"I Work At McDonalds, But I Can't Afford To Eat There"

Tyler Durden's picture

For Shawndraka Mack, a 100% pay rise from her current $7.60 "would do just fine." While some employees turn to blood plasma donation, and most are on food stamps (and other benefits), the mother of two teenagers (on Medicaid) told Bloomberg Businessweek, “I love what I do, but I don’t want to work for nothing." Between the 40 hours a week she works and the benefits, Mack explains, “I work at McDonald’s and I can’t afford to eat there. It’s crazy.” Of course, McDonalds has 'tips' for surviving on their state-subsidized wages but once again, despite Harry Reid's extrapolated charts, the reality of raising the minimum wage is lost on most who never stop to think of where the 'money' comes from; and besides employees have little to no leverage as we explained here.

Via Bloomberg Businessweek,

Mack, who is 40, has been working in the fast food business for 18 years. For the past six, she’s been at a McDonald’s in South Carolina, working 40 hours a week and making $7.60 an hour. “I love what I do, but I don’t want to work for nothing. I want to work for something,” she says.

...

Her fiancé is on disability, and the $600 he receives every month goes toward insurance for her 1990 Honda Accord, the phone bill, and some spending money for the kids. Her salary covers gas for her commute, electricity, and everything else the family needs. The kids are on Medicaid.

The family gets $345 a month in food stamps. Mack says she goes to the grocery store once a month, and whatever she buys has to last until the next trip. She brings her lunch to work every day. “I work at McDonald’s and I can’t afford to eat there. It’s crazy.”

...

A few weeks ago, Mack joined the effort to raise fast-food workers’ wages to at least $15 an hour. “That would do me just fine,” she says. “I expect to stay at McDonald’s. I just want to get paid more for what I know and what I do. I want to make sure my kids have a better life than I do.”

The harsh reality bottom line is if she wants to be able to afford McDonalds or anything else, she should motivate herself to be something more than a minimum wage food service worker. Because the sad reality for her and millions of other minimum wage, zero leverage workers like her is that the robots are finally coming, and they don't demand food... or a wage.

Well, hopefully Obama will get amnesty fist rammed through congress so that she'll have plenty of competition for her shiity little job from people that won't complain as much as she does.

You would think with over 18 years in the Fast Food business she would have looked into becoming an assistant manger or shift manager or store manager along the way. She makes minimum wage cause she's either denser than a brick or lacks ambition to get ahead.

We'll be at the Idiocracy before the turn of the century the way things are going.

I doubt the temporarily suck-cess-full on here understand such depth, Herd. Henry Ford INCREASED worker's wages, LOANED them money to buy the Ford they were building on the production line, and kickstarted the American economy into a world-class ass kicking machine. He even pioneered cheap company housing and created the inexpensive charcoal briquette for affordable weekend barbeques. Hoo-rah for Henry.

You mean the FedRes?

That mises article uses the same idiot arguments everyone uses. Anyway..

Capital can move, labour is stuck, that's all there is to it - it's been endlessly demonstrated that there needs to be a balance between these two. There are those who would love to make labour priced entirely on the global market but that would destroy local economies + usher in a new feudalism.

Compare countries with and without a minimum wage (and levels of minimum wage) and you may notice a trend...

There is ZERO evidence that having no minimum wage benefits an economy over time.

The $5-a-day rate was about half pay and half bonus. The bonus came with character requirements and was enforced by the Socialization Organization. This was a committee that would visit the employees' homes to ensure that they were doing things the "American way." They were supposed to avoid social ills such as gambling and drinking. They were to learn English, and many (primarily the recent immigrants) had to attend classes to become "Americanized." Women were not eligible for the bonus unless they were single and supporting the family. Also, men were not eligible if their wives worked outside the home.

More than 15,000 would-be workers showed up to claim the $5-a-day jobs, though only about 3,000 were needed. Those left outside were angry, and eventually fire hoses were turned on to disperse the crowd.

I don't think Americans would mind paying extra for a burger if the workers lived the "American way"....no rap CD collection, no big screen TV, no lotto tickets, no alcohol or drugs, no Spanglish, no illegitimate children, no disability welfare, no food stamps, no obamacare.

Comparing Obama and Hitler is stupid. Obama is part of the system that lead to the problem. Hitler, as hated as he is, turned around a mess he had to deal with. Nazis economists implemented the "work standard", read Delaisi 'the european revolution', that explains the incredible German recovery during the 30ies, obtained without gold or foreign credit. Made with fiat by the way, but managed properly. But I guess it's easier to always bash the Germans on stories relayed by 60 years of non stop propaganda of the same mainstream media that everybody here seems to hate lol.

Be careful with this theory of Hitler as an economic genius. First off, economics was one of his weak points, it did not even interest him all that much, only enough to know that he had to keep the sheeple fed and at work to keep him in power and that he would need to find lebensraum to keep his economic machine from stalling.

In fact, his economic policies were so detrimental in the long run, what with his unproductive rearmament schemes and expensive infrastructure investments, that he told his generals in the second half of the thirties that he had to start a war somewhere before 1943 or the country would go bust.

So much for a sustainable economic policy.

Hitler offered a way out of a severe economic depression brough on through depasement of fiat currency. Banks tried to print their way out of trouble and it ended up in total national bankruptcy. Because of that radicalists came to power and did what they did... also in the name of greater good.

Germany had their problem with worker's unions, who refused to scale their demands in proportion to hardships brought on by WW1 debts and reparation payments. They demanded the pay as if things were still hunky dory. That's why one of the first measures of the Nazi government was to break up labor unions.

Also, since the Jews had a natural distrust in fiat and bailed ahead of everybody else, they ended up enriching themselves tremendously throughout 20's and 30's. With their precious metals they literally bought up Germany and became the central power class. So when Hitler needed money for the war campaign, they became a convenient target.

... and when the rest of the world joined the war party, they used the genocide as an excuse and justification for retaliation, when in reality they cared about Jews as much as Hitler himself. It was a resource redistribution campaign - the rush to secure oil fields, oil colonies and therefore the industrial future for the next 100 years.

God damnit, there are so many layers to this that it boggles the mind. But it's much simpler to say: "Hitler bad!" Also easy to say: "Obama's like Hitler".

Obama's not like Hitler. He's his own brand of tyrant. Fascism has evolved to the point where it can no longer resembles the thing from 50+ years ago. It's a well oiled machine. It's many systems rolled into one. It's the worst of everything this civilization has seen. I don't think it fits any definition. It's a hydra.

Why not raise the minimum wage in America for NON US citizens to $20/hr and make it retroactive 1 year that they could sue for if the return to country of origin? Keep US citizens lower so they get the job and the illegals have a reason to return and no reason to come back. They came here because it is profitable to do so. Stick it to the people that wanted the cheap slave labor and let them pay the relocation tab. The extra 10 grand or so could help them start up a business in their own country. I actually think black folk what get on board with this.Of course all the WHITE democrats (slavery party) would be opposed to the hefty fines and loss of nannies and gardeners.

I asked many balck folk if roofing houses for $10/hr insulting....They all said they wish they could get paid that knowing it is hard work....Funny, the illegals have no problem finding those jobs.

When that was true "stepping stone", the USSA still produced things and provided jobs in places like steel mills, auto factories, coal mines, making washing machines, computers, and stuff that was exported around the world.

Once soul-less Corporations realized they could arbitrage labor across the globe, all jobs moved to cheaper places where wages + added cost of shipping allowed higher bonus in the "C" suites.

I pray for the day cheap oil disappears, and gas is $500/gallon. Only then will we forced to think & produce locally. Till then, it's just tears...

The designated "poor" live remarkably like the working poor or the bottom of the middle class.  They just get more than half of their incomes from the taxpayers.  Wages are for cigs, drugs, Air Jordons, the real necessities.  Oddly enough, earning more would not help her.  She would lose benefits and pay taxes.  Welcome to the new normal.

That is precisely why a lot of these sob stories smell like BS to me.  She has been working in the fast food industry for 18 years (not months, but YEARS) and is still making minimum wage.  Give me a break.  My daugher has had a part time job at Burger King for about 2 years.  She couldn't give a rats ass about it, but its walking distance from her dorm.  Even so, so has gotten a few raises and they've been literally begging her to become an assistant manager.  She doesn't want to, but I've actually been urging her to take the promotion to get the experience.

The other thing is that when I worked at BK (back in the late 70s), you could eat whatever you wanted on break for free.  Given the enormous amount of food they toss anyway, can't see why they are such hardasses about making their employees pay for food.

If they cut off the free shit they would never get reelected.

I worked a crap load of shitty jobs and got tired of it and did something about it other than bitch and complain and shack up with a female that produced a pair of rug rats and sat around all day getting fat and watching her stories on the idiot box.

What's her excuse. 18 years in the business and all she's doing is line and counter work. That shows a lack of direction in one's life and very little brains or ambition. After 18 years she should have at least worked into some form of management. If not then who's fault is that.

This exact same debate about McDonalds came up on ZH several months ago.

When an employer does not pay its staff enough to live on and the employees are on welfare to help fund living costs, this is clearly a form of Corporate Welfare...funded by involuntary taxpayers.

Is it right that taxpayers who never eat at McDonalds should pay taxes to fund Corporate Welfare to McDonalds and their shareholders?? Or should McDonalds be obliged to raise the price of their products to pay wages which their staff can actually live on without taxpayer support??

Somebody has to pay..it's either McDonalds customers' or taxpayers in general.

A minimum wage tends to level the playing field between McD and the hash joint down the street.  The current minimum unlivable wage is a form of theft from the uneducated underclass and the public at large to the fat cats on Wall St.  Traditionally government police power has been used to reduce theft.

But since you did mention it, how about providing a solution to this common dilemma??

This McDonalds worker is currently not being paid enough to live on, so she gets welfare. All I said is that her welfare in reality amounts to Corporate Welfare funded by taxpayers, many of whom never even visit McDonalds. Any business that cannot exist and make a profit without taxpayer-funded welfare, is not a viable business and is really a make-work scheme.

I have worked with hundreds of unskilled / low wage people.

You know what happens when you offer them a better position - one that pays more?

Most of the time they TURN IT DOWN because it causes them to lose their government money.

If you jack the rate per hour many will just choose to work fewer hours - so they still qualify for their government cash.

Go out into the real world and get some life experience them come back and tell me how things work.

If you want more of something subsidize it - you want less of something tax it.

The more cash the gov hands out the more low income people you will create to collect it.

Sure some folks need help - and I am not against giving them some - but have a TIME limit on how long they get the free cash.
