1 In 4 Europeans At Risk Of Poverty

Tyler Durden's picture

As bonds and stocks soar, and Europe's leaders continue to proclaim victory, despite Draghi's downbeat jawboning as EUR surges to growth-crushing levels, it is well known that the employment situation remains abysmal in the real economy. However, what is worse that the red-flashing-headlines of record youth (and total) unemployment is, as Bloomberg's Niraj Shah notes, 125 million people in the EU were at risk of pverty or social exclusion. According to Eurostat, that is 24.8% of the population. Almost half of Bulgarians faced economic hardship and Greece had the highest poverty rate in the euro area at 34.6% (though if Stournaras was to be believed this weekend, their problems are solved).

fonz, just looked one minute of it, and I'm sorry, it's not

the Brussels team is 30k strong (slightly larger than the US Secret Service team, which is 22k strong) but it's composed out of 28 nationalities. most of them have their primary residence outside of Belgium. this would mean 28 tax systems to care for

paying them (with national funds) and then taxing them would mean a lot of additional bureaucracy. a lot of bitching, and a lot of additional costs

just the usual Brit MEP bitching about something most EU countries anyway do as a matter of fact - i.e. giving their Civil Servants a tax-free salary

Hey Ghordius, I have gotten some feedback as well that this is not what I thought it was. I think it would be easier however to start with the hangings and then sort everything else out after.

No, this is not Marc Dutroux, but a Belgian father of 3 - two daughters of 17 and 12 and a son of 15 - who would kill any man that would lay his hands on one of his children, and I mean I would literally kill him and then willingly go to jail for it.

But check you facts and prove your point or shut up. Or do you really think that the existence of a Charles Manson group, a Ted Bundy or an Adam lanza in your country automatically implies that your politicians slaughter pregnant women like pigs, are serial killers or shoot innocent children?

You can literally walk around Brussels without seeing one solitary attractive female, and if you do stumble upon one, she's probably from Tunisia or Sub Saharan Africa. I guess that's where the good beer comes into play. And gotta love that weather. Yessiree - give me 250 days of rain a year! Just can't beat that.

those countries with strong savings and social nets can face the down turn better, EVEN if their banks burn in meltdown. A nation state can resuscitate its economy faster, nationalise finance and restart banking, if there is SOCIAL COHESION and discipline and people do not OVER MISTRUST their state power to the point of falling into rebellious anarchy.

A financial meltdown of electronic money the country can survive; the social meltdown is much more difficult to ride out in a democracy; its fall out is return to Despotism à la Franco or Mussolini or worse!

Just look around us; Syria and Libya and Egypt, no state structure or democracy...Thailand : we'll find out.

Meanwhile our western oligarchs are feeling the heat from this ever increasing challenge to Democracy :

one can definitely predict fascist regimes resurging soon all across europe

Throughout the European history, the most successful states were not nation states, but city states. The only real reason for nation states was their ability to field large armies. In today's Europe those are not needed anymore. Hence, a drift/tendency towards smaller units, where average citizens can actually influence their own lives, has surfaced again. In contrast, the European Union is an attempt to keep political and economical power centralized to a tiny elite. If you're looking for Fascism, look no further than Brussels.

Decentralization will win on the long run, but it seems the puppet masters won't let go easily. It has to get worse before it gets better.

yes and no. there is a push towards regions becoming sovereign. yet it's because of the EU "umbrella". have a look, every separatist movement in Europe wishes for EU membership. every and each one. it's the nation-states that deny them the automatic right to membership (example: Spain with Catalunya). the EU is still a nation-state club

of course as usual the UK might break the ground, then it really might give independence to Scotland. and then push for an automatic membership of it's sister. yet Spain, France, Italy, Belgium and other nation-states with breakaway-wannabe provinces are likely to vote against, in the Council, and put the new sovereign Kingdom at the back of the line of accession

meanwhile yes, in Brussels you have a concentration of economic policy power (as long as it is related to the common market etc.), including the equivalent of K-Street with all the lobbyists. yet not political power. example: nobody in Brussels can tell France to intervene militarily in Mali or not. That decision is done exclusively in Paris. Or, of course, partly in Paris and partly in Washington

and no, monetary policy is not done in Brussels, it's done in Frankfurt

in fact, if you look at what really goes on in Brussels, the real political "added value" is the many mandatory meetings of the national governments (aka Council)

stop painting the EU in the terms of our most fervent federalists. you are just helping them with that. in fact, nearly every American commenting on the EU seems to do that

it ain't a copy of the US

Mon, 12/09/2013 - 15:28 | 4230006 W74
W74's picture

You forgot that mililtary interventions are determined in Tel Aviv, not in Washington.  Also, Europe is at the behest of banker fucks.  Period.  And why do you think separatist movements want to be a part of the EU?  Maybe some do, but do you really think that ethnic nationalists even if they do separate from their former nation-state (ex: Catalonia from Spain; Scotland from UK; etc.) that they're going to subvert their new found freedom and soverignty to the EU?

The Greek finance minister Stournaras is a piece of sh*%#. In a few days time the government will have the power to demand details of any taxpayer's banking profile and will be able to make direct withdrawls from any person's account. Tax collectors have him worried after they started accessing the files of parliamentarians and are asking how his own mother is able to survive on €500 per month.

The government is about to accept a European demand for massive home foreclosure sales and constantly lies about the state of its finances. There is still no real primary surplus so it is clear that Germany aims to asset strip Greece as a means of recouping some its losses.

It has at the request of the Europeans and the Americans attacked the fringe party of Golden Dawn because of the surge in its popularity by imprisoning certain of its members on spurious charges. To date this has proven to be a farce.

Friends tell me that the sight of people going through rubbish bins no longer elicits disbelief.

Close to 350,000 people annually have their electricity cut off with 40% unable to have it reconnected. Children faint in classrooms from hunger. The record youth unemployment would have been far worse without the thousands who have emigrated.

The worst for Greece is yet to come. The same goes for Spain.

After so any years of the Greek GDP plunging one has to wonder whether the policies were in fact meant to fail in order that some other sadistic agenda could be implemented.
