China has managed to turn many of those paper $US into very real tangible assets - Australian mining companies, farmland in Africa, long term energy contracts with the 'Stans- no to mention thousands of tonnes of gold and silver - all courtesy of an otherwise surplus rural population put to work in factories provided by WESTERN corporations. And yes, some of that has been converted to 'coal' - much of that mined right her in the US.
Even at 'cheapest pay rates on the planet' (no longer true) these children of peasants generated a huge trade surpluc for China and allowed their parent company to buy up hard assets it could never afford otherwise. China has also spent a good deal buying friends and influencing governments all over the world - whie the US blew trillions and STILL couldn't manage to loot Iraq and Afghanistan at the point of a gun.
