Guess The Smogged City

Tyler Durden's picture

Residents of this city woke on Wednesday to a third day of thick gray smog which has disrupted dozens of flights and train services and caused a rash of health complaints. As Reuters reports, the toxic levels of pollution, fuelled by industrial growth a surge in the numbers of vehicles crowding their roads, are more than 7x what the nation deems safe and what the US EPA calls "hazardous". But it's not in China...

In the 70's as a kid my lungs would hurt after a day running around in the sun in SoCal. Now in my 40's I can spend a day surfing and biking and still breathe deep without that problem.

When China and India have bigger guns than others their kids will have the same life. And so goes Empire.

Keep on borrowing and make sure the interest is impossible to pay as the world will never have enough naggin slaves rich and poor cause the 20% who do what everyone needs are full of enough guilt to build a ladder to the God of the times.

Perfect! I wandered along the streets of Lambeth, just across the Thames from central London. In the course of an hour's stroll, I say ONE white face. Some young guy kicking a soccer ball against a wall. The others were all Asian, like Indian, Pakistani, Afghan and many I did not know.

This is called diversity, and is said to be good for Britain and the natives. In fact, Government says, and tells the native whites, that there are too many whites in Britain, and that their culture must be diversified ever more and more. Yet, natives sit by and allow it to happen, without complaint. Their government is as ruthless as any communist government in forcing diversity onto the natives. Like it or not!

Stop sweating it, Jackie-boy.  We'll just blame "the Deities/gods blowing smoke".  They started this whole bull-crap in the first place.

And who exactly are these "Deities" (of varying rank and following)?  Well, a mix of well-meaning, interstellar Do-gooders and Assholes.  IOW, Starship Captains... like that Kirk fella.

Capt. Kirk's a fucking hypocrite:  He pretends to be goodie-two-shoes and all, but in reality he just wants to shag all the hot babes in the Galaxy.  And then BS each one that they are so 'special' and wants to have a demigod child only with them, and no one else.  Yeah, right!  The Olympians have been pulling that shit for centuries, cause it works like a charm:  What hot-looking peasant girl would not want to fast-track with... the Big Guy?

Except that this new Captain came along, 'Yahweh' (with his awesome space ship), who outgunned everyone else and decided that from now on only He was in charge of Earth and only He was allowed to get the babes.  Not only does the fool then decide to do it only once, but he doesn't even do it the "proper" way.  Instead, he does some genetic engineering and an IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) of this teenage babe named Miriam (aka Mary).  Where's the fun in that!?

"Prime Directive", my ass!  Even Starship Captains (aka 'God') and his Officers (gods) and Crew (angels) cherry-pick on when they interfere/meddle and when they lay back and watch the show.

Hedge, plan and worship/suck-up accordingly.

Believe me, JB, there IS complaint.... unfortunately, when you live in a country where you can get a 6+ month prison sentence and a big fucking fine for making said complaint in public (just words, no violence, you'll note)... it tends to get made in private. For now.

Now see, I don't have a problem with Britain's enforced multi-culturism, myself. Import the fuckers, I say. Some of them are skilled and will get on with working for a living, raising nice kids, integrating with the community, etc. Some won't. They'll sign on the dole and suck the economy even dryer than it currently is. Then when it collapses, the stupid white fucks on the same dole will fight them.

Happy days, as it means neither will be fighting me!

Please don't mistake this for the elite sociopathic disregard for human life. I'm a secular humanist anarchist, so ideally I'd like a peaceful and gentle transition to the next turning. But I'm also a realist and know we ain't going to get that.

Facts?  How about all the smoke from the millions of Delhi residents who are burning wood to keep warm, because they lack electricity?  It's smog.  Millions more burning dried cow chips.  Smoke plus fog.  Every December-January.

Oh, yesterday I drove from Chandigarh to Delhi (after doing the Rohtang Pass and Ladakh for a while).  Smoke and fog the whole way from Chandigarh.  I passed at least fifty accidents, as drivers didn't seem to think visibility of less than fifty meters was sufficient reason to do less than 100 kph.  At one point an old man in an oxcart, carrying a giant load of sugar cane, was coming AT traffic in the fast lane.  I doubt he saw sunrise today.  Then, of course, in the slow lane were folks coming against traffic in cars, trucks and tractors, because it was a shorter route than going on the correct side of the highway and using a legal U-turn.  As anyone who has ever driven in India can attest, the lines in the highway are merely suggestions, and since they point two ways (going and coming), two or three lanes can easily become seven lanes, with contraflow.

Then there were the pedestrians crossing the highway the whole time.  They couldn't see oncoming cars, so they assumed all was well.  It wasn't.  One poor fellow got hammered by a series of oncoming cars and was splattered all over the place.  Then everyone wanted to stop---in the smog---to go take a look at his body parts, so as they parked right in the middle of the road to get out and gawk, their cars got slammed by cars and trucks coming behind them.  I counted thirty cars, give or take a few, damaged in that one spot.

By the time I arrived in Delhi, I had to remove and launder all my clothes because of the smoke.

The newscasters were absolutely accurate.  It's smog.  It's being measured.  Haven't you noticed everyone in Delhi hacking and coughing and spitting on the sidewalks?

It is utterly baffling and you don't see it anywhere else I have been.  It isn't economically-related either.  It is just people doing random things that you would think your survival instinct would naturally kick in and tell you not to do.  Perfect example is running out in traffic even though you could wait another 30 seconds with no danger.  You have to go there and drive around enough especially outside the larger cities to experience it.  Mind-boggling.

Thats right about every city. I guess the reason is that indians are too attached to nature, dont follow rules made on the bedrock of western ways of living. You should visit the Indian coutryside. I assure you, you'll find yourself enchanted by the natural biodiversity there. Western technology, western culture is just totally anathema to the real indian way of life. Thus we are too hesitant to accept rupees for long term preservation, and therefore turn to gold to conserve our wealth

That has been my general experience in India while driving.  I was in a car at night driving in Uttar Pradesh, we hit something (it may have been a person or an animal), and the driver refused to stop.  I seen people get clipped/whalloped by trucks too and they don't miss a beat.  God forbid it is is a cow though in the road.

Thing that utterly baffles me about driving in India (and there is a lot) is the pedestrian who randomly run across the road right in front of traffic even during the day.  No rhyme or reason for it and it happens regardless of where you are at as long there are enough people around.  Cynical Indians I have been around just are either indifferent or say 'population control.'  Reminds me of the attitude certain Americans have towards various species of deer.

Love visiting Indian but you could never pay me to live there.

Driving the mountain roads in Himachal Pradesh is mind boggling.  The roads are maybe eight feet wide, there's mountain on one side (often an overhang because the road was cut out of the rock), a multi-thousand foot straight-as-a-beggar-can-spit (hat tip:  Peachy Carnahan) drop on the other side, no guard rail, and yet wood-bodied, 160 hp Tata 1613 truck drivers, rickety overloaded public buses, little Maruti-Suzuki Swifts, etc. try to pass around blind corners, go way too fast, refuse to consider centrifugal force or the friction of road ice, and do it all while talking or texting on their cellphones. It's no wonder many take the express route to their next Earthly iteration.  The only saving grace is that once one gets above the cow line one is less likely to be surprised by a sacred vision on a blind corner, which nearly all drivers would the expense of oncoming humans.  In Rajasthan, I once saw a truck driver do the pious thing and swerve to avoid a languidly moving cow in the middle of his lane, then direct his truck into an oncoming Piaggio Tuk Tuk loaded with pre-teen uniformed schoolgirls.  Med schools could teach Human Anatomy on the highways of the country, or else shop for transplants.

In case you missed it, last month had International Toilet Day (ITD).  On that day, the Indian Government announced that "53% of Indian households defecate in the open out of doors".  Last year on ITD the government ran a public service announcement in all the major newspapers asking citizens not to defecate on public sidewalks.  I kept the clipping from The Times of India (and considered sending it to akak, who seems to enjoy those sorts of things).

India is an interesting place with an interesting history, has a great literary tradition with some fine writers past and present, but I don't see much hope overall for the future.  The needs are simply too big.  Infrastructure, with the exception of telecom, is 18th Century.  Most every town looks post-Apocalyptic, with piles of garbage everywhere and half-destroyed buildings.  It's a natural Hollywood/Bollywood set for "The Road" remake.  I kind of understand why the politicians spend their entire time in office just filling their pockets.

Greatly depends where you are at in India.  In the less populated areas and towards parts of the Tibetan foot hills and parts of Punjab, it is quite beautiful.  Biggest issue is that as they have more modern packaging and the plastics that inevitably go along with it, they don't remotely have any kind of trash removal system in place to handle it.

Before, they literally had only organic refuse & waste for the most part which inevitably either broke down naturally and/or was consumed by something else.

Agreed though about India.  There are just too many damn people and Indians love to f@ck (pardon my language).  No way the India gov't could ever do what China implemented even though they have tried through various programs to bring down the birth rate.  It hasn't happened fast enough or gotten low enough.

I'm sorry, I don't care WHERE in the world you are, or how poor you are, but anyone who openly defecates in a public location is no better than an animal, and deserves to be treated as such.  I have been in very poor parts of the world where doing such a thing was as anathema as it would be to a North American or a European.  There is simply no excuse for such lazy, grossly unhygenic, and inherently and collectively self-destructive behavior as shitting in public.

As a microbiologist I must agree with you. I will say I have had some even more horrendous encounters besides defecation.

Mr Miffed and I were traveling with friends in Nice and had worked our way to Grasse. We girls pestered the guys to go to Fragonard for a tour before working are way down to Villefranche for lunch. When we got there,a tour bus pulled up to the entrance and about 20 Chinese men filed out and made their way to the entrance ahead of us. To my absolute horror, they all stopped in front of the door and started to spit on the ground! I mean hocking up masses of sputum! They were doing this all together like some perverse ritual. Then they walked into the building. We weaved our way around the spittle piles to get inside.

I was so sick to my stomach. The tour was ruined for me. I wouldn't touch anything and kept my distance from them. All I could think of was how to avoid tuberculosis. At Villefranche, mr miffed pulled me aside and told me to get a grip and not ruin lunch for everyone but I just couldnt eat or get over that disgusting image from my mind. I guess I should be thankful they didn't drop their pants and shit on the spittle piles. When new virulent viral diseases emerge from China on a regular basis I'm never surprised.

New Delhi happens to be one of the worst major cities in the world, according to WHO. See here:

On top, it is a capital city which does not even have much industries left and its river, Yamuna has been denuded after several centuries over the last 2 decades. Shanghai seems like a baby at 81 when Delhi is at 198 on the WHO scale!

Watch this FT video for a 'polluted' understanding of everything around Delhi from Himalayas downwards:

There is a whole website and thousands of people (including the Hare Krishna guys and several foreigners) dedicated to save the major rivers around Delhi and northern India.

The eyes start hurting with the particles, head starts to ache mildly, everyone coughs, doctors claim major lung and asthma infections, TB and even worms inside digestive tracts are on the rise, new borns get hooked to breathing steroids and puffers, old ones leave for neighbouring hills, hundreds of miles away ever so often to reduce exposure to the terrible delhi air and almost everyone has asthmatic symptoms, hair is always greasy and even 2 showers a day are insufficient to cleanse yourself and white shirts are simply a no no if you step out and if you see the tree leaves before any rain shower, you feel sorry for the trees!.

Metro has improved the situation a bit but with 5% pa growth in population and an average 50% in a decade, there is no known antidote to simple pollution with new cars being added by the thousands on the streets EVERY SINGLE DAY. Car parking road rage incidents regularly lead to murders in Delhi. Try parking in Delhi. Road rage also leads to foreigners from Congo getting murdered:

Things are so medically unfit that New Delhi got the badge of honour for being the first city in the world to have a bacteria named after it: You gotta read it, to believe it.

Some claim, Delhi will come to a standstill by 2020.

So, when you leave home at 8am, you can just reverse at 8pm and park right back, and shout: I am back, sweetheart! :) At least, you won't have to worry about parking problems!

I went to a talk on fluoridation yesterday. HHS is hiring Hager Sharp, a fucking PR firm off K street, to push fluoridation on communities because there are people out there that don't want it. The data supporting fluoridation is total and complete crap (that's bands of data points which they draw trend lines through with a slope that they want) and this is one of the top ten success stories of public health. It is expensive in terms of equipment and upkeep and the positives are nebulous and suspect. I'm growing more convinced that every great government story is a total bullshit lie and that includes the great, Nixon hellspawned EPA.

It should be illegal by their own rules. They are adulterating the water supply with an additive that is taken internally for a supposed health benefit.  Hence, the FDA should regulate fluoride as a drug.

But it can never be done because the dosage requirement would vary by weight, age, and amount of water consumed.

Of course, they do need a place to get rid of waste.  Otherwise it would be classified as hazardous waste.

"In the U.S., about 40,000 tons of fluorosilicic acid is recovered from phosphoric acid plants, and then used primarily in water fluoridation, sometimes after being processed into sodium silicofluoride."

It is a class 8 corrosive, Packing group II (which is the midrange)

Ummm, drink up.  Tough as hell to get out of your water. You need a bone char tank or an activated alumina tank, if you don't do RO.  Spring water that has none added for drinking for me.

There is little/no heavy manufacturing in or around Delhi.  As for it being cheap, there isn't necessary the case either especially due to the difficulty of supply and logistics given the horrendous Indian infrastructure, issues with consistent and reliable base power generation, and issues with local and regional gov'ts who always demand kickbacks.

Which is it? The MNCs that your country allows to dump burnt garbage on people or those "free market" reforms which for some reason don't include established property rights and a system of law to seek torts against those who harm others? Or perhaps it Is the old, unscrubbed diesel engines (burning subsidized fuel paid for by that same government) and the street meat vendors burning wood to cook that's causing the air pollution.

Should I go on? Or just observe the increasing number of emigrants to the US from India? I mean, why would they want to live in the US? There are MORE MNCs here and even more liberal free markets. I just can't understand why highly educated, hard working, cultured people would ever want to move to the US. It must be my closed mindedness.

If you want to see inhumanity against man, check out the streets of Gaza, flooded after a storm and after the denial of basic infrastructure from Israel. Turns out the disaster was not nature; it was man-made.

To see a neighborhood in Gaza over the weekend (MaanImages) go to link.

Storm Disaster in Gaza ‘Man-made’ | Ma’an News Agency 17/12/2013

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- As thousands in the Gaza Strip remain displaced and streets across the coastal enclave are still flooded Tuesday, it is increasingly clear that the devastation caused by storm Alexa was not a purely natural phenomenon.

Emergency response crews have been crippled by a lack of electricity to pump water and a lack of fuel to operate generators. But these conditions of scarcity are not a result of the storm. They were a fact of life even before the rain started falling, due to the Israeli-led siege and the severe limitations placed by Israel on imports and exports.

The severity of the storm’s effects and the seven years of siege the region has endured are connected by a near-total economic blockade that has led to a slow but steady collapse of infrastructure as well as a deeply weakened capacity for emergency response, a United Nations official charged Sunday.

"Long term de-development of Gaza is the context in which (the storm) occurred," Chris Gunness of the UN's Palestine refugee agency UNRWA said in an interview.

"It's fairly obvious that it's a combination of man-made problems and natural problems" that produced the latest disaster in Gaza, Gunness added.

He pointed out that despite the tremendous amount of work being done to relieve the crisis, it is an "overwhelmingly grave situation."

"Before the rains, there was sewage flooding in the streets because sewage pumps did not have electricity to pump waste water," Gunness said, referring to a number of incidents in recent weeks.

"You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out who's responsible for that."

Antiwar’s Justin Raimondo asked yesterday, “What is Gaza but history’s biggest concentration camp?”

He further asked, “What happens when a state singles itself out by engaging in behavior so egregiously oppressive, so repulsive to the civilized world, that dealing with it in any shape, form, or manner is morally problematic? Israel has reached that point – a tipping point, as Chemi Shalev puts it – as increasing numbers of people the world over reach that conclusion.”

Says Raimondo, a life student of war and oppression, “I changed my mind about the BDS (boycott, divest, and sanction) movement aimed at Israel when I read Max Blumenthal’s Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel, a book that tears the veil of hasbara off the Jewish state and reveals the crude racism that energizes its policies, both foreign and domestic. The idea that state funds are being used to build "Jews only" housing, roads, and entire communities – and that this is accepted as normal, even beneficial, by Israel’s ostensible "liberals" – is an international outrage. That it is being done with US taxpayer dollars and diplomatic support is unspeakable.”
