China Confirms Near-Collision Of US, Chinese Warships, Accuses US Of "Deliberate Provocation"

Tyler Durden's picture

Last Friday we reported of a freak near-incident in the South China Sea, when a US warship nearly collided with a Chinese navy vessel, operating in close proximity to China's only aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, although details were scarce. Today, with the usual several day delay, China reported what was already widely know, admitting that "an incident between a Chinese naval vessel and a U.S. warship in the South China Sea, after Washington said a U.S. guided missile cruiser had avoided a collision with a Chinese warship maneuvering nearby." According to experts this was the most significant U.S.-China maritime incident in the disputed South China Sea since 2009. Which naturally warranted the question: whose actions nearly provoked a potential military escalation between the world's two superpowers. Not surprisingly, China's version is that it was all the US' fault.

Reuters reports:

China's Defense Ministry said the Chinese naval vessel was conducting "normal patrols" when the two vessels "met".

"During the encounter, the Chinese naval vessel properly handled it in accordance with strict protocol," the ministry said on its website (www.mod.gov.cn).

"The two Defense departments were kept informed of the relevant situation through normal working channels and carried out effective communication."

But China's official news agency Xinhua, in an English language commentary, accused the U.S. ship of deliberately provocative behavior.

"On December 5, U.S. missile cruiser Cowpens, despite warnings from China's aircraft carrier task group, broke into the Chinese navy's drilling waters in the South China Sea, and almost collided with a Chinese warship nearby," it said.

"Even before the navy training, Chinese maritime authorities have posted a navigation notice on their website, and the U.S. warship, which should have had knowledge of what the Chinese were doing there, intentionally carried on with its surveillance of China's Liaoning aircraft carrier and triggered the confrontation."

On the other hand, and just as logically, the US said it was China's fault as the US ship had to take evasive action:

Washington said last week its ship was forced to take evasive action to avoid a collision.

Then again, one wonders just what a lone US warship was doing in such close proximity to China's aircraft carrier on its maiden voyage: "The Liaoning aircraft carrier, which has yet to be fully armed and is being used as a training vessel, was flanked by escort ships, including two destroyers and two frigates, during its first deployment into the South China Sea."

The United States had raised the incident at a "high level" with China, according to a State Department official quoted by the U.S. military's Stars and Stripes newspaper.

China deployed the Liaoning to the South China Sea just days after announcing its air Defense zone, which covers air space over a group of tiny uninhabited islands in the East China Sea that are administered by Japan but claimed by Beijing as well.

Leaving aside the question of what the US' response would be if a Chinese warship was circling just outside of the San Diego Naval Base, even if in "international waters", assuming China's account of the story is correct, and if indeed the US chain of command did tongue-in-cheekly suggest the creation of a modest incident (with or without escalation), then one should pay very careful attention to the development in the South China Sea, which the US apparently has picked as the next hotzone of geopolitical risk flaring.

If Global Srike Works, is actually something I know little about. I gather it is sapced based smart bombs or missiles, that could hit any target on earth. Not knowing much about it, I do think that Russia's new S-500 is being built as a counter, because S-400 has just been deployed with a huge increse in abilites from S-300, now I read in Russian press that S-500 is fast being gotten ready. I suspect it is Russia's defense system.

Russian responses to USA's Prompt Global Strike (PGS) strategy

Meanwhile, Russia Casually Announces It Will Use Nukes If Attacked | Zero Hedge

Russia to develop response to US Prompt Global Strike

Russia’s Fund of Perspective Researches (FPI) will develop a military response to the American Conventional Prompt Global Strike (PGS) strategy, Dmitry Rogozin told the State Duma.

So far, the FPI has already looked at over a thousand proposed ideas and plans to work on 60 projects, eight of which are top priority, the politician said. He refused to disclose any details, but said that one of those projects is focused on preparing a response to the PGS, which is the “main strategy” that the Pentagon is nurturing.

PGS would allow the United States to strike targets anywhere on the planet, with conventional weapons in as little as an hour.

As Rogozin explained earlier, the strategy would give America an advantage over a nuclear state, thanks to their better technical capabilities with weaponry, including the speed, RIA Novosti cited.

'No one will prevail over Russia militarily': Putin eyes $700bn to advance Army — RT News

Russia will not allow any nation to dominate it in military terms, the Russian president said. Some nations are developing new kinds of weapons, which may tip the global strategic balance, but Russia knows how to counter them.

“Let no one have illusions that he can achieve military superiority over Russia. We will never allow it,” Vladimir Putin said in a speech to the Federal Assembly, the joint session of the two chambers of the Russian parliament.

Of particular concern for Russia are the elements of the US-built national anti-ballistic missile system defense (AMD), which it plans to deploy in Europe.

...

Putin also added that Moscow monitors the development of new kinds of weapons by other nations, including small-yield tactical nuclear weapons, conventional precision strategic missiles and hypersonic precision weapons.

The latter may give technological means for a so-called “decapitating strike” a massive surprise attack on a nation’s key infrastructure, including strategic missile silos, communication hubs or government buildings, which in theory would do enough damage to avoid a massive retaliation nuclear strike.

“If all those plans are realized, it may cause a very negative effect on regional and global stability. Other nation’s build-up of conventional precision strategic systems combined with the increase of the AMD capabilities may nullify all previous agreements on the limitation and reduction of strategic nuclear weapons and tip the strategic balance of power,” Putin said.

Russian missiles are way better than US ones, across the board. Faster, more accurate, fire and forget, deadly. The US has some sort of anal complacency. Meanwhile Russia and China, the A team, have just got on with it and have very effective missiles. Plus they have Putin while the B team has that fuk tard Barry. I sense a classic reality check for US forces if and when they face off. Post probably Russia China calling in their loans lol. Cant say Ill be sad when the USA crashes. I just dont care anymore. It can go to hell, the rest of us will survive.

The USA has documented photos (altered) of the Captain of the Chinese warship.  He is allegedly Chinese and enjoys texting while driving.

seriously, who needs aircraft 'ac' (you don't see russia building anymore, nor china-- they're [ac] costly and out-of-date 20th century weapondry) carriers in the 21st century. they're floating coffins! all strategic and military wherewithal will take place via satellite's! it's all about hiding underwater (cloaking/ stealth technology) or... a few hundred miles up in space with an ant's`eye for mapping a perfect quadrant matrix around the unbounded (so far?) circumference of planet earth. adiz means nothing to china? but, it means alot to japan? china's adiz is miniscule in comparison to japan, south korea, (and taiwan?) !

what the u.ss.a would love to do is pull a bait-and-switch on the u.s.asian-pivot and turn it into a 'divide-and-conquer'-- a 180`degree japanese asean pivot 'dash'!?!

this is all kubuki theatre over two (2) islands that aren't worth all ( abe is an asshole that should have taken china's advise and left well enough alone) they're crack'd`?up to be as far as fishing rights and gas/ oil finds. it just ain't there, but it's a good way for obama to win another 'nobel`peace prize'? wouldn't it be amazing if he is the first ever u.s. president to win '2' nobel peace prices,... and a third term as potus like fdr polarizing socialist?!?

problem is... if russia pulls away from china if war starts? don't forget stalin in wwii when the ussr had a falling out with mao. it was actually the u.s. troops that rid the japanese from china and the humongous artillary troves they left that had fallen into mao's guerrilla [rebel/ communist] army that defeated the elite nationalist chinese now in taiwan [roc].

in other words,... china must wait patiently until it can act solely on it's own two feet. they're very pragmatic and methodical having been around for 5000 yrs..

jmo

btw,  china having a soft-landing days ago on the moon says they are pretty advanced, seeing that russia and the ussa haven't had any competition for 30 yrs..
