Preparing For Civil Disobedience? London Mayor Wants Water Cannons In London By The Summer
The US may be blanketed in freezing cold, but the UK is already preparing for what should be a hot, dry summer. Either that, or the request of London mayor Boris Johnson to distribute water cannon on the street of the capital may be an indication that at least some major municipal centers are preparing for a jump in civil disobedience and are looking for appropriate, "non-lethal" means to contain it.
SkyNews reports that "the London Mayor says the weapons will be used only in "the most extreme circumstances", however, there are fears the cannon could be deployed to break up small-scale legitimate protests. Mr Johnson says the water cannon are necessary in case there is a repeat of the summer riots of 2011."
So "just in case."
What happened in 2011? "The violent outbreaks and looting in cities across the country led David Cameron to warn that the machines could be used on the British mainland for the first time ever within 24 hours' notice."
The mayor has written a letter to the Home Secretary, Theresa May, who will be the one to make the decision on whether to licence the water cannon. For now the mayor's request has been turned down:
There are plans to buy three water cannon at a cost of £30,000 each from German manufacturers, but Mrs May has turned down a request to pay for a Met Police weapon as a national asset.
The Metropolitan Police also mulled using water cannon during the student riots in London in 2010, however, Mrs May then said in the House of Commons: "I don't think anyone wants to see water cannon being used on the streets of Britain."
In the summer 4,000 Metropolitan Police officers attended training camps in Hampshire in how to use the water cannon so they could support their Northern Ireland counterparts ahead of the G8.
While water cannon has been used on the isles before, most notably in Northern Ireland for crowd control for some time, they have never been used on the British mainland. In his letter the mayor told Mrs May he was consulting the public and key figures on the use of the water cannon and was "broadly convinced" by the idea. He said: "Should the engagement plan reveal serious, as yet unidentified, concerns I will, of course, take these into consideration and share them with you before you make any decision to licence this non-lethal tool."
The opposition, sufficiently vocal, seems mostly for popular theatrics:
"London Assembly member Jenny Jones said: "Would the Mayor have supported the deployment of water cannon against students protesting against their fees going up?"
What happens if the Commissioner wants to deploy water cannon but the Mayor doesn't? Londoners need to know when and in what circumstances the Mayor would agree with the Met using this weapon."
"Allowing water cannon on the streets of London is a step in the wrong direction towards arming our police like a military force, and it goes against our great tradition of an unarmed police service. People have a democratic right to protest and my fear is that once the Mayor allows these weapons onto our streets we will see them being used against people exercising their legal right to protest."
A spokeswoman for the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) said: "Since the riots in August 2011 the police and the independent Inspectorate of Constabulary have argued that water cannon should be available as one of a range of tools to respond to serious public disorder.
"This is supported by the vast majority of the public. MOPAC will now be undertaking a period of public engagement to get the views of Londoners, prior to any final decision to purchase water cannon."
The opposition has been duly noted. And now we await the final decision which will be made in February. We anticipate smooth sailing for the first of many water cannons to take to streets of London.

rule #1
never bring a water cannon to a gun fight.
True, but in the centre of London it will be more like a knife fight complemented by some glass bottles.
"Failing that request, we would also be open to a portable trebuchet. 10 of them, actually. And several hundred rotting animal corpses for ammo."
"Fechez La Vache!"
The target... is Us!

protesting in groups is the last way to accomplish social change. force the soveriegn to come to you.
lol
I think you are looking for the inter-scholastic debate tournament.
Historically, most rioters loot for food, firearms, liquor, or booty. Some are just opportunistic thugs looking for a little action, or to settle a score. Very, very, few are seeking social change.
If the mayor positioned the request as needed due to global warming, he'd have 10 cannons by now.
Water cannons paid for by the people they will be used against.
Nah, it's even more fucked up than that. The people paying for the water cannon will be slaving away at work to pay the salaries of the guys inside them, to use them against the people whose welfare they also pay for.
+1000
You up and peeked behind the curtain, didn't you!
And zee cannons are made by zee Germans (who are zee craziests peeepoles)!
The Maxim Gun has a proven track record against exactly this type of problem...

Indeed. I hate the British tradition of "glassing" someone you get into dispute with. This is mainly alcohol fueled at clubs and pubs, but it is a cruel way to settle a score. Breaking a bottle or glass and using it to attack a person's face. Even the girls do it to each other. So yes, knifes and broken bottles will be the weapons of choice.
As demonstrated by drunken Scotsman "Begbie" in the movie Trainspotting.

Recently, someone in the UK media was talking about cricket and they claimed the Aussies are all like Begbie with a tan.
http://www.aussiedailynews.com/sports/10593-aussies-compared-to-psychopa...
The only good thing about cricket is Piers Morgan stood in against a top English cricket bowler and the bowler cracked a few of Piers ribs or something.
Not because it's an affront to the English or Australians, but Brett Lee (the bowler in question) is Australian.
However, yes - Australian yobbos are essentially Begbie with a tan. The latest and greatest craze is taking steroids, getting drunk, and punching people in the head, either causing severe brain injury or death.
Moral: Choose your Pub and "Debating Partner" carefully. Failing that...
Do they allow Tasers and Pepper Spray in the UK? What about one of those telescopic beating sticks? Or are all of these "Verboten" in the UK, lest they be used on TPTB/LEAs?
Tasers, batons, pepper sprays, knives, face-coverings ... all Verboten.
Water and oil don't mix.
You see... here's how its done. You bring baloons filled with used motor oil, filled to the size of a softball.
So, at the protest, once the agent provocateurs turn it criminal, then you fall back a bit, and wait for the pig baton and sheild line, so you fall back some more, and wait for the water cannon. Then you counter-attack, hurling oil balloons. What fun! Talk about great You-tube videos!
The best way to bring down a fascist regime is to force them to behave like a fascist regime.
The best way to bring down a fascist regime is...
To stop obeying it.
As long as you obey, the regime will continue as it pleases. And why shouldn't it?

everyone think's I'm just a rebel without a cause. they think I'm cute and interesting with my behavior--that's only because I'm a handsome chap.

sheeple will continue to be fleeced. You can't train people to think differently when they've wholly committed to the system and are dependent upon it.
The people you're trying to save might as well be on a different planet. They don't, and can't see the world differently.

"Mark Duggan family reacts with fury to inquest verdict of lawful killing. Jury decides Duggan was lawfully killed despite concluding he was not holding gun when police shot him."
Considering this development I suspect it will be a long hot summer in London.
Quote from the ZH article above. "Mr Johnson says the water cannon are necessary in case there is a repeat of the summer riots of 2011."
The Mark Duggan killing was the cause of the summer riots of 2011. But he failed to mention that.
I don't think the British public are supportive of the Mark Duggan persona. I suspect the good people of London want these hammerheads held in check.
You just ' don't think ' knucklehead.
is that the tavistock bbc mind controlled robots like you fuck head.
remember when the cops said a terrorist jumped over a tube gate and fled from the police in stockwell.
guilty the fucker had a heavy set jacket on and was running away with heavy set jacket maybe a bomb remember and you said well if he had a heavy jacket on and was running for the police he deserved to be shot in the mouth 6 times.

London and New York, the capitals of western finance, the seats of power from which we the serfs obey, we kneel before them. Riots are not acceptable in the capital cities it inspires Resistance.
Should there be riots, they target of choice should be the City of London and down at Canary Warf, homes to the bankers. These bankers are really simply masters of fraud and theft. Of course THEY will tell you they make capitalism run. They are fucking liars.
Banker:
---> Banks are the blood that keeps the heart of industry pumping. Keep it borrowing and spending to make us rich.
Me:
---> Banks are the lubricant for the anal raping of the 7 billion. Keep the rod smooth because this shit be a lot more painful the hard way.
When the world is ready for the revolution let them hang from tree's. It is to soon, we are not ready.

Someone should let the riot dog know so he can start packing his bags and heading to London.

Would that be a wind cannon? Sort of a giant blow job, so to speak?
Wind cannon, so in other words all the politicans will be showing up?

huh?????
those things cost way more than £30k each,
and they are far from fckn non-lethal,
Things could get hot in London this very night after that Duggan verdict....
Riots, coming to a city near you once people wake up to what's been done to them by their government and corporations.
Never Klink. Riots reserved for inner city folk who do not riot over corporations.
Until they're not! Wait for a bail in or forcing people's 401k into treasuries, and they just might. Of course I could be too optimistic.
I think you just answered your own question. People with 401k's and victims of bail in's will complain, protest a little, but those folks will never riot. The one's who will riot have NO 401's and No real funds in bank. HINT _SA.
you know it. Only the gibsmedats participate in the shit-fling Olympics. Flying monkeys, everywhere!
Others, well, they stack. And plot. And watch and wait.
Rather: Riots, coming to a city near you, once police wakes up to the fact that with these toys, it's "use it or lose it". Any small nuisance can and will be classified as a riot. An bulk order of barbed wire & orange overalls already on the way.
Water cannons to clean the streets of London; especially around the CIty. Where the money smells of nothing but the irrepressible lightness of being; for the bonus brigade.
Yup. Those water cannons will be a useful tool as a "public bath" for all the London homeless once their housing bubble bursts (see ANY of Max Keiser's vide reports from the last 8 weeks.)
Just send the trouble makers on a nice vacation to a Pacific island. They can soak up the "rays". Problem solved!
Already tried that. Australia. Fail.

Water cannons!?
LMAO.
What's the matter, firearms not hip enough? Too "American"?
Fools.
Some Brits get it:

With your hands on your head, or on the trigger of your gun?"
If I could have one wish, it would be for all of us to adopt this mentality.

The banksters vs the masses. This should get interesting.
It's how Hitler rose to power.
So many dictatorial/tyrant vacancies coming.
The New World Order is going to suck.
Not so sure about that. I hear the bread is quite tasty and the circuses can be really fun to watch. They may even put them on utube.
Running out of gold sovereign coins will cause riots a lot sooner!
Weapons! LOL
Most of those filthy immigrants will benefit from a nice high-pressure laundering.
In the land of the free (shit) a 6 year old will be gunned down by a squad of trigger happy donut pussies for just pointing a squirt gun at them.
Under the surface in London and major UK cities simmers social discontent and racism. Now, nobody likes to admit this fact, it is kept under wraps by a major police state and a politically correct government on steroids.
Everyone remembers how fast the last set of London riots broke out. The house that I stay in when I am in greater London, out in Ealing, was close enough to major riots last time. In fact, the local High Street was the scene of looting and some burning. On an ordinary day, a walk from the house to the tube station or high street is a picture of London social peace. The Indian blokes who run the local shop are freindly and always seem to stock whatever the tourist needs. Last time, they were looted, but not burned. Why do that? Well, if I said who did it, where they came from and why, I would be considered a racist at worst, or unsensitive at best.
London over the last few decades has seen a mass influx of immigrants. You see the tower blocks all over the greater London area. Inside these grim places is where the poor natives and many immigrants live. When the riots broke out, many people spilled out of these tower blocks and made for the high streets where they looted and burned.
Social engineering by government is to blame. I am not afraid to say that. The social system is no longer British. If people say I am nuts by that statement, then perhaps they are not as old as me, and do not remember Britain decades ago, when social unrest was working people at odds with government and business over labor policy and unions. Or privatization of electricty, gas, water and the poll tax. These were mainly working people fighting to prevent neo-liberal economics. The difference today is, very few rioters are working people concerned for labor rights in the work place or a poll tax. Just watch youtube videos of the riots, you can judge the nature of these new rioters.
Sadly, open borders ordered by the EU, and Britain's failure to enforce immigration law, allows the flood to continue. And for my pro EU friend who likes to call me an idiot, I know your point of view, anyone supporting the EU in Brussels has a neo-liberal agenda. I don't intend to take the EU for anything but the fascist economic unit and the communist social unit that the Brussels Parliament and leaders represent. If you think I am wrong on Immigration into the UK, then I wonder if your eyes are ever open, or do you live down at Canary Warf somewhere, and never rub shoulders with anyone but the banker class? Just asking.
Sounds like you need to torch you some of those high rise rat's nests. Make yourself a halberd or at least a cudgel and take your island back.
Are you going to wait for Drake's drum to sound, or are you going to pick it up and start beating a call to arms on it?
JB you're a good man, there you go!
However, it's Cambo and his pals who welcome roms&bulgs for the slave labour. NAE MISTAKE.
"roms&bulgs" or "pols" for that matter are the least of Britain's worries.
That could NYC as well.
That's what you get for helping the communists win WW2. Enjoy it, Brits.
Last time I replied to one of your comments you weren't very impressed. I tried to be reasonable.
I guess that was a mistake.
I guess you've never read any history.
USSR won WW2 - US and the British were merely cameo appearances, by comparison.
Please keep away from the keyboard regarding subjects you know nothing about (there seem to be many).
Maybe you could take up spinning & knitting - your flock would be more than pleased to help, I'm sure.
Pretty accurate stuff Jack.
It's a long way from leafy Ealing but a trip along Wood Green main street on a Sunday tells it all. I used to visit the place in my 20s to buy hi-fi gear and most of the locals on the street were white. Nowadays, it's hard to spot a whitey in Wood Green. Mostly from Somalia and other such places. Ditto Tottenham. The BBC reckon there are over 200 languages spoken in London.
And I'm told that in some towns north of Birmingham, English is a foreign language. And Asian gangs are running white-girl prostitute rings.
Race - the most effective divide and conquer technique ever....
Closely followed by religion.
Wake the fuck up.
It's about psychopaths versus decent human beings. Unfortunately, psychopaths aren't a distinctive colour, which makes 'em hard to spot.
Do you see what happens Larry?
George Bush11 is a thinking womans'' Boris Johnson.
2ndly i know mucho londoners who piss harder on a friday night than water cannon.
May the lord have mercy on his soul.
Royalty will play... but only as long as the peasants are held at bay.
Bring on the gong show - water cannons - sure, why not.
Time to smash things up.
So what "extreme circumstances" is he seeing in the summer of 2014?
Devalued currency?
I didn't think 'commoners' could afford to either live in London or even to visit London...
And the goons will do the dirty work and wonder why low pay, no pay or why they are getting no where or nothing with their currency. Meanwhile, the money changers look down from above at their creation and slaves. Just like at the G20 few yrs ago in Pittsburgh.
Just what is the polite way of using a water cannon?
Ask pretty please first ,then discharge.
The rabble needs to get it's shit together....and buy (or build) their OWN water cannon, and deploy it at the outset of any planned protest.
We are going to need to start thinking like serious opponents, instead of hapless underdog victims.
In the tried and true fashion of escalation, may I propose that a small modification of the basic water canon would seem appropriate here.
May I introduce the sewage cannon. Sewage cannon beats water cannon every time
me likey
I love the smell of water cannons in the morning...smells like...Victory...

There was a category 2 chimpout in the courtroom after the verdict of lawful killing was announced with abuse being hurled at jurors.
That was only the Inquest on Mr Duggan.
Because of the verdict, there will likely never be a criminal investigation.
Our policies are causing widespread poverty! Quickly, we need to buy tanks so the poor people don't fight back!
It's time to crack out my '300' dvd and brush up on ancient military skills and tactics for the 2014, "Bread And Circuses Games."

Add to that Fire and Ice documentary about the Winter War for a more up to date guide.
Thanks for the tip. ;)

If Boris's brains were dynamite he wouldn't be able to blow his hat off.
In London tomorrow 10 fire stations will close.
Today the courts in London delivered a verdict on a police killing that has the potential to be a 'Rodney King' event for London.
Let 'em have a water cannon, won't stop anything when the next big one happens.
With a bit of luck Johnson will get to have a face-to-face with the Londonders he loves so much to discuss their low IQs and how much they've benefitted from the influx of foreign capital inflating the London housing bubble whilst London burns. He'll finally get the accolade of Roman Emperor that he so wanted, Nero, fiddling whilst London burns.
Those streets need to be sparkling clean for Boris and the billionaires. How can he lick their spittle and kiss their boots with all that riffraff wandering around
Can someone please provide the London "delousing" schedule for summer 2014 for me?
London already has water cannons. They are stored under a railway arch. I remember reading and seeing pictures. They are wheeled out for maintenance once in a while, that is why people know about them.
This is bullshit, like the recent "30 year rule releases". Thatcher was said to have considered calling in the Army to police the miners strike. I know for a fact, from two different sources, that the army were dressed in police uniforms and policed the strikes. One from a mother who saw and challenged her Lieutenant son who she saw on TV in a police uniform, confirmed by another friend a Met. Police officer who was there for many weeks.
How about some names?
That would make a great story, if you can provide some validation.
I remember Orgreave Colliery.
Never trusted BBC since.
Video editing to frame the 'acceptable story' was unbelievable, given a friend of mine worked as an independent videographer at the time - I saw raw footage. It bore hardly any resemblance to what was on TV.
A friend almost had her head knocked off by a mounted policeman, just for standing and taking pictures and recording audio.
Thatcher was a fucking criminal.
The thing about water cannons is that they aren't restricted to using water. What do you want to bet that there are some 'alternative' loads for those machines. And while we're at it, why spend money on water cannons at all. Just contract with a few septic system pumpers to stand by with full loads - problem solved.
Come on guys. Why all this continious negativity. Since I started following this great blog (keep up the good work focusing on all things wrong with the rather corrupt powers out there), the markets have risen so so much. So much wealth has been created. Have the readers of ZH been enjoying the party? I doubt it.
You see: All across the world people still generate value. Unemployment has been high, but approz 75-95 of the workforce has actually been working through these very troubled times we had. Far away from full employment, but given the shock the world faced and the swift response of Central Bankers this outcome in my humble opinion is actually not so bad.
I was recently travelling through several Southern European countries and a few Eastern European ones. Not everything is well, it is obvious.. But, it is slowly getting better. Some areas simply looks thriving. This, at least by my own comparisons. People are in the shopping centres again. Actually spending! People go to cafees, restaurants and the cinema. Families flock to entertainment centres. Four years ago you hardly saw a shopping bag for days, and people were much tighter with the entertainment budget.
Jobwise things are looking brighter slowly. We are very much in transition, but hey... We move forward.
Yes, it is still a long road to go when seen from where we were in terms of welfare as well: BUT that welfare road never was sustainable in the first place (even if the idea is noble and very respectable). It simply just costs too much. No matter how much we wish 2+2 could become 5, sorry ain't happening.
Live Your Life on the bright side of life :) Enjoy your existance. Do not sit and wait for the next crash, hoping it will happen (now just because you need to prove yourself right (and probably having lost money in the process)).
Peace Out.
Actually very little wealth has been created in the last 5 or 6 years, but a huge amount has been stolen with the active connivance of government. And because of the way governments calculate "GDP", that theft actually is fraudulently counted as wealth creation.
The whole structure of government throughout most of the west has become anti-wealth creation, punishing those who actually create while rewarding those who steal and bludge. And since the mechanisms through which this is done become stronger every year, wealth creation is on a continuous downward spiral, obscured by the looting of the declining assets of those who saved for their old age.
I see your point, it is valid. However, my bank accounts beg to differ. At the end of the day that is what decides. Stockmarkets around the world have rallied. If it is liquidity driven or fundamentally sound I don't care so much. I just want my bankroll to grow.
I am not a macro trader. I do not have the connections, nor the money, brains or dicipline to play on the big stage. Neither are people who read this blog (or 99.99%). I am simply a small fish opportunist.
Sitting in the corner crying that no value is really created while the stock market goes UP UP UP doesn't really seem very bright. Instead one should be enjoying the ride to the top, get out of Dodge. Re-invest all the new found profit into the market after the next crash when dispair is at a max. Then reap a massive reward. That is bright in my opinion.
