Meanwhile, Russia Casually Announces It Will Use Nukes If Attacked

Tyler Durden's picture

With the Ukraine situation increasingly precarious, and now even the US state department getting involved with the occasional unexpected harsh warning...

  • U.S. MAY CONSIDER SANCTIONS ON UKRAINE: STATE DEPT

... into what Putin has made very clear is his brand new sphere of influence (it is unclear just why the US is responding in such a way: did the pro-Europe protesters not use Made in the US tear gas or chemical weapons?), Russia casually threw it out there earlier today that it would use nuclear weapons if it comes under an attack. As vice prime minister and defense industry chief made clear, "One can experiment as long as one wishes by deploying non-nuclear warheads on strategic missile carriers. But one should keep in mind that if there is an attack against us, we will certainly resort to using nuclear weapons in certain situations to defend our territory and state interests." Just in case it wasn't quite clear...

Rogozin pointed out that this principle is enshrined in Russia’s military doctrine. Any aggressor or group of aggressors should be aware of that, he said. “We have never diminished the importance of nuclear weapons – the weapon of requital – as the great balancer of chances,” Rogozin said.

More from RT:

Russia’s Fund of Perspective Researches (FPI) will develop a military response to the American Conventional Prompt Global Strike (PGS) strategy, Dmitry Rogozin told the State Duma.

So far, the FPI has already looked at over a thousand proposed ideas and plans to work on 60 projects, eight of which are top priority, the politician said. He refused to disclose any details, but said that one of those projects is focused on preparing a response to the PGS, which is the “main strategy” that the Pentagon is nurturing.

PGS would allow the United States to strike targets anywhere on the planet, with conventional weapons in as little as an hour.

As Rogozin explained earlier, the strategy would give America an advantage over a nuclear state, thanks to their better technical capabilities with weaponry, including the speed, RIA Novosti cited.

So if nothing else, at least the primary deterrence strategy of the cold war has just made a roaring comeback. We can only hope that with such skilled heads of the State Department as John Kerry, that the nuclear exchange that was avoided for the duration of the first cold war doesn't somehow become a GDP-boosting reality.

FOURTEEN SIGNPOSTS TO SLAVERY

1. Restrictions on taking money out of the country and on the establishment or retention of a foreign bank account by an American citizen.

2. Abolition of private ownership of hand guns.

3. Detention of individuals without judicial process.

4. Requirements that private financial transactions be keyed to social security numbers or other government identification so that government records of these transactions can be kept and fed into a computer.

5. Use of compulsory education laws to forbid attendance at presently existing private schools.

6. Compulsory non-military service.

7. Compulsory psychological treatment for non-government workers or public school children.

8. An official declaration that anti-Communist organizations are subversive and subsequent legal action taken to suppress them.

9. Laws limiting the number of people allowed to meet in a private home.

10. Any significant change in passport regulations to make passports more difficult to obtain or use.

11. Wage and price controls, especially in a non-wartime situation

12. Any kind of compulsory registration with the government of where individuals work.

13. Any attempt to restrict freedom of movement within the United States.

14. Any attempt to make a new major law by executive decree (that is, actually put into effect, not merely authorized as by existing executive orders.)

This was compiled many years ago, and I think we can check most off the list....

It's by design. If you look at everything these fugnuts have written in the past, and their actions, then it becomes clear: They hate the US. Now they are in a position where they don't care if the country self-implodes economically or gets melted in a huge nuclear fireball... They have the means now to escape with their lives, even if it's only temporary, as I'm sure someone will hunt them down no matter where they go...

Though that's the rub.  I think Russia is beginning to realize that they are a huge contender once again, this is incredibly true in the event of a global financial collapse, they're going to be one of those "last nations standing."  Still have a huge export market (oil!), have virtually no debt, and they... you know... still manufacture things.

The title is misleading. It's old news. Russia's current military doctrine was announced over 13 years ago:

Putin Signs New Military Doctrine, Fleshing Out Security Concept

Philipp C. Bleek

THE RUSSIAN SECURITY Council approved and President Vladimir Putin signed a new military doctrine April 21 that replaces the doctrine adopted in 1993 and "fleshes out" the military policy elaborated in Russia's 2000 national security concept, formally adopted in January. (See ACT, January/February 2000.) Like the security concept, the new doctrine appears to lower Russia's threshold for using nuclear weapons when attacked with conventional weapons. It also explicitly states that Russia's nuclear deterrent can be used to respond to all "weapons of mass destruction" attacks and reaffirms Russia's negative security assurances to non-nuclear- weapon states. (See document.)

Yeah, this is really old news. It's just a continuation of policy from the time the USSR was in existence. Way back then, they said the same thing and even added a bit of color, namely that they would respond to attacks with nukes, but that they wouldn't initiate an attack with nukes.

Anyone thinking that this is either 1) a new policy or 2) particularly hostile has a fairly short memory in terms of foreign policy. Though neither side really discusses it much, the details behind nuke use were essentially hashed out collectively betweent the US and USSR decades ago, and there really hasn't been any issue about there.

(There have been a lot of issues over delivery systems, ABMs, and theatre-defense missles over the years, with missile defense in Poland being one of the more recent points of sensitivity.)

I think the news people must have gotten orders to sex this up, probably to take attention of the laundry list of failures of this admin and give the POTUS a chance to look tough in order to life his poll numbers from the "peasants about to revolt" range.

They shoiuld reactivate The Arm of Death system from 70s. It's a kind of SkyNet system that launches itself in case all russians are killed by the first strike. I think it was disabled under Gorbachev... System would launch missles automatically if communication between command centers is lost... Good thing they didn't have Windows OS back then :)

It's all Russia has. It's military is made up of a bunch of alcoholic has beens. Just look at the last 20 years. 2000 Chechen fighters brought the whole Russian army to it's knees. They had to regroup and  practically carpet bomb the entire country because they couldn't take it mano to mano.

Then there was the Georgian conflict. I was surprised it worked out for them. I guess it helps when all the Russians you have living in Georgia give you a hand.

Anyone who thinks that the Russians are a professional fighting force has no clue. Bunch of drunks is what they are all paid with mafia money. How else can you get them to attack their own brothers and sisters.

So the nuclear option is all they have because they wouldn't stand a chance against any decent fighting force, i.e. Britain, US, Germany, etc.....

The whole point of contention about which side Ukraine should belong rests solemly on the calculated time for Russian tank armies to reach Paris. Swaying Ukraine to the West gives extra few hours to set up those Blue Peacock nuclear mines along Elbe (or is it now Oder?). Either way the tanks are comming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZxXp689Grw

"Attorney Charles Bonner, one of the team representing sailors from the USS Ronald Reagan: They are not only going to the rescue by jumping into the water and rescuing people out of the water, but they were drinking desalinated sea water, bathing in it, until finally the captain of the USS Ronald Reagan alarmed people that they were encountering high levels of radiation. As a result of this exposure, the 51 sailors that we represent right now have come down with a host of medical problems, including cancers and leukemias, all kinds of gynecological problems [...]  people who are going blind, pilots who had perfect eyesight but now have tumors on the brain. These service men and women are young people 21, 22, 23 years old and no one in their family had ever (inaudible) any of these kinds of illnesses before. The only causal link for these kinds of illnesses is this exposure to radiation, high levels of radiation when they responded to this Operation Tomadachi."

Zbigniew Brzezinski will make sure that any nucelar war will be fought between Russia and China. Thats the game he is playing since 2008 when they started to push the Mid-East-crazy Neocons aside.
By starving China of resources, sea access, and finally turning it against Russia he will be a worthy successor of the old imperial schemers Earl Grey, LLoyd George, George Buchanan, Averell Harrimann, Prescott Bush, Clarence Dillon and Montagu Norman who brought us full spectrum Anglo-US dominance V1 (through WW1 + red & brown dictators + WW2). All wars take place in Eurasia where they belong. If only they can replace the chess players in Moscow with another stooge ...

Sanctions?  Let me get this right:

1. The Ukranian people want to be part of the European trading block.  Check!

2. THe US State Dept. wants to hit the Ukraine with sanctions to punish the government for joining the Russian block.  Check!

3. Are the politicians going to suffer from the sanctions?  Or will it be the little guy in street?  My guess is the guy in the street.  Check.

You know what?  I was feeling pretty good this morning until I read Tyler's last paragraph.  Especially the part about cooler heads in the State Dept like John Kerry.

In conclusion:  "WE ARE DOOMED!" (quote attributed to Peter Lorre, pic a film, he said it in most of them.)

The reason the world did not have a full scale nuclear war during the cold war was due to the fact that the world was governed by people that lived through the horrors of WWII. These people are gone now and now we are stuck with people that are willing to chance everything.
