Sochi: What "The Safest Games Ever" Cost?
Russia is spending $51 billion on the Sochi Games; far exceeding the lavish-at-the-time $40 billion spent on China's 2008 Summer Olympics - which, as BusinessWeek notes, had more than three time the events. However, it is Sochi Organizing Committee President Dmitry Chernyshenko's promise that it will be "the safest games ever" that is really starting to add up in the face of suicide bombings and explosive device discoveries. As Al Jazeera shows, securing Sochi is costing twice the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and involves double the security forces of the London Olympics...

At the time, Bandar claimed to be speaking not only for the Saudi monarchy, but also for its chief ally, the United States.

There is a very real chance that Putin is bringing in every Spetsnaz and several divisions of regular army. When computing 'costs', you might calculate those salaries used for security, but they tend to be salaries that would have to be paid anyway. You might also add in costs for new buses that will keep car bombs away from Olympic sites, but those buses will be used elsewhere when finished. Toss in bomb detectors and metal detectors, which will be used again. Cameras and drones and spying equipment - 'nuff said. So really, other than channeling a few billion to cronies, it is hard to say what the real cost of Sochi is.
And, of course, there is a very real chance that we are getting 'real' numbers from Putin, versus the seasonally adjusted BLS-like costs from the governments that hosted prior games.
Can we start calling them The Terror Games already? Catching terrorists is becoming a sport in itself.

I would almost like to see the "terrorists" pull off an attack at the games, but with minimal casualties.
