US, Chinese Warships "Nearly Collide" In South China Sea

Tyler Durden's picture

With the recent deployment of China's air defenze zone, and the subsequent announcement of a comparable zone by South Korea which overlaps not only with China's own, but with that of Japan, it almost seems like a scenario designed to provoke an escalating conflict on the tiniest of provocations is actively being produced. A scenario such as the one US defense officials revealed today, when a guided missile cruiser operating in international waters in the South China Sea was forced to take evasive action last week to avoid a collision with a Chinese navy ship maneuvering nearby.

Hold on: how can two massive ships, visible to the naked eye and certainly to radar from hundreds of miles away, "nearly collide"?

Reuters reports that the incident took place on December 5 and involved the USS Cowpens. The Pacific Fleet statement did not offer details about what led to the near-collision.

But it did say the incident underscored the need for the "highest standards of professional seamanship, including communications between vessels, to mitigate the risk of an unintended incident or mishap."

The rest of the story is widely known:

Beijing declared the air defense zone over the East China Sea late last month and demanded that aircraft flying through the area provide it with flight plans and other information.

The United States and its allies rejected the Chinese demand and have continued to fly military aircraft into the zone, which includes air space over a small group of islands claimed by China but currently administered by Tokyo.

In the midst of the tensions over the air defense zone, China deployed its only aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, to the South China Sea for maneuvers. Beijing claims most of the South China Sea and is involved in territorial disputes in the region with several of its neighbors.

And so, the waters have been tested, so to speak, with a media "warning" on just how brazen China can be when it comes to its "aggressive" tactics in what we are confident the Chinese media will describe as its own maritime territory, begging the question of just who was provoking whom, especially since the response to a Chinese missile cruiser sailing idly by New York or San Francisco, even if in "international waters", would hardly see the same controlled reaction by the US.

Then again, it has been only two weeks since China's most recent "escalation." We are confident that given time, this will be the least of the close shipping encounters that involve Chinese, US, Japanese and/or Korean navies in the East China Sea. After all, one must think of all that, GDP that as WWII taught us, can be easiest gained through some modest, or not so modest, international conflict.

WOAR if you are really on your way out, all the best to you. Stay safe.

Consider this at some point. The MIC is probably the largest component of the FSA.

Yep, I'm on way out for at least 6 weeks, if not more.

"The MIC is probably the largest component of the FSA"

Only as long as there's no "SHTF" scenario. I trust military types to do better in the long run than someone who sits on a couch and eats twinkies on somebody else's dime. At least the MIC is physically fit, and knows the basics of building infrastructure (ALL branches have some form of civil engineering, whether it's Power Production/Telecoms or building bridges).

Sure, there will be the bad bunch that would tear off and take things from other people...but I bet there would be more that could resourcefully make a contribution to society. Especially if the lower rank Officers could keep shit together, but that's an unknown.

All in all, I'd rather risk being in the military than going back to my dead end job and going nowhere. At least in this army, I'm not asking for a handout. I'm willing to work for a better life. That's my perspective on things.

A good percentage of the "lifers" in the military are shitbirds that couldn't make it on the outside.  My advice is to stay low to avoid radar and to strongly encourage your comrades to remember their oath to uphold the Constitution.

And remember in your dead end job you aren't working for the people that are cleaning out the taxpayer's coffers and killing innocent people for their resources.

Dizzy: My mother always told me that violence doesn't solve anything.

Jean Rasczak: Really? I wonder what the city founders of Hiroshima would have to say about that.

[to Carmen]

Jean Rasczak: You.

Carmen: They wouldn't say anything. Hiroshima was destroyed.

Jean Rasczak: Correct. Naked force has resolved more conflicts throughout history than any other factor. The contrary opinion, that violence doesn't solve anything, is wishful thinking at its worst; people who forget that always die.

My dead end job was working for a pork processing facility that hired illegal immigrants and gave me a raise of .25 cents. On a four year contract. That doesn't even cover inflation, and I was earning barely enough to eat and live...renting a room from my parents.

I'm sorry to say but there are no good options. I don't have the money to start a business myself, I have no skills to do so, and working at any dead end job is just as bad as the alternative I chose.

That's the reality. You can't run from it, and neither can I. I am making my choice. You have made yours. That's all we can do.

No judgement here.  I am just trying to give you information I didn't have offered to me.  Just try not to do anything you can't live with later on.  I know the Air Force is in the rear with the gear most of the time, but if your unit is responsible for innocent deaths is your paycheck going to be worth it still?

Do you really want to be overseas if TSHTF?  Think the gov will get you back home to take care of your family?  They will use you like a paper plate and throw you away when they're done.  Don't forget it.

Fri, 12/13/2013 - 20:06 | 4245213 WOAR
WOAR's picture

I understand. I'll have to cross those bridges when I get there.

Besides, if you're talking about being complicit, just repairing the gear is helping kill people. Just like working for my dead end job was helping kill people, only more slowly. Hence, dead end.

Better to learn useful skills, and have to cross bridges when I come to them, than die slowly and achieve nothing. That's all I have to say about that.

I hope that you've done well with yourself, and I respect the choices you've made as well. To each their own.

I don't hold the military in contempt like others do. Now, the brass, from about BG on up, I don't trust em as far as I could throw them.

My dad was in WWII, brother-in-law in Nam & Korea (where there were no nukes in Korea of course, even though he had one strapped to his ass driving around with it, he just laughed when he told me what a bunch of lying bastards they are) he went on to be a DI at Ft. Benning, his son, also served in Nam.

A part of his son's humanity stayed there, in Nam.

Be careful...the object is to come back in one piece...body & mind...whatever it takes.

Take care and do stay in touch with your brothers & sisters here at the Hedge, when you're off base of course ;-)

It sounds like you're in for a huge surprise.  I spent a few years in the nuclear side of the USN starting 2003 and am from a SMALL rural town in upper northwest.  It was a eye-opening experience, to say the least, and on more accounts than being introduced to the FSA and the thug-life, if you know what I mean. Also, don't you think it's a little soon to be assuming orders to Guam?  USAF has bases all over the country...Langley...

"At least in this army, I'm not asking for a handout. I'm willing to work for a better life." Working for the MIC for exchange of $ IS a handout of sorts.  I couldn't take that aspect of it, and let's just say things went south.  Joined for money, as well.  Got a well-paying civilian career out of it, and some friends I would have never met otherwise; but that period in my life was tough because I was aware that I was selling my soul and was a part of a "team" which was wreaking havoc on innocents all over the planet. Some days I wish I could take it all back and 'lose' everything I currently have...

At the end of the day, you know what's right, and what needs to be done.  Do it.

Have you ever watched Ben-Hur?

When Ben-Hur was offered to become a Roman citizen, was it right for him to turn it down because Romans were evil? Or, could he have made himself a good Roman, and been the change he wanted to see in the system?

It's a hard choice in reality, because both ways are valid. One is just as fruitless as the other, but both ways are valid (By rejecting Roman citizenship, the Romans stay the same amount of evil, and even when you join the group, there's no guarantee you can change anything).

We all have to make choices. I understand what I'm getting into.

Pretty sure WOAR said a support role.

But it doesn't really matter once in, does it? When someones trying to kill you. My dad went in as a cook and found himself behind a Browning facing a banzai charge.

Those were not "innocent citizens"...they were really REALLY trying to kill him.

And yet...here I am, thanks to him not crawling into a tent and waiting for a bayonet from an "innocent citizen" because the gunner got killed.

Lives, past & present, are funny that way ;-)

At least the MIC is physically fit

Maybe not. Soldiers, sailors, and airmen are regularly required to take large numbers of inoculations, some of which (e.g., anthrax) are known to have a risk of bad reactions. They are exposed to toxic materials (e.g., depleted uranium) for long periods of time. Airmen often have to take amphetamines to stay alert on long flights.

In addition, war as currently fought is psychologically destructive. More American soldiers die by suicide than are killed by the enemy. The military passes out psychotropic medications like candy, and many of those medicines also have a risk of bad reactions.

And if you are injured, the quality of care you will receive varies widely between different VA centers.

There are a lot of veterans living on the street. The military messed those guys up, physically and mentally. Lots of kids trying to get ahead in life are ending up disabled instead, and the government couldn't care less.

A little unsolicited advice from an X Navy guy. To make it through basic as easily as possible it is best to not stand out, don't do anything(good or bad) to draw attention to yourself and don't volunteer for anything. Who knows?  Maybe they’ve already shipped a couple of their “devices” in containers being carried by Uncle Warren’s railcars.  While granma and grampa are being frisked by TSA operatives tons of this junk flies through Long Beach, Oakland and Seattle on flatbeds only to be activated a la WWII Japanese fire balloons / German V2 random detonations.

I guess the biggest downside is the loss of the container(s) US citizens would’ve been able to use as housing units, (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-24610434)  now that the rule of law re: mortgage instruments and proper recordation process has been glossed over and “settled” by the feds.

That is a great point which is not talked about much, but the truth is that the vaunted aircraft carriers require a huge escort and logistical footprint.

They are floating weapons platforms that are used to "project power", but are only good against the usual suspects who don't have significant naval forces, air force, or anti-ship missiles.

Cruisers or Destroyers with Aegis are a must if there are any threats tronger than a patrol gunboat. If you add subs to the picture, you will require much more.

They are fast becoming obsolete, and many naval theorists bellieve they will prove as effective as the Maginot Line against a worthy adversary.

your statements reveal a lot about you and the  "propaganda"  media sources to which you subscribe. are you being farmed?  or is it simply your desire?

if you're going to blame .gov, then you must also blame the insurance providers and the american health care industry itself, including doctors and medical universities + institutions.  the entire system is based on a quest for maximizing revenue and profit.  i think it's a sad state of affairs when we have to  incentivize good behaviors in this way. but, maybe i'm just a dreamer?

thankfully, there are some people trying to figure out how to make health systems work more efficiently and effectively for the world:

Global Public Health – Ecological Foundations approaches public health principles and applications with a fluent community-oriented perspective. Drawing from issues and examples from around the world, with equal emphasis on developing countries, it puts forward unifying concepts and integrated approaches that are perhaps unique among public health textbooks. There are numerous case studies, from contemporary issues confronting disease prevention and control to cutting edge topics such as problem gambling, gun control, and efforts to redress the systematic abuse of colonized minorities. By achieving global reach through cooperative, community-based interventions, it argues that the practical application of both public health and ecological principles can help maintain the health of the world’s people.  Blending established wisdom with new perspectives, this new book will stimulate better understanding of how the different streams of public health can work more synergistically to promote global health equity. It is a foundation for future public health measures to be built and to succeed. - See more at: http://blogs.lshtm.ac.uk/alumni/2013/02/21/global-public-health-ecologic...

The first female pilot to attempt a carrier landing blew herself up in a fireball that incinerated about a dozen sailors. China's military (and most other militaries for that matter) don't deal with any chick fighter pilots or feminazis telling them what to do.

I wouldn't worry about those vote too much as there has been quite an influx of assholes around here of late.  If they are not attacking Tyler, they are attacking WB7 or anyone else who makes a sane comment.  They just dinked YHC-FTSE's comment above which was a great comment.  They have done it to a lot of people without having the guts to explain why.  There appear to be a quite a few of them though I suspect from observation that they are a few with many screen names.  They use this tactic as a force multiplier.  We can do that as well if need be.

Maybe the captain thought it was a UNESCO world heritage site and decided to crash into it like USS Guardian did earlier this year.  Crashing and bombing protected coral reefs seems to be popular with the navy these days.

You have to wonder about people who start masturbating at the thought of war: The sick fucks who anticipate mass murder by our teens on their teens with glee, the cunts brimming with hate using the opportunity to incite more hate, the armchair generals and military gadget nerds wetting their diapers at every acronym, repeating every ultra-hush-hush special op emergency standby as if they were in operations, living vicariously through those in uniform who, if they are remotely sane,  would rather not get their limbs blown off thank you very much, or spend the rest of their lives crippled in mind and body for some vague political agenda that nobody is going to care about in a couple of years thousands of miles away from home. Yes. You have to wonder about the cowards and hypocrites who apparently love the men (& women ) in the armed forces so much, that they keep shoving the poor bastards into war zones all the time.

Fuck the MIC. A war with a nuclear armed adversary with unstoppable delivery systems means just one thing morons.  Game over for everything on this tiny insignificant ball of molten dirt with a thin crust of life living on it. The Pentagon casualty estimates for a nuclear exchange are a joke that do not include the meltdowns of every nuclear power station, radiation, plagues and untreated illnesses that follow the breakdown of frontline services, starvation and civil war. That's if you're "lucky" enough to miss one of thousands of high yield nukes flung our way. No place on earth will be survivable afterwards, so remember that you fucking retards and for god's sake look at yourselves in the mirror the next time you start egging each other on at the prospect of seeing other men die for your pride and glory. Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a Collision.
Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.
Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.
Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.
Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States' Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. I demand that YOU change your course 15 degrees north, that's one five degrees north, or countermeasures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.

DEFINITION of Time:    'The Uncommon`Sense of a Golden`Anniversary in a Faux`Irredentist Darwinian World?'

' a symbiotic anomaly of variable enigma's, nuturing humanities mutated offspring destined for a future lost, alas... in the past-- beguiled by a intellectual deception...  that of the surreal presence of a latent existence?'

Explaination,... please:  In mid-1971 Kissinger (Nixon's, U.S. Nat'l. Security Advisor? [from nowhere land?]) holds secret meeting (talks) in China. The Pakistani government was instrumental in helping to arrange the secret meetings. Months later in Oct/1971 the United States opens China up to the Western Capitalist(USSA?)/Marxist(China?) co-op U.S. Trading Agreement!

On August 15, 1971, Nixon abolishes the 1944 Bretton Woods Treaty (U.S. Gold Standard) and devalues the U.S. Dollar! The $$$ is now backed by nothing but, 'Faith and HOPE[change-- $0.05? today]'... the FIAT`ski!, issuing Executive Order #11615!!!

So, we have no moar 'Gold Standard', and because of Nixon's , and the 'Fat Mans',`Hank(?) fondness for  China($?$)... Taiwan (ROC) loses its seat on the United Nations (UN) and is replaced by China in Oct/1971!?! But, to prove his word (?) and worth Tricky Dick meets vis-a-vis with Mao Zedong in China in early 1972! Hence, we have now (in real time?) reached, 'the year of our lord' 2013, approx. 42 years since the great inception with a mere eight (8) years left (2021?) for the glorious 'Golden Anniversary'-- the crowning/ adorning of the 'Golden (Real Gold) Dragon' that will surely be in control of the world tommorrow as it is surely today (with Russia's LOVE?) as we know it,... or is this all "MAD' gibberish?!?

The Stockholm and the Andrea Doria: Studies in human error in maritime disasters...

Back in '56, the Italian outbound liner 'Andrea Doria', and the inbound Swedish merchant vessel 'Stockholm', collided with each other off the east coast of the United States, with no apparent explanation as to their meeting on an ocean vastly larger than the area described in this article I post on.

Niether one was a 'warship', and they both carried either passengers of merchandise; therefore mindful of the safety of their respective cargoes.

The officers in charge, however, BOTH fucked up, and misunderstood common protocols; and drove their ships IN TO each other.

"Hold on: how can two massive ships, visible to the naked eye and certainly to radar from hundreds of miles away, "nearly collide"?"

The Reuters report amounted to nothing.

Ships take "evasive" actions at great distance. A ship on a steady course, seeing another ship engaging in varied maneuvers will change course to give a wide berth. The report gave no useful information to believe it is anything more than best practices by the Captain.

Large numbers of rural Mississippians who had never had Latino neighbors prior to Hurricane Katrina suddenly found themselves sharing their counties with new immigrants. For the most part, this has gone well perhaps surprisingly well, considering Mississippi's history.

Is Bitcoin the part of finacial warfare? Chinese are buying Bitcoin like crazy and EBA has released the Action Plan How To Kill Bitcoin now:

European Banking Authority Warns Consumers On Virtual Currencies

EBA joins with its warning China, South Korea, Norway, France and other financial authorities from different countries. This warning and presented footprint for actions by authorities in order to attack and seize the assets involved is the most explicit among the ones we have seen so far. Unless Bitcoin is not the Special Op created by the FED to celebrate its Anniversary and 100 Year War On Gold, U.S. will follow soon with its actions. You can guess yourself whether it will be difficult to find evidence that some transactions on the particular exchange were involved in criminal activity and can affect Everybody Involved. Major risks according to EBA: You may lose your money on the exchange platform
Your money may be stolen from your digital wallet
You are not protected when using virtual currencies as a means of payment
The value of your virtual currency can change quickly, and could even drop to zero
Transactions in virtual currency may be misused for criminal activities, including money laundering

And the punchline and footprint for further actions against Crypto-Currencies:

"Transactions in virtual currencies are public, but the owners and recipients of these transactions are not. Transactions are largely untraceable, and provide virtual currency consumers with a high degree of anonymity. It is therefore possible that the virtual currency network will be used for transactions associated with criminal activities, including money laundering. This misuse could affect you, as law enforcement agencies may decide to close exchange platforms and prevent you from accessing or using any funds that the platforms may be holding for you." http://sufiy.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/european-banking-authority-warns.htm...
