Guest Post: Sheeple: Why You Should Feel Sorry For Them

It is often said there only two kinds of people in this world: those who know, and those who don’t. I would expand on this and say that there are actually three kinds of people: those who know, those who don’t know, and those who don’t care to know. Members of the last group are the kind of people I would characterize as “sheeple.”
Sheeple are members of a culture or society who are not necessarily oblivious to the reality of their surroundings; they may have been exposed to valuable truths on numerous occasions. However, when confronted with facts contrary to their conditioned viewpoint, they become aggressive and antagonistic in their behavior, seeking to dismiss and attack the truth by attacking the messenger and denying reason. Sheeple exist on both sides of America's false political paradigm, and they exist in all social "classes". In fact, the "professional class" and the hierarchy of academia are rampant breeding grounds for sheeple; who I sometimes refer to as "intellectual idiots". Doctors and lawyers, scientists and politicians are all just as prone to the sheeple plague as anyone else; the only difference is that they have a bureaucratic apparatus behind them which gives them a false sense of importance. All they have to do is tow the establishment line, and promote the establishment view.
Of course the common argument made by sheeple is that EVERYONE thinks everyone else is blind to the truth, which in their minds, somehow vindicates their behavior. However, the characteristic that absolutely defines a sheeple is not necessarily a lack of knowledge, but an unwillingness to consider or embrace obvious logic or truth in order to protect their egos and biases from harm. A sheeple's mindset is driven by self centered motives.
So-called mainstream media outlets go out of their way to reinforce this aggressive mindset by establishing the illusion that sheeple are the “majority” and that the majority perception (which has been constructed by the MSM) is the only correct perception.
Many liberty movement activists have noted recently that there has been a surge in media propaganda aimed at painting the survival, preparedness and liberty cultures as “fringe,” “reactionary,” “extremist,” “conspiracy-minded,” etc. National Geographic’s television show “Doomsday Preppers” appears to have been designed specifically to seek out the worst possible representatives of the movement and parade their failings like a carnival sideshow. Rarely do they give focus to the logical arguments regarding why their subjects become preppers, nor do they normally choose subjects who can explain as much in a coherent manner. This is a very similar tactic used by the establishment media at large-scale protests; they generally attempt to interview the least-eloquent and easiest-to-ridicule person present and make that person a momentary mascot for the entire group and the philosophy they hold dear.
The goal is to give sheeple comfort that they are “normal” and that anyone who steps outside the bounds of the mainstream is “abnormal” and a welcome target for the collective.
It would appear that the life of a sheeple is a life of relative bliss. The whole of the establishment machine seems engineered to make them happy and the rest of us miserable. But is a sheeple’s existence the ideal? Are they actually happy in their ignorance? Are they truly safe within the confines of the system? Here a just a few reasons why you should feel sorry for them.
Sheeple Are Nothing Without The Collective
A sheeple gathers his entire identity from the group. He acts the way he believes the group wants him to act. He thinks the way he believes the group wants him to think. All of his “ideas” are notions pre-approved by the mainstream. All of his arguments and talking points are positions he heard from the media, or academia, and he has never formed an original opinion in his life. Without the group telling him what to do, the average sheeple is lost and disoriented. When cast into a crisis situation requiring individual initiative, he panics or becomes apathetic, waiting for the system to come and save him rather than taking care of himself. Sheeple are so dependent on others for every aspect of their personality and their survival that when faced with disaster, they are the most likely people to curl up and die.
Sheeple Crave Constant Approval From Others
Sheeple are not only reliant on the collective for their identity and their survival; they also need a steady supplement of approval from others in order to function day to day. When a sheeple leaves his home, he is worried about how his appearance is perceived, how his attitude is perceived, how his lifestyle is perceived and how his opinions are perceived. Everything he does from the moment his day begins revolves around ensuring that the collective approves of him. Even his acts of “rebellion” are often merely approved forms of superficial “individualism” reliant on style rather than substance. This approval becomes a kind of emotional drug to which the sheeple is addicted. He will never make waves among the herd or stand out against any aspect of the herd worldview, because their approval sustains and cements his very existence. To take collective approval away from him would be like cutting off a heroin junky’s supplier. To be shunned by the group would destroy him psychologically.
Sheeple Are Incapable Of Original Creativity
Because sheeple spend most of their waking moments trying to appease the collective, they rarely, if ever, have the energy or inclination to create something of their own. Sheeple do not make astonishing works of art. They do not achieve scientific discovery. They do not make history through philosophical or ideological innovation. Instead, they regurgitate the words of others and hijack ideas from greater minds. They remain constant spectators in life, watching change from the bleachers, caught in the tides of time and tossed about like congealed satellites of Pacific Ocean garbage from the after-wash of Fukushima. The destiny of the common sheeple is entirely determined by the outcome of wars and restorations waged by small groups of aware individuals — some of them good, some of them evil.
Sheeple Have No Passion
If you draw all of your beliefs from what the collective deems acceptable, then it is difficult, if not impossible, to become legitimately passionate about them. Sheeple have little to no personal connection to their ideals or principles; so they become mutable, empty and uninspired. They tend to turn toward cynicism as a way to compensate, making fun of everything, especially those who ARE passionate about something. The only ideal that they will fight for is the collective itself, because who they are is so intertwined with the survival of the system. To threaten the concept of the collective is to threaten the sheeple’s existence by extension.
Sheeple Are Useless
The average sheeple does not learn how to be self-reliant because it is considered “abnormal” by the mainstream to be self-reliant. The collective and the state are the provider. They are mother and father. Sheeple have full faith that the system will protect them from any and all harm. When violence erupts, they cower and hide instead of defending themselves and others. When large-scale catastrophe strikes, they either sit idle waiting for the state to save them or they join yet another irrational mob. They do not take proactive measures, because they never felt the need to learn how.
Consider this: Why do the mainstream and the people subject to it care if others prepare for disaster or end their dependency on the establishment? Why are they so desperate to attack those of us who find our own path? If the system is so effective and the collective so correct in its methodology, then individualists are hurting only themselves by walking away, right? But for the sheeple, successfully self-reliant individuals become a constant reminder of their own inadequacies. They feel that if they cannot survive without the system, NO ONE can survive without the system; and they will make sure that individualists never prove otherwise. “You didn’t build that” becomes the sheeple motto, as they scratch and scrape like spoiled children, trying to dismantle the momentum of independent movements and ventures in non-participation.
Sheeple Are Easily Forgotten
To live a life of endless acceptance is to live a life of meaningless obscurity. When one arrives at his deathbed, does he want to reflect on all of his regrets or all of his accomplishments? Most of us would rather find joy than sadness when looking back over our past. For sheeple, though, this will not be possible — for what have they ever done besides conform? What will they have left behind except a world worse off than when they were born? What will they have accomplished, but more pain and struggle for future generations? In the end, what have their lives really been worth?
I cannot imagine a torture more vicious and terrifying than to realize in the face of one’s final days that one wasted his entire life trying to please the plethora of idiots around him, instead of educating them and himself and molding tomorrow for the better. I cannot imagine a punishment more severe than to spend the majority of one’s years as a slave without even knowing it. I cannot imagine an existence more deserving of pity and remorse than that of the sheeple.

Having pity for someone is not the same as condoning their behavior. I feel bad for sheeple because as much as I despise their ignorance, nothing I could possibly do to them will ever match the hell they'll be going through in the near future.
Have you ever been to an abattoir or had to take the life of a "sheep". I have. There is no pity or remorse, that's not the way things work. When the time comes you do the deed quickly with as little emotion as possible. When the next crash comes, the sheeple won't know what hit em. The "boyz" will feast.

What's particularly maddening, are those who ACTIVELY & AGGRESSIVELY remain ignorant. These types can't stand facts & evidence. They can't stand logical arguments. They fight you verbally and when that doesn't work, (because they don't have the facts & logic to back their beliefs), . . . they withdrawl. At the heart of it they are COWARDS not just 'uninformed'.
They may be extremely brave in physical situations - some are soldiers, cops, etc But they are cowards when it comes to questioning their view of the world which they were indoctrinated with since they were infants. Some would rather die, than question their beliefs & truly think for themsleves.
I'll start feeling sorry for them when they stop voting people into power whose chief goal is to rape the rest of us.

i have thought about this alot and i agree with you, i feel sorry for them, sheeple are victims, victims of propaganda and manipulation from a young age, products of their environment.
if your parents believe and everyone around you believes and you go to school and are taught to believe, you are probably going to believe.
i was a sheeple once too, patriotic, believed in the welfare system, voting, believed the government was inheritently good and there was only a few bad apples, that taxes were there for the common good. the list goes on, but through an interest in economics history and philosophy i woke up.
and i feel lucky for it, and i do feel sorry for those around me who are just too dependant and ingrained in the system that they are incapable of entertaining anything outside of their core belief structure.
The case was not made why we should feel sorry for them. While they might suffer pangs of sorrow upon realizing their wasted life (but, then again they might not, insight doesn't exactly flourish in the sheeple) this suffering pales in comparison to the lives that were caused to become wasted, by the votes and other actions of said sheeple. Many millions of people live in suffering and misery because the sheeple, by their inertia or even opposition, doom attempts to improve the situation. That suffering outweighs, by far, the fleeting regrets of sheeple in their last days.
It's ironic and quite brilliant how the "Green" movement draws sheeple like a magnet by giving them a contrived sense of self-importance and superiority while at the same time completely subsuming their individuality and ability to think critically. Point that out to them, and they respond with righteous indignation, as the false immediacy of "global warming" gives them a passion that they don't find within their own empty souls. Agenda 21 is a masterwork of collectivist doublethink: a semi-religious bill of goods sold to vulnerable sheeple who are incapable of grasping how completely they're swindled.
While I agree that there are sheeple within the Green Movement (and in the Libertarian, and Neocon, and Progressive, and Communist, el al....) you appear to have bought the package of one of these groups of sheeple by being a climate change deniier. One only needs to look around to see the intense changes taking place all over the world. How much is being driven by humans is debateable, but not the fact that spewing immense amounts of toxic shit into the environmment will at some point tip the scale of even an entire planet.

Calling someone a "denier" is just an ad-hominem and tries to link that person with "holocaust denial" (that is people that have a different view of an historical event). People should not "believe" or "dis-believe", belief implies an act of faith. Man made global warming due to the addition of parts per million of C02 is just false; the models lack verisimilitude and all the predictions are falling flat on their face.
What you say in general about spewing out toxic substances is true enough though. Radiation, Sulfur Dioxide, particulate matter -at least these are real threats, unlike C02.
The *real* problem is that endless growth is required by our compound interest debt based monetary system. That is the root problem. If you really care about the environment you need to focus on the monetary system- chop the head off the snake. Anything else you do, will simply be a side issue, the needs of compound debt will *always* require greater exploitation of resources. You deal with one issue, the debt based system will find another area it can exploit. Being an activist for any other issue is therefore like spending the whole rest of your life in an endless game of "whack a mole" - groundhog day anyone?

Is adapting to "possible" climate changes more cost effective than handing Government vast new powers, we'll never know as the "Greens" have been pre-conditioned to accept more Government as the solution. This opened the door to not only domestic competition, but cheaper Freon from South American producers. However, by encouraging regulators to make Freon illegal, DuPont closed the door to competition. Simultaneously, DuPont introduced a patented substitute (HFC-134a). DuPont owns exclusive rights to HFC-134a — the only refrigerant authorized for use in new car air-conditioning systems.
Other smaller FREON alternative producers were banned by the EPA and played well into DuPont's hands.

Aristotle - It is the mark of an educated man to be able to entertain an idea, without necessarily accepting it.
I myself presently hold the position that Global Cooling (~1970), err, Global Warming (~2000-2009), ahem, Climate Change (~2009 to present) is false doctrine, based purely on doctored science, monetary interests, and religious zeal, particularly from its mostly uneducated disciples.
However, I reserve the right to change my position at a later date if new information becomes available that is compelling and conclusive.
The difference between a rational man, and a religious adherent is that they cannot entertain the possibility that they might be wrong. I most certainly could be wrong on my position on Global Cooling-Warming-Climate-Change-Any Weather Event of Interest Being Blamed on Anthropoegenic Influences, but present observations and data do not at all support that.
Lore, I'm not a climate scientist, so I don't have certainty about the validity of "global warming" or "anthropogenic climate change" and such. But I am certain that climate change denial has big corporate sponsors and looks an awful lot like the "science" that we used to see from the tobacco companies regarding the ill effects of smoking tobacco.
I'm also pretty sure that denying climate change suits the sheeple really well - they get to keep their SUV's, and live a life of physical ease and comfort. As long as they parrot the party line, they can be in denial about possible ill effects of digging up megatons of buried carbon and putting it back into the atmsosphere.
So is it possible that you could be wrong?
First off, why do you use the charged word "denial"? or the association to tobacco companies? Second, describe in detail the parallelism you supposedly see between these "big corporate sponsors" (again, more charged language - just another form of Ad Hominen)
Third. There is an insinuation buried in here. That is, if corporate interests (and trust me, I am under no illusion that corporations are anything but psychopathic in behavior) are threatened by an issue, and they are fighting that issue, then they must be wrong.
That is plainly not true. It is possible that corporate interests could be threatened by an issue, that the issue is in fact a fabrication, and that they are fighting that issue.

You're assuming the motive is consumerism (vs people not wanting to be bullshitted) You conclude that carbon causes climate change, but you make that conclusion part of your argument, which is driven by motive of consumerism driven by mass consumption of carbon. Maybe everyone here was 'awake' when they were still in diapers. That wasn't so with me and I imagine it wasn't the case with a lot of people here. As conditions in America degrade, even more people will be willing to listen when they didn't in the past.

You are forgetting an important thing. Most sheeple are people that are unprepared. Thus they become liabilities, not assets. It is the REMAINING SURVIVING sheeple that may become allies. The rest are those mass mobs that knock down your door to steal your food because they have none.
One can forgive for personal failures but those that fail must also face those consequeces of failure. Otherwise, you are nothing but an enabler for further failure - that is the true gift.
Trust me, I understand this. My point was to first evaluate and not paint everyone with my perceptions. That is the essence of mob mentality - both on my part and that of the sheep.
It will be a fine line as far as the consequences, not a broad brush.

There are different kind of sheeple: Economic sheeple, Political sheeple, Religious sheeple.
Some were raised as sheeple and never had a chance, others became sheep voluntarily and gladly, and a few decided they were merely put in the sheep pen, but were something else altogether and busted out.
The real oddities are the sheep who bark like dogs or wolves, but still graze with the herd.

I have to agree with the article but I think it is a very dangerous road you travel, when you start sorting people into groups and labelling those groups. Some of those groups will inevitably end up in a relocation/re-education camp of some sort. You might start from the viewpoint of "we need a better system" and end up with "please enter the 'showers' in single file..."
The article isn't labeling specific groups, it's labeling behavior. It's perfectly reasonable to be discriminating against destructive behavior. We don't label any particular person a "sheeple", they cast themselves in that role through their actions and attitudes.
Speaking as a member of the professional class, I must admit there are numerous sheeple. I have often wondered why and the best explanation I can come up with is a universal lack of adversity in their lives. They come from middle to upper middle class, mostly professional families. They live in McMansions with manicured landscaping that are in crime free neighborhoods. They are aware of the hardship of others but it's more a discussion over cocktails at a party rather than a true empathy. They have their petty complaints but life over all is quite good.
I was on the path to be one myself when at a young age was suddenly thrown into poverty. I remember one time my brother and I weren't sure we we going to make it because there was only a bottle of ketchup in the apartment. When the largest wildfire in California history was barreling down on me I had to face the fact I was on my own and no one was coming to help that I better figure out what to do or burn up. More and more I have come to realize my adversity which was looked upon as bad was, in fact, my way out of complacency and laziness to a world of independence and self sufficiency. When you take nothing for granted, you tend to prepare for a more uncertain future. You appreciate and are grateful for all you have because at any moment they may be gone.
Being a sheeple means you are living a very narrow parochial life. It is inherently self centered. I believe this is why it is so contemptible to those who are awake.

I left the USSA 3 years ago, built a self-sufficient place in the extreme boonies, and only have direct human contact when I fly 200km ~ 300km to pick up supplies once every month or three.
Was it easy? No. The planning was a bitch. The building was a bitch, even though mostly I was just overseeing the individuals I contracted to help me. But somehow it was also very satisfying to see come together. The payoff? No predators. No parasites. No sheeple. My only indirect human contact is with the individuals I collaborate with on a large project (where we all work independently, mostly in different locations).
My point? Forget the human species! Forget the world. The predators have the planet and species totally under their control. You have no hope to change that, so don't waste your life trying to. What you can do is... live an honest, ethical, productive, benevolent, independent life. And if you take every effort to avoid everything you complain about, you can mostly achieve that, though it does take quite a bit of effort to get started. And if you want to "do it in spades" like I did, admittedly you need savings (my rather complete self-sufficient implementation cost about $300K). But no need to go that far.
What makes the process vastly easier is to... move to the boonies, if not extreme boonies. If you have little savings, the best compromise is probably near a tiny little town that is a long way from other towns of any significant size (thousands). There you will find that pretty much everyone else wants everyone to "mind their own business", and you can essentially, if not entirely, avoid anything "official". You'll need to produce something (grow crops, raise animals, operate a website that generates revenue, run some kind of internet business (design websites)).
But the very best is to produce something real, physical, and something you can trade with people near you for the goods they produce. Learn to live and enjoy a simple life! By the way, this can be a trick. Many folks who do this initally find that ignoring all the news and noise that bothers them now... leaves them with such a calm, peaceful, untroubled life that... they get bored! Hahaha. I'm not kidding! So hopefully you love to read, or have some interest you can pursue when you're not taking care of your crops or animals or machine-shop or whatever you do to produce goods to trade for other goods.
What is interesting about ZH is... there are lots of good people here, and used to be even more. Perhaps the best of them, most of whom vanished from ZH, have done what I just proposed above... abandoned the Titantic, rowed far away, and stopped thinking about the sheeple who will suffer and drown.
What many of the better folks at ZH need to do is... make their plans, then execute. And don't look back. I think someone may be a sheeple or not depending on the subject. Sometimes it may be too difficult to face the truth about a matter when confronted with the evidence. For example, 9/11. There are many more sheeple on this topic than perhaps NSA spying. This is because if you see that our own government attacked us, then it makes you look at everything they do differently. It's a hard reality for many to face.
On the topic of creativity: many, or even most, artists are sheeple.
The truth is either scary, infathomable, or boring to them. Their denial of truth is more passive however: they don't get angry when faced by ideas that conflict with their own. They're more likely to smile and ask "Really? So what will you do?".
I suspect that there are very few unconscripted artists on any given battlefield.
