The Sheer Idiocy Of The Markets In One Chart... Is Back

Tyler Durden's picture

When Google bought Nest (for its smart, intrusive thermostat technology that gives the NSA a front-row seat into the heating requirements of Americans), little did it know that it was purchasing an OTC penny stock with the ticker NEST and a market cap of a few hundred thousand. Or maybe, Google knew very well what it paid $3 billion for, and it was the increasingly prevalent idiots that make up the stock market that were confused. Either way, just like TWTRQ was TWTR for a few short days, so NEST (not to be confused with the GOOG acquisition target if even that is precisely what happened) is now the second coming of the unmitigated idiocy that defines the "market"

Meet Nestor (ticker symbol NEST) - a small company from Rhode Island that makes traffic systems - different to Nest - the thermostat-maker that Google just bought for $3.2 billion. NEST was up 4900% at its peak yesterday on massive volume.

One just has to laugh and yes, Jordan Belfort would be proud.

Did you see the latest where they are implanting (or having the manufacturers implant) an additional radio network card so they can monitor "disconnected" computers?  They don't need to be everywhere to gather data, the data goes to them.

Yes I did.  I agree that the intelligence and spy agencies are out of control and way outside their bounds.  But what I'm talking about is when people start making things up to the point where nobody can release anything on the internet without supposedly being involved with the NSA.

Fonestar... what really happens are NSA algorhythms watching servers until the servers flag something of interest.

Just for argument sake, NSA plants sensors in Nest thermostat and can monitor/grab Fonestar data. Gain access to your wireless network from inside and capture your bitcoin keystrokes.

Would be nice if you could buy something without it being bugged. To say it's paranoia is naive.

There's just as many counterforensic measures as there are active and passive collection techniques.  It's not something that would scare me out of my substantial investment in Bitcoin.

Where do I download my software suite of counterforensic measures?

Where can I buy hardware that has counterforensic measures already built in?

Do the vendors accept BTC, are they free, or must I use my Chase Visa with best-in-class security features?

Does the software come with the auto-update option defaulted to yes?

What about the option to send usage data to help improve future versions?  Should I allow...or no?

You stated you don't care whether he ever does or not, but do you know why he may not?

If not (and you may truly not know and/or have any logical theories as to why "Satoshi" may "never come out of hiding"), that's cool.

There's just a critical difference in what I'm asking and in what you're responding with.

For years, Linux desktop users had it easy.  Their Windows brothers and sisters had to deal with an unending stream of malware; but other than a handful of exploits aimed mostly at Linux servers, there were no real Linux Trojans or viruses. Oh well, all good things must come to an end.

http://www.zdnet.com/linux-desktop-trojan-hand-of-thief-steals-in-700001...

Hand of thief still has no reliable means of entering into a Linux system. The only way that the hand of thief developers recommend is trying to send an email to the victim trying to convinces them to click on a link that will download the malware. As you all know, this does not work very well anymore. It’s still not like Windows and BSD malware where they could just pass through an open port using a worm.

Also, Linux is being targeted because it is getting more popular.

So fonestar -Why is that the Federal Government had a mandate actual deadline for IPv6 in early 2007 and never implemented it?

Too many other IP security and name service protocol standards through the IETF since 1999 that are out there but haven't been used by the likes of AT&T/NSA, Verizon/NSA among others...

Wouldn't this help bolster Bitcoins use if those service standards were finally put in place or perhaps a roundtable of European and Asian concerns that are already way ahead of North America in using them to develop the next generation level of IP and name service security in those protocol(s)?...

If you want to build confidence in using networks and computer systems that have been exploiting the hell out of our privacy you should be looking for a plan to build that level of trust which means making those providers of those services responsible, reliable and accountable -No?

In talking about TPM, Trusted Platform Module, the concerns include the abuse of remote validation of software, where the manufacturer and not the user who owns the computer system, decides what software is allowed to run and possible ways to follow actions taken by the user being recorded in a database, in a manner that is completely undetectable to the user.

Yes, beyond disabling TPM in the BIOS I highly recommend physically removing the chip from your motherboard.  This can be done fairly easily by anyone with a steady hand and a schematic diagram.  Just remember, if you already have a windoze install it will no longer boot.

TPM chips are nothing more than an smartcart in a chip, soldered on your motherboard (some are removable, in a slot). It does nothing more or less than any smartcard does.

Now, to say that Windows is more secure when you have TPM is naive. Windows is designed in such a way as to permit execution of any code signed by "special keys". Microsoft claims they are only their own, but folks have found references to NSAKEY in Windows code and ... it was already reported hackers had access to Windows code signing keys ..... so, take all this claims with a grain of salt!
Windows executes such code without any warning or indication. It's "code from the vendor", trusted...

Now, some "speculation":
This alone means that at least Microsoft has the ability to execute any code on your computer. You should already know, that Microsoft is an US corporation, that always follows orders from the US Government. If NSA asks Microsoft to run some software on your computer, they will. And because when NSA asks such things, they provide gag orders, Microsoft will not be able to tell you.
So make your own opinion out of this. Can NSA run code on your computer, or not.

end of "speculation".

The TPM chips have some other "nice" feature. One of the especially "nice" feature of TPM chips is that unlike any sane HSM, they can export keys to another TPM module. Nice eh?
Also, the TPM module contains an signature fingerprint, which is unique. By virtue of being soldered on your motherboard, it makes for an very handy unique identifier for your computer. Any software on your computer (hint: Windows) that has access to the TPM chip, can transmit this identifier where it chooses... to Microsoft, to let them know what software you have installed (licenses, etc trivialities), or to any web site that asks... kindly enough.
Further, the TPM chip is a very nice feature that software vendors (including Microsoft) appreciate: it can be used to license specific software to specific computer only. Even make it so that the software can't run on any other computer, even if you copy it, because it lacks the required signature etc..

There is more, of course....

How's it going man. I see the barking seal trolls are out in force, red-arrowing their little hearts out. Funny how it doesn't make a difference, you know? We've got some big things brewing in Bitcoin land, and I guess they'll come kicking and screaming eventually.

Not that it matters to my bottom line, sitting pretty well with Bitstamp at 848 - looking for some more basing action before it breaks out of the channel we've been in for the past seven days or so.

Overstock was a great help, not really giving a shit about the Wells Fargo news though - they're just trying to get regs passed to stifle competition, no doubt. Part of the "study your enemy" phase.

Anyway, don't mind the fools. One of the pre-requisites of changing someone's mind is assuming they have critical thinking skills and the logic to work through counter-arguments. In this case, I'd say that assumption would be deeply flawed.

The big lie...The FED or congress cares about unemployment". The FED has backed itself into a corner and only cares about keeping interest rates low since a jump in rates will cost US Govt. billions, maybe trillions over a few years. So the BS about caring about job creation is pure BS. QE is a zero sum game. Initially it gave the economy a boost by jump starting housing. Now the ZIRP means less income for savers while SPX goes parabolic.

Reducing their balance sheet implies they will be selling toxic MBS back into the market at inflated prices or Treasury debt whose interest payments used to be paid back to the Treasury by the Fed.  Just the poison we don't need.  The can only reduce its balance sheet with writeoffs or lies.  It can only grow as they allow the fraud to continue.

Just imagine it all turned off - all wireless access, ATMs, checkout counters, credit cards, gas pumps, EBT ...  This is how they will condition the masses; three days no noncash access.  National guard at every pump and Safeway front doors.  Wake up to it Monday morning, too late to do a damn thing.

That is all it would take and the very great majority of Amerikans would very quickly form a line for Govt. cheese out the back of a deuce-and-a-half in the Safeway parkiing lot.

You could come up with any excuse that would fly and the most would accept it; just get the machines turned back on.

Google would have been better off buying the Rhode Island traffic light company.  NEST's technology has a short shelf life.  Someone else will come up with a better high tech thermostat in short order.  And how many times do you buy a thermostat?

Google won't be as lucky with this NEST acquisition as Exxon was when it unloaded its Reliance Electric Unit in 1986, seven years after it bought Reliance.  Exxon lost money on the deal, but not that much.  And Exxon bought Reliance mostly for its PR value, to show everyone Exxon was interested in energy efficiency.  Exxon could afford the purchase, it made tens of billions in excess profits overcharging American consumers in the late 1970s, daisychaining the price of oil shipments.  As well as cheating the governnment out of royalties on unreported oil wells on government land.  Remember then President Carter wearing a sweater as he made a televised national address about conserving energy?

Google is joined at the hip with the NSA, so this purchase could be a way of helping out the NSA, by showing that privacy is a costly privilege that doesn't exist in the 21st century.

Until, of course, Snowden releases his crown jewels, where he shows how NSA tracking information was provided to hit squads.

Exxon Will Sell Reliance Electric Unit for $1.35 Billion and Pull Out of Field December 12, 1986|Associated Press

NEW YORK — Exxon Corp. said Thursday that it is getting out of the electrical equipment business by selling its Reliance Electric Co. and other companies managed by Reliance for $1.35 billion.

Analysts hailed the move, long expected as the likely end to what had been seen as an embarrassing, mistaken venture by the world's largest oil company.

It came just one day after Exxon said it will join Rockefeller Group in selling Exxon's 54-story midtown headquarters to the Japanese conglomerate Mitsui & Co. for $610 million. Exxon said that deal would give it a one-time gain of about $246 million in its fourth-quarter earnings.

Together, the two sales represent the latest steps in a continuing retrenchment by Exxon in the face of new economic realities brought by the yearlong oil price collapse.

Earlier, Exxon cited that reason in announcing a major restructuring of its worldwide oil and gas operations, a 26% cut in capital and exploration spending and a plan to cut 6,370 workers from its staff of 146,000.

In Thursday's statement, Exxon said it would sell Reliance and the other businesses to a group of investors composed of Reliance management, Citicorp Capital Investors and Prudential-Bache Securities.

The deal should be concluded by the end of the month, Exxon said, adding that it expected to generate an after-tax gain of more than $275 million from the sale.

Company spokesman Bill Smith said it was not clear if all the gain would be recorded in the fourth quarter.

Exxon bought Reliance, a Cleveland-based manufacturer of motors and other electrical communications and weighing equipment, for $1.236 billion in 1979.

The company was hoping to profit from technological developments contained in an energy-saving device for electric motors, for which it held commercial rights. But the technology eventually proved to be commercially unfeasible.

Called 'A Great Move'

"This has been viewed as their largest discrete acquisition which clearly was unsuccessful, and to their credit, they're owning up to it and going to write it off," said Sanford Margoshes, an analyst who watches oil companies for the Shearson Lehman Bros. securities firm. "Good for them."

Bruce Lazier, an analyst at Prescott, Ball & Turben, called the Reliance sale "a great move."

"They lost a little pride, because it didn't make them look like great technical geniuses, to invest all that money into a gizmo that didn't work after two years of research," he said. "But at least the value of Reliance improved enough over the years that they got back their principal."

In announcing the sale, Exxon took pains to note that the Reliance acquisition did not lose money.

"Taking into account Exxon's original purchase cost, movements of cash, and property between Exxon and the Reliance Electric group in the intervening years, and the proceeds of the sale, Exxon's investment . . . over the period 1979 through 1986 will have provided a substantial positive net cash flow to Exxon," the statement said.

Includes Other Firms

The Reliance Electric group of companies was expanded to include other Exxon activities in 1985, the largest of which was Gilbarco Inc., which makes pumps, measuring devices and service station dispensing equipment.

"Idiocy" is a word that is not appropriate.

Its Cause and Effect. Oligarchy wants to protect its gains by any/all means.

Its gone to the extent of making the asset/commodity/ money Markets its Harem Bitches; all doused in spicy, derivative perfume.

We are now in OLIGOPOLISTIC markets that belong to the money aristocrats. Harem Sultans.

Change your language accordingly.

The Market is now a hooker who performs for the RICH.

As Libertarians you have not realised that this is the logical conclusion to Pax Americana's march to an APEX society. Means and Ends; you're in the wrong paradigm.

As perceived from their Olympus you or I don't count. And the market is now just a mechanism to raise TRIBUTE to the rich from the poor; the exact contrary to the redistribution of taxes in a welfare state construct.  We will rue the day we lost honest representative government that shared out the wealth of nations to within the constraints of self supporting economies.

In their old Welfare state world, money like water flowed downhill espousing gravity.

Our bitchy oligarchy market is now PUMPING money up to the APEX, against gravity; more and more.

One day gravity will have the final word like in Zorba the Greek!

Never forget Greece's legacy even if you be an Internet geek.

In times of Awesome social regression, its good to remember those who made the world go the OTHER way.
