I noticed no difference.

Leave it shut down, expand the shutdown.

We might see this the end of January.

Shut it all down and let it die, we'll be better for it.

I'd like to see a "lottery" for federal workers ...

Every month for a year the president pulls out of a hat (fishbowl , whatever) two slips of paper with numbers from 00 through 99... if that number matches the last 2 digits of your SSN you are fired immediately and without recourse.... the terminated employee gets a full year of pay and as we all know Federal Employees are the absolute smartest and best workers on the planet they should have no problems adjusting to the real world.

This should have an immediate demoralizing effect and therefore we get an added bonus of reduced output (read as "new regulations")

When they start to complain then we cut departments starting with energy , education and the EPA.

I can cheer you up, Knukles. Arne Duncan, the head of Dept of Education, said that the best thing that happened to public schools in New Orleans was Hurricane Katrina. Now if he can just borrow Bush's hurricane machine he can fix the public schools in the rest of the country! Something to look forward to IMO.

Public schools aren't teaching our kids anything they need to learn, anyway.

Their only function is babysitting and govt jobs.

I think it's because this isn't pointing out why a shutdown was ok, or generally wasn't felt by most, it's attempting to show why a shutdown was bad and that it shouldn't happen again...i.e. pro-nanny state propaganda.

In reality not much of the govt was shut down, but the administration attempted to make people think that there was a lot that was closed in an attempt to pull pressure from constituents toward their representatives to agree to the administration's demands.

It's all hokum IMO, I would bet that there's so much duplication and overlap in jobs and that no one has ever done an audit of what people do and whether there are significant redundancies in the system. It's bloated beyond belief, it can't account for what it spends and can't produce a budget. Any business that was run in the manner of this govt would fail miserably....and fast.

Reagan's deficit spending had a purpose - end the cold war - and it worked.

He/they then devised a long-term deficit reduction plan that brought the US back to a balanced annual budget... and this plan was dutifully upheld by Bush & Clinton (to their credit) thus the balanced/surplus fed. budget levels that were achieved mid-way through Clinton's administration.

You are entitled to your opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts...

Years ago a libertarian writer suggested a federal agency that would parasitize the parasites.

It would cost-benefit analyze departments and programs, ending those not working, and receive a percentage of the money saved for its own budget.

USPS being self-funded is a bit like the military being self-funded.  Neither one was begun with the idea of making a profit or being self sustaining.   The military demolishes structures and the USPS destroys packages.

One of the biggest benefits of the forever stamps is the elimination of the need for the one cent make up stamps.  Find an old-time window clerk and ask her if she misses the people coming in for a one cent stamp.  The only other person I know of who doesn't like the forever stamps is John McCain.

Sat, 11/23/2013 - 12:14 | 4183491 RockyRacoon

Correct.  The labor savings alone offsets the "loss" of revenues.  The gob of stamps on the envelopes with the make-up rates also confused and clogged the facer/canceler machinery, requiring hand-processing of zillions of envelopes.

Aid workers in the field,U.S.Information Agency, lots of these charitable NGO's and journalists are filthy with the SPOOKS of CIA and MI5 etc. This puts at risk the legitimate workers, who depend on their status as neutrals.

My eyes were opened to this when I read that the aircraft in the U2 incident was a NOAA cover.NOAA is the forerunner for NASA.Ergo,NASA is at least partially an arm of the CIA and has been all these years.

The funny/tragic/ironic part of the story is that because the a/c burned a highly distilled form of kerosene ($300/gal),and the altitude flown, the engine was prone to flameouts. One aircraft radioed that he was ejecting, and he pushed the auto-destruct timer (30 seconds or 0 seconds?) and his transmission ended instantly. The pilots started grumbling amongst themselves,"Psst, don't hit the button!".I have often wondered if the auto-destruct unit was contracted to a CIA front operation.I mean it was all Cold War stuff, fifty years ago,but still....

And then there is the KAL007 operation but I won't bore you with that here.Still, using civilians as Spooks without their knowledge?

NOAA and NASA share a lot of each other's satellites.  The remote sensing community is comparatively small and very incestuous.  If you get into remote sensing in university, you'll probably later know many people at the NRO, NGIA as well, along with UKUSA-AU-NZ spooks.
