Canada Supports Life, Liberty And The Pursuit Of... Prostitution
34 years after Canada's Supreme Court upheld the country's anti-prositution laws, the highest court has struck down the nation's three prosititution-related laws in their entirety in a unanimous 9-0 ruling. Following the US' demand for minimum wage for strippers, AP reports Canada's ruling is a victory for sex workers seeking safer working conditions because it found the laws violated the charter guarantee to life, liberty, and security of the prison.

The high court on Friday struck down all three prostitution-related laws: against keeping a brothel, living on the avails of prostitution, and street soliciting.
The ruling is a victory for sex workers seeking safer working conditions because it found that the laws violated the charter guarantee to life, liberty and security of the person.
But the Supreme Court of Canada decision also gives Parliament a one-year reprieve to respond with new legislation.
Ontario's Appeal Court previously struck down the ban on brothels on the grounds it exposed women to more danger.
Friday's landmark ruling comes 34 years after the Supreme Court last upheld the country's anti-prostitution laws.

Kreditanstalt I think you hit the nail on the head. The AP article also mentions switching to a "Nordic" system in which prostitution itself is made illegal. I like your attitude that things will only get worse, not any better because of this new ruling.
Freedom is getting legal in fits and spats in the western world.
Prostitution Decriminalization should be on the ballots in the States if only in the beginning to draw out the money to oppose those initiatives. Would be really interesting/entertaining to see who/what would fund the TV ads trying to decry the "oldest profession"..
Laws affecting Prostitution should be severely limited, but strong where it counts, especially in the trafficking side where death upon being found guilty would be fine with me if children are the commodity. No: an adult should be free to exchange their time engaged in sex, companionship, etc.. for money.
Sex work, done properly, is a high calling. Way up there in the Service to Others sector like a good bartender, waiter/waitress, doctor, therapist, teacher, etc.
And for those who can't see past your moral issues with people actually enjoying sex: you've been programmed to reject the idea that hot, consenting, and free sex is a healthy and very important aspect of our existence in these bodies. And you, fortunately, do not have a voice in the debate. Same as gay marriage or any other activity in conflict with the law which is opposed with generic and single digit IQ statements like "Marriage is only between a man and a woman". The world is upside down. While in Europe prostitution gets banned, it gets allowed in Canada. While everywhere in Europe (including the former weed paradise the Netherlands) they are cracking down on weed, it gets legal in more US states.
You're mistaken. It's been legal in Holland for decades, and Amsterdam has a district that's famous for it. Ditto for Germany, Czech Republic, etc.
