Edward Snowden's Christmas message, conveyed to the world courtesy of the UK's Channel 4, from his Russian exile is simple: "end mass surveillance." Alas, in a world in which social media exhibitionism is the norm, is his message increasingly falling on deaf ears? After all, there is a Duck Dynasty scandal, or a Justin Bieber retirement at any given moment, both of which are far more important than the loss of all personal privacy and the supreme reign of Big Brother.

Here's a truly "Alternative" Christmas story in 6 parts. I find the introduction particularly poignant in the warning that the following (abridged) message is not for the faint of heart. I find it amusing too how we sheeple can endure countless hours of gratuitous media / entertainment violence, yet find nothing but ridicule for an 18th century historian scholar who has been singularly attributed with providing the first great awakening leading to the establishing of the nation and constitution we all have been taught to pledge allegiance to, in no small part triggered by this graphic verbal portrayal that puts any killing and maiming Tarentino sequence to shame.

If we love God and our brothers and sisters, we walk in the light; but if our heart is closed, if we are dominated by pride, deceit, self-seeking, then darkness falls within us and around us. “Whoever hates his brother – writes the Apostle John – is in the darkness; he walks in the darkness, and does not know the way to go, because the darkness has blinded his eyes” (1 Jn 2:11).
On this night, like a burst of brilliant light, there rings out the proclamation of the Apostle: “God’s grace has been revealed, and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race” (Tit 2:11).
The grace which was revealed in our world is Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary, true man and true God. He has entered our history; he has shared our journey. He came to free us from darkness and to grant us light. In him was revealed the grace, the mercy, and the tender love of the Father: Jesus is Love incarnate. He is not simply a teacher of wisdom, he is not an ideal for which we strive while knowing that we are hopelessly distant from it. He is the meaning of life and history, who has pitched his tent in our midst.
The shepherds were the first to see this “tent”, to receive the news of Jesus’s birth. They were the first because they were among the last, the outcast. And they were the first because they were awake, keeping watch in the night, guarding their flocks.

Ever since it was disclosed that Google spied, mined and saved all search data to identify as much data as possible about internet users, I had blocked google analytics and made sure I never ever saw an ad or that some entity stored cookies, beacons and other trackers on MY COMPUTER. If there was a critical mass of people like me there would not be Google, Facebook and Twitter: their economic model would not work and there wouldn't be NSA to ride google coattails.
I am certain that much of the data stored by NSA is also made available to certain US corporations to profit from or in exchange for government contractor dollars.
To think that almost none will dump their smartphones for an old-fashioned cell-phone that won't track them, tells you all you need to know about the American middle class even when it's disclosed that American phone companies are giving all their info about their customers to NSA without any legal constraint, consideration or afterthought is mind bungling.

Funny thing is I haven´t seen one ad from a major cell phone company or providor which will sell a phone that a person can turn off gps and any tracking or snooping software or devices and still use it- I would buy one in a heart beat and so would many others.

Recently we learned that our governments, working in concert, have created a system of worldwide system of mass surveillance watching everything we do. Great Britain’s George Orwell warned us of the danger of this kind of information.
The types of collection in the book -– microphones and video cameras, TVs that watch us –- are nothing compared to what we have available today. We have sensors in our pockets that track us everywhere we go. Think about what this means for the privacy of the average person.
A child born today will grow up with no conception of privacy at all. They’ll never know what it means to have a private moment to themselves an unrecorded, unanalyzed thought. And that’s a problem because privacy matters; privacy is what allows us to determine who we are and who we want to be.
The conversation occurring today will determine the amount of trust we can place both in the technology that surrounds us and the government that regulates it. Together we can find a better balance, end mass surveillance, and remind the government that if it really wants to know how we feel, asking is always cheaper than spying.
