What The Chinese Really Think Of The Shanghai Smog

Tyler Durden's picture

Despite the government's "adjustments" of the 'safe' pollution level, and reassurances that smog is good for you, the following awful clip of what real Shanghai residents think may change some perspectives... "I don't think it's fit for humans to live in this kind of environment... but I have no choice, I have to go to work."

Remember - this is not fog - it's pollution-dense smog...

The war with China has already been won...

Our trade deficit with China gave them:

A growing middle class to challenge the Politburo.

A constantly devaluing paper currency in exchange for low cost goods.

Pollution of their environmentg that will take them years and $ to repair.

Sure it sucks that we destroyed our manufacturing jobs, but some may yet comeback as China has to deal with it's own currencies appreciation. Splitting the Sino/Soviet alliance and avoiding Nuclear War might be worth it in hindsight.

Habit

Habit is thus the enormous fly-wheel of society, its most precious conservative agent. It alone is what keeps us all within the bounds of ordinance, and saves the children of fortune from the envious uprisings of the poor. It alone prevents the hardest and most repulsive walks of life from being deserted by those brought up to tread therein. It keeps the fisherman and the deck-hand at sea through the winter; it holds the miner in his darkness, and nails the countryman to his log-cabin and his lonely farm through all the months of snow; it protects us from invasion by the natives of the desert and the frozen zone. It dooms us all to fight out the battle of life upon the lines of our nurture or our early choice, and to make the best of a pursuit that disagrees, because there is no other for which we are fitted, and it is too late to begin again. It keeps different social strata from mixing. Already at the age of twenty-five you see the professional mannerism settling down on the young commercial traveller, on the young doctor, on the young minister, on the young counsellor-at-law. You see the little lines of cleavage running through the character, the tricks of thought, the prejudices, the ways of the 'shop,' in a word, from which the man can by-and-by no more escape than his coat-sleeve can suddenly fall into a new set of folds. On the whole, it is best he should not escape. It is well for the world that in most of us, by the age of thirty, the character has set like plaster, and will never soften again.

The pictures of Pittsburgh in the 40s and 50s aren't much different. The fact that street lights were on at noon some days says a lot. I love Pittsburgh now, it's a great city. Almost as big as Toledo.

This is an easy, and somewhat inexpensive, fix. Even bad coal ash can be scrubbed from from the stacks.  The Chinese are just stupid and cheap.  Incidentally, they are in line to have more diabetics in thier country than the rest of the world combined. Who has to go to war with them? They're wiping themselves out becoming "westernized".

That is correct.
Population of Pittsburgh:
1930 - 670,000
2010 - 305,000

You mearly have to half the population, shutter all the high volume industrial sites, and switch from an industrial economy to one centered on universities, hospitals, and welfare recipient farming. Air problem solved....

Re: Incidentally, they are in line to have more diabetics in thier country than the rest of the world combined.

Pollution may increase kids’ risk for diabetes

In this new study, published in the journal Diabetologica, researchers examined blood samples taken from 387 10-year-old children. Researchers discovered the children living in areas with greater exposure to air pollution had significantly higher insulin levels than children living in lower-pollution areas.

http://www.foxnews.com/health/2013/05/10/pollution-may-increase-kids-risk-for-diabetes/

However one can easily eliminate diabetes risk quite easily:

http://diabetesrisk.net/

Thu, 12/12/2013 - 13:57 | 4240273 Smiddywesson
Smiddywesson's picture

Correlation is not causation.  Places with higher air pollution levels tend to be more urban areas.  Take a look around our inner cities, the poor are fat and eat swill.  With parents like that, of course their kids have higher blood insulin levels.  Even among the non-poor, you have two income families that don't cook, and kids who don't go outside to play.  You have latch key kids who feed themselves cereal for lunch or even dinner.

Statistics don't always mean what people say they mean.
