Map Of The Day: Tokyo vs London - Size Matters

Tyler Durden's picture

The following graphic from @Amazing_Maps struck us in its stunning comparison between Greater London and the Greater Tokyo Area superimposed over England.

With a population of around 36 million, making it by far the world's most populous metropolitan area, it covers an area of approximately 13,500 km² (5,200 mi²), giving it a population density of 2,642 person/km² - which is more than twice the population density of Bangladesh.

The area has the largest metropolitan economy in the world, with a total GDP (nominal) of approximately US$1.9 trillion (¥165 trillion) in 2008.

Urban sprawl, meet Asian sprawl.

That's gonna be one damned difficult place to evacuate everyone from when the winds start blowing just the right way over Fukushima.

I'm talking about London, of course.  Tokyo's already toast.

Its a terrifying thought.  When TSHTF I'd rather starve to death in a forest or in a field fighting for survival rather than be in the concrete jungle.

I don't know...

Starving to death is a long process... getting shot in the head, it's like you're there one second, and gone the next.

But neither is likely in your analogy. If you're in a field orforest you can eat grass or bark, or bugs or whatever you can find. You won't starve.

And my analogy doesn't work for Tokyo. It's a gun-free country.

Actually, the opposite is more likely. Someone will probably shoot you for stealing their bark. The woods will be full of armed Americans.

And even the biggest FEMA-like operation won't be able to get enough food & water into Tokyo. Food riots, being trampled, starvation, will kill a lot of people.

In china there is the supposed 'one child' per couple rule to control population while in Japan they practice the 'one copulation' rule where all interest in sex 'melts down' after only one solitary sexual encounter.

I'm beginning to believe that the Japanese women evolved from the Cicada where, after only one solitary sexual act, all sexual interest disappears for 17 years.

Come to think about it that describes my wife........

True story. When the Japanese built Tokyo Tower (yep, the one they have had to rebuild several times because Godzilla keeps tearing it down) and painted it orange and white (don't they know by now that sea creatures hate that color combination?!), they had a naming contest. After receiving over 82,000 entries, they went with the most original "Tokyo Tower" because it's a tower in Tokyo.

In the category "mine is bigger than yours" Tokyo is the clear winner. But the map above is incorrect. It represents the Kanto area and about half of it is as empty as the English countryside. It is about the same as a "South England Greater London Area" with 20 million people. The only difference is that there are urban corridors linking the cities in Japan which do not exist in the UK but outside these corridors, it's countryside. Rice fields and bamboo groves.

You can see why I prefer French "ribs" over Texan "ribs".  Or why studying Anatomy at the Sorbonne is best.  Or, as a former French President once said:  "I love every French woman between 18 and 65".

Another example of how geography is not taught correctly in our schools. Someone has clearly mistaken the Kanto region for Tokyo metro. This is the equivalent of someone here mistaking Washington State for Washington D.C. The Tokyo metro area is generally understood to be the combined cities of Yokohama, Tokyo, Kawasaki, and Chiba. The outline above is the combination of the entire prefectures of Tokyo, Chiba, Ibaraki, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Gunma, a lot of which is sparsly populated. It would be like someone saying that the US eastern metro corridor consists of the entire states of Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.

Just to put things in perspective.

The "Greater London" are on that map is not really Greater London but covering also outer London which basically the land inside the M25.

The M25 is a UK motorway (freeway to you in the USA) that goes around Outer London.

The population inside the M25 is 20 million people.
