numbers made sense.
Sounds like it's time to sign up for Medicare and SNAP.
China Russia, sell all your treasures!!!!!! come on lets end this.
Next: confiscation all wealth over $100,000 per account, with FREEZE on wire transfers like JP. limits on ability to move.
Capital controls' as banks crumble; all funds over $ 100,000 to be confiscated like Cypruss banks, to put into POOL. (Lockbox, giggle sniffle, for the good.)
Like SS Lock box. giggle.
and.....ITS GONE.
"Employees making $9 to $10/hr, have to pay $30/wk and have a $6350 deductible!!! What!!!!
They can't afford that to be sure."
Maybe you should pay them more, then?
They are going to be paying them "more" as you requested.
The insurance that the company pays for their employees is going to triple.
Benefits are usually considered part of compensation.
But maybe they should all get raises to say.....$80k a year.
That would fix it. In a liberal's mind anyway.
In reality, this company is going to be laying off peeps BIG time, unless it has an extra million -plus they don't mind parting with every year..
Didn't you know? The setting of wages (and prices, too!) is completely arbitrary! If employers were nicer people they'd just treble their employee's wages and end poverty tomorrow, but, oh no, they like making the little guy suffer!
But don't worry, it's only a matter of time before the US electorate realises the answer to high prices and profiteering is Maduro-style liberation for the masses.
God, I can't wait until our beloved leaders make iPads affordable by forcing profiteering retailers to sell them below cost. I'm going to buy up the store's entire stock, each and every time they get a new load delivered!
And maybe you should find a quarter and buy a clue.
spoken like a true libtard that has never had to make a payroll.
Obamacare is your ilk's creation.
Maybe next time think instead of feel.....if that's not too much to ask?
I'll be damned! Enrolling in ObamaCare is a SNAP after all!

I work in Ca. My original Health Plan I've had for the last 7 years was cancelled in July (start of our fiscal year) and I was forced to sign up for a nearly identical plan that now costs 35% more than the plan I lost and the new Insurer drags its feet paying my doctors and labs; I get the bill stack in the mail that NEVER happened with my previous plan.
I hate the ACA, it has made my health insurance more expensive with worse service; about what I would expect from any government run debacle.
Hey...maybe we can all just get married to each other and then have only one paying for the insurance ? We could have multiple spouses and then everone gets covered under one. Just legalize bigamy...maybe that is the trick. Its all (C)ACA.
Opt out and just pay your own way. There's a reason the Aetna CEO's of the world make $25 million and we don't.
They will bring this thing down fast with this crap. Holiday sales will be catastrophic as many save for the deductibles, others are just broke, others are scared.
My wife and I both work and are doing fine and I used to eat lunch out 3 or 4 times a week-- now once every two weeks. I iron my own shirts and we do our own housekeeping. Was planning on flying to visit inlaws, now I'll make the 12 hour drive. Starve, beast.
Nobody is going to "save for deductibles". Almost nobody. Because very very few now are responsible for themselves. This medical/snap shit is a deliberate attempt to get people sucked into govt dependency and therefore democrat dependency - and its working very well. Nobody is going to vote to cut off money from themselves. And the producers who remain will get sucked dry by this dependency mob as they get more desparate. That's the grand plan by the kenyan thug and his marxist army, their plan for redistibuting wealth - which is what obamacare is all about -nothing more nothing less. Its working well - which is why the democrats wont fix it -its working just like they want. And most idiot sheep in this country are completely blind to their tactics, and call those who aren't blind "conspiracy theorists".
The only way we are going to defeat the beast is to destroy/kill it - too late to try to starve it.
A minority but a minority with money to spend can plan and will save against the deductible. But you're mostly right on that -- credit cards will cover it for those who have them. The rest won't pay the bill.
Save for Obamacare, or save for more ammo?
Hmmm, that's a tough one!

Employees who qualify for mediCAL (the California version of Medicare)…
By the way, the businessman mistyped: Medi-Cal is the California version of Medicaid, not Medicare: Med-Cal is a health insurance program covering Californians who couldn't afford health care since 1966.
As for ObamaCare, only the members of Congress willing to shut down the government to stop this train wreck fulfilled their responsibilities to their constituents. The details of the travesty were in the bill before them and Ted Cruz elaborated on these dangers while he stood before them.
The tragedy for the Americans suffering their loss of money and healthcare can be traced directly to every single Democrat in Congress and every single Republican Senator who voted to end debate on the filibuster that would have stopped OBamacare.
As for Medi-Cal coverage under ObamaCare, this is straight from the horse's mouth:
Starting in 2014, the array of mental health and substance use disorder services will expand to better meet the needs of individuals eligible for Medi-Cal. All Medi-Cal beneficiaries who qualify will be able to receive the following mental health benefits through Medi-Cal Managed Care Plans and Medi-Cal Fee-For-Service:
Substance Use Disorder Services Benefits:
Dental care, vision services and speech therapy are generally available only to children and youths under age 21, but certain adults and pregnant women are also eligible for these services. Dental services will be available to all adults starting May, 2014.
These are all services that Medi-Cal covers today and will continue to cover for current and new enrollees.
Do I Qualify for Medi-Cal?
The Medi-Cal expansion starting on January 1, 2014 will open the door for a few million more low income Californians under age 65 who are currently ineligible for coverage. To be eligible, your annual income must be lower than 138 percent of the federal poverty level (in 2013 that would mean an individual who earned less than $15,856).
The Medi-Cal expansion also allows coverage for parents who would lose coverage under current rules if their income slightly exceeds the federal poverty level

IOW, California now has amnesty with health coverage.

I must be missing something. The math in the 2nd paragraph is $3,000 per employeee when there are 250. It is $3,333 per employee for 600 employees. And in the next paragraph he is paying 91.5% of the premium? Come on. These numbers do not make sense.
COme on , the minimum wage needs to be increased, why is this cheapo paying $9/hr, illegal aliens charge more than that out of home depot and they want pick up and drop off services.

Troll
So this asshole is angry that his employees are paid so little that they qualify for Food Stamps. I mean, he's really pissed off about it and it's the goddamn government's fault for pointing it out.
And he's really livid about the fact that his employees make so little that they can't afford $30 a week for a crappy health care plan, let alone a decent one.
Of course, none of this offends him enough that he'd ever consider paying a livable wage. Nevertheless he's incensed.
Obamacare is an unmitageted disaster of comically epic proportions. But it's equally disasterous that we are becoming a nation where a majority of the workforce are now paid a subsistance wage. Minimum wage is now "normal wage" as anybody who has been out job hunting recently can tell you.
You are right Blinko. He should just just fire the lot of em and close up shop.
Math and econ 101, I take it, are not your strong points... its very simple, what would you call a "living wage"? You also realize that by increasing overhead you have to increase service or product prices (simple supply/demand/price). Increase too much, and you can kiss good bye your revenue. Not only that, but if everyone did this, you are back to square one, as prices went up, and you are left with X amount of dollars buying less...
incorrect assumption: for you to be correct there must be no excessive profits at the employer / owner level. But there are so you are wrong.
There's room to drive it down & it must be done somehow.
If the employers/owners take too much the workers all suffer. If the workers take too much, by argument, contract or theft then the employers suffer too much.
Today the balance is gone with all gains going to employers.
Define "liveable" wage. And, pray tell, who makes that determination?
Illegal aliens charge $10 cash outside homedp, thats equivalent to $13/hr for a legal alien. So $9 to 10 per hr is no longer a living wage. Its obvious. The article should have pointed out more details, like profits of company etc etc.
The lost income tax + the employer fees to that to get lost government revenue $10 x hours x ET's

the living people, failing to live, define it.
They can't afford to drive to work, can't afford to buy enough food, can't afford to pay for a home to live in even by renting.
Done in one.
Wages are too small vs costs of living therefore people are losing homes, food & will soon die without those SNAP / eebeetee thingies.
Also as looting rises to compensate for wages that are too small, or zero, that's another indicator. Looting, starving, homelessness.
Surely this wasn't a mystery to you before, was it?
The problem is not the minimum wage, the problem is a big inflation and bigger is coming, prepare for that. Or maybe I should name it a wealth ( or maybe health, so ironic ) effect, as commonly is being known.
You would be surprised what a real minimum wage is ones the dollar is removed from the reserve status as a currency, and the true labor cost starts to show it power in a naturally ( vs. artificially ) balanced system.
Maybe they stuff envelopes for a living?
How the fuck do you know what they are worth?
A vast majority of our workforce have inadequate education and a lack of skills necessary in todays world.
We should just pay everyone the same regrdless of skill and demand.
You fucking asswipe
Nice one, moonman. Off your meds today?
The vast majority of the workforce always had inadequate eduction and a lack of skills. That will never change.
But somehow we have to build a society where average people can live an average American lifestyle. Otherwise our society will crumble and slowly disintegrate before our eyes.
What do you think is going to happen when the whole generation who are in their 20s now and can't buy cars or houses or start families or save for the future reach their 40s and 50s?
