Sochi: What "The Safest Games Ever" Cost?

Tyler Durden's picture

Russia is spending $51 billion on the Sochi Games; far exceeding the lavish-at-the-time $40 billion spent on China's 2008 Summer Olympics - which, as BusinessWeek notes, had more than three time the events. However, it is Sochi Organizing Committee President Dmitry Chernyshenko's promise that it will be "the safest games ever" that is really starting to add up in the face of suicide bombings and explosive device discoveries. As Al Jazeera shows, securing Sochi is costing twice the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and involves double the security forces of the London Olympics...

Bloomberg sums it up...

Cost per event...

Securing Sochi...

Not to mention, the Winter Olympic Games should omit the word 'Olympic' in the title.

.

The only true Olympic Games is the Summer Olympics...this 'winter olympics' business is just more a cash grab for the rich(er) nations.

Incidentally, last summer for the Track & Field World Championships in Moscow, I had a bad feeling about it and did not go.

You can thank Prince Bandar and the United States for the high cost of the Sochi games.  Is it a payback for averting Obama's rush to war with Syria on lies about Sarin or is it payback for granting asylum to Snowden or both?

The bombings have called renewed attention to the discussion held last July between Putin and Prince Bandar bin Sultan, the intelligence chief of the US-backed monarchy in Saudi Arabia, which has served as the main base of support for the Islamist insurgents in Syria.

According to a transcript of the discussion leaked to the media, Bandar demanded that the Russian government terminate all support for the Assad regime in Syria. In return, he offered a joint energy strategy to prop up oil prices and other inducements.

Most critically, the Saudi prince told Putin he could ensure that no terrorist attacks would disrupt the Sochi Olympics.

“I can give you a guarantee to protect the Winter Olympics in the city of Sochi on the Black Sea next year,” said Bandar. “The Chechen groups that threaten the security of the games are controlled by us.”

At the time, Bandar claimed to be speaking not only for the Saudi monarchy, but also for its chief ally, the United States.

so... we now have a precedent set in terrorism-- for the freedom to compete for the hearts and minds of the world! indeed,... freedom of religous expression?

'Only the fuck'd up Trinity of Christian's, Jew's, and Muslim's interpret Satan's Grand Plan's of societal immolation without shedding a light'd thought... of eternity's future-- twas only 'Manmade'? Is Satan the Real Deal? Or is he all but a subliminal consciousness of man's eternal rejection of mortality! Or, do we collectively destroy the planet for a better afterlife in gathering nothingness? All together now?!?'

simply amazing how the entire world can be held hostage by a handful (?) of jihadist renegades waving Black flags, having more credibility than a viral worldwide outbreak of the Black Death Flag of the Bubonic Plague...

Such a pathetic existence called intellectual man, were it only for a Darwinian evolution, turning the clock back, existing only to be-- and nothing more,... a happy cave dweller whence we came-- the simplicity of ignorance coexisting only with survival itself?

There is a very real chance that Putin is bringing in every Spetsnaz and several divisions of regular army. When computing 'costs', you might calculate those salaries used for security, but they tend to be salaries that would have to be paid anyway. You might also add in costs for new buses that will keep car bombs away from Olympic sites, but those buses will be used elsewhere when finished. Toss in bomb detectors and metal detectors, which will be used again. Cameras and drones and spying equipment - 'nuff said. So really, other than channeling a few billion to cronies, it is hard to say what the real cost of Sochi is.

And, of course, there is a very real chance that we are getting 'real' numbers from Putin, versus the seasonally adjusted BLS-like costs from the governments that hosted prior games.

If anything happens during the games I pity those Government(s) you just mentioned should they try for another round...  watching the "K" in kinetic action the Russians will deliver to whomever decides to kill innocent men, women and children to seal a vendetta for not giving Saudi Arabia it's pipeline and the western banks control of the money in Syria.

I would almost like to see the "terrorists" pull off an attack at the games, but with minimal casualties. Not because i want to see people participating and spectating at the games get hurt, Not to embarrass Russia, but to see Russia bomb the living crap out of Saudi Arabia and their cohorts in response.

"Cohorts" - that would be Israel (Busy patching up and sending al-queda fighters back to Syria, as reported by Sky News of all people) and the CIA (Busy training al queda in Jordan as reported by The Guardian).

Russia would have to bomb Langley,  Tel Aviv, and Riyadh simultaneously. Not advocating it, just pointing out the obvious.  I suspect Vlad has already made plans for their destruction in a  much more subtle way since Bandar made his threats clear last year, along with the Netanyahu/Obama-Kerry media bullshit blitzkrieg to start WWIII in Syria. Priceless to see Kerry called a liar publicly before attending meetings with those who called it last year.

Somewhere there's an Aqua Velva wearing a-hole who is still fighting the cold war. I'm thinking he has enough money left over to finance these and other bombings. Too bad once we "won" the cold war they completely gave up trying to make western society the envy of the worlds eye. Old Stinky just gave up on anything to spruce up the old joint. He sits farting, cigar in hand, while ALL  THE JOBS GO AWAY! He's so entirely stuck in his ways he can't do anything but repeat and repeat what he thought were the glory days. He is retarded. He is broken. He is useless. He still has a black budget.
