Japan Calls China "Voldemort", China Responds With "Darkest Devil"

Tyler Durden's picture

The war of words (and deeds) is once again escalating between China and Japan. As we detailed last night, this has been a long time coming and as Reuters reports today took a further turn for the worse. In an op-ed in Britain's Daily Telegraph, the Chinese ambassador to Britain, Liu Xiaoming, wrote last week: "If militarism is like the haunting Voldemort of Japan, the Yasukuni shrine in Tokyo is a kind of horcrux, representing the darkest parts of that nation's soul." Liu's commentary was followed by another published on Sunday by his Japanese counterpart, Keiichi Hayashi, in the same newspaper, headlined: "China risks becoming Asia's Voldemort". As was noted, "Five thousand years of traditional virtues have been turned into this?"

Via Reuters,

China lambasted Japan on Tuesday for comparing it to Lord Voldemort, the villain in the Harry Potter stories, after both countries used the character to describe each other in a tit-for-tat diplomatic spat.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's December 26 visit to Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine, where Japanese leaders convicted as war criminals are enshrined along with other war dead, infuriated China and South Korea and prompted concern from the United States, a key ally.

Both China and Korea suffered under brutal Japanese rule, with parts of China occupied in the 1930s and Korea colonized from 1910 to 1945.

In an op-ed in Britain's Daily Telegraph, the Chinese ambassador to Britain, Liu Xiaoming, wrote last week: "If militarism is like the haunting Voldemort of Japan, the Yasukuni shrine in Tokyo is a kind of horcrux, representing the darkest parts of that nation's soul."

...

Liu's commentary was followed by another published on Sunday by his Japanese counterpart, Keiichi Hayashi, in the same newspaper, headlined: "China risks becoming Asia's Voldemort".

...

"I would like to point out that, to Asia and countries in other regions of the world, militaristic invasion is the darkest devil in the history of Japan," Hua said at a daily news briefing, according to a transcript posted on the foreign ministry's website.

the People's Daily, said the "Sino-Japanese war of public opinion is facing an escalation on all fronts".

"We need to make our demands simple and clear, that is, the Japanese prime minister cannot visit the war criminals in Yasukuni because it is equivalent to paying homage to criminals like Hitler and Goebbels," the newspaper said, referring to the leaders of Nazi Germany.

...

"Five thousand years of traditional virtues have been turned into this?" wrote another microblogger.

If you want racism, real hatred, blood feuds and environmental devastation - it is hard to beat the Asians.  The Chinese and Japanese really lead the world in this area.  What the Japanese Army did in Asia in their quest for gold and riches pre-WW2 was horriffic.

I'm OK with it, as long as they also put up a statue of the Invisible Pink Unicorn, and another one depicting Our Lady of Medjugorje (I'm Catholic).

Fair and balanced!

P.S.

Tell it to the Tibetans.

Who is threatening war with Taiwan and Phillipines? Who also invaded Vietnam? China is so hypocritical. Always blabbering about other countries meddling in its internal affairs then it turns around and tells the Japanese PM where he can and cannot go in his own country.

Who cares if there are some war criminals among the others in the shrine? They are dead. Japan lost the war. They are not claiming the entire China sea as their exclusive territory, China is.

China needs to stop hassling everybody now that it has a bunch of dollars to buy battleships and feed its people, clean up its pollution, stop slaughtering endangered animals all over the world so it can make erectile dysfunction treatments for its men, and live without bullying its neighbors. Japan has been through enough: it got nuclear bombs dropped on it, its been occupied by the US, its suffered earthquakes and tsunamis, its got to deal with a 20 year long recession, Fukishima, and radioactive squid.

Come on China, give the world and Japan a break. Grow some compasion for others, won't ya?

A pox on both their houses. Japan still whitewashes its dirty deeds in China and Korea.

And tell me again... what country transferred its manufacturing to China, free of charge? What the fuck did our fearless leaders think was going to happen when the Chinese grew some economic muscle ?  Forgive and forget ?

all true. it was an act of suicide (or treason?) to move manufacturing to china. but the lure of all those billion consumers to buy the products some day was too much. That and the money the politicians made. i remember reading that george bush senior was making a few million a year "consulting" in china. I remember thinking back then, how are they going to get their profits out of china? Never thought those big companies would get a penny from their investment repatriated.

japan got off at the end of world war 2 with a spank from the united states. the endless recriminations amongst western liberals about the united states' unnecessary bombing of japan are a joke.

sure they were unnecessary  of course they were. the end of world war 2 was the beginning of the cold war. it's not as if we nuked japan to punish them . why would the united states punish japan for having barely done anything to the u.s in world war 2.

yes, 100k americans died in the pacific, but that's not only not many soldiers, but almost no american lives were lost on american soil due to the japanese other than some in pearl harbor, which the historical shows was actually a bait trap by the u.s. to lure japan in playing itself up as an enemy requiring combat for propogandizing the u.s. public to support the war.

japan was nuked to show russia not fuck with the u.s. plain and simple. it was nuked a second time as a bluff . to show that it wasn't just a test.

meanwhile, the japanese should thank us for nuking them. short of nuclear pinpoint genocides which killed fewer people than the fire bombing of tokyo or dresden-------the u..s likely would have had to do far worse damage to mainland japan in order to demostrate post war dominance. if it had been up to the russians, let alone the chinese, japan would have been thoroughly looted and destroyed post war. if not for the u.s. nuclear umbrella and pacific fleet------korea and most of japan might be speaking chinese and russian today, just like they do in mongolia.

if you have read about world war 2 and post war era in the 40's and 50's inclusive of the korean conflict, and the near escalation of the taiwan conflict into an american nuclear bombing of china---------then you will realize not only am i correct in this assement. but that it very much remains a possibility in the future after the next set of wars. japan is VERY  vulnerable not only to its own demographic and self irradiation policies----policies which cannot be corrected as quickly as debasement----but japan is very much vulnerable to chinese and russian destruction. and thus---will continue to remain a vassal state ---a dog on a leash----held by the united states.

semper fi bitches!!!!
