Food Poverty In The UK Has Reached "Public Health Emergency" Levels

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

This tragic story emanating from the UK just doesn’t seem to go away. Probably because it’s true. The food crisis across the pond first came to my attention in earnest back in October when the Red Cross announced it was set to provide food aid to the UK for the first time since World War II.

The latest twist to this unacceptable saga comes via a letter send by a group of doctors and senior academics from the Medical Research Council and two leading universities to the British Medical Journal calling it a “public healthy emergency” and accusing the government of covering up the problem by delaying a report on the subject.

More from The Independent:

Hunger in Britain has reached the level of a “public health emergency” and the Government may be covering up the extent to which austerity and welfare cuts are adding to the problem, leading experts have said.

In a letter to the British Medical Journal, a group of doctors and senior academics from the Medical Research Council and two leading universities said that the effect of Government policies on vulnerable people’s ability to afford food needed to be “urgently” monitored.

A surge in the number of people requiring emergency food aid, a decrease in the amount of calories consumed by British families, and a doubling of the number of malnutrition cases seen at English hospitals represent “all the signs of a public health emergency that could go unrecognised until it is too late to take preventative action,” they write.

Despite mounting evidence for a growing food poverty crisis in the UK, ministers maintain there is “no robust evidence” of a link between sweeping welfare reforms and a rise in the use of food banks. However, publication of research into the phenomenon, commissioned by the Government itself, has been delayed, amid speculation that the findings may prove embarrassing for ministers.

Chris Mould, chief executive of the Trussell Trust, the largest national food bank provider said that one in three of the 350,000 people who required a food bank hand-out this year were children.

In their letter, Dr Taylor-Robinson, Professor Whitehead and colleagues cite figures recently released by the Government which revealed a surge in the number of malnutrition cases diagnosed at English hospitals since the recession – up from 3,161 in 2008/09 to 5,499 in 2012/13. They also draw attention to reports from the Institute for Fiscal Studies which found a decrease in the number of calories purchased by families, as well as “substitution with unhealthier foods, especially in families with young children”.

Fortunately for the UK, they are blessed with a concentration of oligarchs with supposedly extraordinary capabilities so they should be able to sort this all out in now time. Isn’t that right Boris Johnson?

This has ONE and only ONE cause:  The elites attempting to protect their asset prices, and calling such oppressive policies "stability".    Stability is code for, "no matter what happens, we don't lose bitchez.  We will beggar every last one of you just so long as our assets carry the same face value".

This is not a crisis.  This is the direct result of policy intended to protect the rich.

Sorry UK masses.  You are cannon fodder in a different kind of war.

Not much different from the millions of kids in the USSA that are in the same boat. Privatize NHS, starve a third of the next gen & you got some serious population reduction. Isn't that the goal? Just heard a guy named Dowd on BBG saying he thinks the USSA is getting ready for an Arab spring. I think he's right.

There are actually many ways to propagate a crisis. From the left you simply squander and misappropriate what resources there might be, and invite wholesale fraud at every turn. If your population isn't dishonest enough, import some who are!

The cheapest calorie sources are the most fattening, which is to say poverty is obesogenic when it drives people to shift food purchasing to lower grade foods.

I don't know about that.  My garden is pretty cheap ($0, and even makes me money sometimes), and it keeps me healthy and lean.

Or, if you don't have ANY land whatsoever (I provide 90% of my food on 1/4 acre), there is always dried beans, rice, flour, sugar, potatoes, salad greens of all kinds, grits, canned tomatoes, etc.; all of which are cheap, keep well (other than the salad), and can produce a myriad of meals.  One catch:  You actually have to cook it.   OOOHHHH, I know, putting forth effort is scary; but it is worth it for high-quality, nutritious, tasty food.

Now, if you want to be a lazy-ass and just toss some pre-made shit in the micro for 3 mins and chow down; then, instead of paying with effort, you pay with your health.

Actually, you can almost get away with being a complete lazy ass...

Do your cooking in a slow-cooker. Make decently big batches of stuff.

Invest in some nice containers - preferably glass, that seal really well.

End up cooking for about a couple hours a week, keeping three or four batches of stuff in the fridge.

(Takes 8 hours to cook, but that's work the slow cooker is doing, not you. Let stuff cook overnight if you like.)

...but which you can nuke out of the fridge just like the most convenient fast food. Only much, much nicer. And cheaper.

Already here...
In 2012, 16.1 million or approximately 22 percent of children in the U.S. lived in poverty.

The United States changed the name of its definitions in 2006 that eliminated references to hunger, keeping various categories of food insecurity. Now "hungry children" are classified by the government as "food insecure children".

With continued increases in the number of hungry children during this "remarkable" economic recovery, those in government must sleep better knowing there are no more hungry children. They are just food insecure.

I was strolling along the boardwalk a few nights ago and I observed a mother and her cute little 5 year old daughter as they were walking towards me. As I moved on by them, I heard the daughter say, "Mommy. I'm hungry." The mother replied, almost laughingly, "Honey, you're not hungry. You are just a little food insecure." Just then, the adorable little daughter looked up at her mother and retorted, quite loudly, "Food insecure??? HEY BITCH...FEED ME!!!!"

As George Carlin once said, "I don't like words that hide the truth. I don't like words that conceal reality."

This analysis is exactly backwards. They got rid of the hunger category because there isn't any substantial amount of it. They had to develop an evocative, yet meaningless term so that they could jerk heart strings and fool voters. Most of all so that lobbyists, bureaucrats, and fund-raisers wouldn't lose their jobs, budgets, and power/political bases.

America now produces more corn for ethanol (0 or negative energy return) than food. American food production is suicidally connected to oil, GMOs and pesticides all lowering production, destroying food diversity, poisoning humans, pollinating insects and other animals, removing top soil, decimating water tables and a hundred other things. For perfect timing, as the oil gets harder to reach, this last generation knows next to nothing about food production, skills that every one before it has known and kept sacred now handed over to a handful of corporate criminals whose main goal is to control seed and make it self destructive.

this site has taught me a lot of invaluable things but my food skills come first.

Our government's policy of immigration from favoured third world countries makes sense in this light.  If the peasants get hungry they'll fight amongst themselves along racial or cultural lines for the last scraps while the elites continue to profit from it.

edit: To be clear I'm not against immigration but for the longest time I couldn't figure out why cities like Bradford that are predominantly Indian now (or the French suburbs populated exclusively by Africans and North Africans) could happen.  I couldn't figure out what kind of political public policy would set out to ghettoize entire neighbourhoods or cities with people from a different culture or race within an established one.  It makes no sense.

Even if what you said were remotely true, immigrants from these countries are welcome for the following reasons:

1 - are never seen begging
2 - they fit in and assimilate due to their common ancestry and culture
3 - they have earned the right to be here due to their country's sacrifices to help the UK in two world wars.

In short they are not a burden.

Incidentally, Big Issue sellers are legally registered as self-employed  (under internal UK law not an EU law/edict) if they have the Big Issue ID card.  I'm sure you knew that really and you're just pretending to be thick.

That makes them legally here by UK law whether you like it or not (Incidentally the current law is mostly Thatcher's - her dream was self-employment for as many people as possible and deliberately made it so that it was easier for foreign nationals to cone into the country that way).  And it is legally a job whther you like it or not and not even UKIP will say otherwise.  All self-employment regarding sales is around trying to convince people they need what you are selling even when they don't.  If you don't understand that you will never be a succesful sales person.

I don't really give a shit if the law says it is a proper job or not. Laws are not infallible truths as they are made by politicians who may or May not be working to a particular undeclared agenda.

If the government passed a law saying that a crow is a canary does that make a crow a canary? No, of course not. Likewise if the government has passed a law saying that foreign beggar is not a foreign beggar then it does not change the fact.

As for it being The fault of Maggie Thatcher you are wrong again. The open border policy is a European Union law emanating from Brussels. Just one of the wonders that we had to put up with in order to remain a member of that undemocratic institution.

You may think that selling people shit they don't need or want is an admirable pursuit but I do not. A good product sells itself. If it needs a smarmy fuck in a cheap suit to point out its virtues then it is probably something to be avoided.

I don't need to check home office figures. You think I don,t notice them because they are white? Are u fucking serious? Don,t you think I can tell if a white person is not from the UK by their accent?

If 9 people are white and one is black then I wouldn't assume anything. Making assumptions is what you do, (see earlier comment about Dailymail readers), I would speak to them first and make and informed opinion based on the evidence. Old fashioned approach I know but I find I works well.

As regards your Red Lenin handle you assumed I don't know it is a Warhol painting, without any real evidence other than my saying it suited you.

As it happens I did not know it but that is really quite irrelevant. I don't like Warhol so why would I know or care. It is not a measure of my intelligence nor does it make my option on other matters null and void.

I still think Red Lenin suits you very we'll though.

How exactly does it suit me.  Am I Russian?  nope.  Am I a left wing revolutionary with nationalist leanings?  nope - never even voted Labour.  Do I have a beard?  nope.  Am I bald?  Nope.

You also fall easily into traps and are easy to manipulate - I deliberately never said if you heard them talk.  But apart from that there are plenty of people who are now UK nationals who do not have a British accent.

And you are behaving in a structurally racist manner.  You are by your beliefs making it very obvious that you believe white christian illegal immigrants are superior and more welcome than non-white ones.  A pretty disgusting position to take.

Incidentally,  the Daily Mail specifically prides itself on it's readership being predominantly middle class, blue rinse traditionalist shire tories - their editorial team even brag about it.

You said I make it obvious that I think white Christian immigrants are superior to non whites. How disingenuous.

What i am saying is that people who's ancestors left this country to live in other parts of the world have a greater right to live here than those who have no connection with this country whatsoever. That is what I believe and I don't think it is an unreasonable position at all.

Why should British taxpayers have to support those who come here to scrounge of the state. That is exactly what the Romanian big issue sellers are doing. If you are so ok with that then I suggest you put them up in your house and give them your money. Go on put your beliefs into action. Let us all know how you get on.

You have already made it plain you prefer white immigrants to non-white - that makes you racist.

All the non-indiginous people you see in the US, Canada, Australia, NZ etc are all either immigrants or the descendents of immigrants or slaves.  Exactly what effort did they make to fit in with the indiginous population?

They do get my money - I pay an awful lot of tax, far more than most people earn and I don't resent paying it either.

And your position is not only unreasonable ut is also doomed and will probably hold you back.

By any chance are you getting these stories from the Daily Mail?  That's a fuckwit newspaper read by predominantly 'blue rinse' shire tory pensioners.

Incidentally,  the biggest chunk of welfare in the UK (after pensioners who account for over 40% 0f welfare spending) goes to private sector landlords so perhaps we should be bringing in forced rent controls.

Few facts for you about UK welfare.  The unemployed account for around 3% of the welfare bill.    Most Housing Allowance is paid to people actually in work but on catastrophically low wages and/or short hours.  The biggest chunk of welfare claimants are pensioners.  The next biggest chunk are people who are actuually in work.  The percentage of immigrants in work is higher than the percentage of indiginous and likewise the percentage unemployed is lower.

An illegal immigrant is an illegal immigrant.  Your problem is you are racist and think a white illegal immigrant is better than a non-white.

Your problem is you are refusing to accept reality, trying to resist inevitable change (which will actually accelerate) and trying to work against the flow.  Whereas most people work with it and learn to use it.  Life's easier that way and you get on further and faster.

The reason for immigration is

governments ALWAYS take the path of least resistance and when they need GDP to expand...................

They alow MASS Immigration............Because it increases GDP!

On the food Banks......yes it's sad

Governments have encouraged DEBT.........folks now strugle with that debt and have to use food banks!

it's all actions have a consequence!

If interest rates increase............thease food banks will not have enough food to supply the millions that will not be able to not only feed them selves but keep warm  and pay all the monthly bills.

Property prices will crash and that will mean the banks will be under water more than they are now!

And then it will be "Bail in" and any savings will be wiped out.

You will then have only poor peeps a very few Middle Class and the rich!

Things are going to be vary bad indeed................but most are just thinking it will never happen here.

Just because you can make babies, doesn't mean there will ever be productive work for them.  So they become a burden on everyone else.  Condoms are a terrible form of birth control.  Hand out 100% effective IUDs in schools instead.

As that stuff goes and gets harder, human labor will have to fill that gap. It may not be glamorous, it may not pay well, but it may very well be necessary> Think of all the other physical structures falling apart, the need for a lot of us to get back to farming, to know a wide variety of real hands on skills - just to survive.

Though farming will be difficult when property becomes too expensive for many people and is instead rented out. Plus you have to contend with local laws and regulations which create more hassle for the prospective farmer. Community gardens will definitely be on the rise, but even then they are in danger of being handed over to private interests.

Monsanto is breeding crops with the DNA of the mallard so that when plants are ready for harvest during that particular season they will detach themselves and migrate to the nearest grocery store. However, the robot octocopters will replace the bees.

The end result will be that thousands of farmers worldwide would be deemed "unproductive" and disposable.

no, it won't. borders? have a look at the immigration policies that the UK really had in the last decades until now. did the millions of Pakistanis and Africans come because they were EU citizens? did the Poles bring a negative impact to the British economy? yet of course the island is already bitching because of the future influx of Bulgarians and Romanians. yet this is in the future, not in the present

hunger? what about inflation / Pound devaluation? typically it's the lower & impoverished middle class that hungers, being too proud to be on the dole. and devaluation of their meagre savings is exactly what makes them suffer most. not the EUR's fault. what about British industrial policies? not the EU's fault

fact is the South-East is happy in it's FIRE economy bubble, Cameron pumps state funds into first home buyers, and most of those problems are in the rest of the country

don't be astonished if in future Scotland exits the UK, even adopts the EUR and North England starts thinking about doing the same

I love England; the British are great, but they are ridiculous re food.  They waste/throw out huge amounts, and they eat as badly as Americans and have done so for a long time.  This is from George Orwell's Road to Wigan Pier (a great book re a mining area), written in 1937:

"The miner’s family spend only tenpence a week on green vegetables and tenpence half-penny on milk (remember that one of them is a child less than three years old), and nothing on fruit; but they spend one and nine on sugar (about eight pounds of sugar, that is) and a shilling on tea. The half-crown spent on meat might represent a small joint and the materials for a stew; probably as often as not it would represent four or five tins of bully beef. The basis of their diet, therefore, is white bread and margarine, corned beef, sugared tea, and potatoes — an appalling diet. Would it not be better if they spent more money on wholesome things like oranges and wholemeal bread or if they even, like the writer of the letter to the New Statesman, saved on fuel and ate their carrots raw? Yes, it would, but the point is that no ordinary human being is ever going to do such a thing. The ordinary human being would sooner starve than live on brown bread and raw carrots. And the peculiar evil is this, that the less money you have, the less inclined you feel to spend it on wholesome food. A millionaire may enjoy breakfasting off orange juice and Ryvita biscuits; an unemployed man doesn’t. Here the tendency of which I spoke at the end of the last chapter comes into play. When you are unemployed, which is to say when you are underfed, harassed, bored, and miserable, you don’t want to eat dull wholesome food. You want something a little bit ‘tasty’. There is always some cheaply pleasant thing to tempt you. Let’s have three pennorth of chips! Run out and buy us a twopenny ice-cream! Put the kettle on and we’ll all have a nice cup of tea! That is how your mind works when you are at the P.A.C. level."

Chapter six ( is largely about how the British poor in that locale eat; it's very much worth reading; nothing seems to change.  He also talks about how an Asian person could feed himself on a fraction of what these poor Brits live on (Orwell lived in Burma), but the British government can't bring aid down to that level since Brits are so incapable that they would simply starve on that level of food expenditure, rather than adapt their diet.

In any case, I am sorry that food is a problem for so many British people.  They have a high obesity rate, but being poorer is not going to help that.

Yes, yes, I know.  I thought of trying to parse all of that (I'm more than one part of that mix myself, a few generations back), and fix my post as soon as I posted it, but it was too late to fix as it had been replied to.  But to be honest, for outsiders, it is pretty much the Hutu-Tutsi distinction.  Which was which  -  you tell me without checking wikipedia!  One tribe was short, the other tall; they killed one another in huge numbers horribly.  It was practically yesterday, and now no-one remembers except the Hutu and the Tutsi which is which.  My Dublin Irish neighbor's daughter married a Cork guy, and my neighbor (we're in the U.S.) thinks that's an astounding thing  -  such different cultures!  Again, to outsiders, the distinctions we make among ourselves can be kind of funny, and not something that ends up in the long-term memory.

Don't feel too bad for the English. They managed to adapt and survive food rationing during WW2 and despite the lack of fresh fruit they were healthier. This article seems to be most hyperbole to me. I have seen no evidence of real need in this regard. Most of the 'poor' I see are well supported by government handouts.

Has anyone checked if the use of food banks is due to actual need or it it just chancers claiming to be poor so they can get food for free and save their money for fags and beer?

They were healthier because the amount of meat and saturated fats they were allowed was minimal.  In addition there was no white bread - only wholemeal and likewise only wholemeal flour.
