Guest Post: Take The Money And Run: China's Ill-Gotten Wealth Flees Overseas

The front door is covered with official pronouncements of "the China Dream" and blustery demands of hegemony, but the back door is choked with members of the financial/political Elite fleeing China and taking their wealth with them.
The first thing to understand about China is there is always a front door and a back door to everything. The front door is what's presented to the outside world; the back door is for everything that doesn't fit the PR image created by the front door.
The front door presents positive "face," the back door is for everything that would "lose face," so it's hidden and never discussed, except in private, and only with trusted family or friends.
A friend who once worked for the Chinese government recently returned home after several years absence, and found that all her bosses had moved to the West: Australia, Canada, etc. These were typical officials: their base salary was low but they managed to buy multiple homes, support mistresses, have upscale autos, and so on.
In a word, ill-gotten wealth. There are tens of thousands of these beneficiaries of China's boom in credit and corruption, and they have all either fled (with their ill-gotten wealth) to the West or "safe-haven" East (Singapore, for example). Those who haven't fled yet have passports to a safe haven, and cash and homes overseas awaiting their arrival.
It is common knowledge that the offspring of top officials all have passports and homes awaiting them in the West.
That every one of your political bosses has left China is an astounding revelation into the mindset of those who have benefited most from China's boom: they obviously fear that some upheaval could strip away their ill-gotten wealth, otherwise, why not simply move to some wealthy enclave in China?
The front door is covered with official pronouncements of the China Dream and blustery demands of hegemony, but the back door is choked with members of the financial/political Elite fleeing China and taking their wealth with them. All of this is well-known, yet it is spoken of in hushed tones, lest China lose face from this wholesale exodus of those who stripmined the nation with credit and corruption.
If the Elites had any faith in China's future, and in the security of their wealth, why would they be fleeing China in perhaps the greatest peacetime exodus of wealth the world has ever seen? Estimates of the money flowing out of China are merely guesses, of course, but the numbers run into the tens or even hundreds of billions of dollars.
Those in the political/financial Elites have the best information about conditions in China. What speaks louder, actions, or empty words? Actions, without a doubt. It's difficult to see how China can be as stable as advertised when its monied Elites all have back doors out of the country and homes awaiting them in the West. The most fearful (or guilty) aren't waiting around to risk the future in China; they're already long gone. What does that say about the front door pronouncements of hegemony and dreams? Well you need to step into the wayback time machine circa 1972 when Richard Nixon made that epic visit to "swap spit" with Chairman Mao and open the door to wonderful manufacturing future possibilities if they would only cooperate on helping the U.S. with it's interests in that part of the World which at the time was pretty much all focused on getting out of Vietnam "with honor".
Then came George Herbert Walker (Center for Intelligence at Langley) Bush when he was then director in the late 1970's who sharpened the relationship much further with he and his Corporate buddies discussing all the possibilities of architecting the cheapest of skilled labor.
Then of course came Bill Clinton who opened the floodgates to them with HIBIs in the early 90's along with India to help the American Corporations most notably the internet service sector and aerospace, farm raising them and at the same time gutting our most lucrative, technologically advanced and properous business sectors. Remember how difficult it was for them to launch rocket payloads that were 1/3 the size of what the American space program was sending up in the 60's and 70's and by the end of Clinton's second term they were supporting our commerical satellite businesses with our launches.

I think I hear reports of Draconian punishement for financial crimes in China---I am sure for those not approved to commit financial crimes but still these people that flee to the West are they fleeing an unstable China or going to a lawless West that encourages financial crime where the rule of law upholds white collar crime? The Draconian approach is the more civilized way to deal with the problem of financial crime if you spend any real time thinking about it.

For every side of the coin there are pros and cons to this especially for China:
Pros.
1. The people leaving are the ones that gamed the system, getting rid of them from society is always a plus
2. Enables new entrepreneurs to rise up as opportunities rise up with elite leaving with their money. When there is demand, just because the big player close shop does not mean demand will not be met so new companies rise up.
3. No Too big to Fail. With the elite leaving the country with their money ensures that enterprises are small to medium size and any collapse of one would lead to markets fixing them on its own course
4. All cure to inflation and hot money. The Money leaving are all US Dollars, when they come back to the West the inflation pressure in China is releived.
5. Semblance of Rule of Law. The reason for the exodus is that there is fear for rule of law coming in. There are draconian laws that punish financial crimes there though these are upheld when the new group comes in to clean up the old clan. Yes you can say it is competing factions however at least some one is being prosecuted for financial crimes unlike in some places.
Con:
1. New rulers are same as the old rulers. True like in all nations, a clean house does not mean practices are stopped but rather new people do the same thing as the old group.
2. Shakes the confidence of the mass sheeple. When the sheeple sees news like this and I can tell you all Chinese are aware of this, they fear stability of the nation. However little do they see that the rich are actually the real reason of their misery and would be better off having them out of their country.
3. Betrayal. These elite are leaving the country because they fear prosecution, that includes rich businessmen who have greased the wheels in order to be rich. The politicians for example can provide states secrets with the West who can hurt the country.

For those who are political athiest like me, all governments around the world are corrupt and China is no different from the US (where lobbying and Super PACS are a staple). Countries from India, Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore also have them and their rich do have houses outside their respective countries as well. If people read the John Perkins book Confessions of an Economic Hitman, one would understand that the corruption lies in the current financial system. The only way to wipe it out is a global reset.
As for the reason the MSM keeps reporting China is because of the Yellow Peril syndrome. The Chinese are coming run and fear, hate them too. While these Western elites gladly accept their money they will without any hesitation use them as scapegoats when time is right (after they sucked up the wealthy Chinese wealth) for their population to vent their anger upon and not see the big picture who is really effing them in the ass.
