Guest Post: Barack Obama And The "Isms"

Tyler Durden's picture

Originally posted at Monty Pelerin's World,

“Capitalism is not things; it is a mentality.”

So stated Ludwig von Mises in a talk in mid 1952 in a series of lectures entitled Marxism Unmasked which he gave at the San Francisco library.

Mises provided examples that illustrated this mentality or its lack. One pertained to India (my emboldening):

Nehru [Jawajarlal Nehru, 1889 - 1964] has been quoted as saying ”We want to give every encouragement to private industry. We won’t expropriate private businesses for at least ten years — perhaps not even that soon.”

You cannot expect people to invest if you tell them that you will expropriate some time in the future. Therefore, conditions are much worse now than when the British were there. Then you could still hope that the British would remain and that they would not expropriate your business.

Nehru had little understanding of capitalism and its requisites. He liked the things it made possible, but not the conditions necessary for their achievement. Barack Obama, at least in this respect, is a modern-day version of Nehru.

The Other “Isms”

Marxism, Socialism, Facism and virtually all other isms except capitalism are anti-economic.

Economics does not have all the answers, nor is economics a precise science. Those who pretend otherwise are generally responsible for the quackery that is passed off as economics. Economics is about human behavior. It is a positive approach to dealing with the human condition.

Isms are normative. They imagine human behavior in some ideal sense, according to some dreamer-in-chief. Behavior modification is always necessary in order to move to this “perfect” condition. The premise that it would be a better world if only people behaved differently underlies every one of the isms.

Economics, to the extent that it is science,  is “wertfrei.” Its purpose is to understand and explain human behavior. A narrower purpose, one that has captured the profession, is how human behavior impacts markets and market transactions. Economics should not not try to effect human behavior, but to explain it. It does, however understand how incentives and disincentives affect behavior.

All political visions involve the improvement of man and/or society by changing the nature of man. Social planners want to “improve” and “perfect” matters according to their ideas of what these terms imply. Little commonality exists regarding utopian visions. One commonality between these utopian ideas does exist — the universal failure of all such schemes.

There is no better way to understand the wisdom “the perfect is the enemy of the good” than to study the historical wreckage that has resulted from trying to “perfect” society.

Every scheme requires the use of force to make people change behavior to something they otherwise would not do. The force, misery and deaths associated with these schemes exceed those from wars. Stalin, Hitler, Mao were leaders in the death count, but there were numerous others whose names are less known. Their methods and devastation were comparable.

Barack Obama and The “Isms”

President Barack Obama is not a capitalist. That is obvious. What “ism” best describes him is not.

Most people probably do not think Barack Obama is a Marxist. Barack Obama does not speak of himself as a Marxist, but he was, based on what little is known of his early life. His parents, grandparents, mentors and friends believed in Marxism. Barack has admitted to choosing his friends on that basis.

I suspect Obama is a Marxist, but will not use such an unacceptable term to describe himself. In politics appearance is what matters and words are charged. “Liberalism” (a co-opted term) is less damaging than Marxism, but it has become so stigmatized that political marketeers have switched to the less known and as yet not fully discredited term “progressive.”

To political opponents, a progressive is an extreme leftist or perhaps even a Marxist. But labels are meaningless. Deeds, not marketing tags, are what matter. On that basis, Obama appears to be very close to a Marxist. The argument is moot, however. Does it matter whether Nehru was Marxist or merely a Socialist? To quote one of the next presidential aspirants, “at this point, what difference does it make?”

Obama’s Nehru Moment

Barack Obama’s concept of capitalism is similar to Nehru’s. He doesn’t understand capitalism. He believes it is physical things like machines, tools, factories and wealth. These result from capitalism, but capitalism depends on freedom and individuals pursuing their own interests. If you remove these conditions, the machines, tools, factories and wealth diminish or vanish.

Nehru talked about expropriation. Obama talked about “sharing the wealth” with Joe the Plumber:

And I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.

The difference between expropriation and “sharing the wealth” is measured in degrees. Nehru was willing to confiscate everything, at least with respect to foreign investment, and foolish enough to announce it. Obama unwittingly expressed his intended predation, although did not define it. He clearly communicated his willingness to confiscate more (in the form of taxes) than was currently being confiscated. He didn’t limit the confiscation to foreigners. Nor did he specify the amount.

Confiscation need not be total to destroy an economy.

The Incorrect Assumption

Capitalism, as Mises pointed out, is a state of mind and an environment that allows men to pursue their own self-interest and betterment. This environment is responsible for the growth in per capita income and wealth that characterizes capitalist countries.

Statists (and many non-Statists) suffer from an erroneous assumption that an economy performs two functions — production and distribution. Pedagogically, that is true although the two functions are not independent of one another. Assuming this independence does great damage.

The production of wealth and the distribution of wealth are are interdependent. The idea that you can alter the distribution of wealth and not affect its production is naive and wrong.

Work, by definition, is not something enjoyed. That is why people must be paid in order to engage in it. When the rewards for working are reduced, you get less work and output. Raising taxes in order to “redistribute the wealth” is the same as cutting wages or income for productive activity. It is an expropriation in the same sense (although not total) as Nehru proposed in India. It has the same effects. It reduces effort and output. It causes decisions to not be made. A country is made poorer than it otherwise would be by its mere suggestion.

Government cannot change the distribution of wealth without impacting the production of it. This simple fact is either unknown or ignored by the Obama Administration. Everything done by Obama produces adverse effects on the standard of living in this country. More regulation raises costs and reduces incentives for producers. Forced medical care raises the costs and lowers the wages of workers. Deficit spending necessitates higher future taxes which means lower returns on investments and investments not made.

The consequences should be obvious and play out in our economy:

  • There is no economic recovery.
  • Businesses, especially small ones, have laid off employees or reduced their positions to part-time in order to avoid the onerous costs of ObamaCare.
  • Labor participation rates are disgracefully low.
  • Un-doctored unemployment statistics are in double-digits.
  • Business expansion is deferred or canceled in light of the uncertainty regarding future regulations and tax rates.
  • More people are dependents of the government than ever before.
  • Government is bankrupting itself in an effort to hide these effects.

This partial list could be greatly expanded, but there is no need to go on.

The policies of our version of President Nehru have effectively expropriated our future and the future of our children.

"Work, by definition, is not something enjoyed."

That theory leaves out the mindset of people or a people
that excel in engineering . They enjoy what they do and without they would not be that good or the best.

Economic theory to this day is based on the Anglo-Saxon view
that the wealth of nations should be shared among their peers. No mention of sharing and distributing the produce, just sharing and distributing the wealth. Pure colonial
wishful thinking.

Get a life, get an economy money changers that really gives purpose to people that produce something useful.

While one can - to a limited degree - argue the accuracy of that statement, too many libertarians go "tin-foil-hat whiny" by saying that there was no difference between (for example) Terry McAuliffe and Ken Cuccinelli (Virginia Governorship). I write nitwits like that off as paleo-anarchist imbeciles.

In the same vein of the question, "have you ever gotten a job from a poor man?", one can reasonably ask, "has a politician ever been funded primarily by poor people?"

Yes!!!  It is time to put this idiotic argument to bed once and for all.  There are only two forms of government:

1)People on top, gov. on bottom-  This is what the US Founding Fathers tried their level best to create and pass down.

2)Government on top, people on bottom-  You can call this Marxism, Neo-feudalism, etc., etc.  Does it matter if the foot in the boot on your neck belongs to a commie or a fascist?

Tue, 11/26/2013 - 15:20 | Link to Comment midtowng

That shows that you don't understand the difference between the various ideologies.

Marxism by its very definition is the People on Top.

That's why communism, as it was practiced, wasn't marxism. Lenin and Mao took "short-cuts". They decided that the people couldn't be trusted to do what was necessary so they would force them. That's why there are terms Leninism and Maoism.

As for the difference between communism and fascism, the difference is who's boot is on your neck. In fascism it'll be the boot of large corporations (much like today). I communism it'll the boot of politicians.

People on the top? Whose on the bottom?

More people, of course.

The people revolt, tear down everything, leave a mess and don't have a clue what they revolted against.  So they back someone else to take care of it for them.

Self-Government is hard and does not really scale well beyond small groups.

Especially for the United Sheeple of America.

Because in Communism, the politicians are "The People"...with their boots on themselves?!?

You ever heard Yogi Berra's comment, "In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice.  In practice, there is."?

Well, while there *may* be an academic difference between Fascism and your understanding of "Marxism", in practice both National Socialism and Fascism ring in harmony.

And please don't try to sell anyone on "there's no connection between Socialism and Marxism."

You might as well say the "Communist Manifesto" had nothing to do with Communism.

Tue, 11/26/2013 - 15:17 | Link to Comment midtowng

You are right that national socialism and fascism ring in harmony...because they are the same thing.

However, that means nothing in the current context. Just to give you one example that you will understand: in fascism large corporations will run the country. In communism there will be no large corporations.

If that doesn't mean anything to you then you don't understand the concept of power.

As for the communist manifesto, it described a world that wasn't anywhere close to what Lenin and Mao put into place. To say one is the other is like saying Adam Smith capitalism is much like today's capitalism.

My counter:  Suppose Obama is a marxist.  He knows people won't go for that, still.  They also won't go for a goose-stepping fascism.  What he does is use the softness of socialism, in whatever strain, to build government control when possible, corporate control when not.  In every segment, power and control are being moved up away from the people to either corporations or the actual state above them.  That is the central truth to the various -isms, centralized control.

All we need is for a financial earthquake that takes out the banks (central or globalist?) and wrecks the economy.  In rides the marxist hero.  Call it a bailout or takeover or expropriation, the government ends up with all the marbles and the guy on top calls all the shots.  At this point a whatever-ism is no different than having a king.

Want to see an -ism that turned into a kingdom recently?  North Korea, Cuba, Syria...

Touchy-feely multikulti humanism is merely repackaged Christianity minus Divinity. This accounts for its popularity among the formerly Christian West. Unfortunately, it is a formula for permissiveness, transgression and debasement. Minus the divine, no principle is absolute, no standards can be upheld, no tradition can be defended. One must "love" everyone, no matter how depraved or hostile. This recipe for pathological altruism has severely weakened Western Civilization.

Erich Fromm is marginally better than the rest of the Frankfurt School, but the end is the same: cultural obliteration.

And Capitalism doesn't have all the answers either, but it's the best damn system in the history of this planet yet to provide freedom, choice, prosperity, etc.  It lets people or businesses fail, but allows those who have failed to learn from the experience and to come back wiser and stronger next time, or else they just may fail again.  But at least they can keep trying and hopefully there won't be any interference from some government scumbag.

Every other system lies about Capitalism because those systems are devised and run by deviant, criminal, sociopaths, who only want to have power and control over anyone and anything they possibly can.  It's because of those kinds of people that Capitalism has been destroyed like a healthy body riddled with cancer.

Honest people who have ideas and create things for whatever reason and who then produce those things or provide a service are what drives Capitalism.  As long as they're left alone and not badgered, harassed, taxed, and made victims of gangster criminals, the system works out very well.

But it's all that shit caused by the criminal scum who only want to leach onto those who are successful that cause Capitalism to fail.  The Socialist mind is the most rotten thing there is.  They bash the hard work of others in order to gain power granted to them by the lazy and weak, so that they can steal from the makers and give to the takers.

If you look at the top of the Socialist pyramids you only find those who are the most ciminally inclined sociopaths that get off on power and control over others...stealing their productive energy and ability like scum-sucking vampires.

I could go on, but I think we all know this.  But it's a damn shame that this country is being rotted from within by anti-American traitors from the top (yes, the so-called "president") right down to the Free-Shit Army assholes who think the world owes them everything for free.  It's pathetic.

A great reset is coming.  I don't know if it will culminate into a world war or a civil war here on American soil...but some kind of upheaval is going to have to occur eventually.  Something's gotta give.  I just hope once we get through it to the other side, us good guys, the true American free-spirited freedom fighters are the winners.  And if we are, I hope we put this whole Socialism problem to rest for good.  Bury it deep and never let it's ugly head rise again.

If we put all the traitors against America on trial for their treasonous crimes it would make the Nuremberg trials look like a slow day in traffic court.  Make examples out of those people.  Hang 'em high in the city square labeled as Marxist traitors who tried to destroy our Capitalist system and Constitutional Republic.

Once we restore the original Constitution we need to outlaw Socialism as a crime against humanity.  Ban all aspects of it from our society.  And be an example once again of freedom and prosperity for the rest of the world.  And fuck up anyone who tries to take it away from us with extreme predjudice, bitchez.

Out...

"Most people probably do not think Barack Obama is a marxist" , because the tv FAILED to include that little nugget before the 2008 election. Media whores covered that up because most of them are marxist leaning trash also. Black Americans would have voted for him NO MATTER WHAT. All political "isms" are also a economic treatise. I NEVER want to live under the Soviet model "ism". We are heading in that direction as the days pass. God help us.

They all admit that communism leads to fascism but won't accept that capitalism leads to crony capitalism leads to fascism.  All "isms" lead to fascism because, at the end of the day, you help out your mates and their good-for-nothing kids that have to bend the rules in order to keep the loot.

"Oh, competition will keep everyone equally poor.  You'll only get rich if you deserve it but competition will keep you honest!"  No, the world is drenched in evidence that this is not true so the true believers resort to "Oh but that is cronyism, not capitalism."  No, the cronyism is baked into the cake.  It starts with business school and it's "building relationships with your suppliers and your customers" and works its way up from there.  Capitalism may be the best "ism", but it will not naturally keep things honest.

Here's a personal example:

I used to write computer programming books. At first, it was cool to go to a book store and see my books on the shelves. But it was a lot of work to write books, you don't make much money, and taxes were taking 40% of my royalties. After the first few books, it just wasn't worth it any more for me to continue writing books, so I stopped. If I was able to keep more of the royalties myself, I might have continued to write books.

Marriage Monetary Policy

Welcome to the Bay Area Mr. President. How’s that technology locking labor out to pump capital marginal utility working for you? Interesting job, confirming marginal morons as rocket scientists, to make a buck faster and faster. “It’s not what your country can do for you…” that builds a nation; it’s that shared vision thingamakabob.

(Tell Admiral Traaen hi for me)

Monopoly Monetary Theory may be fun a few times around the board, but it’s just a game, for those who think that money and property are something more than mere contrivances. Marriage is the imperative, every nation on this planet is bankrupt without it, and only labor can make it work, which is why the global middle class is caught in a liquidity trap and the old families are jockeying for survival.

Gold is not the exit. That much you know. The reserve currency, the latest and greatest modern monetary theory to blow up, replaced gold when it blew up. Pick any MMT out of a hat you like, what you need is a technology that will raise the living standard globally, if you want to be the leader of the free world. In short, you have to get labor to show up.

Money is not the root of all evil; stupid is. Unlike capital control and middle class entitlement, labor is quite capable of discounting money and property in real time without a meeting in Davos. Labor just moves away from stupid, into another technology. The lease is up on the war machine, which is why the US Navy is shooting itself.

Regardless of the [hi]story you choose, they all tell you the same thing, that the source of “man’s inhumanity to man” is groupthink, empire scale gravity. Monopoly is just the least common denominator, the lowest energy. Corporations of middlemen are not good or evil; they are just stupid, aggregated. Those expensive gas consumers with loan payments beyond their utility weren’t a clue?

Blaming corporations for outcomes is like blaming your training wheels for not being able to ride a bike without them. Money is a derivative of capital, which is a derivative of labor. Assuming capital is the integral, and wages must be saved to buy capital, is stupid, but “everybody does it.”

The State of California has perfected the last-to-lose algorithm in the latest empire iteration, but to what end, critters on the outside looking inside, waiting for the next bulldozer, renting a perception of life? Bring on the next set of humanoids Bob; you gotta be stupid to bet against the Fed, an irrational market always beats a rational investor.

OK, let’s do the math. The Fed is pumping $85B per month, so Cal, and others, can generate $2.5B per year on the margin…No problem Bob, next contestant please. Another transit iteration for San Francisco, at $10B+++ - great idea.

Create demand for gold, which can then be leveraged into more paper, that’s givin’ it to the man. And buy your gal a big fat diamond ring from DeBeers while you’re at it.

Money is a weapon. War breaks out when soft power no longer serves its purpose, when bedfellows become very strange in deed. And ends at labor’s doorstep. Careful which door you knock on; we are not all equal and under the law.

Your own will throw you under the bus. That is an empire accounting certainty. Empire crap hasn’t changed in thousands of years; it’s always the same algorithm, with a different dress.

Account: form of judgment; Helper: strength of guidance; Patience: labor of love; Walk: children of light

But I see a law in my members warning against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members; But now after you have known God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggardly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage? You observe days and months and seasons and years; For the desolute has many more children Than she who has a husband; Now the whole earth had one language and one speech; Come let Us go down and then confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech; Know certainly that your descendents will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years; Come let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; I will destroy them with the earth; But before faith came, we were kept under guard by law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed; My little children, for what I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you…kindness…self control. Against such there is no law; But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

God has a due season for all the seeds you plant, from bondwoman and freewoman. A woman’s effectiveness multiplies when she has a husband.

If you do not serve one master, faith in marriage, you will serve many, poverty by the law of diminishing returns. The 24 hour workweek is not a negotiation; it’s a frequency, the only one that will get you out of the mud. Watch out for the old man; he acts much faster than you can think. History is just a byproduct, repeated by self-serving politicians with observers prism.
