Senator Bernie Sanders Asks NSA If It Spies On Congress

Tyler Durden's picture

The real life magic-mushroom, banana dictatorship envisioned by George Orwell just went full retard.

From VT Senator Bernie Sanders:

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today asked the National Security Agency director whether the agency has monitored the phone calls, emails and Internet traffic of members of Congress and other elected officials.

Has the NSA spied, or is the NSA currently spying, on members of Congress or other American elected officials?” Sanders asked in a letter to Gen. Keith Alexander, the NSA director. “Spying” would include gathering metadata on calls made from official or personal phones, content from websites visited or emails sent, or collecting any other data from a third party not made available to the general public in the regular course of business?”

Sanders said he was “deeply concerned” by revelations that American intelligence agencies harvested records of phone calls, emails and web activity by millions of innocent Americans without any reason to even suspect involvement in illegal activities. He also cited reports that the United States eavesdropped on the leaders of Germany, Mexico, Brazil and other allies.

Sanders emphasized that the United States “must be vigilant and aggressive in protecting the American people from the very real danger of terrorist attacks,” but he cited U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon’s recent ruling that indiscriminate dragnets by the NSA were probably unconstitutional and “almost Orwellian.”

Sanders has introduced legislation to put strict limits on sweeping powers used by the National Security Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation to secretly track telephone calls by millions of innocent Americans who are not suspected of any wrongdoing.

The measure would put limits on records that may be searched. Authorities would be required to establish a reasonable suspicion, based on specific information, in order to secure court approval to monitor business records related to a specific terrorism suspect. Sanders’ bill also would put an end to open-ended court orders that have resulted in wholesale data mining by the NSA and FBI. Instead, the government would be required to provide reasonable suspicion to justify searches for each record or document that it wants to examine.

Uhm... yes?

Five gallons of Gas and a Bic? That will do a little damage. The problem is that one will probably end up burning one's self up beforehand. Death by burning alive is not the most pleasant endings.

How about a Baby Food jar filled with Muriatic Acid (Swimming Pool Acid), Crumbled Aluminum Foil, and a Can of Automotive Statrting Fluid all confined within a Pipe and that has a Nail in a sleeve that breaks the Jar upon Impact?

Of course that Pipe can be within another pipe that is filled with Nitrated Cotton and shrapnel...One can use Black Powder, I guess...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwb2HQOIOUI

And then this can be attached to the front end of a Rocket for a "Special Delivery"...Long Range Delivery???

In that way one is nowhere near the end result.

"...No talent ass cowards..."???

Oh the talent is here. There are many others whom know how to do this. A target for the most massive impact might be Oil Refineries and Pipelines..

But who delivers the first blow remains to be seen...

So are you suicidal?

Or are you just attempting to incite others as you are too much of a coward to act?

Many, as MYSELF, will just OPT OUT of the CURRENT PARADIGM, and NOT resort to violence.

What you may NOT UNDERSTAND is that the Wise will rush clear of impending Destruction and Doom while the Fool rushes in to be slaughtered.

That is NOT Cowardice but it is an act of both Wisdom and MORALITY.

Of course the Wise Men don't know how it feels...to be Thick as a Brick...as far too many are.

There are many scientists whom frequent this Forum. They are just as capable as they understand the Physics, the Chemistry, and the MATH necessary to design all sorts of Nasties. They just choose NOT TO ACT as the Foolish deserve their lot.

So stop your TROLLING for the NSA.

Let me finish this by writing, "Taking out the Pipelines in Cushing, OK..." Got your ears on NSA?

BTW, wrong question asked....should have been: "Has the NSA OR ANY OF ITS PARTNERS IN THE 1948 INTELLIGENCE SHARING TREATY ever spied or curently spy on CONNEDgress?....."

Does anybody think the NSA is a credible threat? You'd have to think that the information captured could be used by third parties or government officials who are violating their constitutional oaths. Perhaps they are making investment decisions, personal ones? Would it be right to grant access to foreign countries or dual citizens regardless of their current relation with the interests of the USA? Would those involved in the system know how to hide their own actions for their own gains? Is there a class of officials who have lost their way? Are they insane? How could justice prevail when investigations into violations could be detected in advance and prevented or punished? Is the system of justice too "analog" with no concurrent growth to counter violations of national sovereign integrity? To be true you'd have to see evidence of national breakdown like, say, exporting your industrial power to a foreign country and destroying your middle class.

Good one.

Since it was disclosed, and then quickly swept under the rug by the MSM, that Israel gets live feeds of everything the NSA gets on Americans, it surely would include the most existentially important Americans to Israel -- the congress critters.

Before 911, Israel did domestic metadata gathering through two companies -- Amdocs and another. At least one of them also had an office in the WTC. Israeli newspaper Ha'rretz reported at the time that a phone call was made for them to get out 1 hour before the first plane hit.

Back in the day the NSA could say the US government was not engaging in domestic spying on Americans -- because another government was doing it on their behalf.

But there's only 2 answers

2. No, of which they will be set up for a snooker if it's proved they lied again.

Bernie isn't stupid in that he doesn't know they are spying on Congress; he's stupid in thinking that shaming them with this letter will do anything. Sometimes it's clear why the representatives of the people let the government become occupied - they approach things from a perspective of compromise with antagonists to the Constitution. Now the rulers are pumping payoff money to those who control the levers at the top in order to grease things past the point of no return. A congressman here and there "phone it in" especially among the Dems who need to keep up appearances for liberals who care(d) about civil rights.

I can't stand the socialist Sanders (curse his name), and of course he has his head up his backside.  But this is "how you do it".  You ask people questions, which puts them on the record either with an answer or with refusing to answer.  The problem we have is that those who chould pull out the record from time to time are not doing so when Democrats (curse their name) are involved.

Having Sanders do this rather than a Republican (curse their name as well) might help put the screws to Clapper, Alexander, &c.

It might not.  But I appreciate the effort.  It beats anythin else going on, and either way will help provide facts to build upon.

Why "reasonable suspicion"?. You have just conceeded "probable cause". Probable cause is a much higher standard and is what the constitution requires.

Shooting for reasonable suspicion is a miistake. All that means is the NSA looks through thier files and finds something suspicious i.e. pay cash for your dinner etc.

This is better than nothing but don't get too excited

A recent study has shown that 90 percent of all cyber attacks against the US government are by the US government. The cyber warfare capabilities of the US have grown so fast and so complex the NSA was not able to keep track of all of its programs, people, missions and capabilities. In trying to detect intruders the employees, sometimes in the next cubicle, were unknowingly detecting their coworkers and mistaking them for intruders and launching cyber attacks, which then prompted counter attacks.

Wow, a lot of people hating on Sanders... for being a socialist? Einstein was a socialist. Oppenheimer and Chaplin, too. Meanwhile, good ol' capitalists like Bernanke are screwing you in the butt, but somehow their Ayn Rand ideology seems to have more legitimacy?

So effens stupid.   Criminals like Bernanke are simply corrupt, not an example of capitlism.

How stupid can you be?

The NSA's entire rationale for spying on Americans is that the agency is trying to keep us safe. We've been told the same thing by virtually every government agency that abuses us.

I routinely meet idiots who believe that the government wants to protect Americans from terrorists. It's a rather primitive belief. If you question it, people will get angry. It upends their version of reality.

The truth is that the government didn't protect the American people on 9/11. In fact, NORAD failed to dispatch fighter jets in a timely manner and from the correct airforce bases. Miraculously, just on that one  day, the people at NORAD forgot to follow
well-established procedures for what to do when a plane goes off course and fails to hit its mile markers.

Similarly, on 11/22/63, the U.S. Secret Service forgot to follow well-established procedures for presidential security. So, JFK was murdered in broad daylight. In presidential motorcades on days preceding 11/22/63, the Secret Service managed to seal manhole covers, keep nearby windows closed, and station agents on the running board of Kennedy's limosine. But, on 11/22/63, agents were pulled off Kennedy's limosine at Love Field and Kennedy was driven through Dealey Plaza without normal protection.

How about cutting their legislative appropriations. You know you are in an alternate universe when Bernie Sanders sounds cautious and reasonable.
