WTF Chart Of The Day: SBUX Edition

Tyler Durden's picture

Of course, we are sure this will be dismissed by any and all stock pushers as perfectly normal and possible... but an hour of trading in SBUX in a 1c range seems a little too much for even the biggest efficient market believer...

This is SBUX - not a fucking penny stock!

Seriously -- There was some kind of a problem with the order-entry messaging subsystems at a few exchanges.  I received a note from my data feed / broker telling us about the problem -- and that the problem has now been fixed.

Somebody probably put in a "large" order instead of a "Venti" order and that fucked everything up for an hour.

The way these stocks are controlled reminds me of using audio recording equipment back in college ... compressors, limiters, expanders, attenuators, VCA's, VCO's, gates, etc.  It really is the same thing and HFT essentially views price data a pure signal flux.  You can consider each stock price a channel, group it into a larger "bus", apply processing to the "bus", etc.

Perfectly normal.  Nothing to see here, move along.

Used to day trade in the late 90s during the internet boom and would see this all the time for major stocks. Typically a mutual fund decides to sell a few million shares and finds a buyer at an agreed on price. The transaction is conducted on the exchange with the buyer holding the bid up. When it's done it's back to the normal intra-day swings.
