The Amazing Disappearance Of Gold From The American Psyche

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Simon Black of Sovereign Man blog,

In George Orwell’s seminal work 1984, there’s a really great scene early in the book between Winston (the main character) and Syme, a low-level functionary at the Ministry of Truth.

Syme is working on the 11th Edition of the Newspeak Dictionary, and he explains to Winston how the Ministry of Truth is actually removing words from the English vocabulary.

In Newspeak, words like -freedom- have been struck from the dictionary altogether, to the point that the mere concept of liberty would be incommunicable in the future.

I thought about this scene recently as I was testing out Google’s new Ngram Viewer tool.

If you haven’t seen it yet, Google has digitized over a million books that were printed as far back as 1500, and they’ve made the contents searchable within their own database.

The Ngram Viewer allows you to search for particular keywords. And you can see over time how prevalent the search terms were for particular years.

Out of curiosity, I searched for the term “gold” in English language books starting in 1776.

As one would expect back in the 18th and 19th centuries when gold was actually considered money, the instances of the word ‘gold’ favored prevalently in English language books at the time.

The trend continued into the early part of the 20th century.

But then something interesting happened in the mid-1930s. The use of the word ‘gold’ in English language books reached its peak… and began a steep, multi-decade decline.

1 The amazing disappearance of GOLD from the American psyche

Further investigation shows that the peak actually occurred in 1933. And as any student of gold in modern history knows, 1933 was the same year that the President of the United States (FDR) criminalized the private ownership of gold.

It remained this way for four decades. And by the time Gerald Ford repealed the prohibition on gold ownership, the concept of gold being money had been permanently struck from the American psyche, just as the Orwellian Newspeak dictionary had done.

By the mid-1970s (and through today), people have become readily accepting of the idea that money was nothing more than pieces of paper conjured at will by central bankers.

The good news is that, according to Google’s data, there seems to be slight uptick in the number of instances of the word ‘gold’ in English language books over the last 10-years or so.

No doubt, this probably has a lot to do with gold’s seemingly interminable rise relative to paper currency.

One can hope that the trend will hold… that more people will wake up to the reality that the central-bank controlled fiat currency system is a total fraud.

Simon should find out the prevalance of the word "cheddar*" in popular music.

If you pull yourself back from the gold story, and every reason why it should rise and the dollar should decline, you see how high the stakes are. Go walk around a US embassy or a military installation and you will feel how much is to be lost for the USA.
When the USSR collapsed it was bad, but they were out of the world monetary system. If the dollar collapse's the USA will not function. It barley functions today with 1T in deficits.

Americans are the easiest people in the world to brainwash  Look at the number of people who view Obama, Trump, Dimon or Icahn as heroes instead of crooks.  Look at the number of people who watch network TV which is pure propaganda in the US.

Besides, it you consistently attack gold and silver with HFT computers, people get the message

As they say in Hollywood: "No one has ever lost money underestimating the intelligence of the American people."

Yeah, Japan did real well with their estimations of the Americans in WWII. All humans are defective, period. The whole us against them thing is sooooooo passe. All races and nationalities of humans have their Obama's, Dimon's, etc. Just read a little world history. Villians come in all shades and stripes. Pointing fingers and placing blame based on color or creed is part of the problem and a very big part of TPTB's strategy. So, who is brainwashed again?

We better learn it again quickly - China is Fed Up with QE and US Dollars:

US Dollar And Gold - PBOC Says No Longer in China’s Interest to Increase Reserves

  We are following the groundbreaking changers coming out of China after The 3rd Plenum and PBOC drops another shell-bomb on the US Dollar today. We are witnessing the end of US Dollar as the Reserve Currency of Choice now. Who will be buying all these US Treasuries after that? How can FED Taper now? We can be assured about much higher interest rates with very far reaching implications for the economy and the U.S. fiscal budget.   Timing of this release is very interesting - just yesterday Gold was killed after the release of FOMC minutes. We are entering the new dramatic stage of the Currency Wars, when China picks the old Austrian economics truth - strong currency means strong country. How long Gold Smashing can keep it down with COMEX running on fumes and record high leverage?

Never the less....

5 years ago, it was pretty hard to find a bullion dealer in my country... I could only buy it on the internet.

Now there are 3 big once in my city and they have branches all over the country.

5 years ago, if you typed in bullion gold or silver, you would probably have been directed to a American site.

Now there are hundreds of European sites.

The demand is growing and my accountant an my notary all agree with me that the money needs to get out. In gold, in Switzerland, in real estate or whatever as long as it's not in a bank.

BUT!!! All these people who are awake... are over 45 years old.

Young kids below 30 totally don't care. Gold and silver... empty eyes.
They also don't make the kind of money to worry about all this crap.

no, I'm 36 years old.

No, the reason is that they don't make enough to feed their spending habbits. Even if they made twice they wouldn't make enough to feed their spending habbits.
Young kids don't think about tomorrow and don't save any money. Money will always be there for them. They lacked the education about thinking about tomorrow. only today counts and tomorrow is to big of a concept.
That's why young kids perform so bad in business these days.

You know, From day one that I started to make money, I put it in funds and lived of the 10% it made. the first years where meager and after a couple of more yours I didn't have to work anymore. I invested and invested and a decade later I had 3 appartments and a villa, and a nice car and savings in the bank.

Young kids that work 5 years don't have shit, don't save at all, but crappy shit... Damn...

And you know what?
have you seen a well of 45 year old person and a 45 poor person? You'll notice who will have a really higher chance to live untill 90 and who not.

Money buys happyness my young friend. Indepence, that's what money gives you and when you don't have it, it fills your mind.

Time flies kid, and when you think "i'll do that tomorrow' you'll have missed it all.

I travelled the world 3 times over before I was 30 and I'm traveling it 3 times over it again. I got everything I want but... I already had everything I wanted 6 years ago.

Don't forget to aquire what you want now or you'll never have it and it's a have and have not world you're living in.
And the have nots go sit in a tent and call them the 99%
Me... I never wanted to be part of the 99%
I always wanted to be different.

What did you already do with your life?
Do you have a plan? How far are you in your plan?
Faillure in a plan is option, that shows you tried and that's worth as much. As long as you did something.

As long as you don't sit on your lazy ass... telling yourself... I've gt time....
because time flies kid. And if you don't understznd it yet, that means you're wasting it and you'll be sorry when you meet the real world.

In te end, it's all up to you. You can always blame others but others don't care about that.

Elmer Barnes' Historical Revisionism as the Road to Peace is a great read and just the title alone speaks volumes.  He has a lot of interesting stuff in there, like a citation to Stephen Spender who said that Aldous Huxley's intended title for 1984 was "1948," but he had to reverse the digits to make the title less inflammatory.  1984 was published in 1948.

Historical Revisionism needs to be added to that list, but it's a bit confusing because it's not what it seems to be at first glance.

After the two world wars there were very heated debates about how to handle the lies told to the public to justify the loss of blood and treasure.

Elmer Barnes was the key figure who probably made an unfortunate choice in calling the effort to correct errors in history "historical revisionism" and its practitioners "historical revisionists."

The term almost seems like a Newspeak euphemism, which was exactly the type of mind control he was railing against.  Very ironic.

What Barnes was referring to was the correction of outright errors in the historical record which result primarily from historians relying on what is published in newspapers and magazines, and we all know how (un)reliable they are.

What if Barnes had called his efforts Historical Correction as practiced by Historical Correctors?  Would it have then become a "legitimate" part of the historical discourse in academia?

The highfalutin and euphemistically obscure Historical Revisionism/Revisionists has faded away in the sands of history, to be replaced by the overtly epithetic Conspiracy Theory/Theorist formulation.

In the 50th anniversary of JFK's murder and coverup by the government he headed, let's all say a prayer for all those who have lost their lives and their freedoms due to the evil actions of the 4th Reich, the most evil empire in the history of the world.

P.S.  It's extremely difficult to live in a world where everyone in "real life" is a walking dead zombie.  Please email me at the address in my PGP public key under my Bio here.  I don't want to know your handle here, if that presumption is what has been keeping people here from emailing me.  I won't bite.

I would call it "History" as practiced by "Historians". If you do not go back to original sources you are not a historian. Quoting books, newspapers etc is not historical research.

Interesting subject.  Plus their choice for describing gold "barbarous relic".

In a society that values new, in effect a iNew society, the economics profession has declared all out war against Gold.  It is pivotal to "modern" economics survival

Talk to a 20 something. Say:

"As good as gold." or "The gold standard." "Golddigger" or "All that glitters is not gold." - "A tongue of gold." - "~that lays the golden egg." - "A heart o gold." -
"a golden opportunity"

You can see the odd look flicker over their face. Might as well say - "Groovy man!" or "Twenty-three skidoo." - You are speaking from the grave to them.

After reading Simons article, it got me to pondering that since most content today is digitally stored and dependent upon search engines & retrieval systems, how long will it be before history gets scrubbed.

Nah .... search engines wouldn't climb into bed with governments and do something creepy, or would they?

I hope they wake up the fraud of paying interest to the owners of the fed for the creation of the fraud of fiat currency.

I fear that upon awakening they will fall under the spell of the apparently created by no one bitcoin electronic nonsense which has the potential to be co-opted into a tool for societal control more nefarious than even a fiat cash society.

Inmate of the open-air prison run by lunatics and populated almost entirely by zombies is seeking pen-pal because God gave Eve to Adam … and Aldous Huxley gave someone to Winston Smith.

For mutual support in these trying times, am seeking fellow non-zombie intelligent, open-minded, and well-informed inmate for discussing topics of mutual interest, such as:

  1. Both actual and notional nuclear accidents, and nuclear technology of all sorts;

  2. Historical Revisionism of WW1 and WW2 per Harry Elmer Barnes, 1889–1968;

  3. John Kenneth Galbraith as a two-handed economist;

  4. Bankers v. The People going way back to Andrew Jackson;

  5. contemporary Capitalist Crisis as predicted by Karl Marx;

  6. 1984, Alice in Wonderland, and The Wizard of Oz as works of history;

  7. Newspeak, shunning, strawman, etc. as effective social controls;

  8. as island of sanity, albeit sorely lacking collegiality; and

  9. identifiable weaknesses in the prison system which might allow its escape.
