How Manny Pacquiao Became The Philippino POMO

Tyler Durden's picture

Many have wondered why one of the greatest boxers of our generation, Philippines' Manny Pacquiao, has not retired gracefully into hero-dom following his loss to Marquez late last year. For a fighter - it could be pride, ego, or, sadly, lack of funds. In Pacquiao's case it is none of the above, we suspect as a politician, the diminutive boxer has realized the wealth effect-creating impact of his victories of the nation - which at no other time in history needs something positive to reflect on. While in the US, investors have POMO to almost guarantee an up-day in stocks, in the Philippines, stocks rise 73% of the time after a Pacquiao win (compared to 52% average) and rise a stunning 0.5% (against a 0.04% average). Pacquiao is 6-1 on to win against Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios on Saturday (86% likely to win); is there a Philippines ETF?

“Pacquiao’s victory in the ring creates a nationwide euphoria that things will get better -- positive sentiment, positive investment,” said Jonathan Ravelas, chief market strategist at BDO Unibank. “A victory by Pacquiao will help lift the Philippine spirit at a time when it’s facing the impact of calamities. The nation definitely needs to hear something positive right now.”

With MMA does anyone still even watch boxing ?

Come to think of it, there is a definite correlation, boxing is ALMOST as fixed as the PM and stock markets....

Nope. Been watching non-calls and phantom flags for over 45 years. As long as The Book comes in the black, it's all good.

With Don King and boxers throwing fights, does anyone still care unless it is a big name card? That last Tyson fight kinda took the wind out of the boxing sail for good IMHO and thank God MMA was there to run with it. Glad I got on board when it was early and see Gracie, Tito, Chuck and Rampage when it was still in the incubator.

What's that again about efficient markets? Oh, never mind. Keep buying and convince yourself that there is some usefulness other than gambling to modern day stock markets.

At least the Pacman fights well to create euphoria for all in the Phillipines  Our phony boom-boom Bernanke punches a few numbers on his computer to create euphoria for the 0.1% at the expense of the rest.

Alas with every passing fight his brain suffers more trauma ultimately leading to severe brain damage. Unfortunately with POMO the brain damage is inflicted not on them but on us. Or something...

Mayweather can fight anyone and rack up a victory.... but until he fights Pac Man he ain't solidfying jack. and time is running out. Why do you continue to punish the fans? The second biggest disappointment only behind the Holyfield and Tyson fight at their peak that never was.

I remember reading about a direct correlation between women's skirt length and stock market performance when I was a kid.  Then a serious economic treatise on "animal spirits" when I got older. People are weird.

The Philippines are also a good place to immigrate. You can live there permanently and operate a business without penalty as a non-citizen. All that is required is a $10,000 Bond in a Philippine Bank. That $10,000 Bond is for the cost of prosecution and deportation if you commit a serious crime. As a Bonded Immigrant you have all the rights of a Citizen except the ability to hold Public Office and Vote.

TBTF will buy a throw of the fight

and short the ETF's index--or quickly

create a Reverse Philippines and

frontrun long.

Those who call them out will be

stoned or put on a list.

The Congresspeople overseeing it

will self-deal, and their friends will

privatize and pass losses to the

taxpayer where that hasn't already

been done.
