Four Photos From A Frozen America

And now, some stories, via Bloomberg:

Yesterday’s low in Chicago reached a record for the date of minus 16 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 27 Celsius), beating the mark of minus 14 set in 1884 and 1988, according to the National Weather Service. Today, New York’s high will struggle to reach 10 degrees, a day after Central Park reached 50. As of 7 a.m., it was 5 degrees in New York and 13 in Boston.

“It is a pretty ferocious air mass coming down,” said Tom Kines, a meteorologist with AccuWeather Inc. in State College, Pennsylvania. “Across the upper Midwest it stayed below zero and will stay below zero and that air is coming eastward.”

The frigid weather strangled transportation routes around the country including interstate highways, airlines and rails. It also led to a surge in energy demand that pushed power in Texas to more than $5,000 a megawatt-hour for the first time and caused disruptions at oil refineries in Tennessee and Illinois.

The natural gas-weighted heating degree days value is expected to be 46.5 today, according to Commodity Weather Group LLC in Bethesda, Maryland, beating the century’s previous high of 45.1 set on Jan. 16, 2009. Natural gas-weighted heating degrees subtract the daily average temperatures in cities nationwide from 65, then weight the totals based on population and use of the fuel for heating.

* * *

The cold air blowing across the Great Lakes may bring 24 inches of snow to parts of western New York by tonight, according to the weather service. The region is expected to be whipped by wind chills of minus 30.

“The lake snow belts are going to get walloped,” said James Aman, a senior meteorologist with Earth Networks, Inc. in Germantown, Maryland.

* * *

Valero Corp.’s Memphis refinery in Tennessee had a system shutdown because of low temperatures in the area, according to a filing with the U.S. National Response Center. Exxon Mobil Corp. had some “problems” with unidentified process units at its Joliet, Illinois, refinery because of extreme cold weather, according to a separate filing. U.S. companies must notify the center if they release hazardous substances. Bloomberg couldn’t immediately verify the information.

Record lows for the date were set or tied across the northern tier of the country. The low of minus 13 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, beat the old mark of minus 12 set in 1970, according to the weather service. In Burlington, Iowa, the mercury fell to minus 14, which was also recorded in 1970.

The lowest temperature of the day was minus 40 in Brimson, Minnesota, according to the U.S. Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

Among today’s forecast highs are 5 in Chicago, 17 in Washington and 26 in Atlanta.

* * *

While the heart of the cold is shifting east, it will still maintain its grip on the central U.S., Aman said. He said the weather will start to warm in a couple of days.

“By Wednesday morning a lot of your big cities will be in single digits and during the day Wednesday we start to come out of it,” Aman said. “Things will be much more tolerable by Wednesday afternoon and we see some continued warming by Thursday.”

Temperatures in New York are expected to bounce back to 39 by the end of the week, according to the weather service. On Jan. 13 it may reach 53, according to MDA Weather Services in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Chicago’s high may reach 39 by Jan. 12 and Washington 57 by Jan. 13, according to MDA.

I lived in St Joe back over twenty years ago. Winter brought much more than ice on the pier it included the dreaded lake effect snow.  NW bitter cold wind over much warmer Lake Michigan waters.  I once measured a foot of snow in just under three hours.  That one was unusual in that it wasn't accompanied by high winds.   For hours it looked like someone had cut open a huge feather pillow in the sky.  The lake does moderate West Michigan temperatures versus the WI and IL side of the lake hence all of the orchards which can't handle prolonged below zero freezes without damage.  Pretty state to live in if you can find work.  Native Michigander transplanted through job moves.  Miss the place.

It, too, is shitty, poorly played blues elevated to a sham genius through the bewildering elixir of an idealizing nostalgia.

Then publish a story about how the statistic are linked to the weather.  Does ZH really need pictures of eskimos women and ice scupltures?  Why not a picture of some love birds ice skating?  Your an apologist for a soft Tyler.  Never thought Tyler Durden would get fat and lazy.

Tyler: Please update your manifesto to soft and cuddle articles about nothing.

I'd love some cooking articles.  I had some sort of pork dish over some sort of noodles at an Italian place 2 nights ago and would love a practical, no nonsense guide to cooking similarpork-based meals in the comfort and convenience of my own home.

Who wants to go out in this weather, it's frightful!  Am I right?

Plus, sluts yield the vag extra quick when you think you spent a lot of time cooking for them.  I think I learned that from the guy who wrote I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell.  Do you know that dude only has one testicle?  I think he lost it over Iran or some shit.

It's not Global Warming any more, it's Climate Change.  Get with the program, dude, and stop using this politically incorrect nomenclature.  20,000 years ago Canada was covered with an ice sheet well over a mile thick, reaching two miles in places.  Coastal sea levels fell a hundred yards below the current level.  The UK was not an island at the time.   Now that was some serious climate change.  Our scientific elites are trying to pin that on misdirected Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon technology.

Photo evidence of the retreat of glaciers in Glacier National Park does suggest that global warming has been happening since 1911.  It could be from anthropogenic causes.

All of the CO2 in the atmosphere was replaced during the Industrial Revolution when coal was burned and the emissions just kept on belching into the air.

Huge amounts of CO2 released into the atmosphere at a specific locality can be deadly, the prime example is Lake Nyos in Africa.

During the Carboniferous Period, the levels of CO2 were 10 to 20 times present day levels of ~345ppm.  For every million cubic meters of air mass, there is 345 cubic meters of CO2.  The rest is fixed in plants, trees, kelp, grass, aka carbon sinks.

when Pinatubo erupted (Phillipines) there was a cool dark summer to follow on the west coast, as the particulate matter put a scrim on the atmosphere. as the planet ages, there is less volcanic activity though lately a couple of volcanos, including the one in Iceland have made the news. the short term swings could be explained that way, but if the previous ice age was acerbated by volcanic activity, the kind of which we no longer have, then we have to assume something is really wrong, on a planet where the crust and formation are now more mature and weather patterns should be more stable

seems likely the polar vortex is some sort of weather pattern slippage. also likely that an ice age and a warming pattern of duration begin the same way (symptomatically). and the widening of the polar vortex isn't a sign that the world is getting cooler, but the opposite, like somebody just threw open the door to the refrigerater which doesn't mean the frozen vegetables are going to stay frozen. the (crazy liberal?) scientists postulate that a warming trend would unfreeze a lot of tundra releasing huge amounts of methane gas. (maybe we can pipe some of it down south for our a/c units) the crazy republican scientists postulate that a permanent opening of the Northwest Passage would provide an over the top route to North America for the TERRORISTS. (which is good for business, which causes more pollution. you can't win)

Don’t believe the Climate Alarmists.  Cycles of Warm and Cold have been going on for millions of years.  The last 100 years it has been warmer.  The next it may be colder.  It’s all relative, and switching from a 40W incandescent to a 5W LED isn't going to change a damn thing.

This isn't just any cold weather; this is caused by a polar vortex! Haven't you heard?!?!? Man-made global warming caused this polar vortex and now we are all going to fuckinig die!!! The only thing that can save us are carbon taxes and progressive politics!

Of course this is all sarcastic, but alas, there are many who would agree with that line of bullshit. If someone ever walked up to me on the street and said polar vortexes are caused by man-made global warming, I think I would shove a snowball up their ass.

Global warming is causing the Arctic ring fence to fall apart. This cold air doesn't belong down here, where humans mostly are. We don't usually see this. We are seeing it more and more now, the latest is simply the worst.

All kinds of shit is coming unwired now.

If it all seems to cancel out -- the record highs and then the record lows -- then just remind yourself that anyone's personal experience is worthless in the grand scheme. The atmospheric physics of the planet is coming unglued. Our entire species evolved from simple animals over 5 million years of relative climate stability, but changes are coming now that this world hasn't witnessed in 300 million years, which is the last time so much carbon was on the surface rather than in the ground.

Nothing can be done. Scream and cry, deny it, rage against the gods. Or change your life style, if you want, use less fossil fuels and walk more and consume less, all that. But nonw of it will matter. We have broken the world but it will take it 200 years to fully fall apart from where we are now, ever year will bring another set of records of every kind, and humans will either become another kind of creature than we set out to become 5 million years ago, or else we will vanish forever.
