Japanese Consumer Squeezed As Phone Prices Rise At Fastest Pace In 21 Years

Tyler Durden's picture

While Abe begs (and cajoles) business leaders to raise wages (whether it makes economic sense or not), his plunging approval rating could have something to do with the ongoing squeeze the average gadget-freak Joe-san consumer is experiencing. Bloomberg reports, for the first time in 21 years, mobile phone prices are rising. The typical deflationary path of technological improvement is being overwhelmed by JPY weakness. "Inflation is spilling across a range of products," warns a Dai-Ichi economist, adding that the weakening yen is driving up prices as "Japan is importing more final goods as production shifts overseas."

And he can not hide from this one as cell phones have been deemed a necessary component of live on this planet and thus part of the CPI measurement...unlike other less necessary things like food.

They may have to give up $25/ea. apples, $250/kg Bluefin, and $200/lb Kobe beef. We tried to sell them Hood River apples but they won't allow them in the country.

rgardless, they prefer the crisper glowing domestic apples vs. Yakima or over micro brewed HR apples...maybe they'd buy a pear from HR but only if you can show some downwinder radiation influence from Hanford?

Here comes the inflation from the massive Japanese printing.

After Japan,  the US is following.

Japan is the US fed's grand Keynesian experiment.

How about crazy amounts of inflation coming to Japan?

that is a reserve currency. or WAS a reserve currency. the question is "what type of bail in." it won't be Cyprus that's fer sure.

Not to pick nits, but a currency widely held in reserve is not the same as the reserve currency.  At least before the CBs decided that 2008 was simply mass delusion.

i dont understand how inflation is a good thing.  Isnt inflation+supressed wages = stagflation?  Then why isnt anyone using that term any more?

never caught on...sorta like the spork or esperanto.  Even probably more like the term "3rd party"...it's only Red team or Blue team...as if there is nothing in between...or above, or behind, or or or...

But, yeah, pretty much total stagflationary action...worst of all worlds for those unlucky enough to be retired on a budget or working for a living or trying to raise a family -

But on the bright side, it does sort of evoke images of a great and powerful deer w/ a giant rack leading our economy!?!?

Because nobody wants the answer the question of how prices inflate if costs (wages) deflate as that would expose the anti-labor rhetoric as the vile pack of lies that it's always been.

At what point does the Yen crash. I'm paying attention to the Yen swaps curve very carefully and I advise others to do the same. Once that curve really starts to move up, the Yen will crash.

Big yen moving into US real estate again. They bought Rockefeller Ctr at the peak in 1989, and sold at the low in 1995 followed up by the Asian Contagion. Maybe it will be different this time.

We would do a bail-in, except most Americans are dirt poor, living paycheck to paycheck with literally no savings in the bank. Money printing it is!

Well, you can now download a geiger counter app to use on your Iphone.  It measures gamma only, and isn't actually useful for food, which is what most people would want.  But maybe the Japanese are paying more for the little add-on geiger devices that you can attach to an Iphone.

In the meantime, we've been reassured that the 5X normal radiation levels of the water at Half Moon Bay here in Northern CA, are in no way due to Fukushima.  They are, according to county officials, I kid you not, perhaps due to "red painted disposable eating utensils."

Please, please, William Banzai, read the article and do a "red painted disposable eating utensil" artwork.
