China Re-Escalates, Deploys Warplanes To Air Defense Zone

Tyler Durden's picture

A few days ago, in the latest escalation over the its territorial dispute with Japan regarding several islands in the East China Sea, China unveiled a so-called "Air Defense Identification" zone, shown on the map below, which includes not only the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands in question, but stretches from South Korea all the way to Taiwan, and which requires that any overflights submit their plans to Beijing in advance.

The response by Japan and the US was immediate, with Japan blasting China's retaliation to its own annexation of the Senkakus a year earlier and demonstratively neither Japan Airlines nor ANA complying with China's demands, while the US, demonstrating its allegiance to Japan, flew B-52 bombers above the Air Defense Zone.

China promptly responded to what it perceived was Western hypocrisy:

China's announcement to establish an Air Defense Identification Zone in East China Sea has drawn criticism from the United States and Japan, yet their blame is wrong.

Their logic is simple: they can do it while China can not, which could be described with a Chinese saying, "the magistrates are free to burn down houses while the common people are forbidden even to light lamps."

It is known to all that the United States is among the first to set up an air defense zone in 1950, and later more than 20 countries have followed suit, which Washington has taken for granted.

However, as soon as China started to do it, Washington immediately voiced various "concerns." U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Saturday voiced concerns over the zone, fearing it might "constitute an attempt to change the status quo in the East China Sea," and a White House spokesman on Monday called the Chinese announcement over the weekend "unnecessarily inflammatory."

...

Japan set up such a zone in the 1960s and it even one-sidedly allowed the zone to cover China's Diaoyu Islands. But when China set up the zone covering the Diaoyu Islands, Tokyo immediately announced it "unacceptable" and Abe even called China's move "dangerous." It is totally absurd and unreasonable.

In one word, both Washington and Tokyo are pursuing double standards.

The latter should not come as a surprise to China, and the reason why such double standards are allowed to exist in a US superpower legacy world is because neither Japan nor the US believe China would actually dare to re-escalate further. However, in a world in which the US is no longer an undisputed superpower (especially in the aftermath of the Syrian debacle in which Putin schooled the Obama administration) that is changing.

The first clear indication that China would not just sit there and do nothing, came overnight when China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, passed through the Taiwan Strait on Thursday morning on its way to a training mission in the South China Sea.

Naturally, the training mission is just the pretext. China's long-running if dormant feud with Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is perhaps the best proxy of US interests in the region, where thanks to the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, the US sells arms and provides military training to the Taiwanese armed forces. China considers US involvement disruptive to the stability of the region, and made that quite clear in 2010 when Obama announced the decision to sell $6.4 billion in military hardware to the island leading to threats of economic sanctions from the mainland.

Which is why China crossing the Straits of Taiwan for the first time with its brand new aircraft carrier is nothing short of a message to Obama. From Xinhua:

It took about 10 hours for the carrier and its four escort ships to get through the strait separating the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.

The Liaoning entered the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday afternoon after it left its home port in Qingdao of east China's Shandong Province on Tuesday for the South China Sea on a scientific and training mission.

It was escorted by two missile destroyers, the Shenyang and Shijiazhuang, and two missile frigates, the Yantai and Weifang.

The narrative gets scarier:

"During the voyage, the carrier has kept a high degree of vigilance against approaches from foreign warships and aircraft, according to Liaoning Captain Zhang Zheng. This is the first time the carrier has conducted a cross-sea training voyage and passed through the Taiwan Strait since it was commissioned into the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy in September last year, according to Zhang."

But where it gets worst is that as BBC reported minutes ago, China has not only sent a symbolic message to the US, but a very literal one to Japan and everyone else who thought China would just sit there and do nothing, when it dispatched its own warplanes over the air defense zone.

China has sent warplanes to its newly declared air defence zone in the East China Sea, state media reports.

The vast zone, announced last week, covers territory claimed by China, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.

China has said all planes transiting the zone must file flight plans and identify themselves, or face "defensive emergency measures". But Japan, South Korea and the US have all since flown military aircraft through the area.

China's state news agency Xinhua quoted an air force colonel as saying the the warplanes had carried out routine patrols. The zone includes islands known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, which are claimed by Japan, China and Taiwan.

...

China's state news agency Xinhua quoted air force spokesman Col Shen Jinke as saying several fighter jets and an early warning aircraft had been deployed to carry out routine patrols as "a defensive measure and in line with international common practices".

He said the country's air force would remain on high alert and would take measures to deal with all air threats to protect national security.

In Xinhua's Chinese language version of the article, the colonel said the aircraft would "strengthen the monitoring of targets in the air defence zone and do their duty".

Concurrently, perhaps to diffuse the edge, China's propaganda machine made this latest development seem like it was all perfectly normal:

China on Thursday confirmed the smooth operation of flights over the country's newly established Air Defense Identification Zone in the East China Sea. Everybody can see that flights over the zone have been normal and safe, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a daily press briefing, adding that in particular, civil flights have not been impacted at all.

"We expect all sides, including aviation companies, to actively coordinate with us and jointly safeguard flight safety," Qin said, adding that aviation companies from many countries have submitted flight applications to the Chinese aviation authority.

So what happens if aviation companies do not coordinate: just how unsafeguarded will flight safety be?

What happens next: will Japan once again prod the not so sleeping dragon, and continue flying commercial (and military) airplanes over China's expanded zone of control, without preclearance with Beijing, and will the US send some more strategic bombers just to prove that Obama didn't win the Nobel peace prize for nothing?

And will then China once again re-escalate, perhaps through an "accidental" engagement with what it "vigilantly" thought was an offensive act by "foreign warships and aircraft?" resulting in a major diplomatic scandal or worse. Or will it simply, and more effectively, launch a salvo of a few hundred billion US Treasurys into the electronic ether, sending the 10 Year yield over 3% and the Fed scrambling to preserve its centrally-planned house of cards?

So, the ball is now in the court of Japan, which lately has been engaging in increasingly more desperate and irrational actions to preserve a sense of control over its imploding economy and the whole "Fukushima thing", and which means that much more entertainment is imminent.

Tell that to the Tibetans, the Vietnamese, the Burmese, the Indians, the Taiwanese, the Phillipinos, the Lao. They are not at China doorstep, they are under its thumb.

Anyway, this post is about China not USA but since you keep bringing up the USA lets mention that if you give the people of the above countries a choice of who they would rather have at  THEIR doorstep, China would rate a distant second. Which is pathetic given that the USA is not so great either. But, fact is, Chinas is acting more like the USA each day than the USA ever did, itelf.

As long as Japanese flag carrying airline such as JAL and ANA refuse to comply with the Chinese rules they will quite likely not be allowed to fly into China nor land at their airports. Guess who is going to fold their hand fastest ?

I say the American President should show his resolve by hopping on Air Force One and fly a track from Japan to Taiwan.  Now is the time for strong leadership!  Forward!!!!!!

(I still don't get why anyone here thinks China is the "good guy" on the world stage....at best they are a national version of what TPTB want the New World Order to look like).

The cruelty and atrocities of the Japanese military toward Chinese civilians during their occupations simply boggles the imagination.  The Nanking Massacre on Wikipedia is but a pale reflection of the shit that went down.  I am sure the Chinese have not forgotten.

I will not support any military action by an Administration that attacks and Disarms the public.

The New York unSAFE law is not constitutional.

Defunding the CMP was disgusting and back stabbing to curio collectors throughout the country.

Attacking and bullying a hundred million gun owners for the actions if a sicko in Newton just proves the Democrats are scum of the earth.

If they want to fight then stick a rifle in their hands and shove them in the South China Sea. Along with every Obamacare supporting drone.

"Or will it simply, and more effectively, launch a salvo of a few hundred billion US Treasurys into the electronic ether, sending the 10 Year yield over 3% and the Fed scrambling to preserve its centrally-planned house of cards?"

Darn, some folks just have a poetic way with words. Why does this possibility resonate in the heart of truth? Hummm. Seems like something a hitler new world order rottenchid glove-puppet in china setting all this globalist garbage up maurice strong would do. Wasn't he the one first in to Iraq after the invasion to negotiate those oil contracts for the UN? And now the chinese get all the oil America paid blood and treasure for? Wow, how about that?? Go figure that one out. It is like when we all told the military back in 2001, the set up wars were to eliminate and ware down the American military so as to lose the third world war. They still do not get it. They fight on for the foreign bankster profits and ghoulish diabolical evil population elimination plans, and NOTHING else. They certainly are not killing in the name of any Americans, or for America. IT IS STRICTLY FOR THE BANKSTER EMPIRE OF DUST.

"So, the ball is now in the court of Japan, which lately has been engaging in increasingly more desperate and irrational actions to preserve a sense of control over its imploding economy and the whole "Fukushima thing", and which means that much more entertainment is imminent."

So, the fukushima ball is heating up, may even crescendo soon according to the population elimination and profiteering from the sick plot. Commie-care to the rescue! As people get more and more angry about this blatant plan to murder first the stupid japanese, and then the rest of the world, things will heat up big time. Balls be bouncing!

The evil instigator plan might also be to get them Asian folks all fired up to go after each other as the banksters crash and burn and profit from all this chaos. All as planned of course. Never you mind about that there nuklear Extinction Level Event thingy, lets all worry about WAR!!! (stress stress stress) There are just different variations and outcomes that can and have already happened. What has been important, is the constant vigilance of the crew. The constant shining of the light on these evil cock-a-roaches that do the dirty deeds in the shadows, and proft from war. All for the god money, and the profiteers ego. Neither of which is nothing compared to the love one creates in the world. All actions have an opposite and equal re-action. THIS!!!...is the Law.

On the better side of the coin of chaos, there was a great community Thanksgiving Dinner in town that many attended. It was a grand affair, and all 800 people or so were fed to the brim. Happiness and children ran wild. The live music included hits like "America" and the "House of the Rising Sun." They were Christian in their goodness and presentation. We were all grateful for this real sense of community where all the churches in town all pitch in to cook and prepare the many pounds of big store donated foods and turkeys for the people to freely enjoy. We are very lucky here in tangy town to have this kind of grace and goodness where even the poor are treated like Kings, and Queens. All towns should have a large soup kitchen that gets daily donations from all the big food stores to serve every day in community like this place does. If people knew how much good food is thrown away by the big corporate store chains, it would shock them. It would be a better world if we all shared the abundance of what there is to share. America can still easily feed herself and the world if everybody simply grew a garden. Even in the winter time if possible. We are after all, so very blessed still, in so many ways. If it were not for the out of control babylonian govts who are all merely puppets to the great nothing evil bankster warmongers and profiteers from death and destruction, this would be a wonderful world.

Yeppers, we can almost expect anything with all these balls hitting the court at once. May the few and the proud do the right thing, and all the warrior Light-brigaders of truth and real justice also do the right things when the chinga hits the fan.

Merry Happy to the crew...for all you ALL do!

(1) If you use such apps as Flightaware or Flightradar24 you'll quickly see the airspace in questions is a high density a travel zone with multiple air routes intersecting across the entire "zone." Literally every day hundreds if not thousands of flight have to transit through that airspace.

(2) If you are familiar with the Chinese military's control over airspace, you'll further be aware of the fact that the Chinese military is extraordinarily intransigent in the fair use of military controlled air space. Most Chinese airports rank among the lowest in punctual departure/arrival times because the airspace restrictions the Chinese have in place severely limit the access of civil aviation around the country. In fact, one of the major impediments to the growth of the Chinese aviation industry isn't money, or the question of whether people will fly or not, or anything else, but the simple fact that most Chinese airspace is controlled by the military and the miltary refuses to relinquish even one cubic millimeter of control.

(3) The Chinese air grab in fact affects virtually any airline that operates in Asia. With the severe restrictions that the Chinese military enjoys to exercise over its airspace in mind, the Chinese basically claiming this major artery of airtravel is now their exclusive domain will not just wrankle the Japanese, or Americans, but most likely every single country in Asia.

This is definitely winning friends and making allies all across the region.

Well played China. Well played.

Well don't get me wrong, hell yes the CHINESE are now the fucking 500LB gorilla of ASIA, and they're fucking all,

I mean I don't even go to Laos, or Myanmar anymore, all has been bought by Chinese, and all now have Vietnam inflation.

I used to go to Luang PraBang(laos) every year for beer, now its more fucking expensive than China.

The chinese are now buying Northern Thailand, and they already bought Udon-Thani, so soon the Chinese will fucking OWN SE-ASIA, so its no fucking surprise that they're going out over the ocean to 'BUY' that as well.

But who in the HELL did they learn these tricks from? Who thought up 'owning' the moon, or Antarctica first? The fucking WEST.

I live in Yunan, and luckily they don't seem to be investing a fucking dime, which suits me just fine.

So why now?  What has prompted China to turn up this heat?

Could it be their usual attempt to re-direct frustration and anger amongst the domestic masses toward an external target, with Japan being the traditional target? Are domestic economic conditions getting so bad?  (A handful of anti-Japan acts in Shanghai in the last few days show that this policy is at play.)

Could it be that the PLA, miffed by the very selective enforcement of laws against corruption, which were directed at PLA favorite (much because of what his father did in the Long March time) Bo Xilai, forced this upon the non-military Party Leadership, who now cannot appear weak?

Part of what prompted this act, which comes between two cultures where "face" is of particular import, are the statements of Japan PM Abe since he re-took the top job in Tokyo.

There's now a lot of dynamite in the room and lots of chances for a spark. A Falkland's type action is a distinct possibility.  Though it might seem somewhat ironic, given the history of he mid 20th Century, the majority of east Asia is rooting for Japan, since the Chinese have become "ugly" faster than any other emerging power in history.

3.) Buy USA ( tbills, ... walmart goods exchanged for apple/boeing )

Lastly, lets NEVER fucking forget that the JAPS baby fucked and raped and entire city's like Nanjing had all the men and male's murdered and the women raped, and those pretty kept to be fucked to death. The Chinese WILL never fucking forget.

Where do you get I am  "shocked" from what I wrote?  I merely looked at what some of the impetus behind it might be.  Leadership test has a good deal to do with it, I suspect, with the PLA facing off against the new CP chiefs.

As for China's purchases in Africa and S America, time will tell how local populations will react to their new overlords.  None of that Neo Colonialism worked out so well in Burma, where the overall population might well place China lower on the "Like" list than Rohingyas.  Myanmars cheered when KIA guerillas began blowing up Chinese engineers near dams on northern rivers.  The Myanmar government even reached out to the US, Japan and the West, leading to Myanmar's new opening.

Historically, Japan has, like most countries, its closet skeletons.  China has been most effective in keeping the horrible memories alive, and using those memories to gloss over the CPs history of dealing out similar grand scale death to its own citizens.  Ain't nobody innocent.
