"Don't Flush Your Toilets" Mayor Says As Ohio Water Supply Freezes; Niagara Falls Frozen

Tyler Durden's picture

The nation may be slowly thawing from its deep freeze "polar vortex", but that is no comfort for tens of thousands of Ohians, whose water supply has literally frozen in the past day after the valves at the Avon Lake Municipal Utility plant were planted in ice, dramatically lowering the supply of water. NBC reports that "tens of thousands of customers in several counties in Ohio are facing a dramatic water shortage after the intake valves at a key plant that draws water from Lake Erie apparently froze amid the wild winter weather." As a result, the mayor of Avon had a modest proposal as a response to the caticestrophy: don't flush your toilets. At least there is toilet paper, which is more than Venezuela, and its 480% returning in 2013 stock market can say.

From NBC:

Officials at Avon Lake Municipal Utilities west of Cleveland said Wednesday that the valves at the plant are caked in ice. Although they are still able to draw water, the rate is below typical demands — which means several surrounding cities could be hit by a veritable drought.

In a message on the city of Avon's official website, officials called on residents to hold off on doing anything that uses a lot of water.

Avon Mayor Bryan Jensen sent out an emergency messages to locals asking them to hold off on laundry, baths and showers, according to Cleveland.com.

"We even ask people to refrain from flushing toilets as often as they used to until this can be resolved," Jensen said.

The plant website said it provides water to over 200,000 people living in a 680-square-mile area made up of seven counties — including Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, Erie, Huron, Ashland and Wayne.

And in other polar vortex news, the Niagara Falls has frozen.

Each and every one of us is to blame for this. Climate scientists have warned us about this eventuality for over a decade, but none of us listened. The Copenhagen climate bill failed to pass, our government still hasn't passed a universal tax on carbon emissions, and the UN still hasn't tackled the rising problem of overpopulation in any meaningful way. Green startups still struggle to get financing from the selfish and profit-crazy VCs in Silicon Valley. Electric cars are still left out with recharging stations only available in a few sparse locations.

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO WAKE UP AND SAVE OUR PLANET? WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO GET US TO MAKE THE NECESSARY SACRIFICES?

Take a look at the rot in places that have had low birth rates for enough decades.

It's an unmistakeable trend that the more a society "progresses" the less children they have.  Japan, most of Europe, America, many others all have shrinking indegenous populations.  Still a good deal to have 7 kids if you're an African farmer, not so much a suburbanite. Us "civilized" folks might just think ourselves right out of existence.

I never wanted to have kids anyway.  And even if I did, I would be most upset if I couldn't teach them how to live.  I'm not doing much of a job looking after myself.  How in hell could I look after a whole family?   The great, most excellent thing about not having kids is that you can't blame them for your failures.  Have you got kids?  Have you failed?  Remember that, it's not the kid's fault.  You were doomed to fail anyway.  Have fun teaching them how to succeed.  If you know how.

Provide a concrete numerical example of what you claim. Go ahead, show a example of where the data was fudged...

If it was fudged, then any competent study would reveal it. Given that you could fund such a study for a fraction of the money currently spent on the PR FUD campaign, why don't they do it? Such a person would be handsomely rewarded by FF interests. Given a climate scientist makes maybe $65,000 to $100,000 a year, a 7 figure payoff would look pretty good...  Why doesn't that happen?

That is true, but then again during those time, flora was allowed to flourish and wasn't being razed in large quantities like now.  So no, it’s not a natural cycle when you're effecting the balancing of the equation by human hands.

Again, this whole Global Warming debate is pretty funny and is reminiscent of the Ozone Hole debate.  Good thing economics won out over science until it was too late.  Hopefully we can ignore all problems until we actually make the Earth inhospitable for humans.  Economics comes first you know, fuck sustainability and the future, we want to pretend we are well off instead.  Oh and the most important temperatures to pay attention to, are those in Siberia, cause if that permafrost melts, the methane will accelerate the warming of the planet exponentially.

Oh yes the methan story

Very interesting the subject of methan

With the population on the planet going hokey stick...............that means the animal population has to go hokey stick to feed us

there is 2 animals at any one time to feed us

Rice is grown in fields that produce................methan

So no meat and no rice...............for anyone

I agree that over population is going to affect us in ways that we do not even know yet...............but global warming is just a farce!

Mother nature can put shit loads of co2 into the atmosphere just by blowing a valcano.

in fact when a valcano erupts it can put more co2 into the atmospher than the whole of the US does in one year

Thu, 01/09/2014 - 10:52 | 4315147 firstdivision
firstdivision's picture

I can tell you my views on the population situation is not...well humanitarian.  I am a firm believer that the globe is over-populated.

While we talk about one volcano trumping US output, how about global human output in a year?  Yes the volcano can put more CO2 into the air, but at the same time it releases particles that balance the CO2 by blocking heat from the sun from entering.  I watched a documentary on a phenomena called Global Dimming, which one could argue that Global Warming is a result of the environmental agencies cracking down on air pollution, which was an offset to the CO2 released.

Quit making shit up about volcanos....

Volcanos are about 1% of human emissions...

http://www.agu.org/pubs/pdf/2011EO240001.pdf

On average, humanity’s ceaseless emissions release an amount of CO2 comparable to the 0.01 gigaton of the 1980 Mount St. Helens paroxysm every 2.5 hours and the 0.05 gigaton of the 1991 Mount Pinatubo paroxysm every 12.5 hours. Every 2.7 days, they emit an amount comparable to the 0.26 gigaton preferred estimate for annual global volcanic CO2 emissions.

Those record highs that came from weather stations situated on asphalt next to airport runways, encroaching suburban areas etc. When you talk about hot summers it's "the climate". If I talk about extremely cold winters it's "the weather".

Here is a site where you pick as few as 60 *rural* stations world wide and reprodue the temperature record very accuately.

http://moyhu.blogspot.com/2014/01/just-60-global-stations-area-weighting.html

There is a very cool interactive globe showing the stations...

Twice before I've written about using just 60 met stations to estimate the Earth's global temperature anomaly. The first time I simply chose 61 stations according to "quality" criteria (rural, 90 years records). The resulting average was quite close to HADCRUt land only and the GISS met stations index. This was somewhat surprising, because the stations were in effect not area-weighted, but sin(latitude) weighted.

Making shit up ain't going to cut it buddy...

How to combine multiple measurements?  Why, just splice the data directly together, if it gives you the result you want.  If it doesnt, conjure up a mechanism to get the math to tell you what you want it to say.  Works pretty much the same for climate alarmism or CB actuary.  Apparently you havent seen it because you havent looked.  The GISS datasets are rife with manipulated garbage where the data lacks...why is GISS almost always warmer, aside from it having Hansen's fingerprints on it?  I digress.

Filter your station to ones in rural areas, which pulls out the large cities "asphalt effect".  But then again I wouldn't expect someone that doesn't do their own research to actually process data.  Also, I work in an industry that is very sensitive to weather, and dependent on accurate weather forecasts (and I have to help with the modeling), so I have firsthand work with weather datasets.

When you talk about hot summers it's "bbq weather", yet when you talk about cold winters it's "ZOMG IT'S AN ICE AGE".

Ozone.................is for real

It is measured in dobson units............named after the Brit that discoverd it.

But I have an interesting story ref NASA and ozone.

Another brit was saying there is a hole in the ozone and NASA was saying no there is not!

They where monitering it and other stuff from the satellites.

A guy at NASA who knew the brit knew the brit knew his stuff and why was NASA not seeing the hole!

Then it came to him...........GIGO!

Garbage In........Garbage Out

NASA had set an upper and lower limit on the computers.

They took the limits out and said Feck..............there is a hole and the rest is history

Another way of looking at is, that if 300 ppmv of C02 is capable of inducing a GH effect including water vapor feedbacks of roughly 35 degrees C, what do you think 600 ppmv of C02 would do?

For 550 of the past 600 million years the planet has been a full 60F warmer than it is today.

Same goes for CO2 levels, the have only been below 500ppm for the past 25 million years.

The natural equilibrial climate of our planet is actually quite hostile to human beings or any warm blooded animal for that matter.

Extrapolating 30 years of warming in a 600,000,000 year data set is the stuff criminal deception. Is Bernake printing sunshine?

And pretending that humans have the ability to lock the planets climate into some kind of quasi-homeostasis just because we want to keep it in the state that suits us best is utter dino-enraging bullshit.

Funny how all the proposed solutions involve getting poor people to work harder and give money to rich people.
We need to save oil?  Why do streets have cul de sacs?  Why do we ship resources back and forth around the world instead of processing what we need in the country of origin?  Why do we have huge buildings in one small area and a huge commute to get to those buildings?  Why are we on rations in times of peace and during a so-called "boom"? (and what will happen to those rations when the "boom" (I use that word VERY loosely ) "finishes"? Why do we pay people to have babies?  Why do we look down on surfie dudes on the dole?  By minimizing their carbon footprint, aren't they doing the world a favour?  Why do we allow empty houses to deteriorate and then be demolished while others are homeless?  What is the carbon footprint on that one?

... and nobody could possibly have predicted this cold snap and associated water shortage because, because, ummm ... because, ummm - how on earth were we to know it might get cold and that some people might need water?

But the good news is that we have somebody to tell you how to ration water and toilet use.

When you guys pay taxes (or is it the water bill? ), do you get a discount for all the money they save by not building any infrastructure - dams, pipelines, "Niagara Falls Heaters" (Yes, I know that is an energy inefficient and very stupid idea, don't bother pointing it out - replace it with the words "other technology" ), not investigating new water sources...?  Did you suddenly get a tax break when they stopped hiring weather forecasters, engineers, planners and other people who generally know a thing or two about providing water to cities?  The guy that is paid to say, "Use less water.  Don't flush your dunny":  Does he actually have any qualifications or was he put there by his rich mummy and daddy in order to keep him out of trouble?  If he does have qualifications, why isn't he given access to adequate resources in order to solve problems?  Is this one of those capitalism problems where all the companys are so competitive that they are too poor and don't have any money left for infrastructure or R&D?  Is all the capital / R&D budget being spent on paying bank interest instead?

Yeah, it's the same over here too.
