Japan Plans To "Nationalize" 280 More "Ownership-Unknown" Islands

Tyler Durden's picture

15 months after acquiring three disputed islands in the Senkakus, and amid growing tensions with the Chinese following tit-for-tat air-defense zones, Abe's visit to the war-shrine, and public-opinion battles; Japan may have just cranked the rhetoric dial to 11. As Japan Times reports, the Japanese government will nationalize about 280 islands whose ownership is unknown out of the about 400 remote islands that serve as markers for determining Japan’s territorial waters.

Under the plan, announced Tuesday, the government will complete its search for the islands’ owners (which began in August) by June. This follows already tense warnings this evening from China that "Japan's moving in a dangerous direction."

It seems the Abe nationalism fears were not exaggerated.

Via Japan Times,

The government will nationalize about 280 islands whose ownership is unknown out of the about 400 remote islands that serve as markers for determining Japan’s territorial waters, the state minister for oceanic policy and territorial issues has announced.

Under the plan, announced Tuesday, the government will complete its search for the islands’ owners by June. Islands whose owners have not been tracked down by then will be registered on the national asset ledger.

The move aims to clarify the government’s intention to protect territories and territorial waters by designating remote islands as “important national territories,” and to reinforce the management of marine resources and national security.

The search for owners was started in August last year by the Headquarters for Ocean Policy, led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Registering [remote islands] as Japan’s national assets would send a message that we intend to strengthen management of them,” Ichita Yamamoto, the state minister for oceanic policy and territorial issues, said at a press conference. “The government must accurately grasp the state of these remote islands.”

About 500 islands serve as the base points for establishing Japan’s territorial waters and exclusive economic zone. However, information about some of the islands, including their owners, has yet to be confirmed.

This won't end well... especially with the Koreans now openly decrying the monetary policies of the Japanese also...

Firstly, disclaimer - I know next to nothing about the Chinese / Japanese region and its history.
But ...

How about, the islands are sovereign entities?  How about, if an island is empty then no-one owns it?  First one in stakes their claim.  How about, if you don't use it then you lose it?  You want an island?  Go live there.

Yes, I know, it's too simple.

Repeat disclaimer:  I know nothing.  But I am open to education.

Wonder how many of those 280 islands will become new shelters?

It just goes to show you how truly mad this world has gotten when a government and economy like Japan's is on the brink of absolute oblivion along with the U.S. and is ratcheting up the war rhetoric with it's biggest trading partner while telling the neighborhood "all is well" and that they have nothing to fear! As they dump trillions of becquerels into the Pacific Ocean?

After nearly 3 years of it getting worse what could go wrong?  After all they may need those islands to relocate 110 million inhabitants when the rest of it they are living on becomes uninhabitable.

Me thinks the gameplan is to break up China (Russia also if possible)  into several digestible pieces, dont be surprised to see Manchuria or Russian Far East in the future with sizeable Japanese cities.

Something will go down in the next few years, you can bet on it.  Russia would be the most desirable, phenomenal resources and small population in the Far East.  China would be broken up so it can't be competing for the Russian resources grab.  Russia broken up and all that Arctic and Siberian oil is for the taking.  Truly the Great Game is still on baby!!!!

I dont know about that, dont underestimate TPTB ability to generate spring and color revolutions.  Putin stuck his neck out too far with the Olympics.  The West let him have them, they are going to set him up for some real terrorist action, enough to embarass him in the eyes of the Russian people and destroy his good standing forever.   With Putin out of the way the western banking cartel and intelligence agencies can get back to the Yeltsin days and see Russia off with independence drives in several important regions.  No country is stable internally, look at independece drives within Spain and England, even in USA Texas and the South would still like to leave once in a while.  All those bullets bought by the DHS are to make sure people stay in line.

NOTHING SURVIVES THE FIRST POINT OF CONTACT. once everyone is locked into to their positions "they're locked and loaded too." wanna see 500 million boat people? that's what this thing means...and unlike Europe which parked all their monies in the USA for the duration of WWII...this allowing them to rebuild after the greatest global cataclysm in history...that won't happen if this thing goes hot. talk about an all out brawl. other than securing Pearl, Australia and the Panama Canal that's about it from the USA perspective. And yes "this will involve India and Thailand too." My guess is that the USA will set of very strong basing relationships with Indonesia to protect their vital interests in their country...but if this thing blows it will look like nothing other...and will almost certainly involve Moscow as a war aim. China has the most to gain by launching a first strike...if I were to hazard a guess it would be Burma "in an aggressive attempt to secure bases in the Indian Ocean "and spread their Navy out that way." They have never launched a campaign of naked aggression before (unlike Germany...a specialty of their's actually) ...the blowback would be stupendous of course...but as Stalin said "how many divisions have he?" the battle between India and China's Air Forces would be epic under this scenario...and those two Navies would meet in the South China Sea for a real showdown. this would be more than sufficient to get the draft boards underway as we have a significant presence in the Islands of Guam and Tokyo. The USA will base itself out of Western Australia with a force of "statistical significance." (millions.) We will not let either side lay a glove on Indonesia. "that's America's strategic asset in the region" and a very good friend I might add. The build up of forces between Russia, China and Japan could be "statistically significant" as well. Don't worry..."we're just sitting ducks" over there. Like the Marines on the Island of Midway who's last words were "come and get it bitch" I believe.

A different twist to the 1930s. China was acting like Japan of the 1930's. A new industrial nation and a young super power.

China is also looking for a reason to go to war. A great distraction.

We have yet to see how crazy this will get. Each moving closer to a breaking point.

I would like to understand exactly what is behind the Japanese death-wish.  The young don't want to have sex.  The old don't mind radioactive sushi.  The Abe government draws its bamboo practice swords to spar with Chinese steel.  Is it that the Japanese language is so different, that the people are afraid to emigrate, for fear of English or Spanish?  We could certainly use some Japanese farming families over here in Louisiana. Japan seems to be a doomed island, a sinking ship. Wouldn't it be prudent for educated families to escape to other, more spacious and less polluted climes?
