The "Obamacare Shock" - One California Employer's Terrifying True Story

My company, based in California, employs 600. We used to insure about 250 of our employees. The rest opted out. The company paid 50% of their premiums for about $750,000/yr.
Under obamacare, none can opt out without penalty, and the rates are double or triple, depending upon the plan. Our 750k for 250 employees is going to $2 million per year for 600 employees.
By mandate, we have to pay 91.5% of the premium or more up from the 50% we used to pay.
Our employees share of the premium goes from $7/week for the cheapest plan to $30/week. 95% of my employees were on that plan. Remember, we used to pay 50% now we pay 91.5% and the premiums still go up that much!!
The cheapest plan now has a deductible of $6350! Before it was $150. Employees making $9 to $10/hr, have to pay $30/wk and have a $6350 deductible!!! What!!!!
They can't afford that to be sure. Obamacare will kill their propensity to seek medical care. More money for less care? How does that help them?
Here is the craziest part. Employees who qualify for mediCAL (the California version of Medicare), which is most of my employees, will automatically be enrolled in the Federal SNAP program. They cannot opt out. They cannot decline. They will be automatically enrolled in the Federal food stamp program based upon their level of Obamacare qualification. Remember, these people work full time, living in a small town in California. They are not seeking assistance. It all seems like a joke. How can this be the new system?

OK Pinko, let's go through this step by step.
You have an expertise in widgets. There are three different kinds: widget A, widget B, and widget C. You can buy them from China for $11, $12, and $18, respectively.
You decide to set up a business making widgets. It takes $6, $7, and $11 in materials to make each type of widget. You have fixed costs of $1 per widget (for electricity, rates, water, etc). And each widget takes half an hour to make.
It takes varying degrees of expertise to make the different widgets; the more expensive the widget, the more complex it is to make one.
As an employer, you can afford to hire a worker to build widget A if you can pay him 2 x $11 - ($6 + 1 + profit). If you wish to make 15% profit on your materials, that would be 2 x ($11 - (6 + 1 + 1.05)) or $5.90 an hour. Now... would you work for $5.90 an hour? No... but a kid straight out of school with no experience or skills might, because he knows that as his skills develop, and he shows he can put in an honest day's work, he's likely to move up to more skilled work. And he's still living at home so his expenses are low. So you hire him.

If you wish to make 15% profit on your materials, that would be 2 x ($18 - (11 + 1 + 1.80)) or $8.40 an hour. Now... would you work for $8.40 an hour? No... but maybe the kid hired five years ago to build widgets for another manufacturer might. He's not living at home anymore but he's doing ok. So you hire him.
Then along comes President Pinko. He sees kid A earning $5.90 and he's outraged! Profits before people, he thunders! And sets the minimum wage to $6.50.
So what happens? You can't make Widget A at a profit anymore... so goodbye to the kid who makes them... because if you make these things at a loss you're putting the entire enterprise at risk... including the livelihoods of all your other staff.
Unemployment rises all over the state, for some reason. People are restless. President Pinko sees someone earning $7.60 and says the cost of living has risen! Let's make the minimum wage $8.00 an hour! A living wage!

People do not understand. The ACA is a diguised tax increase for all AMericans. Its simply to increase government revenues. It easier to pass than a 15% tax increase on your income. This is the decline of AMerican living standards creeping in.

I am not familiar with the specifics of Medi-Cal as I never worked with the California medical assistance system, but there are federal guidelines for each state medical assistance program, so there are many similarities between the various states programs (I am not always sure what is a federal mandate and what is specific to individual states, so things may be somewhat different in California). Also, I have fled the United States and have not been involved with the U.S. healthcare system since many of the Obamacare provisions have come into effect. But, there are several things that were true, when I was working to help medical service providers collect bills. First, Medi-Cal is the state program for Medicaid, not Medicare. As such, I do not believe your employees, who apply for Medi-Cal, will have to pay any deductibles (at least medical assistance recipients in the states that I am familiar with did not, prior to Obamacare). This will not stop medical service providers from billing for the deductibles. Your employees will still receive a bill; they just do not have to pay it; or at least that is the way it functioned in the states that I am familiar with. No medical service provider is going to volutarily tell a working Medicaid recipient that they do not have to pay the deductible unless specifically asked, however.
Also, almost all the states were moving toward some type of unified benefits system, varying based upon how they managed the federal benefits programs, usually at the county level, in which, if there is a unified application for all federal benefits: SNAP, section 8 housing, low-income home energy assistance, medical assistance, etc. As such, you employees should apply for every federal benefit to try to offset the rising cost of their insurance premiums.
Finally, I am very sorry that this law was inflicted on you. I am not sure what type of business you are in, but increasing your health costs from 750K to 2 million USD must be a terrible strain on your operation. I sincerely hope that you can continue to stay in business and employ these folk. You have my sincerest sympathy in contending with the horrible states of affairs in U.S. healthcare.

Several weeks ago, Hannity was doing one of his audience Obamacare shows.
A woman in the audiience blurted out a warning about California, saying that coverage was not healthcare. Now i can see what she meant.

It seems that $2 million is being paid by the company for insurance the employees cannot afford to use. It also seems that this is therefore deliberately designed to fail, to usher in single payer in California.

And I ask...did anyone look at the commercial software exchange platforms already written by Oracle and Microsoft to where a ton of integration code is already written versus trying to be a hero and use open source and write from the bottom up? There was no time for this and government contractors like to bid projects to where they get to write more code as it's more money in their pockets and as you have read in the news the sense of urgency here with major IT Infrastructure logic was nowhere to be found. Again that is why in 2009 (link below) I said Health IT would run Sebelius over and it has. You need that "data mechanics logic" to be able to "recognize" when you have a problem..she doesn't and I'm sure there was some pressure put on the IT folks to go along with her deadlines if they wanted to keep their jobs..

As Pelosi said, there was nothing in the ACA that required insurance companies to cancel policies. However, the ACA regulations mandate that every policy have maternity care and other items. Thus insurance companies cancelled policies.
Black is white, up is down. It depends on what the meaning of is, is.
Remember, raising the debt ceiling does not raise the debt, so there is no reason not to raise the debt ceiling. That is the kind of game that is being played.

I have recently seen several ObamaCare advocates telling skeptics that those who enroll will see lower costs. But of course such a claim deliberately ignores that the cost paid includes a subsidy, which is money that is taken from someone else or created out of thin air.

Maybe I am too math astute but this article sounds like a propaganda piece that contradicts itself. The poster claims that he used to pay 50% of the health insurance cost for 250 employees for a total of $750,000; that's $1.5 million/year. Under ACA his costs jumps up $2 million for 600 employees.
But his old pre-ACA plan the cost for insurance for 600 employees would come to $3,600,000 million(600 x $6,000). What am I missing?
If I was a doctor now, I would sell the Benz, the vacation home in Aspen and the McMansion now. ACA means no more frivolous doctor visits so the doctor can bilk the system for $10,000 to remove a wart.

Probably that the OLD plan was also a scam that didn't pay any benefits. What the anti socialist medical issurance people never talk about is that RomneyCare prevents scam health insurance policies, meaning those that are left cost the real amount of real insurance.
I also have some questions. I am not a fan of Obamacare, but these OMG stories are all adrenaline and no substance. You have 250 covered employees and 350 non-covered. How many are not covered because they have health care under their partner's insurance? You don't have to cover twice. If this is company insurance, aren't the company mandates delayed for a year? How do you know what will be offered next year? What type coverage have you compared to what you will recieve?

food stamp payments to subsidize insurance companies? corporate welfare gets funneled through individuals, a person pays $30 a month more for ACA, that person receives $30 a month in benefits, its a wash, in the event the SNAP benefits are larger than the ACA payment its a win for the worker. and when things get tough the first bill that individual defers is his ACA premium. kust like when the money ain't there you say fuck you to the mortgage company but you always pay your credit card bill. this is what happens to most young people who buy life insurance. eventually people are going to stop paying the premium or they'll quit and work under the table.
What's wrong with free food for $30 a week? And a $6350 deductable is not too bad if even a broken leg costs $25k to fix. It sort of means you are self insured except for major events. So $30 a week for all your food and free catastrophy insurance thrown in, a win win.Sure beats paying $250 a month for groceries.

When you raise standards on significant percent of health insurance policies across the country causing health insurance companies to increase their risk, health insurance cost will increase and discretionary cash will fall. Even though health insurance cost will rise, healthcare spending will not raise as fast because of supply constraints. The primary improvements in health outcomes came from 1) farming--getting consistent calories above minimum weekly requirements--2) sanitation--germ free water--3) more professional birthing environments--reduced mom-child mortality during delivery--4) safety improvements in work environment--worker mortality--, 5) antibiotics--reduced mortality from infections-- and 6) exercise and controlled calorie intake--in countries where obesity becomes a morbid condition.
Hospitals, surgery, nursing homes and pharmcotherapy have only a marginal impact on mortality. This is why USA spends significantly more per person than other developed countries when our health outcome profile is near bottom of the pack. The USA healthcare system was going to be TRANSFORMED by the market and would be much more efficient prior to Obamacare. Obamacare is going to destroy the American healthcare system because people can never make the tough decisions that the market can do in short order.

I don't know about propaganda, but your contention about eligibility appears to be correct. If I have done my arithmetic properly the minimum cutoff for being ineligible for a family of four appears to be about $14.27 per hour for a single full-time worker if this stuff is based on gross-pay:

Regarding the point in the main article, I think its author was correct to emphasize the point that people were being enrolled automatically, with no opt-out option [if this is true]. I think one of the last things we should do in the US, is put people on the social safety net programs, who don't want to be on them (regardless of eligibility).
