Continuing Claims Surge Most In Over 5 Years To 6-Month Highs.
Initial claims beat expectations very modestly (326k vs 328k expected) and hover at their average level of the last 6 months. Non-seasonally-adjusted saw initial claims surge to 438k. It would appear the trend of improving claims has ended for now. What is perhaps more worrying is the continuing claims surged by their most in over 5 years - at 3.03 million, this is the highest in 6 months (and the biggest miss in 6 months. It is worth noting that this is before the emergency benefits for 1.3 million Americans disappear (which will likely begin to show up next week or the week after).
This is the worst weekly shift in continuing claims since November 2008...

This "recovery" is killing me, long live the recovery!
This is a renaissance in the manufacture of idle moments.
Not seasonally adjusted is 534,000 not 438,000.
Not seasonally adjusted rises to 534,000. 4 week NSA moving average rises to 472,000.

EBT cards no good at all best buys....now that's govt in action
I guess I should always do the opposite of what I don't do or what I do unless I do what everybody thinks I should do what I do.
TIC is even better
Is there a trend here? It seems to me the only real trend is the continuing denial of facts and complete dedication to hopium. Who out there gives a fuck what "the numbers" are saying? The stock market sure doesn't. The bankers could care less. And our government justifies its very existence by perpetuating the fraud in order to "save" us. The more the whole system hammers us to our knees, the closer we get to exactly where they want us. We are completely dependent upon corruption to sustain our very existence, so what the fuck does "sustainable" actually mean?
You pretty much nailed it. Welcome to the twenty first century.
The question I always ask is why now? That is a big one with the sudden turn on pot smoking. We are in the middle of the biggest liberty grab by government in many years, so why are we all of the sudden free to get stoned? Everything I see is about dependency and I see nothing that enhances our freedoms and independency about being stoned. Its like we find ourselves in prison and they announce we have new freedoms, handing us a rope. Are we really this stupid that we will sell our freedom for the opportunity to gamble in their "markets" and get high? Why now?
" Are we really this stupid that we will sell our freedom for the opportunity to gamble in their "markets" and get high? Why now?"
The average Zero Hedge poster is not "this stupid." The average person outside of Zero Hedge is. They are doing it now. because they can get away with it.
I use "we" very liberally here, but I mean the collective actions and directions of the society in which we live. "We" are dragging "us" to the precipice.
Why now? I suggest you do some research into what the energy available for consumption by humanity looks like and has looked like over the last 100 years or so.
Do your own research, talk to the petroleum engineers, the chemical engineers, the mechanical engineers and nuclear engineers etc.
here's the bottom line, in order to actually do anything or create anything of real value, you need to consume energy (burn calories). Ignore growth for a second. Simply maintaining a high standard of living, you still need to consume a certain amount of energy, if the energy that is available for consumption goes down, so will your standard of living, period.
Add to this numerous biological cycles that consume energy (mostly sunlight) and are catalyze by a relative few organisms (not humans) anf that are necessary for life on this planet (at least human life). As it stands now, there are 7+ billion people (and growing) all competing for a better quality of life.
Now do some research, draw your own conclusions, think about how humans have tended to behave throughout history and hedge accordingly.
It would seem that being one step ahead of the herd makes you a genious, but two steps or more and you are a "crackpot".
As my dad often said, he was a day late and a dollar short. I have continued in his tradition. Even if I have the ability to understand the entirity of the complex clusterfuck were are in, my lack of willingness or ability to act, makes such potential knowledge pretty useless beyond running about screaming "the sky is falling".
Hey, if you really are running, at least you are getting some exercise.
As a people, Amerikans are pretty stupid. 40% of US are directly dependent upon the USG (I'm talking direct leaching from their fellow citizens industriousness) for everything. This 40% want MOAR and will do anything to keep the tit flowing. Another 40% work directly for the beast. Gub'ment workers of all stripes who keep the tyrannical beast's heart beating and growing. 20% are today buying beans, bullets and bandaids. This group knows what is coming and is scared for their family (These gals and guys are also reading Zero Hedge).
This will not end well.

Now you're getting it. Humanity isn't just another ponzi, it's the ponzi.
hedge accordingly.
There is no sustainability. In fact, the goal of the Federal Reserve Act has always been to act as a slow killing parasite, that probably at one time deluded itself and the rest of us into thinking it could be sustainable, but like any parasite it will eventually either kill it's host, in which case it will effectively kill itself, or it will be eradicated by the host, likely with much suffering.
Remember to whip with tens before ones after the crash. Hamilton was the biggest advocate for the bankers during his time and advocated a central bank like the Fed.
It is corruption that behaves as cancer. Corruption exists to subvert the rules for its benefit and because of that ultimately self destructs. Lots live large in the mean time however. I don't know what the vision was for those setting up the Fed but I would guess most of it was to benefit themselves and not necessarily future generations. They planted a seed of cancer that will grow until it consumes its host, as all cancers do. Our system has so metastasized cancer throughout, that there is no saving the host. There is no cure. The stock market will continue upward sucking all productive capital out of the economy. There will be no crash as the players have no reason. They have sucked in about all of the muppets they can and its not enough. They have to just keep ramping upwards. The only thing that will bring it down is when there are virtually no person able to suck enough off the tit of this succubus to survive, and finally revolt. But that will not happen until there is no amount of money that can buy the necessities of life, when all production fails. It could take years given no one is willing to acknowledge the reality and I believe will deny it until their stomach screams out in pain.
It'll be interesting to watch the disability roles over the extension phase-out.
buy everything, everybody skate, all skate, oh wait, I am showing my age with the all skate thing. You can't possibley put any more makeup on this pig. When the plug gets pulled on this one that giant sucking sound the country heard with NAFTA will sound like a shhhhssshhhh in the library. There aren't enough exits my friend when this plug gets pulled. Wonder who shorted Best Buy before this report??? Just thinking out loud. I know, thinking, imagine that for a minute. Never mind. Nothing to see here. When black swan season opens this time that indeed will be a shot heard round the world.
Vast Stretches Of Impoverished Appalachia Look Like They Have Been Through A War

After the unemployment insurance runs out, get a "crazy check."
Meanwhile in the real world:
Arthur Cutten: JPM Holds the Whip Hand on the Comex - Gold Buy Signal
Arthur Cutten has issued his Buy Signal on Gold. He has a very conservative approach and his article speaks for itself.http://sufiy.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/arthur-cutten-jpm-holds-whip-hand-on...
"I do not know who owns the registered gold, since title can be transferred fairly easily. But it remains fairly clear that JPM was in the driver's seat in stopping most of the deliveries, and now likely holds the 'whip hand' on the Comex in terms of gold."
Allow me to clarify this for you. When fraud is the status quo, possession is the law.
Perpetual underclass. Bring on the riots, baby.
Maybe they will become trained as a perpetual raping class, like India...
JC Penny must be overflowing with customers .......their closing stores must be too busy to handel the crowds
These numbers are just more tangible evidence of green shoots in this wildly succesful recovery. We have been told by the President that for every dollar spent on unemplyment payments, it generates $1.50. We are in great shape based on that.....right?
Buy long bonds?
Watch for that weekly morning star to confirm at tomorrow's close, the daily bull flag (maybe get a break away up gap next week?), the bottom of the nearby futures gap down from December is good support from yesterday's lows and a close above 130.23 leaves it filled. Jawwaggers are loudly claiming to sell bonds, sell gold, and buy stocks. ...hmmm.
Another interesting trend is in Australia and Canada. Big exporters are seeing their unemployment rates rise quickly. This is a big blinking light that globally, things are slowing dramatically. This has much more to play out in the future.
Demographics taking hold....
Many baby-boomers downsizing and cutting back with less income.
10,000 per day, bottom line. The banksters stuff the young with school loans and lower paychecks.
repeat.
Oldwood,
Why now for legalizing weed in Colorado and coming soon to a state near you? Docile sheep won't resist. I am wondering lately why now with allowing Concealed Carry in Illinois? It is the last state that it was illegal. Do the PTB know an armed citizenry can help police the streets when it really hits the fan? It is 150 dollars for license fee for five years and I have yet to find out how much the necessary CCW class fees will be on top of that. Society compared to just 20 years ago is virtually unrecognizable. Compared to 40 years ago it is. We haven't seen anything yet but what we will see in the next ten years, well, only time will tell.
The oligarchs will make the slaughter painless for the drugged up sheep.
Correct, don't forget about the tax revenues either.
Well. I was a stoner in my twenties (1970's) and knew no one that inspired me to do anything except go into dealing.
I have a CHL but do not carry, partially because it is a hassle, but also the classes let you know you are now a target. The "rules" are different for those who carry. If you have a weapon you must surrender your right to speech if it offends anyone. I was told to even fart in someone's space would be considered assault, if I were carrying a weapon. Ultimately I think CHL is another means to qualify and identify those who would most likely be a threat to a central power. Think about it. How many leftist organizations are pushing for public ownership of weapons, much less carrying them. As a legal weapons carrier, if my concealed weapon should become visible to anyone, I can be brought up on charges before a grand jury. If I expose it unknowingly does not matter and If I leave the "scene of the crime" of exposure it makes it worse. Trust me, CHL is no blessing. It is becoming simply another means of control, and do not think for a moment that the police want any of our help, ever. They are but another self sustaining bureaucracy.
With Best Buy and JC Penny expect more empty storefronts.
Plenty already.
