Not to ignore the absurdity of these items, but the price tags equate to probably a few minutes worth of the $85B each month (now $75B a month) being borrowed from future taxpayers to keep Jamie and Lloyd living the life to which they have become accustomed.
It's pretty much the kind of thinking that got us in this mess. Wasting money is inexcusable, especially if it is someone else's money.

I do not disagree with you about looking at the bigger picture. However, this "nickel and dime" spending has gotten out of hand, mostly because no one cares about it. The government should be better stewards of taxpayer money but why would they if no one demands it?

Its why we have never been overtly willing to accept a benevolent dictator, for we know how easily they can become manevolent. What would be your guess of how much they spend or on how many "projects" to advance conservative causes? The agencies that create these programs are largely unaccountable and completely dominated by liberal lifers. The agenda marches on, and the irony is that they are forcing conservatives to pay for the means to their own demise.

One of the major reasons they don't need to talk about the big picture is because so many people lap up fodder like this as a satisfying and more easily digested substitute. They then go to the polls and vote for or against the party who is supporting the green ninja. It's called defining (and narrowing) the debate. If you don't realize that this kind of BS is paraded out exactly for that reason, you're not paying attention.
I stopped watching TV news several years ago when Russert had several guests on his show debating whether Obama was being aggressive enough in Afghanistan. The entire debate centered around whether drone bombing on the one hand, or a more aggressive full blown bombing campaign on the other hand, would be more effective. The guests were hotly divided in this tiny box of debate and no doubt viewers went about their day arguing with family and friends over whether we were dropping enough bombs.
No -- that's not a major reason. You just made it up. The major reason is they own the distribution channels and can talk about whatever they like. If you could stamp this topic out of existence, there is a 0% chance you would find substantial debate in the media tomorrow.

It's interesting to know these things, but talking about it in circles goes nowhere, right? Yes, knowledge is power, but only if action is entertained.
Problem is solved by not participating. Stop going to work in a unified manner and it will end. Don't worry about the bills, mortgages and so on. Those that will take the lead in such an endeavor will have that covered, amongst many other potential situations that may come up. We outnumber them ... period.

I have to stand up beside you because I began the same project on the July 4, 1994.
And, I have to say that these have been the finest twenty years of my life.
Doing nothing by enough, is the one thing the system cannot tolerate and TPTB know this. They understand that as long as they keep the fear level high enough that the adrenaline rushes are drug enough to keep the wheel spinning.
Fear is king here----and one of the few criticisms that I have in regards to ZH---everything is sensationalized with fear----or so it seems much of the time.

From my point of view, us "normal folks" have 3 options:
1) live within the US system. Along with the endless corruption, crime, wars, inflation, and looting.
2) change the system. Political reform? Revolution? Non-participation? Nice ideas, but likely ineffective.
3) Exit the system. Find a safe place to live and LEAVE the US with all of your assets. At this point, the system can no longer "feed" off of you and your labor.
I saw #3 as our best option, and we did leave the system over a year ago. And yes, I do realize and acknowledge that this is not a realistic option for everyone.
