On The CIA's Role In Nelson Mandela's 1962 Arrest
While we don't want to detract in any way from the world's mourning the passage of one of 20th century's most luminary personalities, we can't help but be confused by the hypocrisy exhibited by certain members of the US government. The reason: it was none other than the US government-controlled Central Intelligence Agency that was instrumental in Nelson Mandela's 1962 arrest that resulted in his 27 year imprisonment on Robben Island.
From the New York Times, June 10, 1990:
C.I.A. TIE REPORTED IN MANDELA ARREST
The Central Intelligence Agency played an important role in the arrest in 1962 of Nelson Mandela, the African National Congress leader who was jailed for nearly 28 years before his release four months ago, a news report says.
The intelligence service, using an agent inside the African National Congress, provided South African security officials with precise information about Mr. Mandela's activities that enabled the police to arrest him, said the account by the Cox News Service.
The report, scheduled for publication on Sunday, quoted an unidentified retired official who said that a senior C.I.A. officer told him shortly after Mr. Mandela's arrest: ''We have turned Mandela over to the South African Security branch. We gave them every detail, what he would be wearing, the time of day, just where he would be.''
Mark Mansfield, a spokesman for the agency, declined to comment on the news-service report. ''As a matter of policy, we do not discuss allegations of intelligence activities,'' he said.
Protecting Pretoria's Rule
Reports that American intelligence tipped off the South African officials who arrested Mr. Mandela have circulated for years. Newsweek reported in February that the agency was believed to have been involved.
Mr. Mandela is scheduled to visit the United States beginning June 20 for a five-city tour that will include talks with President Bush and a speech before a joint meeting of Congress.
The news-service report said that at the time of Mr. Mandela's arrest in August 1962, the C.I.A. devoted more resources to penetrating the activities of nationalist groups like the African National Congress than did South Africa's then-fledgling security service.
The account said the American intelligence agency was willing to assist in the apprehension of Mr. Mandela because it was concerned that a successful nationalist movement threatened a friendly South African Govenment. Expansion of such movements outside South Africa's borders, the agency feared, would jeopardize the stability of other African states, the account said.
Arrest at a Roadblock
A retired South African intelligence official, Gerard Ludi, was quoted in the report as saying that at the time of Mr. Mandela's capture, the C.I.A. had put an undercover agent into the inner circle of the African National Congress group in Durban.
That agent provided the intelligence service with detailed accounts of the organization's activities, including information on the whereabouts of Mr. Mandela, then being sought as a fugitive for his anti-apartheid activities.
The morning after a secret dinner party with other congress members in Durban, Mr. Mandela, dressed as a chauffeur, ran into a roadblock. He was immediately recognized and arrested.
The retired official said that because of concern over the propriety of the C.I.A.'s actions in the Mandela case, ''higher authorities'' required that the State Department approve any similar operations in the future. The report said the State Department refused on at least three occasions to allow the agency to provide South African officials with information about other dissidents.

It’s not a strange alliance in that the elites such as the banking cartel are operating under the pretense of capitalism when in reality their goal is communism - where they can control the State and the State controls the people
As W. Cleon Skousen asks in The Naked Capitalist, “Have you ever wondered why some of the wealthiest people in the world have been financing Communism, Socialism, Black Panthers, SDS, Weathermen, and many other forms of violence and revolution?”
The reason is to gain economic and political power to seize the human and natural resources of the entire world, as they are currently doing.
A primary feature of the campaign for world government by the international bankers is the use of totalitarian control of countries they deal with and history shows that this control is generally socialist or communist in nature. As in South Africa, when it turned communist, it was only necessary for the international bankers to gain the cooperation of a handful of rulers who controlled the State. This cannot be done under true capitalism.
Only Communists, in order to confuse and obfuscate, call the activities of the international banks and the current Congress and President “capitalism.” These tyrants, who have taken over the control of our economic system, are the real enemies of capitalism; in the equity markets, for example, the banks have completely walled out entrepreneurs, retail investors and, yes, true capitalists and small businessmen.
And they have made discussion almost impossible because they have destroyed the true meaning of “capitalism.”
Dr. Carroll Quigley explains it all in Tragedy and Hope, the story of a secret power group (no longer so secret) that is gaining the necessary economic and political power to install world socialism, i.e., the “hope” of the world under the mailed fist of the bankers.
"it’s not a strange alliance in that the elites such as the banking cartel are operating under the pretense of capitalism when in reality their goal is communism - where they can control the State and the State controls the people"
Jr, it's stretch to define communism in that manner.
all corporations are "communist"
what?
the junkers believe that corporations don't centrally plan, forecast growth and investment opportunities, and assign specific roles and responsibilities to its staff with an expected entitlement for executing the inherent duties of said role?
nelson mandela = jesus figure
aw, so sorry to offend my fellow american fundamentalist, single-minded christian friends.
Yeah Mandela was an awoveed Communist at the time and the CIA/KGB were jockeying for position with the crumbling of the colonial system in Africa. I can undestand the actions the CIA took at the time given Mandela's record for violence & the stated goals of the ANC at the time. CIA made a choice between what they saw as the lesser of two evils even if the South African gov't was deplorable. To pretend that the Soviets wouldn't have interfered and set up a defacto state client in S. Africa is unrealistic bordering on naivete.
Still, I respect what Mandela did especially in the post-reconcilation period and the role he played in ensuring that there at least was widespread violent and racial violence and his philanthrophy work late in this life. He wasn't as affective though as a politician though especially in his economic policies and left scum in the ANC backed by Mbeki & his cronies take over.
"I respect what Mandela did especially in the post-reconcilation period"
Agreed.

It seems like an increasingly % of the posters on here at least are race-hating scumbags.
some of the usual suspects post here about the racccist comments, seems like they will ignore any and all negative information if it does not support the lefts aims, almost like say man made global warming, but come to think of it these hypocrits are on that team also, consistant anyway.
I'm going to pretend that you didn't say that...
I have always known that the CIA is the Biggest Terrorist Organization in the World. They back whoever the Money tells them too. Instigate riots, both sides, overthrow Governments and if given a chance I will attack and Maim any found working their System. The American Tax Payer doesn't realize how much damage they have done to Society World Wide.

Nelson Mandela = The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta (Italian: Sovrano Militare Ordine Ospedaliero di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme di Rodi e di Malta), also known as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM), Order of Malta or Knights of Malta, is a Roman Catholic lay religious order of, traditionally, a military, chivalrous and noble nature.[5] It is the world's oldest surviving order of chivalry.[6] The Sovereign Military Order of Malta is headquartered in Rome, and is widely considered a sovereign subject of international law.[7]
SMOM is the modern continuation of the original medieval order of Saint John of Jerusalem,[8] known as the "Fraternitas Hospitalaria" and later as the Knights Hospitaller, a group founded in Jerusalem about 1050 as an Amalfitan hospital to provide care for poor and sick pilgrims to the Holy Land. After the conquest of Jerusalem in 1099 during the First Crusade, it became a military order under its own charter. Following the loss of Christian held territories of the Holy Land to Muslims, the Order operated from Rhodes (1310–1523), and later from Malta (1530–1798), over which it was sovereign.
Although this state came to an end with the ejection of the Order from Malta by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Order as such survived. It retains its claims of sovereignty under international law and has been granted permanent observer status at the United Nations.[9] The order is notable for issuing its own international passports for travel, postal stamps, along with its formal insignia, often portrayed as a white or gold Maltese cross. The order nominally invokes the Blessed Virgin Mary under the venerated Marian title of "Our Lady of Mount Philermos" as its patroness and spiritual intercessor.
Today the order has about 13,000 members; 80,000 permanent volunteers; and 20,000 medical personnel including doctors, nurses, auxiliaries and paramedics in more than 120 countries.[3] The goal is to assist the elderly, handicapped, refugeed, children, homeless, those with terminal illness and leprosy in all parts of the world, without distinction of race or religion.[3] In several countries—including France, Germany and Ireland—the local associations of the Order are important providers of first aid training, first aid services and emergency medical services. Through its worldwide relief corps—Malteser International—the Order is also engaged to aid victims of natural disasters, epidemics and armed conflicts.
In February 2013 the order celebrated its 900th anniversary recognising the Papal bull of sovereignty "Pie Postulatio Voluntatis" formally issued by Pope Paschal II on 15 February 1113, with a general audience given by Pope Benedict XVI[10] and a Holy Mass celebrated by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone at Saint Peter's Basilica.
One of the lessons here needs to be that just because you get sent to jail, doesn't mean your political career is over. Sometimes, and in the case of Mandela, going to jail boosts your politician ambitions. Like Bo Xilai.
Mandela rejected Mr. Jensen's boardroom speech in 'Network' (1976). Nothing could be done.
when has the white house ever lowered the flag to half-mast for any other world leader?
I don't like this.
“Why did our current Commander in Chief order all United States flags to be flown at half mast for a Socialist, Communist former leader of a terrorist organization upon his death, and not for Prime Minister Thatcher when she passed earlier this year?” – comment on The Rant

JR, you are making it painful for anybody to take you seriously...
In all modesty it has to be said.
Perhaps, after reading my painful post this afternoon, falak, you could follow the advice provided for the woman with cancer who wouldn't qualify for an Obamacare procedure, and just take a pain pill as Doc Obama prescribed.
As you've said before, falak, your hero is FDR. And as I"ve said before, you've got your man in Barack Obama, a.k.a. Roosevelt Jr. He's in the driver's seat now, and apparently you're happy being taken along for the ride. Too bad that you live in France. Which reminds me, how's that Hollande socialism workin' out for ya? Seriously...
you compare the two?
Get used to it, you should know by now there's nothing to like about the half black cracker.

Why are we mourning the loss of a black nationalist Marxist? My only regret is that he didn't die at birth.
The interpretation on "reality" then has nothing to with today's "reality"
GOD BLESS AMERICA
Apartheid was a grave injustice, but I remember I was once in a Wimpy Bar in East London (a wanna-be McDonalds, at the time there were economic sanctions) and shortly after I left a limpet mine exploded, killing ten people or so (not sure anymore of the precise number, this was in 1988). Anyway, Wimpy's was at the time known for defying apartheid laws, it served all races. The ANC's military arm decided to bomb it anyway (Maybe they wanted to send a message, although I sure have no idea what it was. Probably it was just a target of opportunity). The Boere weren't any better of course, they erected a brutal police state to keep apartheid going, and their road was well plastered with corpses as well.
As to Mandela's beliefs in communism, he ditched them within a few weeks of his release. Shortly before his release FW de Klerk had met with Shevardnadse (then the Soviet foreign minister) in Namibia. It was never officially divulged what they talked about, but it is a good guess that Shevardnadse assured de Klerk the sugar daddy in Moscow would no longer support South Africa's communist party (which by the way was one of the few political parties in the world that pronounced itself happy with Gennady Yanayev's putsch attempt - for obvious reasons). Anyway, it seemed clear to me at the time that de Klerk must have gotten assurances from the Soviets. When Mandela was released, his first speech still contained references to 'nationalizing the commanding heights of the economy' - it was the first and last time he said that. The comrades quickly brought him up to speed on the fact that the world had moved on. The communist party remained allied with the ANC, but at no point between Mandela's release and the 1994 election did the ANC try to campaign on communist issues. In fact, once it got into power it actually rolled back many of the nationalizations the apartheid regime had undertaken. Mind, today the ANC is a thoroughly corrupted organization, incapable of meaningful reform.
Assurances from the Soviets? Like when they told the Poles in Warsaw to start the uprising against the Germans, then after they did, sat back and watched them get annihilated by the SS penal brigades? Those type of assurances? South Africa was sold out by the west, just like Rhodesia was. They even knew communist where waiting in the wings to take over both nations, but yet they proceeded. Connecting the dots yet?
The same 1% that are falling all over themselves to Honour Mandela and the end of apartheit in S Africa are the same 1% that support and finance the apartheit forced on Palestine and the theft of their lands.
Mandela was a card-carrying communist.
1 less collectivist scumbag to worry about.
